An independent review of theFreeWheel All Terrain WheelchairAdd-On by Barry Brooks, who brokehis neck, C6/7, and became paralysedthree weeks before his seventeenthbirthday. He went on to specialise inwriting TV commercials, havingworked on some of the world’s topbrands and eventually running hisown agency in the heart of London.

He also found time to travelwidely and win a couple of Olympicswimming medals! He now sits ongovernment tribunals and still findstime to write.

“ ”They say there’s nothing new under the sun. But wouldyou settle for something that was a little bit new? A littlebit better? I would if that little bit new and better wasthe FreeWheel, available from Gerald Simonds.

It’s a third wheel for that old wheelchair ofyours, a third wheel that even a novice para can get alittle more whiz from, and the sort of freedom to pushand enjoy that an old para could only dream of. Untiltoday that is, because the FreeWheel, according to DougRobinson, MD of Gerald Simonds,‘is one of the bestadvances in wheelchair independence in years.’

What’s truly remarkable, in the over-pricedwheelchair world of ‘how could anything dare to cost somuch!’ is how, at £395, (or £375 including delivery ifyou buy online at www.gs-direct.co.uk).

The FreeWheel is an American invention. It’s asimple wheel that clips on to the front of a rigid framechair’s foot plates (sorry only rigid frame chairs – at themoment). The wheel is about a foot in diameter andraises your plates off the ground leaving you with astable, go-anywhere (well nearly) chair. You can cutacross grass, go through snow, cross over sand and takeon terrain that previously would have left you stranded, and generally become free as a Californian beach bum.

The FreeWheel is to our world of wheelchairswhat the 4-wheel drive is to the world of cars. Nowhereis off limits. It just opens up the options. Attach it andyour chair truly becomes a land rover, just like itscapitalised car counterpart. And all with a wheel less.

Technically it’s Germanic in itsprecision and Honda-like in its absolutefitness to do the job it was designed for. It’ssimple to clip on and, once on, stays thatway, come rough ground or even rougherhandling. Then, when it’s time to revertback to the orthodox you, it practically zipsoff, it’s so easy and immediate.

To see the FreeWheel in actionand showing all its amazing virtues, simplycheck into the Gerald Simonds website atwww.gerald-simonds.co.uk. There you’ll finda short video that will put you fully in thepicture.

He would say that, wouldn’t he!Gerald Simonds Mobility Specialist, Nesad Causevic(right), tries out the FreeWheel All TerrainWheelchair Add-On.

Nesad, a wheelchair user himself, said: ‘Overthe years I’ve tried out lots of different wheelchairattachments, but I have to say that the FreeWheel isfantastic. It’s the best thing I’ve tried. It really does freeyou up and lets you go almost anywhere’.
