Installation

Note: The installation will require that you have correct network permissions, allowing files to be written and or modified on a Network Share at the server via a mapped Network Drive from a client workstation.

Pre Install Check List

1. Has a Network Share been created or available for the install?

2. Are the Permissions on the share are set to Full Control for the account of the software installer?

3. Are the Permissions on the share are set to allow read-write-modify for users?

4. Has a mapped drive been created to access the server share on all client systems?

Note: Macintosh systems do not use a mapped drive but rather a mounted volume. The steps are the same for Macintosh except instead of looking for a mapped drive it would be the mounted volume.

Server Installation Instructions

The server installer will create a folder named Harcourt on to the mapped network drive. All server install files will reside within this Harcourt folder.

For the following steps we will use H:\ as the example mapped network drive. Your mapped drive will likely differ but the steps should be the same.

1. If the program did not Auto-run upon inserting the disc in the drive, navigate through the My Computer icon to access the CD or through the CD icon on the desktop (Mac) and double-click the Setup application

2. Press Install on the Server Installer splash screen to proceed.

3. The About screen should appear with details about this program. Click the Next button to continue.

4. Please read the license agreement and if you agree click the Next button, if not please click the Cancel button to exit the setup application.

5. The Server Location will now be highlighted allowing you to browse to the location to install the software. This location should be your mapped network drive. As mentioned before our example is H:\.

6. Click the Browse button and navigate to mapped drive H:\, and click the OK button. Note: If you have a hybrid environment consisting of both PC and Macintosh clients you will also need to manually enter the path for the opposite workstation. For example if you are installing from a PC workstation then you would need to type the path the Macintosh clients would use to access the program. In the example we used the mapped drive H:\ as our Windows path, the Mac path "in this example" would need to be typed in as- OSX-Server: Applications. Where OSX-Server is the server name and Applications is the shared volume that would be mounted on the client workstation.

7. When the path set in the location field, click the Next button.

8. You will now need to choose your State from the drop down list, followed by typing your school's name. Press Next to continue.

9. You should now see a final configuration summary detailing and outlining the setup paths as well as your State and School name. If any of this information is incorrect press the Back button to correct it. If all information is correct, press the Confirm button. The installer will now copy the required files to your server.

Page 12: Splash into Phonics › cms › lib3 › LA01001731...This is a software product in which students and teachers can access installed Splash into Phonics program using one username

Once the files have completed the copy process you will be prompted with a message stating the installation is complete.

Client Installation Instructions

1. Navigate or browse to the mapped network drive that was used to install the program to the server. In our example above we used H:\, or the mounted volume Application if running from a Macintosh system.

2. In the mapped drive or mounted volume you should find a folder named Harcourt. Double-click the Harcourt folder.

3. Locate the product installed. This product will be named Reading. Double-click the Reading folder.

a) Double-click the folder LAN Windows Client Install folder for Windows workstations.

b) Double-click the folder LAN Mac Client Install folder for Macintosh workstations.

4. Double-Click the Setup application to begin the client install.

5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the Client Setup.

Note: If installed from a PC workstation to a server that is also accessed from Macintosh clients you will need to first double-click the LANMac Client Install.sit file to extract the Macintosh client files referenced in the above step 4. If your Macintosh does not include Stuffit Expander the application can be downloaded from: www.stuffit.com/mac/expander

2. Five tasks appear in the End of Year Maintenance options window. The four tasks that are located under the database drop-drop menu includes: Backup, Restore, Archive, and Optimize. The one task that is located under the Students drop-down menu is Promote. You may also use the Database and Promote Student buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Figure 8: Maintenance Options

3. Select the task that you would like to perform and follow the directions on the screen.

The Backup option, located under the Database drop-down menu, allows you to backup all data in the system. This will create a folder specified by you and will copy all the grade and user databases here.

Page 25: Splash into Phonics › cms › lib3 › LA01001731...This is a software product in which students and teachers can access installed Splash into Phonics program using one username

Select the Restore option to replace the student information using a backup or archive. On selecting this option you will be prompted to navigate to the folder where the backup or archive is stored and to select this folder. The system will then copy the backup or archive replacing the one currently in the system.

Select the Archive option to backup all data in the system and open a new, clean database. This is the same as Backup with the addition that the databases are cleaned to allow new data to be entered.

Select the Optimize option periodically to reduce the size of the grade and users databases and enable them run at peak efficiency. This is necessary because when records are deleted from the system, the size of the databases doesn’t always change. Using the Optimize Databases functionality compacts the databases and reflects their true sizes.

The Promote option archives all data and provides a database in which each student is automatically moved into the next higher grade.

More About Using the Promote Option

The Promote option, under the Student drop-down menu, transfers student records from their current grade level to their next grade level. This option is typically used at the end or start of a school year. Promoted students must be assigned to a teacher and set up into a class by a System Administrator with the following steps:

1. When you are logged-in as system administrator, select the main menu Go To menu item, and select the EOY Maintenance sub-menu item. Then, click the Student \ Promote menu items.

2. A warning message appears, reminding you to make sure that no one is using the system before you continue. Click the Yes button if you are certain that no one is working on the system.

Server Path

For the LAN Version, this option enables client machines to link to the content and databases installed on the server. If the content or the databases are moved to another server after installation, the System Administrator will need to log into each client machine and reset this path to the new location.

Warning!

Changes to the database or content paths should only be performed by a System Administrator.

You must click the Save buttons each time you make a change in a database or content path.

Note: This button is functional only on Network installations.

Teacher Options

Logging in as a teacher enables you to set up student accounts and manage your students’ learning. From the Teacher Home screen, (Figure 11), you can manage classes, make assignments, and view reports.

Your name, the current date, and the school name appear on the Teacher home screen, as does the grade level with which you are currently working. This allows you to verify that you are logged in properly.

Warning! Work assigned to students already logged in to the program will not display until the student has logged off or exited the program.

If you teach more than one grade level, select the grade you want to work on from the main menu Select Grade menu item.

Manage Classes

Students can use the Splash into Phonics program by logging in as a Guest. However before you can track students’ results as they complete assignments, they must have an account, or profile, and a learning assignment. The Manage Classes Screen, (Figure 12), allows you to complete the first step: setting up student profiles and assigning students to a group and class. You can also import and export student data and print a student list from this screen.

From the Teacher Home screen main menu, select the Go To > Manage Classes menu items, or click on the Manage Classes button. Also, make sure that you select the correct grade that you would like to work in before completing a task.

Use the Save & Add button to save time. It saves the student information that was just entered and automatically opens a new profile.

Tips for Adding Student Data

Student usernames must be unique.

No more than 25 characters can be used for student usernames, passwords, and IDs.

Avoid using spaces, accents, or hyphens in the username and password field.

Assign passwords according to students’ ability to memorize them.

Print a class list in case student passwords are forgotten. Be sure to store the list in a secure location.

Adding Student Profiles by Importing a Student List

Tip: The student list to be imported must be in a comma separated value (*.csv) format. An easy way to create the proper file structure is to enter one student’s information manually into the management system and export the data. You can then use a spreadsheet or database program to enter the rest of the student profiles and import the data.
