The department of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology will host students from abroad for a

Course title Fluency Disorders

Course objectives At the end of this course, the student

has insight in the phenomenology and assessment of stuttering and

cluttering

has insight in the treatment of children and adults who stutter,

with particular focus on clinical reasoning with regard to

treatment goals and engaging the client system

is able to determine treatment goals and select general behavior

modification procedures and specific fluency-related techniques

for a given case of a person who stutters

is able to formulate treatment goals SMART for fluency treatment

is able to translate procedures and techniques into concrete

treatment activities (introductory)

Course Content Two topics will be addressed: stuttering (main part) and cluttering (introduction).

A limited list of selected course materials (articles, book chapters, DVDs, etc.) will

be provided on the Toledo-platform for self-study. An assignment (1 ECTS) will be

devoted to the results of this self-study activity. The fluency courses consist of four theoretical and four practical course sessions (in

total 2 ECTS), addressing the following topics:

The stages of the clinical process of fluency intervention, mirroring the

empirical cycle; i.e. collection of assessment data, analyzing the data and

setting up hypotheses (i.e. diagnosis), selecting goals and modification

procedures and techniques in an elaborate fluency treatment plan.

Treatment planning: formulating goals according to SMART principles (i.e.

specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed); sequencing goals and

subgoals; setting up treatment; concretizing modification procedures.

How to involve parents of children who stutter actively in their child’s fluency

treatment: individual counseling of parents, engaging them to actively join

therapy activities, and setting up a parent group course.

Introduction in phenomenology, assessment and intervention (briefly) of

cluttering.

Written exam (August/September) (in case of a fail on the oral

exam)

Prerequisites In order to have a fair chance of following this course successfully the student must

have mastered basic knowledge of phenomenology and assessment of fluency and

fluency disorders (i.e. stuttering). Therefore prior to attending this course basic

knowledge of the following topics should be acquired:

Phenomenology of fluency and disfluency: characteristics and development

of normal (dis)fluency

Onset, incidence, prevalence and core features of stuttering (i.e. stuttering-

like disfluencies and associated reactive behaviors)

Etiology of stuttering (genetics, triggers, persisting factors) and danger signs

for persistence versus features of transient stuttering

Assessment of overt aspects of stuttering (i.e. assessment of stuttering

severity: assessing stuttering-like disfluencies, frequency, duration,

associated behaviors); assessment of covert aspects of stuttering (attitudes,

feelings, etc.)

Course objectives At the end of this course, the student

Has insight in the phenomenology, assessment and intervention of several specific voice disorders (e.g. puberophonia, conversion disorders, laryngectomy,…) and the professional voice

Can determine the main goal and subgoals of voice therapy for a given case, and to choose and apply adequate voice therapy strategies and techniques.

Course Content This course will provide students with specialized information about voice and voice disorders. Besides more specific voice disorders such as laryngectomy, conversion disorders, transgender voice etc. are discussed. In the practical sessions students will get in touch with some traditional and more recent therapy methods. The singing voice is also covered.

Assessment The students will be evaluated

With an oral exam (exam period January)

With a written exam (exam period August/September)

Prerequisites In order to be able to follow this course the student must have mastered basic knowledge of phenomenology, assessment and therapy of voice and voice disorders: 1. Anatomy and physiology of the vocal instrument (larynx structures, laryngeal muscles and innervation,..) 2. Etiology and phenomenology of voice disorders (organic and functional) 3. Assessment tools: perceptual evaluation, objective voice measurements, self-evaluation tools) 4. Basic principles of voice therapy (vocal hygiene, vocal re-education)

Develop awareness materials for specific target groups

Understand different cultures and how to deal with them as an SLT

Course Content Classes:

Several topics on interculturality will be discussed. Lecturers always make a link to SLT, e.g.

- language awareness

- public service interpreting

- intercultural communication

- culture and emotions

- transmigration and multilingualism

- health care in an intercultural perspective

Intercultural project:

Students design a multilingual story reading session in a library in Antwerp. They participate

by reading a story in their own mother tongue. A Dutch reader will support them.

Assessment The students will be evaluated by continuous assessment without exam during the

examination period: through participating in an intercultural project (70%) (process, written

reports, presentations). Students also write a paper on one of the guest lectures (30%).
