DEFINITE ARTICLES IN SPANISHAll nouns in Spanish have a gender. This does not mean that the item is actually “male” or “female” (the table is not a “girl”, but it is “feminine”). Gender in a language is simply part of the grammar of the language.

A definite article is the equivalent of “the” in English (instead of “a” or “an”). An example of a noun with a definite article is “el libro” (the book) or “la mesa” (the table).
