Dear Readers,Welcome to the November issue and our NEW name!

We felt it was time to change the name of The Downton Directory to something which more accurately reflects the distribution area we cover.

As all the villages we deliver to are in the SP5 postcode, we decided to use this in the title and by doing so, also tie it in with it’s sister publication The SP4 Magazine.

To add to this, some readers will be receiving the magazine for the first time this month as we have expanded yet again! 4 new villages have been added to the distribution, Winterslow, Farley, Pitton and Firsdown. We hope you enjoy your first edition and if you or any “seasoned” readers wish to contribute an article or event, especially for a charity, we would love to hear from you.

Remember, remember the 5th of November... have fun but PLEASE be safe around fireworks. Until next month!

Terry West started Harlequin Bathrooms in 1986 in premises on Churchfield Trading Estate, west of Salisbury. After 2 years the company needed more showroom space and moved to its present premises in the Bourne Centre, Southampton Road (near the Tesco Superstore) where there is plenty of parking.

The showroom is constantly being refurbished to echo developing trends and to show new ranges. A visit to the showroom will show you how to use contemporary or traditionally designed products for practicality and maximum effect. From their first visit clients are treated personally by the knowledgeable staff who will guide them through the choices available for their desired project.

Harlequin Bathrooms can design and arrange installation of cloakrooms, complete bathrooms or shower rooms and offer a huge selection of baths, showers, taps, basins, WCs, bathroom

accessories, tiles, specialist lighting, ceilings and flooring.

Because Harlequin Bathrooms is a local family run business and not a branch of a National company they have a good rapport with the people in and around Salisbury and, indeed from further afield. In fact many clients return for bathrooms when they move to a different house having remembered the comprehensive and personalised service that the company provides. Over the years the team has developed a good working

relationship with Architects and Developers of prestige homes in the area and with Interior Designers who appreciate the care with which the staff treat both Designers and their clients. The company has also supplied fittings and accessories to shipyards for use in luxury private yachts and cruise ships (and in the past the QE2).

Terry and his team pride themselves on seeing the job through to the end be it for a Cloakroom or all the Bathrooms for a new build or the refurbishment of a whole house. All their approved installers are trained in the particular ranges they are required to fit, and are neat, tidy and professional in their dealings with the clients. If clients have their own fitters or plumbers the company is only too pleased to supply all that is needed to complete the project.

Nearly two thirds of wildlife spotters have seen kingfishers along their local river, according to a new survey.

The online river wildlife survey was carried out by the Our Rivers campaign – a partnership between the RSPB, the WWF, the Angling Trust and the Salmon and Trout Association - with the help of hundreds of amateur nature enthusiasts.

The results show 60 per cent of respondents reported sightings of kingfishers, despite the species suffering sharp declines in two recent harsh winters.

The most popular wildlife sightings on our rivers are mallard ducks – which were recorded by 80 per cent of respondents – followed by herons (74 per cent), damselflies (65 per cent) and swans (64 per cent).

Otters have been seen by 20 per cent of river wildlife watchers, but the same number of respondents also reported seeing American mink, a non-native species which is threatening riverbank ecosystems.

One of the species most threatened by mink, the watervole, was spotted by 17 per cent of people.

RSPB head of water policy Rob Cunningham, speaking on behalf of the Our Rivers campaign, said: “It has been fantastic to see the hundreds of responses to our online survey and hear about species people have recorded on their local rivers.

“This paints a fascinating picture of our native freshwater wildlife, from watervoles and otters to salmon and herons. And it also shows that there is an army of wildlife lovers out there who are passionate about their local rivers and the amazing species they support.

“There is so much to see from a riverbank – and one of the most spectacular sights is the blue flash of a kingfisher diving from a branch into the water below. Kingfishers are one of the species most vulnerable when temperatures plunge and with two harsh winters back to back we know their numbers took a hit.

But our survey tallies with other reports showing that kingfishers are bouncing back.”

The survey also asked people about environmental threats to rivers. More than two thirds (67 per cent) of people said they were concerned about water pollution from agricultural chemicals, while half of respondents said over abstraction and litter were causes for concern.

Angling Trust chief executive Mark Lloyd added: “Our rivers are improving, but three quarters are still failing European targets for water quality and in many waterways wildlife is under threat from a range of pressures.

Nearly 1,500 Our Rivers supporters have written to Environment Minister Richard Benyon calling on him to take tougher action in the Water White Paper. Members of the public can still get involved by visiting www.ourrivers.org.uk/letter and sending their own letter.

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Downton, less than 7 miles south of Salisbury, is a Public House that’s well worth paying a visit.

Think of rural pubs the way they used to be; family run, open fires, high back pews, a garden that nestles in Countryside.

Offering traditional pub-grub and gastro food that’s predominantly locally sourced and always freshly prepared.

With real Ales served with real care. And wines from around the world that are picked to both drink alone and to compliment the seasonal menu’s and Chef’s special dishes.

The White Horse in Downton is all of the above. And more.

Adjoining this charming Public House is The Stables; one of the

prettiest private rooms in Wiltshire.

Historic surroundings supported by modern facilities – WIFI and HDTV which can be hooked up to your laptop for presentations.

An Occasion to Remember

The Stables is the ideal venue to host all

manner of occasions, from weddings and parties

to conferences, training sessions and business meetings.

With a dedicated Event Manager at your disposal, your ‘Do’,

whatever it may be, will be planned and tailored to suit your specific needs.

Recent events include a Wedding for 100 people, a Business Conference for 40 delegates and a Skittles Party for 20....

The Stables is also a great venue for Christening and Engagement parties – and Children’s Birthday parties are a big hit too.

The best way to find out whether this really is the ideal venue for you is to call Morna Roe to arrange a tour (no obligation) and enjoy a free glass of wine whilst you chat through your needs. Now what could sound better than that?

Identifying abuse

Abuse of the elderly has been called a ‘hidden and often ignored problem in society’ and is a problem that affects half a million elderly. It can be defined as a single or repeated action against an elderly person which causes them harm or distress and is often carried out by someone the elderly person has some sort of connection with, such as a relative or carer.

However, it can be difficult to identify abuse. In part, this may be because it is hard to face the fact that a relative or carer can treat an elderly person in such a way, but also because the person being abused may feel too embarrassed or ashamed to speak out, even when asked.

The elderly can suffer abuse in different ways:

• Physicalabuse-suchasmanhandling or hitting

• Psychologicalabuse-makingthem feel worthless or afraid

• Financialabuse–stealing,orpressurising to withdraw funds

• Sexualabuse–thereare

thousands of reported cases each year

• Neglect–theyarenotcaredfor in an acceptable way

Abuse can happen anywhere. According to one report, around 67% of abuse happens in the elderly person’s own home, 12% in nursing homes and 10% in residential care. It also occurs in other places, such as hospitals or a carer’s home.

Why abuse occurs

The abuser is usually well known to the person and may be a relative, care worker, social or health worker, neighbour, friend or someone they are caring for themselves. The strain of caring for an elder person, especially on a long-term basis, can lead people to act in ways that they shouldn’t, leading to a one-off attack, occasional or systematic attacks and deliberate acts of harm. These may be triggered by the break-down of the relationship or the carer’s inability to provide the level of care needed. In nursing homes or residential care, abuse can occur when staff are inadequately trained or supervised and have little management

support or guidance.

What to do

Abuse stays hidden because people are afraid to speak out. But abuse has a profound effect on the quality of life. If you feel someone is suffering in some way, try to talk to them alone – it may take a few attempts to find out if there is a problem. Physical abuse may be more easily identifiable than psychological abuse or neglect, but trust your instincts.

Being Aware

If the person you know is not acting in their usual way, seems fearful or has signs of physical abuse, gently enquire about how they are being treated. If the matter needs to be taken further, depending on the circumstances, talk to other relatives, the line manager or staff. Explain your concerns and that action needs to be taken. Never feel embarrassed about highlighting abuse. The earlier abuse is spotted, the less long-term harm can be carried out – always trust your instincts if you feel someone is not being treated in the way they should be..

Wallace & Gromit Stir Up The Nation For

“Great British Tea Party”Wallace & Gromit are calling on people across the UK to join The Great British Tea Party from the 1st -10th December to raise thousands of pounds for sick children in hospitals and hospices by enjoying a cuppa tea and a slice of cake.

People from all walks of life are being invited to put the kettle on and get baking to take part in ‘Wallace & Gromit’s Great British Tea Party’ 1st- 10th December. In the UK we get through a staggering 16.5 million cups of tea a day, that’s an average of three cups each, proving the Great British Tea Party is the perfect way to get together with friends, family and colleagues

for a traditional teatime celebration that raises money for charity!

Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit and trustee of the Children’s Foundation, says: “A quintessentially British tea party is just my cup of tea and a great way to help sick and terminally ill children in the UK.” Since 2003 over 400,000 people have taken part in the Great British Tea party, helping children in over 25 children’s hospitals and hospices across the UK including Salisbury District Hospital.

The Fundraising event hopes to raise over £150,000 and is

kindly supported by Yorkshire Tea. James Prentice, marketing manager at Yorkshire Tea, told us “When Wallace & Gromit first met Yorkshire Tea it was love at first sight. We have sponsored the Great British Tea party for 4 years and enjoyed every second! It’s great to be able to help raise funds for sick children all over the UK with Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation. We have lots of new and exciting plans this year and look forward to everyone joining in the party! “

Joining in the event couldn’t be easier - simply call 0845 600 1924 or visit www.wallaceandgromitteaparty.org.uk to sign up today.

Rett UK Christmas Fair to bring Festive Cheer in Winterbourne Stoke

Local craft and gift suppliers are to come together on Saturday 5 November to give festive shoppers the opportunity to choose from a fabulous range of fashion, jewellery and other crafts. The event, which supports the charity Rett UK, will be held at The Manor Barn, Winterbourne Stoke between 11am and 4pm.

Providing inspiration and hundreds of new, clever and affordable gift ideas the fair will showcase the wares of 18 traders from all over the Salisbury area and is sure to provide plenty of festive inspiration for local shoppers.

Among those confirmed are KiwiKate’s possum, merino, and sheepskin products, Mia & Ollipop Handmade at Home, All About Melie, plus Phoenix Trading, Forest Edge Jewellery, Forever Living, Little Lords & Ladies Children’s Clothing, Truly Madly Baby & Kid, and Salisbury Scents.

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to snuggle up by the fire with local author Mandy Baggot’s latest chicklit novel. With ample free parking a hog roast, tea and cakes and demonstrations from Splat Cooking, the fair offers something for everyone.

Funds raised from the event will go towards families living with Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. The Rett UK team provides a valuable life-line for families across the UK

ensuring that they have access to best practice in diagnosis, treatment and care.

“Rett UK receive no government or lottery funding and rely entirely on donations and grants,” says local Mum Helen Murray, whose daughter Evie pictured above (9 yrs) suffers from Rett Syndrome. “Fundraising events such as this exciting festive fair are therefore extremely important in providing essential support to keep the charity running.”

This warming curry is perfect for a chilly Autumn evening. It’s a fairly mild dish, but if you prefer something a little hotter, add a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the minced onion mixture.

Serves 4Ready in 1 hour and 20 minutes

MethodPlace the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender and whizz for a few seconds until finely minced.

Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the minced onion mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute.

Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks and add to the frying pan. Cook over a medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in the red lentils and stock or water. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally

for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils are tender.

Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried onions.

TIPTo make the relish, simply mix together finely shredded red onion with thinly sliced cucumber, fresh chopped mint, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little salt.

Croatia Sail to the Islandsby Solange Hando

Croatia is fringed with over 1000 islands, an amazing sight, especially from the air - lush emerald green, long, thin or perfectly circular, bordered by white cliffs and beaches, crisscrossed by tiny ribbons of road that seem to lead to nowhere. One could spend a week or more sailing through this romantic seascape but stay in one of the glorious Dalmatian resorts and you can cruise for a day on a nostalgic galleon, dropping anchor here and there to explore a few of these offshore gems.

Travel

Mljet in the south is wild and unspoilt, two thirds of the island covered in forest. The name means ‘honey isle’ and some claim this is where the nymph Calypso kept Ulysses spellbound for seven years. A few fishing villages are sprinkled along the shore while part of the island is protected by a National Park. There are two lovely saltwater lakes, shimmering turquoise and blue, and shaded trails fragrant with pines.

Also accessed from Dubrovnik is the Elaphite archipelago, a haven of pine forests and olive groves. Only three of the islands are inhabited, including Lopud, famous for sands, rare in Dalmatia, and Kolocep, barely 300 residents but claiming seven pre-Romanesque churches.

Slightly further out into the Adriatic, Vis is the last inhabited Croatian island before Italy, with mountains rising to nearly 2000 feet and vineyards spreading in fertile valleys. Set in central Dalmatia, Vis boasts some of the

best wine in the country, such as the red Plava and the honey-coloured Vugava, excellent with freshly-caught fish or lobster. The island has two small townships, Vis, where a medley of architecture reflects a turbulent past and Komiza, where boats head for the romantic Blue Lagoon on nearby Bisevo.

Of course, you could spend a whole day sailing through this enchanting maze without landing at all, gazing at dolphins pirouetting in the waves and rugged mountains towering on the mainland, but when the boat approaches Hvar, even the most jaded traveller is keen to explore.

Havr greets you with the fairytale town of Jelsa, all donkey and cycle rides, fishing nets drying in the alleyways, rose gardens, sunflowers, waterside restaurants and pastel-hued Venetian palaces dipping their toes in the sea. The fragrance of lavender lingers on the square and now and then a whiff of Croatian folklore echoes under the parasols. It’s well worth leaving the crowds

to wander through the lanes for a glimpse of local life and to the chapel on the hillock for the breath-taking panorama.

From the resort of Baska Voda, it’s just under two hours to Hvar but the return trip includes a stop on Brac, the largest island in central Dalmatia, world famous for the local stone used to build the White House in Washington.

Bol is a pretty little town with red roofs and white walls nestling around the harbour. It’s a couple of miles to the beach, by land train or on foot, along a shaded promenade where souvenir stalls sell lace and Brac stone turned into clocks or candle holders. Finally you reach the long broad spit of the Golden Cape, jutting out into the sea, a favourite spot for windsurfers and sun worshippers. The pebbles are as white as the stone and the water is beautifully clear but in the distance the galleon beckons, ready to conclude the cruise in time for a perfect Adriatic sunset.

Three great processional services mark Advent, Christmas & Epiphany in Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral is the setting for three great processional services which celebrate the special time of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. The Advent Procession ‘From Darkness to Light’ takes place on three

consecutive evenings, Friday 25th, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th November. The Christmas Procession is on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd December and The Epiphany Procession on Sunday 15th January 2012. David Halls, Director of Music, conducts the Cathedral Choir of boy and girl choristers and lay-vicars.

Many hundreds of people from throughout the diocese and beyond are expected to attend one or more of these imaginative and spectacular services, devised by the Canon Precentor, Jeremy Davies. “I see Advent, Christmas and the Epiphany as the ideal time of year for using the Cathedral as it was originally envisaged, as an arena for processions and the great tradition of ‘worship on the move’.

However these processions also invite us on an interior spiritual journey as we try to find the meaning and purpose of life.”

The Advent Procession – From Darkness to Light

Friday 25th, Saturday 26th at 7.00pm (doors open 6.00pm) and Sunday 27th November at 5.00pm (doors open 4.00pm)

This is one of the most popular services of the liturgical year. It begins with the Cathedral in total darkness and silence before the Advent Candle is lit. The service is a mix of beautiful music and readings during which two great processions move around the different spaces in the building which is, by the end, illuminated by almost 1300 candles. Admission is free but entry on Friday 25th is by ticket

only. Written applications should be made to the Dean’s Secretary, Lizzie Rowe, The Chapter Office, 6 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EF. Please provide a stamped addressed envelope and indicate the number of tickets requested (maximum 4).

The Christmas Procession

Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd December at 7.00pm (doors open 6.00pm)

This is the Cathedral’s carol service with readings interspersed between carols. Here the focus of the procession is the Christmas Crib and the story of the birth of Jesus. These services begin at 7.00pm (doors open 6.00pm). Admission is free and no tickets are required.

Those who wish to arrive early

will be able to queue under cover in the Cloisters where seasonal refreshments are available before both the Advent and Christmas services.

The Epiphany Procession

Sunday 15th January 2012 at 4.30pm

This service commemorates the journey of the Magi travelling from the East to worship the baby Jesus, and follows him through his early life and into manhood.

Please note there can be no admission once all seats are taken. There is no public parking in The Close however parking is available for Disabled Blue Badge holders. For further information visit the Cathedral’s website.

Hedge your boundary

Garden

Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging.

Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with well-established root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge.

So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m

especially fond:

Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade.

Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime.

Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable

plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries.

Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants.

Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre

34 | The SP5 Magazine

Page 35: SP5 Nov 2011

feeling some evergreen hedges can bring.

Thuja plicata: Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and is often used when one would like some aspects of a Leyland hedge but wouldn’t want its potential to get out of hand. The foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed.

Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils.

Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive

variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer.

Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade.

Whichever of these fantastic options takes your fancy, don’t forget the planting basics:

Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather.

Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly

late autumn to late winter or very early spring.

Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure.

Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart.

Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.

Top tips for sellers to help improve their chances of a quick sale?1. Finish off the little jobs around

the house. Those jobs that you’ve been putting off for ages, it could be filing down a door that sticks each time you open it, it could be putting back a bit of skirting board or kick board underneath the kitchen unit, anything that is going to improve the

presentation of the property as a whole. That’s the first thing.

2. Re-decorate the rooms that need to be re-decorated and clean the carpets. Redecorating may be taking off the frieze in the old children’s bedroom. It could be re-painting a dark room a more neutral colour to make it look certainly more spacious and light.

3. My third suggestion would be to de-clutter. Don’t worry about using the garage as being a dumping ground for all those things that you haven’t got anywhere else to put. Buyers don’t expect to see the space in a garage so that’s fine. But de-clutter in all the other rooms and make sure that people can see the size of the rooms by making sure they can see the carpets.

4. Make sure that you maximise the flow of the property for potential viewings. Look at the furniture and the way you have the furniture arranged in it. A

classic example would be double doors through from the sitting room into a dining room where an owner has inadvertently put a big sofa up against the double doors because it suits them to do so. In terms of showing the property, that’s an absolute “no no” because it makes people think that the property does not have a natural flow and or that the room in question must be small or awkward to furnish.

5. The fifth and final suggestion would be to make sure that the garden is presented neat and tidy and that if you have an “overlooking” problem, that you fence and plant trees appropriately to best screen you from prying eyes! The importance of the garden is vital and should not be underestimated!

6. Price the property sensibly to generate early interest and offers while the property is new to the market.

1. Check the internet. Sites like www.petrolprices.com are invaluable as they’ll not only tell you where to find the cheapest petrol near your postcode, they’ll also tell you the highest, lowest and average prices in your area.

2. Drive more efficiently. The experts tell us that it’s possible to cut 60% off your fuel bills just by driving more carefully. Don’t ‘warm up’ the engine, accelerate gradually (try to stay under 3000 revs), avoid sharp braking, drive in the correct gear and at your car’s optimum speed. Stay aware of your positioning and the road conditions ahead to avoid sudden movement.

3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighs a lot so find a balance between not having to go to the petrol station that often but not carrying a full tank either, rather aiming for between one half and three quarters.

4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a huge factor in

fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in the car. Take off roof racks which add wind resistance and force your engine to work harder.

5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to find out what the levels should be and ensure they don’t dip lower than this. This will mean your car needs less oomph to keep it moving.

6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars have air conditioning on by default and it does use an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’s turned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreens sparingly. However if it’s really hot do use your air conditioning because driving with open windows causes drag and is even less cost effective.

7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highly tuned performance car, the difference isn’t noticeable enough to

warrant the extra cost.

8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check out www.petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill up at a supermarket station when you’re doing your regular shop, particularly if they have a petrol promotion running and if you have a loyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’t be caught out with an empty tank when your only option is a motorway service station.

9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Cold starts are inefficient so plan ahead and try to do more than one errand when you go out.

10. Last but not least, turn the engine off if stuck in a jam. The general rule of thumb is if you think you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, it’s worth switching off.

Top 10 Tips for improving fuel efficiency

We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuel has rocketed over the last few years. Does anyone remember when it cost less than £1 per litre? Believe it or not, according to the AA, it was only a little more than two years ago in May 2009. Whilst we can’t do anything to beat the increases, there are ways we can minimise its impact. Here are our top 10 tips for improving fuel efficiency.

Working from home

Whichever IT whizz it was who decided that solitaire should come as standard with personal computers ought to be bloody well shot. Twice, if need be. And tazered first, just to drive home the message.

Nothing is less conducive to putting in a morning’s solid uninterrupted work. Nothing is more destructive of productivity. It’s a horrible corrosive addiction that can devour whole swathes of precious minutes – 10 or 15 at a time, if you’re not careful, sliding by unnoticed while you and your mouse dutifully pile card upon card.

Back in the office days, of course, when a line manager would occasionally pass majestically by, being caught with solitaire (or patience, as it used to be called before the US inherited the earth and all that therein is) up on the screen was a disciplinary offence, as was sending personal emails or using one’s own mobile in office hours. Now I Work From Home I am my own line manager, and I seem to have learnt a degree of defiance I could never muster when I was a humble employee. “Stop doing that and get on with some work,” I tell myself

magisterially. “No,” I reply, surprising myself with my devil-may-care wilfulness.

Actually, I used to play patience for hours on end in the days when cards were actual physical objects. I kidded myself that it cleared my mind and helped me wind down before going to bed. And suddenly it was half past one in the morning and I was still glued moronically to the kitchen table laying out game after game. Now I have solitaire on my PC I make the same sort of lame excuses – “I’ve got intro-block and I need to empty my mind” is a personal favourite. When I’m on the phone I lay out a game while I’m waiting for the callee to pick up. The game is resumed when the call is finished but is all too often succeeded by another and another.

What is it that is so addictive about solitaire? It’s a strange game: mechanical, repetitive, and so determined by the random fall of cards that skill and concentration can’t guarantee a win. On the other hand, you can guarantee to lose without at least a minimum of skill and concentration, so there’s a curious paradox: it’ll harm you if you don’t stay sort of awake and

alert, but it won’t really help you if you do.

In that sense it’s rather like some sort of production-line work: you repeat the same action over and over again, paying just enough attention to spot and head off a breakdown. And this is precisely how hypnosis works: you reduce the broadband width of your attention span until there is only one stimulus you need to respond to. The rest is a vacancy.

Anyway, telling myself that I’m hypnotised is a convenient get-out: it means that I’m not really responsible for my own actions, that I’m not just a lazy slob who needs to buckle down and get on with it, and that the programmer who devised the game in the first place is the real villain who deserves to suffer for what are, after all, my own actions.

It also makes me grateful that I’m a virtual computer illiterate without the basic skills to learn anything more complicated than solitaire. Because if I really got into computer games, I’d never do any work at all!
