NHA Memo Circular No. 2018-029 dated October 12, 2018 provides the updated guidelines for the implementation of a housing assistance program for indigenous cultural communities/Indigenous Peoples (IPs), to improve the living conditions of IP women, men and children by providing them decent shelter. Four hundred (400) families, 1,886 persons. These are among the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the

Zamboanga City siege in September 2013 who lost their homes but who now live in permanent shelter. After three (3) years being housed in temporary housing, they now live in permanent homes provided by the Community and Family Service International (CFSI) under its Zamboanga Recovery Project (ZRP). The CFSI, a humanitarian organization committed to peace and social development, with particular interest in the psychosocial dimension, is among several agencies which helped the siege victims rebuild their lives. It accessed funding support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade-Australia and collaborated with the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) as its implementing partner for the project.

The CFSI worked closely with the Zamboanga Local Government and the NHA to provide assistance to the affected population. Ashran Rasmen, a shelter unit beneficiary in Phase 4, Vale Vista, Kasanyangan shared, “We are very happy because our family now has a permanent home after three (3) years of transferring from different evacuation centers and transitory sites. In addition to this, the livelihood assistance from ZRP has improved our lives as we now have sources for our everyday needs. I have also helped support my siblings with the skills I developed from the trainings that the project provided. We are forever grateful to all the agencies who have helped us in so many ways.”

Under its ZRP, CFSI provided various services to a total of 54,000 individuals which included psychological and protection services, support to host communities, and health and disease surveillance. This was implemented from 01 January 2015 to 31 December 2017. All of the project’s efforts led to the achievement of the project objective to promote human security of IDPs.

Lumaban, nasawi at may naiwan.

The earth’s climate system has drastically changed since the late 1800s. This caused global warming. Global warming is the rising temperature of the earth’s surface. Rising sea levels, extreme weather like typhoons Haiyan or Yolanda, and the expansion of deserts are just some of the effects of global warming.Surface temperature increases causing the arctic glaciers, permafrost and sea ice to melt. It also increases rainfall and snowfall while causing droughts and wildfires in other regions. Just recently, the internet was bombarded with articles, memes, and photos of the wildfires that caused destruction in the Amazon forest and the forest fires in Indonesia that brought about smoke or haze in the Philippines.

Human activities contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions which is also a factor in causing global warming, thru landfills

and incinerators. Zero waste management is a principle geared towards decreasing the amount of waste. It is designed to encourage consumers to recycle and reuse products. Its main goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the oceans. This movement is a call to action for companies or enterprises for innovation to participate in Zero waste management.

Government, private companies and institutions, along with every consumer, should work together in minimizing waste and promote discipline in taking care of our planet. Active campaigns, policies, and advocacy to create awareness and get the message across are much needed in order for this advocacy to be successful. Most importantly, discipline and love for our planet should start within ourselves. And please, clean as you go.

Soda cans can be seen almost everywhere in our everyday lives. People buy drinks in cans and after drinking, just throw them away. Little did I know that soda cans can help a community to have clean and potable water to drink. And not only soda cans are useful. Even PET bottles can be used in building a house.

I learned about this when I met mem-bers of a non-government organization called I Can Make a Difference Inc. They make innovative, environment-friendly houses using cost-efficient technology to help far-flung communities. I started volunteering in the said organization and have witnessed how people are pleased and interested in what we do. I see their smiles and see how our work have actual-ly changed their lives.

My experience with I Can Make A Differ-ence has made my interest in doing volun-teer work grow. In volunteering, I am not only helping people in a community. It also is helping me grow as a person, build-ing my character. I am personally experi-encing that life is not always easy. It takes determination to keep moving no matter how hard it takes.

May magagandang kuwento.

MY TALKING PASSPORT

Public speaking has been my personal nightmare, ever since I began to learn the English language. This story will tell you how I was able to convert my nightmare into my vessel to journey towards success.

Back in my high school days coming from a Visayan tribe and a family that values our dialect, it was an everyday struggle for me to open my mouth, standing in front of a lot of people. Once I started to speak in English, everything seemed to be a wild roller coaster ride. I was scared to be laughed at because of my action and grammar, and worst of all, my pronunciation.

I lived in that shadow of fear for quite a while. One day, I found myself sitting in our home library holding a book, telling myself I needed to have confidence and master English.“I will be the master of my own fear,” is what I told myself.

Almost a decade after, I found myself in the field which I feared all throughout my life., But I was able to handle it, as if it was my own.

Until this very day, I remember what my boss told me before. “Roy, your voice and the way you communicate will take you to places”. And indeed he was right. I talk to a lot of people almost anywhere and my confidence and ambition has became my talking passport.

I spent 16 years in the southernmost part of Mindanao -- Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi. The way of living there is simple and

peaceful. My elder sister and I were raised simply and loved by two (2) teachers, our parents.

At the age of eight, I lost my beloved man, my Dad. Way back then, I did not see the struggles of my mom, being a single parent. I know we gave her a hard time, raising two beauties with different personalities on her own. When I reached college, miles away from home, realization struck me. Life was not as simple as I thought it was. That what I wanted, I could get. Hence, I had to fight the currents and waves that went against my way to avoid getting drowned. I learned to appreciate how my mom who was knocked down by problems, obstacles and challenges. She inspired me to be strong and to always seek for Allah’s guidance.

Now that I have been working at NHA for two (2) years, I am thankful of the lessons I learned from home, from school and from my environment. My hometown has always been my inspiration to pursue development as we seldom received social services from government, NGOs and other groups. I am glad that working with NHA, I can put my passion into practice, helping improve the quality of life of Filipino citizens, especially the needy and less fortunate.

I thought development would not happen in my home. But I am grateful to NHA because constituents of my hometown now enjoy decent and free housing. It has given me the courage to get out of my shell, to help introduce development and change in communities.
