It’s always a benefit when an audiovisual integrator gets called into a project early in the construction phase. When Marion First Church of the Nazarene (Marion FCN), a fast-growing church about 50 miles north of Columbus OH was moving to a larger building on the same grounds, Worship Pastor Adam DeWebber and other church leaders knew they’d need the guid-ance of a consultant and an integrator to install the audiovisual systems in the space. They found both in Elite Multimedia (www.elitemultimedia.com) of Memphis TN, a faith-based sys-tems integrator providing systems integration for fixed instal-lations and touring productions, along with equipment rental and sales.

‘Temporary’ StartOriginally, Elite Multimedia was called to install a temporary,

small audio system in an auditorium/gymnasium in the Marion FCN’s old building, which would be used for worship while the main sanctuary was under construction. “This project had been on and off my desk for about a year and a half,” said Elite Multimedia’s Wade Russell. Russell was the systems integrator for the audiovisual and lighting systems, which Elite Multime-dia’s team designed.

The key components to the sanctuary system, including an Avid VENUE SC48 fully integrated digital live mixing console and a Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E production switcher, were all installed in the gymnatorium and moved to the new facility days before its opening. According to Russell, this made implement-ing the new system and training engineers easier. “We were able to train the all-volunteer staff on the key components in the gym, so they were already familiar with the infrastructure and how the components worked.”

He continued, “It made it more seamless to transition from a training standpoint, while moving into the new building. It was a relief for the volunteers. They had a brand new building and brand new audio and video systems, but they were fluent with the interface.”

This permitted the AV consultant and integrator to be able to dig deeper with training in the new worship center, teaching the volunteer team how to maximize the systems’ capabilities for the best sound, to broadcast services throughout the facility and to record for web videos and DVDs.

The multiviewer is intuitive for the church’s volunteer technical staff.

Triple screens offer the flexibility to show image magnification (IMAG), graphics and more. The screen in the middle is electric, rolling up when not in use.

Marion FCN, a church that appeals to all ages, outgrew its worship space, requiring a new sanctuary on existing land.

switcher and ProPresenter software running on a Mac Pro allowed the vol-unteer technical team to maximize the capabilities of the three-screen setup in the sanctuary right out of the gate. The sanctuary sports three side by side 78"x"139" Da-Lite screens. Live camera feeds, lyrics or graphics can be displayed across all three screens, or a different image on each screen, or the same images on the left and right with something different in the center. Russell said he set up templates with variations to show the team what they could accomplish visually. “Once they established that mindset, that they could do whatever they wanted, cus-tomize the look in any number of ways, they were all over it,” he said. “It was cool to watch how quickly they took to it. I was blown away.”

Marion FCN is a Nazarene church that describes itself as “a place full of imperfect people trying to live like Christ did.” The church holds a tra-ditional and contemporary worship service every Sunday. Every aspect of the church is designed to appeal to all demographics in the community, from the use of technology to support the message, to the seating in the church, which has a blend of pew seating and individual chairs and, to add capacity to the 1000-seat sanctuary, stadium seat-ing on the sloped floors leading toward the balcony.

“The design of the sanctuary is kind of unique in terms of catering to what everyone wants,” Russell said. “And I think having people of all ages come to worship is one of the signs of a healthy church.”

The church’s growth over the past few years would lend credence to Russell’s words, as the church had outgrown its old worship space and required the 1000-seat sanctuary to house weekly worshippers. Because the new sanctuary would be construct-ed on existing land, the church held temporary services in the auditorium/gymnasium. This was the first chal-lenge: to design an affordable system that would sound good in the space and could be used for special events

and children’s worship after the sanc-tuary was constructed, while including key components that could transition to the main worship center.

‘Gymnatorium’ Sound Russell and the Elite Multimedia

team, which included audiovisual and lighting lead designer BJ Shaver, start-ed their relationship with the church by designing and installing temporary sound and video systems in the gymna-torium, which would hold 500 congre-gation members as a temporary wor-ship space while the 1000-seat sanctu-ary was being built.

The gymnatorium uses a stereo Electro-Voice PA with two EVF mains and a single 18-inch subwoofer flown in the center and tilted down. This system is powered by E-V CPS amplifiers and controlled with an E-V DC-One signal processor.

Russell noted, “With rigging any electronics and heavy equipment in an environment with heavy activity, you have to take into account the oc-casional bump. You have to take pre-cautions with the rigging and make sure it’s high and out of the way.” He added, “It was a simple system, so we were able to achieve that easily.”

The speaker system remains in the gymnatorium, to be used for children’s worship. The SC-48 console was re-placed with a smaller, owner-furnished analog 16-channel mixer so the SC-48 could move to its permanent home in the front-of-house position in the main sanctuary.

Sanctuary SoundIn addition to being involved from

the early phases of design and con-struction, which eliminated many of the problems typically associated with designing and installing church sound, the integrator was blessed with a bud-get for acoustical treatments. Russell reported that 152 one- to two-inch-thick Purdue Acoustical panels, in a variety of sizes, were installed on the sanctu-ary side walls, back walls, and on the balcony to reduce reverberation and reflections.

Being brought into the project dur-ing the planning stages made speaker

placement easy, as well, but it was still a challenge getting sound to the deep area of the stadium seating and the in-clines heading up to the balcony. The main system is comprised of two Elec-tro-Voice EVF-1152S/64s for far throw, and two EVU-2082/95s for near throw, covering all the floor seating. These are hung to the left and right of the Electro-Voice QRx-218S subs, which sit just offset from the center line of the room and are angled down slightly.

The raked seating is also covered by EVF-1152S/64s and EVU-2082/95s in a far/near configuration. EVU-1082s were installed as balcony fills. All the E-V speakers are powered by CPS se-ries amplifiers, and the system is con-trolled with an Electro-Voice NetMax digital signal processor.

Tannoy iS52s are installed within back boxes in the stage as front fills to cover the first few rows of seating. And, a pair of EV-Z1 speakers serving as choir monitors are mounted directly behind the main PA system, aiming to-ward the area where the choir stands.

An existing Aviom in-ear monitoring system was used for the musicians in the band. Cat5 jacks were installed at the input boxes on stage for custom mobility of stage placement.

A pre-existing Sennheiser wireless system was updated with a G3DIRKIT8

Three projectors power the screens.

active splitter kit for an eight-receiver system. The church uses these wire-less handhelds for the background vocals. “They have the room to ex-pand the system as budget and needs allow,” Russell said. The system is put on the church’s existing network to be monitored with Sennheiser’s software to view status of signal, battery and metering.

Dual Video SystemsOne of the challenges related to the

video integration was creating two distinct video systems in two separate locations: one supports the church’s weekly TV broadcast ministry, titled “By His Spirit,” and another provides graphics, lyrics and image magnifica-tion in the sanctuary. The broadcast feed also goes to the monitors in the lobby for viewers in the café. The broadcast equipment is located in a studio in the church basement, while the system for the worship center shares space with the audio mixer and lighting console at the front-of-house location.

The sanctuary video system tran-sitions easily from a contemporary to traditional worship environment with two fixed side Da-lite Perm-Wall screens and an electric Da-Lite screen that can be raised to show a baptismal, or brought down to create a triple-wide screen measuring nearly 35 feet across. All three are powered by Eiki LC-WXL200 5500 lumen projectors.

The sanctuary video system also in-cludes a 52-inch LG 52LH300C LED

as a confidence monitor on the face of the balcony, and an owner-furnished projector that shines on the back wall as another confidence monitor for the praise team and pastor on the platform.

One of the challenges to the sanctu-ary system was giving the all-volunteer technical staff flexibility in what they could display through an easy-to-use system. Years ago, the ability to easily send any source to any screen would not have been possible. A combina-tion of a Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E production switcher to send any source to any screen and a Mac run-ning ProPresenter 5 with a MultiView module and a Matrox TripleHead2Go external graphics expansion module made it easy for the volunteer staff to configure graphics or video to go to any of the three screens by choosing a template in ProPresenter.

Team Has Options“The aux out on the switcher feeds

an input into the Mac Pro at the front-of-house,” Russell explained. “If the production team wants Feed Camera One to go on the screens in the wor-ship center, they send that from Aux One on the switcher in the produc-tion room to the Mac Pro. They use the Live Camera application in Pro-Presenter to activate the Blackmagic DeckLink card in the Mac Pro, and put a live video on the screen.”

He continued, “They can choose within ProPresenter whether they want the graphic on left and right, just on left or across all three, as well as where they want the camera, and which camera feed they want. Custom-ization is very easy and fluid within ProPresenter using the MultiView.”

Meanwhile, an iMac in the broad-cast suite gives the production team the ability to switch to any graphics, lyrics or camera feed running through ProPresenter and send it to the re-cording, the broadcast feed or four LG 32-inch LED screens in the lobby.

A master control module installed in the Mac at FOH can also control the iMac in order to control the broadcast feed without a second volunteer down-stairs in the broadcast studio. “That

master/slave module in ProPresenter was very helpful,” Russell said. The module was also a timesaver because staff can sync all the files loaded into the FOH computer to any other Mac on the network. Elite Multimedia cre-ated a separate network on Cat5 with separate IPs for both computers and the switcher.

The Eiki projectors in the sanctuary also have network jacks to control the projectors over the network.

The sanctuary video system also includes a 52" LG 52LH300C LED as

a confidence monitor on the face of the balcony, and an owner-furnished projector that shines on the back wall as another confidence monitor for the praise team and pastor on the platform.

ing service in the new sanctuary also shortened the learning curve. The background and experience of the staff also helped the training process. “The volunteers are pretty educated when it comes to IT, so the video team took to the software that makes it work pretty quickly,” Russell said. “Additionally, Worship Pastor Adam DeWebber, who oversees the volun-teers, understands the technical as-pects.”

volunteer staff brought to the project more than raw knowledge or experi-ence that really created impressive results. “The volunteers all have dif-ferent career backgrounds and differ-ent levels of experience with technol-ogy, but they are committed, willing to learn and excited about the system,” Russell said. “When they moved into this new facility, they were blown away by the results of all their training and what the technology could do in the new space.” !
