The Neurotic ParentComes to Santa BarbaraSome people say that get-
ting your kid through the col-lege application process is alot like childbirth—you haveto experience it yourself toreally understand it. Unlikewith childbirth, where theendorphins kick in and makeyou forget most of the painonce you hold that preciousbaby in your arms, the onlychemicals associated withgetting your child into collegeare stiff drinks (for the par-ents) and plenty of aspirin. Luckily, we can now add a
healthy dose of laughter to thecollege admission cocktail, thanks to J.D. Rothman's newbook, The Neurotic Parent'sGuide to College Admissions. With a sassy, sarcastic stylethat reminded me of TheOfficial Preppy Handbook,Rothman does a spectacularjob of skewering the collec-tive craziness that overtakesotherwise rational people dur-ing this phase of their lives. At the same time, it's not justfunny but also provides valu-able insights and incisiveanthropological observationsinto the process."There's a collective neuro-
sis kind of thing that takesplace for parents during thistime of their lives," explainsRothman, who is an Emmy-winning television writer andlyricist in her other work life. After an eye-opening collegetour with her older son (now ajunior at Duke), she startedthe anonymous Neurotic
Parent Blog as away to reflect on thenutty parents whohad "started theirkids in collegepreparatory pro-grams in the fifthgrade," as well asthe "thousands ofshockingly bright, polite, alert stu-dents, all of whomwere vying for herson’s (or yourdaughter’s) spot."Up until that trip, she had
"no idea there was this levelof insanity about the collegeadmission process." The blogquickly caught on and wentviral after a post aboutCornell's hotel's ugly bed-spreads. Rothman admits that she
too got caught up in the crazi-ness. Some of the other stu-dents had out of this worldaccomplishments, like “dis-covering galaxies,” so shewondered how her son wouldever compete.Like many parent trips, the
first one you feel during thecollege application process isguilt. Rothman writes,"Clearly it is all your fault. While you were letting yourchild engage in normal activi-ties like summer camp, babysitting and bowling, other kids were interning fortheir senators, training seeingeye-dogs and starting hedgefunds in Sri Lanka. As aresult, for every impressive
kid, there are 50even more outstand-ing ones."She observes that
even parents whowere "not neuroticabout other thingslike eating andsleeping stillbecame neuroticabout the collegeadmission process.… Thankfully it isusually not bothmembers of a cou-
ple," she laughs."Thankfully" is right.
Though I often want to givetherapy bonds as baby showergifts, this book will make apretty good substitute.Laughter is clearly the best
therapy for Rothman, whooffers up an amusing "prayerfor the SAT" (please protectme from mis-bubbling andusing passive voice, bless mynumber two pencils and pro-tect their points), two pages of"haikus for the neurotic par-ent" and an entire chapterabout "barista readiness" (acollege degree is fine, but atthe end of the day, they'd bet-ter know how to prepare aventi, sugar-free, nonfat, vanilla soy, double-shot,decaf, no foam, extra hot, peppermint white chocolatemocha).Asked if her current book
tour has made her more orless neurotic, Rothman, whowill appear at Chaucer's onSunday at 2 p.m., says, "defi-
nitely more, but now I'm neu-rotic about selling books." Ofcourse it doesn't hurt that heryounger son was recentlyaccepted into his "dreamschool." Unlike the rest of usthere will be no more collegeapplications for her to dealwith in the future—unless thekids don't like being baristasand want to go to graduateschool. The upside? That might
mean there's another book inher future, and ours. Since myson's only in seventh grade—and hasn't, to my knowledge, written any symphonies orcured any diseases—this isdefinitely one book I plan tokeep on my shelf for futurereading. As Rothman says in her
"orientation to college angst,""whether you have a kinder-gartener or a 12th grader, mayyour child's search be full ofmultiple acceptances, gener-ous merit scholarships andchill roommates."If they're not, may you at
least retain the ability to laughat it all!Spend your tax day in a
lively reading and conversa-tion about the insanity ofmodern college admissions atChaucer's Books, 3321 StateSt. Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m.

10 rules for datingin Santa BarbaraDear Boys and Girls,Last week in answering
Miss Christine, I listed “NewRules for Dating” and the rea-sons why. I also promised tofinish the list so here is thereprint of last week’s list anda few more to boot. Of coursethe list can always grow, betweaked and even refined -and the only way to do that isto put it into real-world prac-tice. 1. E x p e c t a t i o n s .
Don’t have any. Good man-ners are the only thing youneed on a first date – expecta-tions, along with the tales ofyour last relationship, you donot. Regardless of the texts, emails, long phone callsetc…no one knows anyone atthis point and any conjectureis only going to lead to disap-pointment which can get inthe way of something con-structive happening. Thisleads us to the next rule...2. Lighten up. The
purpose of a date is to START
to get to know someone. It isnot to ask about tax returns, brokerage statements, andpsychiatric evaluations or geta complete sex history. It is toBEGIN to see if thereCOULD be something more. Not more as in picking outwedding colors or envision-ing a hot, tawdry night butmore as in learning a bit - andI mean a bit - more about eachother. This takes us nicelyto…3. Slow down. There
is no such thing as real love atfirst sight. Sorry to ruin a
thousand movie plots, butlove (the real deal) takes time, commitment and life tests tobe genuine. If you are havingdelicious feelings, enjoy themby all means, but keep themto yourself and perhaps evenconsider not acting on them.I’m not advocating becomingthe human glacier but there isnothing wrong with holdingback and letting things perco-late for awhile. Let things gowhere they will without con-trolling the eventual outcomeand allow your wise and non-hormonally challenged mindto merge with desire anddesire to mature into some-thing better or safer. There isno finish line or award forbest date ever and datingdoesn’t have an Olympicsprint category. 4. Look for signs.
Not signs as in you both can’tlive a day without Tridenttropical fruit gum and there-

North Korean rocket fails
KITTY IN THE CITY
North Korea admitted its much hyped long-range rocket failedto deliver a satellite into orbit on Friday while U.S. and SouthKorean officials said it crashed into the sea a few minutes afterlaunch, dealing a blow to the reclusive state.Pyongyang had defied international pressure from the United
States, the United Nations and others to push ahead with thelaunch timed to celebrate the 100th birthday of Kim Il-sung, thedeceased founder of the state, and to coincide with the ascent topower of his grandson Kim Jong-un.Even close ally China had warned against the launch and
South Korean intelligence officials have said North Korea may beready to follow it up with a nuclear test as it did after a rocketlaunch in 2009, even though it could face more United Nationssanctions if it did.
Apple has rejected the U.S. Justice Department's allegationsthat it colluded with publishers over electronic book pricing, call-ing the charges "simply not true", the Wall Street Journal report-ed."The launch of the iBookstore in 2010 fostered innovation and
competition, breaking Amazon's monopolistic grip on the pub-lishing industry," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told theJournal. The U.S. government had sued Apple and five publishers, say-
ing they conspired to fix the prices of electronic books, andreached a settlement with three of the publishers that could leadto cheaper e-books for consumers.Kerris defended the current pricing structure as parallel to
Apple's mobile software store.
Beiber moves from Boyfriend to SwiftCanadian pop star Justin Bieber has teamed with country
sensation Taylor Swift on a new song for his upcoming thirdalbum, though details were scant as the "Boyfriend" singerkeeps fans guessing.Bieber told British radio station Capital FM in a recent inter-
view that Swift was one of several people he had worked withon "Believe.""I even wrote a song with Taylor Swift, so the whole album
ranges differently," Bieber said."With my music it doesn't only stay in a box. Everything is
so different and that's why I'm so happy with this album," headded.Bieber, 18, did not give the title of the song he wrote with
Swift, 22, nor did he say if the pair would sing it together. The pop singer also has said he worked with R&B star Usher,
rappers Kanye West and Drake, and producer Timbaland.

fore are a perfect match andshould meet the parents thisvery week, but signs that indi-cate something might needsome fact-finding beforethrowing your precious heartout on the table. For example- she talks a blue streak aboutthe latest Chanel collections =Fashion is obviously some-thing meaningful to her andthere are several other impli-cations that need furtherstudy. For example - he can’tstop talking about his ex ineither a derogatory or compli-mentary way = his ex is athird wheel in his life. In themost obvious sense of theword: PEOPLE DO NOTCHANGE OTHER PEOPLE!If you have a serious issuewith someone ever spending$2500 on a purse or being inlove/hate with an ex, do notthink that this moment is any-thing less than a hot pink flagto either move on or get somefacts but keep your heart outof it for the time being. 5. Moving on. This
means that when a date or ashort term relationship is notworking out, it isn’t the end ofanything except the date orthe relationship! It is only areflection that this wasn’t theone for you. Nothing moreneeds to be read into it or suf-fered over. If you learn fromit so much the better, but thatdoesn’t mean becoming fear-ful of what’s up next. On the
contrary you are now evenwiser and clearer about whatyou do need. Try on somethicker skin and let rejectionof any sort help make youstronger, better, smarter.6. Needs. It is always
helpful be it looking for a job,a pet or a date to know whatyou want. However, (and thisis a huge caveat) there issomething to be said for beingopen to possibilities. Open-mindedness allows life tobring to you something won-derful which could have beenshut out due to the precon-ceived ideas or hurts fromanother time. Example:Someone believes that LDR(long distance relationships)never work. They often workout - not always of course -but it isn’t always the distancethat is the issue; thereforewidening to include zip codesoutside of 93105 just mightbe the ticket.7. Projection. There
is a rule of life that you getwhat you project. Like it ornot if a women wears a sexyoutfit she gets sexy com-ments. Burn your bra Ms. Sbut it is true and there is noreason to get your knickers ina twist. No different than aguy being verbally abusive toa waiter…If the shoe fits itwill be worn. And to complete the list,
here are this week’s newrules:8. Actions: It takes
more than just positive think-ing or positive believing toaccomplish change. When
out in 100 degree weather youcan “believe “you are refresh-ingly chilled-maybe evendownright icy but the realityis the thermometer will stillread 100 degrees and unlessyou are Mr. Lizard, you willbe uncomfortably hot. Ittakes action to make change.Which leads directly (as itshould) to…9. Quantum Physics:
Believe it: this modern neu-roscience can actually help -maybe even make or break -our attitudes about dating.Cognitive therapies actuallyuse quantum physics to helpkids with learning issues, helpstroke victims to regain lostfunctions, retrain folks havingissues with memory loss, even improving OCD behav-iors (Google it!). The treat-ment has validity because weknow the brain can beretrained to literally thinkalong new lines. It may takesome time but putting thatconcept into practice meansyou can teach an old dog newtricks. Even one that’s beenusing the same old datingexcuses for years or someonethat is just starting to get intobad dating habits. Use thequantum power of your mindto have an open, happy atti-tude to dating by thinkingnew thoughts repeatedly andtaking new actions. 10. Work: Accept that
dating as well as marriage, being single, widowed anddivorced involves a lot ofwork. There is always some-thing we didn’t expect or did-
n’t even know existed as wecruise through life. Withacceptance comes the matureoutlook that we shouldn’texpect guarantee’s in life, handouts, or anything that wedon’t in some way earn.Dating is no exception to therule. Does that take out thefun? Not really, it helps makeit more fun because rule num-ber 10 takes you right back torule number 1 and the answerlies there. Darling Boys and Girls,
Even the simple act of eatinga perfectly ripe apple isn’t assimple as we would like tobelieve, it just feels as if it is.While enjoying the sweet andcrisp flesh of an apple -reflecton all that had to happenbefore you could sink yourteeth into that little orb - andknow that successful dating isno different. Life has so manysilent as well as in-your-facechallenges it is always inone’s best interest to – like allthings in nature – continuallymove in a forward direction.Knowing you are growingfrom whatever may be, youcan then meet each challengewith an open, positive andgrateful “nice to meet you”attitude.
Have a naughty day!

Idol frontrunnerJessica Sanchezsaved by judges(Reuters) - Jessica
Sanchez, the youngest finaliston TV singing contest"American Idol," was dramat-ically saved from eliminationon Thursday by the show'sjudges as she performed a lastchance song to prove she wasworthy of continuing. With Jennifer Lopez lead-
ing the way, fellow judgesRandy Jackson and StevenTyler stormed the stage andannounced they were usingtheir only "save" to keepSanchez on the show shortlyafter Sanchez was told shehad received the fewest fanvotes this week."Give me that mic!," Lopez
exclaimed as she rushed up toSanchez. "This is crazy!"This season, "Idol" judges
were allotted one "save" tooverride audience votes andkeep a promising contestanton the show. All of them mustagree, and if the "save" hadnot been used by next week'sperformance, it would haveexpired.
Sanchez, who sangDeborah Cox's song"Nobody's Supposed to BeHere" to close out the show, appeared bewildered by bothher last place finish and hersave. Then again, bewilderment
seemed to be a theme of awild evening on the No. 1-rated U.S. TV singing contest.Host Ryan Seacrest began
by directing contestants toopposite sides of the stagewithout telling them whichgroup was safe and whichgroup was in danger of goinghome. With three singers ineach group, Seacrest toldremaining contestant SkylarLaine that she would stay andinstructed her to "pick thegroup you think you belongwith."After a shocked Laine
protested, Seacrest guided herto a group he finally pro-nounced as safe, leaving EliseTestone, Joshua Ledet andSanchez in the bottom three. All three judges expressed
confusion and dismay withthis outcome. At the end ofthe show, Jackson admon-ished audiences to vote morewisely. This week, audiences
judged contestants based onperformances of songs fromthe present decade inWednesday night's telecast.Thursday's results episode
featured two performancesfrom former "Idol" contest-ants. Jennifer Hudson, whoreceived an assist from Ne-Yo, sang "Think Like a Man",and James Durbin sang hissong "Higher than Heaven.""Idol", which first aired in
on Fox in 2002, has launchedthe careers of singers KellyClarkson and Adam Lambert.Audiences vote for theirfavorite performers by phoneand text message each weekas contestants are challengedby a variety of musical styles. The winning contestantreceives a recording contract. This season's winner will bedecided in May.

Romasanta familyplans 3-story hotelA new lower State Street
hotel development by theRomasanta family is a stepcloser towards a formal appli-cation.The design got positive
remarks from the SantaBarbara City PlanningCommission’s conceptualreview yesterday. The new hotel would span
three stories on a 19,500-square-foot lot at 101 StateStreet at the corner of MasonStreet, currently occupied bya parking lot. It would hold 34rooms, lobby, laundry, and 34parking spaces. At 37 feet, thebuilding is designed withSanta Barbara’s signatureSpanish-style architecturewith minimal impacts onmountain views.
“Really this is about creat-ing a project that is going tomake sense on this site,”Architect Brian Cearnal said. For years, developers have
been eyeing the last fewblocks before State Street hitsthe ocean as an area ripe forredevelopment. The LaEntrada project has been onand off in several years. Thislatest hotel is being paid forby Romasantas, better knownfor their ownership of theHarbor View Inn.To get built however, the
project needs modifications toits setbacks, the distance thestructure must be away fromthe street. Current guidelinesrequire a 20-foot setback forbuildings of the proposedhotel’s size along that area ofState Street to maintain an“open” feel.
The project needs to shrinkthe setbacks to 12 feet on theState Street side and eliminat-ing the setback along parts ofthe Kimberly Avenue side. The guidelines are not set
in stone and are subject toadjustment from the planningcommission and Cearnal andMark Romasanta to maketheir case to the commissionin a conceptual review yester-day.They found a receptive
audience in the commission-ers. The commissioners allapproved of the proposedmodifications and praisedCearnal’s design work.Commissioner DeborahSchwartz said the designshowed great respect for thescale, history, and views ofthe street and mountains.

“I think it adds to the revi-talization of lower StateStreet,” Schwartz said. The commissioners did

it’s so trite but it’s so impor-

gives guests and visitors abetter view of the street andscenery and could make for agood breakfast spot for peo-ple watching. “That just seems like a no-
brainer to have that wall staylow and have it be part of theexperience of the plaza,”Larson said. The plan also has two of
the 34 parking spaces out infront of the hotel.Commissioner Mike Jordansaid the hotel might be betterserved to seek a parking mod-ification to eliminate them—regulations otherwise require
one parking space per room—and use the space to make amore open courtyard area.Commissioner Addison
Thompson agreed, pointingout that the parking spotswould require a driveway anda view into a parking lot.“I would be more in favor
of having a parking [modifi-cation] than having two park-ing places in your front yard,”Thompson said.Commissioner Bruce
Bartlett recused himself toavoid the appearance of aconflict of interest with hisinvolvement in the nearbyEntrada project. However the meeting had
been a conceptual review andthe commission took noaction.
