DESCRIPTION

Beautiful beaches and stunning weather are two reasons why Santa Barbara is paradise. Safely enjoying the sunshine is important for all ages, but especially for our youngest beach bums.Sun exposure at a young age can increase the chances of developing skin cancer later in life. Seeking shade and avoiding direct sun during the peak hours of 10 am to 4 pm will reduce harmful ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure.

Old Spanish Days decidedto name two Junior Spirits ofFiesta in an effort to rekindlepassions for Santa Barbara’stop celebration that have beendampened in the wake of acontroversy over the originalwinner's age.OSD released a statement

yesterday saying that bothSadee Broida and originalrunner-up Jesalyn McCollumwill serve as the Junior Spiritswhen Fiesta hits SantaBarbara in August.“As a result of our investi-

gation of the facts, and in thespirit of community celebra-tion and unity, the board ofOld Spanish Days has decid-ed that two talented youngladies will serve as JuniorSpirits this year: SadeeBroida and JesalynMcCollum,” the statementsaid. The solution mirrors one

advocated by the McCollumfamily. In a statement onMonday, they urged the boardof directors to have twoJunior Spirits. They said Jesalyn and

Sadee had become friends

and they didn’t want to seeSadee stripped of her title.“Jesalyn would be honored

to hold this reign with herfriend Sadee Broida and bothgirls could bring integrityback to the Old Spanish DaysOrganization and the Spirit ofFiesta,” the McCollum state-ment said. The Broidas returned the

sentiment on Thursday.Leticia Broida, mother ofSadee, said all the parentswanted to see the childrenhappy and her daughter ishonored to be sharing the titleand stage with McCollum.“What better way to honor

El Presidente’s decree of‘Viva La Familia’ than tobring two families and studiosto work together?” Broidasaid. The 12-year-old Broida

had been announced as the

new Junior Spirit at the audi-tions on Saturday. But rulesoutlined in the applicationhad stated that the competi-tion is open only to kidsbetween 9—11.Her win sparked an outcry

from many community mem-bers that Broida’s family anddance instructor had misleadOSD about Sadee’s age anddemands that she have hertitle revoked. The Broidasdenied any wrongdoing ontheir part. They claimed Fiesta pro-

motional materials had saidthe competition would beopen to 12-year-olds andthought Broida had still beeneligible when they applied. They still thought things

had been fine when OSD hadaccepted her application andinvited her to the mandatorymeeting. The Broidas did receive a

phone call in March tellingthem that Sadee had been tooold for the competition butthe board opted to let hercompete considering the mis-take had been on OSD’s part. The OSD’s statement said

their volunteers worked hardevery year to produce Fiesta, but acknowledged that the

organization “blew it” duringthe process, expressed regretfor the trouble it caused, andvowed to review its proce-dures to prevent it from hap-pening again.“We fully recognize and

sincerely apologize for ourerrors and inconsistencies, which have led to more mis-takes and misunderstanding,”the statement said.Instructors from both

Broida and McCollum areready to leave the troublebehind.Paloma Rios, Broida’s

instructor, said this is the bet-ter solution at this point andhoped both girls could moveon now.“We want to move forward

in the spirit of Fiesta,” Riossaid.Linda Vega, dance instruc-

tor for McCollum, said it’dbeen an excellent solutionfrom OSD and now the com-munity could focus on thecelebration in August.“With this decision it’s

time for all of us to turn apage, celebrate all of theSpirits of Fiesta, and look for-ward to a wonderful Fiesta2012,” Vega said. “Viva LaFiesta!”

On one hand,Ashleigh andAndrew Henning are practi-cally perfect candidates toqualify for a home loan: ter-rific credit, steady income, and a sizable down-paymentsaved over many years. Onthe other hand, the Henningsare unusual in the homebuy-ing arena - first, they arerather young. And, Ashleighis self-employed, havingrecently started her businessas a professional photogra-pher. Being self-employedgenerally means that you willneed to prove that yourincome is regular; this addsanother significant layer ofdocumentation required bythe lender. And most lendersinsist on at least two years' taxreturns to prove that your

business is viable. On the plus side, the

Hennings demonstratedfocused and mature financialmanagement skills. Whilestill in their twenties, theHennings saved 20% for adown payment on a home.

(OK, let's pause here - whatan accomplishment, in thiseconomic climate!) If you areimagining that they were ableto do this because they livedin a low-cost area for housing, think again. They saved theirsizable downpayment whileliving in two cities notable forhigh housing costs: Boston(Back Bay, no less!) and LosAngeles. And they boughttheir first home in SantaBarbara - of all places. With all the turmoil, fear

and negativity in the housingarena, how in the world didthey manage? To be upfront,it wasn't easy, or simple forthem, but the applied twoessential and basic elements

U.S. helicopter crashes, 4 feared dead

PEDIATRICS IN PARADISE

A U.S. military helicopter went down in poor weather inAfghanistan on Thursday, the military said, in a crash that offi-cials believed may have killed all four people onboard.A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity,

said the Black Hawk helicopter crashed in the RegionalCommand-Southwest area, which includes the traditional Talibanstronghold of Helmand province. Poor weather appeared to havebeen the cause of the crash.Another official said all four people aboard the helicopter were

feared dead.Almost 3,000 foreign soldiers have died in Afghanistan since

the West's war against the Taliban and other militants began in2001. Despite a resilient insurgency, the United States, like itsNATO allies, plans to withdraw most of its combat troops fromthe country by the end of 2014.

Nearly a decade ago he was dubbed "Bush's Brain," for hisinfluence in guiding Republican George W. Bush to the U.S.presidency.This year, Karl Rove could be Mitt Romney's brawn.Perhaps no one, besides Romney himself, will have a greater

influence on the course of the Republican presidential campaignthis fall than Rove, the brash, often-controversial architect ofBush's two successful bids for the White House.Bush called Rove "Turd Blossom," a term Texans use to

describe a flower that grows from a pile of cow dung. This year, thanks to the American Crossroads "Super PAC" organizationthat he co-founded, Rove will have vast resources to fertilizeRomney's campaign: a massive wallet, one of the loudest mega-phones in conservative media, and close ties to Romney's cam-paign.

One in four lack health insuranceAs the U.S. Supreme Court ponders the fate of healthcare

reform in the current election year, a study released on Thursdayshows that one in four working-age Americans went withoutinsurance at some point in 2011, often as a result of unemploy-ment and other job changes. The study by the Commonwealth Fund polled 2,100 people

aged 19 to 64 and found that 26 percent of non-elderly adultswent without insurance -- a percentage that researchers saidequals about 48 million people when measured against U.S.Census data. The Commonwealth Fund, a nonprofit organizationthat analyzes healthcare issues, said that seven in 10 of those wholost insurance spent a year or more without coverage, partlybecause plans sold on the individual market for health insurancewere unaffordable.

Safely enjoying theSanta Barbara sunBeautiful beaches and

stunning weather are two rea-sons why Santa Barbara isparadise. Safely enjoying thesunshine is important for allages, but especially for ouryoungest beach bums.Sun exposure at a young

age can increase the chancesof developing skin cancerlater in life. Seeking shadeand avoiding direct sun dur-ing the peak hours of 10 am to4 pm will reduce harmfulultraviolet (UV) ray expo-sure.If you have an infant under

six months of age, it is best toavoid the sun as much as pos-sibleDressing infants in light-

weight long pants, long-sleeved shirts and brimmedhats can help prevent damag-ing sunburns. When appropriate clothes

and shade are not availableand you must be outdoors,

parents may applysunscreen toexposed areas, such as the face, neck and the backof the hands. Before you ask,

"I thought I could-n’t use sunscreenon a baby youngerthan six monthsold,” it is impor-tant to rememberthat sunscreenshould be used as alast resort. Thesafest way to pro-tect your infant is to avoiddirect sun exposure in the firstplace. Before widespread appli-

cation, first try a smallamount of sunscreen on yourbaby’s leg to make sure that itdoes not cause irritation. Please be careful not to getsunscreen too close to yourbaby’s eyes.

Sunscreen withUVA and UVB pro-tection and SPF (sunprotection factor)greater than 15 is rec-o m m e n d e d .Sunscreen is mosteffective whenapplied 30 minutesbefore going outside.Older children andyoung adults shouldapply about oneounce of sunscreen atleast every 2 hoursand reapply afterswimming, surfing

and sweating.Don’t forget about using

sunscreen on a cloudy day.UV rays can penetrate May

gray, June gloom and yourclothes too. Cotton clothingwith a tight weave may keepmore UV rays off of yourunsuspecting skin. Wearing ahat with a 3-inch brim willhelp keep sun off of the face

and neck regions. When shopping for sun-

glasses, look for ones thatblock 99-100% of the UVrays. Since our eyes dilatebehind darkened lenses, sun-glasses with poor UV protec-tion will actually invite moreultraviolet rays into your eyesand can be more harmful. We are so fortunate to live

in paradise. With some stellarplanning, sunscreen, sun-glasses and shade we can pro-tect our skin and have fun inthe sun.

Leslie the bag ladyIt’s taken me a while to get

to this point. I’ve struggledand the results haven’t alwaysbeen pretty, but I can nowadmit, loudly and proudly, that I’m a bag lady. Theweight of my big fat carbonfootprint has been keeping meup at night for years—not tomention all those agonizingtimes I’ve had to resolve theeternal debate between paperand plastic—but this year onEarth Day I’ll have a littlemore spring in my stepbecause I’m finally, consis-tently doing one environmen-tally-friendly thing right.I’m a bag lady.I’ve got a lightweight,

foldable, little chartreusegreen number tucked away inmy purse, ready to pull out atthe pharmacy or the library. And my car’s trunk is loadedwith a vast assortment of can-vas bags to be used for gro-cery shopping, picnics and allof the random sports equip-ment that seems to attachitself to my son.Inside the house we’ve got

tradeshow swag bags adver-tising products no one’s everheard of, reusable bags withdividers to hold wine, insulat-ed bags to keep beer andsodas cold, and a scary num-ber of canvas bags with thenames of my employers whohave long since gone out ofbusiness.

Note to the Daily Sound:do not give me a bag withyour name on it.It took a while for me to

make the bag lady transition. Istarted accumulating reusablegrocery bags a few years ago, keeping them in my trunk sothat they’d be ready wheneverI went shopping. I can’t tellyou how many times I leftBen and Jerry melting in thecart while I ran outside to getmy canvas bags. Despite thefact that we should all beequally invested in preservingthe environment, I’m sorry tosay the people behind me inline didn’t really take a globalview of that particular situa-tion.Rather than further alienat-

ing Mother Earth by riskingan altercation, I decided tostart purchasing a canvas bagevery time I forgot to bringmy own into the grocerystore. Kind of like my ownpersonal, environmental tax. This is what finally made me

make the change for good—ithad to hit me in the walletbefore I got in the habit ofactually taking the bags out ofthe car before I walked in thestore—my own personal tax.Now I understand that

some people think “tax” is adirty word, so if you’re one ofthose people you can substi-tute “benevolent donation tothe environment” for “tax.”Our local city council hasbeen going back and forth onbagging the plastic bag bans, but personally I think theywould have had more successwith a “benevolent donationto the environment” cam-paign. Or I’ve got an evensimpler suggestion: storesshould just stop stocking dis-posable bags. Use up whatyou’ve got and don’t ordermore.Don’t have a bag? Sorry,

you’ll have to purchase one. That’ll cost you a dollar.Eventually your purse andyour trunk and your garagewill be so full of bags thatyou’ll have to start bringingthem with you when youshop. Talk about an easy wayto change people’s habits. We’d have some pretty

chic bag ladies runningaround Santa Barbara in notime flat.

October Baby:Four Stars,Powerful

In a world where politicallines are often drawn overabortion rights, it is importantthat our artists provide us withexperiences that lift us abovethe partisanship to our sharedhumanity. That is what theErwin brothers provide intheir latest film “OctoberBaby”. Opening the lives of asouthern family when theirdaughter collapses on stage inher college play, we soon real-ize that her illness is based ona deep physical and psycho-logical pathology caused byher premature birth due to a“failed abortion.” What iseven more disturbing is thatshe did not know the circum-stances of her birth or that the

only parents she has everknown are not her biologicalones.Based on a story collabora-

tively written by Andrew andJon Erwin, Cecil Stokes andTheresa Preston, the talefocuses on the college fresh-man Hannah (RachelHendrix). She is a beautifuland sensitive young womanwith a best friend Jason (JasonBurkey) who meets her back-stage before her debut as thelead in the spring play. It isclear that they have had a life-long friendship though theyare unaware of their mutualattraction. This friendship

NEWS

when preparing for home-ownership: persistence andfocus.

Their story begins whenthe Hennings moved back toSanta Barbara after living foreight years in Los Angeles;Andrew instinctively knewthat their projected rentalexpense would be close to amortgage expense.

"I thought we should atleast sit down and learn whatwe could afford," saidAndrew.

Taking the time to learnwhat you can afford is a verybig step, and I always encour-age people to do so.Unfortunately for Ashleighand Andrew, the experienceturned out to be highlyunpleasant. Andrew reportedto me that he and Ashleighhad not only been turneddown by a bank, but that theyhad been laughed at; thisshocked me.

Anyone who seeks mort-gage information should betreated with consideration andprofessional respect. I wasparticularly astonished, because the Hennings hadalready done so much work, and had followed an prudent, even good old-fashioned,approach. They had saved20% for their down payment(this is very unusual); theirincome is steady and verifi-able; and as I mentionedbefore, they had excellentcredit.

After a careful review oftheir entire profile, what sur-faced was not completely asurprise: as potential homeowners, the Hennings' pro-jected income-to-debt ratiowould be uncomfortably high, due in part to Ashleigh's rela-tively new business venture.A high income-to-debt ratiomakes mortgage lenders (andthe investors who buy mort-gages) very uneasy, especiallyin the wake of these last fewyears of mortgage chaos.

"But we knew we veryclose, really close," addedAndrew.

Ashleigh continued, "Weknew we could afford theadditional housing obligation- it turned out we were right. The expenses on the home webought are just about $400more, monthly, than the costof rent we would have paid. And we have more room, which is a bonus."

On paper, the coupleappeared to be risky - butpractically, they knew theywere sound. What happened?"We hadn't considered

asking my parents to co-signon a home loan - but once weunderstood this was anoption, we got to work," saidAndrew.

Andrew continued, "Weapproached my family asthough they were anotherbank. At first, they were a bitnervous; but once wereviewed our history andtalked through the plan, theywere enthusiastic, and sup-

portive."Andrew's parents were

able and willing to co-sign forthe home loan, and very sup-portive through the process. Now, whenever co-signing

is being considered, I alwayscounsel the family to reviewthe facts squarely with eachother. Co-signing shouldnever be a license to buy ahome that is out of reach, norto buy a home that you cannotafford.

And it should be clearlyagreed upon between the fam-ily members whether the co-signer is expected to provideany part of the monthlyexpenses - with Ashleigh andAndrew, from the beginning, that clearly was not the plan."We knew we could afford

the payments; but we couldnot have qualified withoutAndrew's parents' help - weare so glad they were able andwilling," added Ashleigh,"We are just overjoyed to bein our own home."

The example theHennings' responsibility, per-sistence and focus on thelong-term goal is an inspira-tion for those working towardachieving homeownershipwithin your means.Congratulations, Ashleighand Andrew!

provides an opportunity for the film to presentboth Hannah’s innocence as well as Jason’sfaithfulness. When Hannah is with her parents in her

physician’s office to receive the report on thetests he performed to diagnose her collapse, itis then that she is told the truth about her life. Her father Jacob (John Schneider) and motherGrace (Jennifer Price) admit that they had keptthe truth of her birth and adoption from her. Itis not the only secret they have kept. What makes this moment all the more pow-

erful is that Hannah has struggled with a deeppsychological sense of not being wanted eventhough Jacob and Grace have given her no rea-son to feel this way. As she journeys to thecity where she was born in order to find theanswers to these feelings of abandonment, shediscovers that they come from a primal experi-ence of her biological mother’s rejection –both at her birth and now as her adult child. This rejection creates a deep anger, not onlytoward her biological and adoptive parents, butalso toward herself. This cinematic depictionof neonatal rejection is affirmed by some psy-chotherapists as they provide regressive thera-py to those who have survived a “failed abor-tion”.One of the strengths of the film is the spiri-

tual guidance provided to Hannah in aserendipitous encounter she has with a pastorwho reminds her that the hatred she has towardothers can be healed by receiving and givingforgiveness. This truth provides resolution forthe several tensions between the characters of

this tale, just as it does in all of our lives. Asthe credits roll at the end of the film, ShariRigby, who plays Hannah’s birth mother, describes how she had a profound experienceof receiving forgiveness for an abortion shehad 20 years earlier during the filming of thescene when Hannah forgives her for abandon-ing her. That is where art and life intersect attheir best. Discussion for those who have seen this

film:1. Some psychotherapists have identi-

fied primal fears as a characteristic of sur-vivors of failed abortions, like those presentedby the character of Hannah. Do you think thisis to be expected? Why or why not?

2. When Jacob realizes that his owngrief had caused him to hold on too tightly tohis daughter, he made a conscious choice to letHannah go. How have you negotiated thedesire to keep others close while not smother-ing them?

3. The moral integrity exhibited byboth Hannah and Jason when they have toshare the same hotel room keeps their relation-ship not only pure but innocently joyful aswell. Why do you think having moral stan-dards increases the joy in a developing rela-tionship?________________Cinema In Focus is a social and spiritual
