Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Our statue of Mary is back in her usual place in the little

grotto area by the side of the rectory, thanks to Chris

Kielesinski’s artistic hand. Thanks so much Chris for

repairing her. It often seems like there’s something

needing repair around the house, or maybe in our

relationships with one another, or quite possibly with the

Lord himself. The Lenten season prompts us to take a look

at ourselves with the encouragement of praying, fasting,

and giving alms, so that our lives are better in the practice

of faith and charity.

The sacrament of confession is a “repair” sacrament,

helping us to atone for our wrong doings, make efforts to

restore broken relationships, and contribute to the peace

and harmony of our families and friendships. The grace of

absolution frees us to be more determined in our

commitment to holiness, more patient with the faults of

others, and more humble in accepting God’s love in the

midst of our own weaknesses of life. The old adage that

“confession is good for the soul” seems apt to consider

during Lent.

Confessions are scheduled for Wednesday evenings

from 6:30 to 7:30pm, and on Saturday mornings from 10

to 11am. The priests are there to help.

Have a safe week,

‘Return Home’ Through the Sacrament of Confession

Pope Francis spoke about the importance of returning to God, the loving Father, in the sacrament of reconciliation: “...think of this: to return to God is to return to the embrace, the embrace of a father… He is capable of transforming us, he is capable of changing the heart, but he wants to give us the first step: to return. It is not going to God, no: it is returning home!”

Regular weekly Confession available at Good Shepherd Church: Wednesdays 6:30PM - 7:30PM Saturdays 10AM - 11AM

Before Communion:

1. Participation in a livestreamed Mass before receiving Holy Communion is the most suitable preparation for the reception of the Sacrament in these circumstances, and is very strongly encouraged. Please come to the church by car immediately after participating in a livestreamed Mass at home.

Livestream Mass times: Saturday 5:00 PM Anticipated Mass Sunday 9:00 AM Mass Watch: www.youtube.com/user/SOSParish

The priests will be distributing Communion for

approx. 1/2 hour after the end of the Mass.

2. Please also try to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (see Confession schedule) to prepare for Holy Communion.

Drive Up Communion:

1. Follow the direction of the traffic volunteers who will be monitoring the flow of traffic. They will direct you to enter the parking lot at the north gate and exit through the south gate.

2. Stay in the car.

3. Wear a face mask.

4. Roll down your window when you get to the station for Holy Communion.

5. Extend your arm toward the priest and prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist in your hand.

6. Pull your mask down and consume the Host before driving off. Feel free to drive to a parking spot for a time of thanksgiving, though the number of cars in the lot must never exceed 50.

AFTER LIVESTREAM MASS Our Parish

PRAYER VIGIL DAY:

Thurs, March 4th

This Thursday, March 4th, Good Shepherd Church will be open from 7AM to 9PM for prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament which will be on exposition for the entire vigil day. Due to covid-restrictions, there is a max 10 person allowance, so you may call the Parish Office 604-531-5739 ahead of time to reserve your prayer time. 40 Days for Life prayers and intentions will be made available. For those unable to attend the March 4th Prayer Vigil:

you can still pray and/or fast wherever

you are while focusing on the elimination of abortion in Canada.

you can write a letter or an email to our

government leaders expressing your opposition to abortion in Canada.

Let us NOT become discouraged or complacent. God can accomplish miracles through our prayers and fasting when we surrender to His will and purpose and do whatever we can to defend life from conception to its natural end!

Genesis 22:1–2, 9–13, 15–18 Psalm 116:10, 15–19 Romans 8:31–34 Mark 9:2–10

Scott Hahn Reflects on the Second Sunday of Lent stpaulcenter.com

The Lenten season continues with another story of testing. Last Sunday, we heard the trial of Jesus in the desert. In this week’s First Reading, we hear of how Abraham was put to the test.

“[God] said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Gen 22:2)

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all”.

(Romans 8:32)

In the Gospel today, too, we hear another echo. Jesus is called God’s “beloved Son”—as Isaac is described as Abraham’s beloved son.

“Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud: “This is My

beloved Son; listen to Him!” (Mark 9:7)

These readings are given to us in Lent to reveal Christ’s identity and to strengthen us in the face of our afflictions.

In His transfiguration, Jesus is revealed to be the “prophet like Moses” foretold by God—raised from among their own kinsmen, speaking with God’s own authority (see Deuteronomy 18:15, 19). Like Moses, He climbs the mountain with three named friends and beholds God’s glory in a cloud (see Exodus

24:1, 9, 15). He is the one prophesied to come after Elijah’s return (see Sirach 48:9–10; Malachi

3:1, 23–24). And, as He discloses to the Apostles, He is the Son of Man sent to suffer and die for our sins:

He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him.

However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore, and our pains that He carried.

Isaiah 53:3-4

His rising should give us the courage to face our trials, to offer ourselves totally to the Father—as He did, as Abraham and Isaac did. Freed from death by His death, we come to this Mass to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and to renew our vows—as His servants and faithful ones .

Well, one can understand God calling down fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, but how could He ask Abraham to sacrifice his own son? We know God did not intend for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac because the Angel stopped him: “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him.” (Gen 22:12a) But if God didn’t want Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, what did He intend?

The Church has always read this story as a sign of God’s love for the world in giving His only-begotten son. In today’s Epistle, Paul uses exact words drawn from this story to describe how God, like Abraham, did not withhold His only Son, but handed Him over for us on the Cross.

“We have close to us, as much as Joseph had at Nazareth – we have Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, but our poor eyes fail to see him. Let St. Joseph lead you by the hand into the interior sanctuary of the Eucharistic Jesus… Among graces which Jesus gave to His foster-father, is that, special to an adorer of the Blessed Sacrament. That is the one we must ask of St. Joseph. Take him as the patron and the model of your life of adoration.” ~ St. Peter Julian Eymard Hours in need of a Substitute: Mon., Mar. 1, 8 – 12:00-1:00pm Fri., Mar. 5 – 12:00-1:00pm For more info., please call: Sandra Perrin 604-542-6057 or Donna Sali 604 542 3070

What is authentic masculinity?

What does it mean to be a Christian man? Into the Breach is a call to battle for Catholic men which urges

them to embrace wholeheartedly masculine virtues in a world in crisis. Inspired by the Apostolic Exhortation for Catholic men written by Bishop Olmsted of Phoenix, the Knights of Columbus produced a video series which seeks to answer the question of what it means to be a man and how to live as a man in today's world. Watch trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss0i4xuSffQ

AN INVITATION TO ALL MEN in our parish:

join us WEDNESDAYs 7:30PM from the comfort of your home. Starts March 17th

TESTIMONIALS about INTO THE BREACH:

I highly recommend this 12 episode video series and study guide. The videos and group discussions have provided both a learning and an inspirational experience. This is a Must See for all Catholic men and members of the Knights of Columbus! ~ Dan This course informed me of the trials of life and being a man of faith. Each week there was a message of hope and reconsolidation within our lives. The message of love towards our family's and to others; reflects our basic teaching within our Catholic faith. Sometimes our faith is tested on occasion but we must always remember to be the best vision of ourselves and do the right thing with faith, love, and understanding. The discussion within the men's class was frank and honest which was appreciated by myself and showed that honesty is important in our lives. ~ Bill
