Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners, We welcome Fr. Gosbert Mgina to our parish this weekend as a missionary priest from Tanzania in East Africa. He is speaking about the situation of his parish and the people he serves in his area who are in desperate need of a medical dispensary. Our support for this worthy cause will be a big blessing for the ministry to the sick that he and his brother priests are providing. Your donations will be receipted through the parish and sent on to his diocese in just a few weeks in case there are any contributions arriving past this weekend. Thank you for your kindness in this missionary appeal. Our picnic last Sunday was not really rained out since the kids enjoyed lots of games on the field and some families even set up their camp under the trees, while many found a space in the gym to enjoy a completely dry surface for their chairs and blankets. The bbq’d chicken was delicious as always, and several commented that it was sure a good deal for only $5 a plate. In past times a generous donation was given to the parish to augment the cost and keep the ticket price low. That source of funding is no longer being given, so the parish has been subsidizing the cost and this year the total price per plate was $15.23. The days of a cheap chicken dinner are now over! Nonetheless we all enjoyed the moment and a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped to set up the coffee, serve the food and tidy up afterwards. Have a blessed week,

1st Reading: Wisdom 2:12,17–20 Responsorial: Psalm 54:3–8 2nd Reading: James 3:16-4:3 Gospel: Mark 9:30–37

“My son, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for temptation, set your heart right and be steadfast” (Sirach 2: 1-2) The Christian life is a life with temptation. And because of that, we must be prepared for temptation because we will all be tempted. In today’s Gospel, Jesus went with his disciples decisively, resolutely, toward Jerusalem, in order to fulfil his mission - that of doing the Father’s will. Jesus informed the disciples once again what would happen to him in Jerusalem: “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise” (Mark 9:31). But again, the disciples did not understand these words, and they were afraid to ask him (v.32). In being afraid to ask Jesus to delve into an explanation, they thought it was better to stop here. In other words, they gave in to the temptation not to fulfil the mission, that is - a temptation to which Jesus was also subjected to at least twice. The first time was in the desert, with the devil’s three propositions: do redemption but for another, easier life, a life more down-to-earth. Another time, it was Peter who tempted him. When Jesus spoke of his fate, Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him for saying such things. To him Jesus replied, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Mark 8:33). Indeed, Peter was doing the same thing that the devil had done in the desert. Something interesting in the Gospel narrative is that not only did the disciples not want to hear these words they did not understand, they were afraid to ask Jesus about them. The disciples’ difficulty is further clarified in the reading: “When they arrived in Capernaum, Jesus asked them: ‘What were you discussing on the way?’” (Mark 9:33). But they kept silent. But this time they were silent out of shame. Indeed, whereas the first time they were “afraid”, thinking:‘ let’s not ask anything more: it’s better to keep quiet’; this time, they felt ashamed because along the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. They were ashamed of this discussion. It was a two-fold attitude: that of fear and that of shame. Fear because they were good people who

wanted to follow the Lord, to serve the Lord, but did not know that the way of serving the Lord was not easy. Shame because they had the temptation of worldliness - of thinking we are better than others. That temptation is not theirs alone. From the moment that the Church became Church up until today, this has happened, and will continue to happen. For example, it happens in parishes where there are always struggles, where and one might hear someone say: “I want to be president of this association, I will try to climb a little”; or “who is the greatest one here?” “who has done the most here?”; or “I don’t like this person or that person...No, I am more important that he is!”. This is self-exaltation and it is a grave temptation! The temptation of worldliness is where the chain of sins begins. It is a temptation from which the clergy are not exempt. At times we priests say, shamefully, in the presbyterate: ‘I would like that parish...’ — ‘But the Lord is here...’ — ‘But I would like that one...’”. In other words, we follow not the path of the Lord, but that of vanity, of worldliness. And among us bishops, the same happens: worldliness comes as a temptation. And so it happens that a bishop says: “I am in this diocese but I would like that one which is more important”, and he tries to make an impression, to influence, to push in order to get there. The mission is to serve the Lord, but, often, our real desire pushes us toward the path of worldliness in order to be more important. Then there may be disappointment, as it was for Jesus’ disciples, who first kept quiet out of fear, then remained silent out of shame. This is called holy shame!. Let us ask the Lord for the grace to be ashamed, when we find ourselves in these situations. The criterion for choosing our actions, in the face of temptations, is explained by Jesus in the same Gospel passage: “he sat down and said to them, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and servant of all’” (v.35) and taking a little child in his arms, he said: “Become as this child”. Jesus Christ overturned everything. Glory and the Cross, greatness and the child. This is a Gospel passage that leads us to pray for the Church, to pray for all of us that the Lord may protect us from ambition, from the worldliness of feeling that we are greater than others. May the Lord grant us the grace of shame, that holy shame, when we find ourselves in that situation. May he grant us the grace to ask ourselves: “Am I capable of thinking this way? When I see my Lord on the cross, do I want to use the Lord in order to climb?”

Invitation to Altar Server Training Dear Parents: We invite your children, Grades 3 & up,

to serve at the altar of our Lord. Altar serving is an occasion to

be closer to Jesus in the best possible way. It brings the joy of

serving the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. It helps your child grow in

respect and love for the Lord and for one another. It also helps

your child discern their vocation better. Every vocation (whether

marriage, consecrated singlehood, religious life or priesthood) is

awesome and leads us to a greater and deeper understanding and

relationship with God. Altar serving is also a wonderful way to

begin to see that beauty more fully in both priesthood and

religious life. Parents: this will no doubt take your time and commitment. I want

to encourage you to share this invitation with your children, to

give them the opportunity to participate in the life of the Church

and to learn how to become responsible at their level.

New Altar Server Registration forms are available from the Parish

Office and are due by Monday, October 1st as our training

sessions will begin on the first week of October.

May the Good Lord continue to bless your family!

Cops for Cancer stopped at our school on their fundraising tour for cancer research. Cops for Cancer takes place each fall, when over a hundred law enforcement and emergency services personnel from across the province brave all types of weather as they cycle up to two weeks across the daunting terrain of Vancouver Island, Northern BC, the coast of British Columbia and the Fraser Valley. Why? Because the impact of cancer on the life of a child and their family is devastating. Donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society through Cops for Cancer are used to fund life-saving research and caring programs like Camp Goodtimes to reduce its impact on families.

Our school students “dressed down” in gym strips and each brought in a donation. $1162.50 was collected and presented to the team of men and women who rode by our school that afternoon.

Thank you to those who purchased a chance to win Gala Event Tickets.

The winner of 2 tickets ($250 value) will be announced next week.

Good luck to all! Gala Event Tickets go on sale

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1st at 9:00am Ticket ordering info to follow.
