THE SORYLIAN COLLECTIVETe Sorylian Collective is another ancient space aring power.Tey were the second major sentient alien race to be encounteredby humans as they expanded outwards rom the erran Hub.

Te Sorylians are large, bipedal reptilians, heavily built andslow and precise in their movements unless roused to anger orexcitement which isnt very o en. Teir emotions seem to berather muted compared to those o humans or even many o theAquan sub-races.

Teir appearance can vary quite considerably. Some Soryliansresemble ancient erran monitor lizards, while others haveimpressive arrays o crests, spines and horns that bring to mindiguanas. However, these di erences appear to be purely cosmetic, being akin to the di ering skin tones o humans. Regardless, allSorylians have several characteristics in common they are cold-blooded, very tough and resilient and reproduce via egg-laying.

Te Sorylians are an introverted species, mostly pre erring tobe le alone to pursue their own a airs. Long-lived and largely peaceable, they nd the machinations o the younger, more vigorous races, such as humanity, rather con using. Teir society is old, and governed by complex systems o laws and bureaucracy. While not overtly hostile or expansionistic, they generally regardaliens and other outsiders as a nuisance, i they regard them at all.

When erran pioneers rst encounter Sorylian enclaves in theWyndham Cluster asteroid elds, the Sorylians simply ignoredall attempts by the humans to communicate with them. It took many decades, and several minor conficts, to bring the two racesto negotiations. Te Sorylians were content to de ne a permanentborderline simply to be le alone.

Sorylians value stability and permanence in all things. Tey are exceptional scienti c researchers, especially in the elds o physics, mathematics and astronomy. Sorylian observatories aresome o the best o their kind, and access to them is highly prizedby erran scientists.

Te Sorilyans pre er to inhabit planets with largely erran-tropicalclimates, and can survive and thrive equally well on humid jungleworlds or arid desert planets. Sorylian stone and metalwork issome o the best in the galaxy, and their cities consist mostly o large, ornate ziggurat-like edi ces laid out in geometric patterns.

Sorylians are a deeply honourable people once be riended apromise made is a promise to be kept, no matter the odds. Tey do not truly understand the concepts o subter uge and duplicity, although they are aware that these actors are an issue whendealing with other races. Tey can become extremely upset andangry when discovering that they have been played alse.

In ages past, it was this issue that led to them ghting a brie warwith the Aquans over the boundaries o the two dominions in theStorm Zone. Now, the Dindrenzi and Relthoza have attacked theCollective totally unprovoked, driving deep into ancient Sorylianterritory and threatening their capital system, Kerender, itsel .

A er many years procrastinating, the Collective, under Primary Gharadt, has nally been orced to ace reality the Sorylianscan no longer a ord to be isolated. Te process o ghting back against the aggressors will no doubt be methodical in its planningand execution, and thus take time to ully organise such is theSorylian way, even in extremis.

LEADERSHIP AND SOCIETYTe Sorylian leadership structure, both civil and military, is very rigid. Central to their philosophy is that age and experience is thekey to e ective leadership. Given that Sorylians are some o thelongest-lived creatures in the galaxy it is a system that has servedthem well or centuries.

Each Sorylian world is led by a Planetmaster, a position analogousto that o governor. Te Planetmaster the same title is usedwhether the holder is male or emale is appointed rom amongstthe worlds ruling governing body. Known as the College o Ages, this is composed o the oldest Sorylian clan leaders on that world.

Colleges, by tradition, consist o nineteen members, regardless o the planets population size, with the Planetmaster orming thesymbolic twenty. Te Planetmaster represents the world in theGrand College o Ages on Kerender.

Planetmasters are responsible or communicating the policieso the Collective central government to their homeworlds. Teplanetary Colleges then incorporate these policies into thegoverning o their worlds. At the top o the Sorylian politicalsystem is the Primary. Tis is the title given to the Planetmastero Kerender, the ancestral Sorylian homeworld and the capital o the Collective.

Te Primary and the Grand College o Ages ormulate policy orthe whole Sorylian Collective, acting more like the heads o a longchain o command than a representative government. Both theGrand College and the planetary Colleges are advised by a complexsystem o bureaucrats, ministers and technocrats appointed by theCollege to serve as specialists in their respective elds.

Snap decision-making is not something the Sorylians havemuch respect or. Generally, they are wise to take this view, butsometimes, as during the current confict, it has threatened to costthem dearly.

Te current Sorylian head o state is Primary Gharadt. She hasheld her position or nearly our erran centuries. For this reason, she initially strongly opposed signing the Collective up to theAlliance o Kurak. She clearly remembered the devastation causedby the last inter-human confict, and was exceptionally wary o involving the Collective in anything it might later regret.

However, repeated raids by Directorate security ships and pirateson outlying colonies and installations in the years preceding the

Dindrenzi war gradually convinced even Gharadt and the GrandCollege that something needed to be done.

However, even a er signing up to the Alliance o Kurak, andreceiving the bene ts o erran Fold Space technology, thepolitical and military command were typically slow to translateintention into actual action.

Little in the way o deployment changes and patrol routemodi cation took place and, despite its power ul military potential, the Collective was still caught badly o -guard by theadvent o the war, especially the huge Relthoza o ensives in thesouthern regions o the Storm Zone.

MILITARY ASSETS AND TECHNOLOGYSorylian approaches to technology are somewhat curious, and very much refect the character o the race. Te designs o theirships are based on well-established geometric and mathematicalprinciples and a solid core o e ective materials technology.

Sorylians are also highly resistant the e ects o radiation, and soare the only species apart rom humans to make extensive use o nuclear ssion power. Indeed, they have capitalised upon theirresistance, and the knowledge base o Sorylian nuclear physicistsis considerable.

However, this strong technological and scienti c background istempered by the conservative aspects o the Sorylian character.Radical inventiveness is looked upon with suspicion, particularly i its pursuit involves violating well-established principles.

Tis technological conservatism is what sets the Soryliansapart rom the Saurian tribes, another, more reclusive reptilianrace resident in the galaxy. Ancient records indicate that theSaurians split rom the Collective millennia ago in a great schism, apparently related to the ormer races dedication to radicalscienti c innovation.

By ar the most amous example o this behaviour is the Sorylianattitude to Fold Space drives. Te Collectives scienti c community were aware o the practicality o such machines long be ore theerrans. In act, i was rom the study o Sorylian ideas that theerrans devised their rst success ul drives.

Tat the Sorylians never developed the concept on their ownaccount was due almost solely to their deep misgivings about violating so many physical and temporal laws. Tis is, a er all,how Fold Space drives unction by eliminating the physical andtemporal distance between start point and destination.

Many Sorylian thinkers believed that repeated violations o thiskind would weaken the abric o reality itsel . However, since theadvent o erran Fold Space drives, the catastrophe eared by theCollective has not come to pass, and the Sorylians ound that they could not overlook the utility o such devices.

When o ered the boon o Fold Space Drives under the termso the Kurak Alliance, Primary Gharadt agreed to permit theiruse. However, the Collectives feets have been slow to retro ttheir ships with a technology towards which many Sorylians stilldistrust.

Sorylian naval vessels are strongly constructed, using methods andmaterials not dissimilar to those o the errans. Teir hull ormsare optimised or damage resistance; hence the characteristic

cylindrical or ovoid cross-sections and heavy outer shell plating o Sorylian ships o all sizes.

In operation, Sorylian vessels are very similar in concept to erranships. Te bulk o their primary armament is carried broadsideashion, although most Collective vessels also mount power ulsupplementary batteries in their prows or when circumstancesdemand a stern chase with an opponent.

Sorylian naval armament mostly consists o large clusters o massdrivers similar to erran designs. Tese chain- ed weaponshave a very high rate o re. Rather than precision strikes, theSorylians pre er to smother their targets with large box-barrages.

Sorylian gunners use highly e ective geometric and motionpredicting re control systems to anticipate their enemysmanoeuvring.

Te net result is that, more o en than not, a Sorylian salvo endsup occupying exactly the same space as its target at exactly theright time, resulting in an exceptional ratio o hits to munitionsexpended. Tis is very satis ying to Sorylian ship gunners andquartermasters alike.

Sorylian massdrivers use thermal warheads or both armour-piercing and explosive damage e ects. erran observers havelikened the ull broadside o a Sorylian battleship as being akin to

    a gigantic shotgun blast.

Collective warships supplement their gun armament withimpressive thermal torpedo arrays. Like Dindrenzi ships, clusterso these tubes are mounted mainly in the prows o Sorylianwarships, although their heavier ghting vessels also intersperseadditional tubes with their broadside batteries.

Sorylian torpedoes ship multiple warheads or maximumpayload delivery. Tese warheads split o at pre set times a erthe launch vehicle has travelled a certain distance. Tey havea correspondingly greater e ect with late as opposed to early impacts, making them more e ective at longer ranges.

Many Sorylian vessels also carry large numbers o elite Skvarr warriors, armed and equipped or boarding assaults with body armour, fight units and heavy thermal cannons. While theCollective High Admiralty doesnt considered boarding assaults akey part o naval combat, Sorylian crews will not shirk rom suchaction i it is clear that it will garner success.

One nal curiosity o Sorylian warships is their comprehensiveambient temperature controls. Sorylians, being cold-blooded,are liable to become sluggish and torpid i exposed to lowertemperatures or extended periods. Consequently, Soryliancaptains about to enter battle will turn up the internal heatingsystems o their vessels, sometimes by dramatic margins.Te increased temperatures make their crews more alert andaggressive.

Despite the strength o their feets, the Collective High Admiraltysstrategy has been adversely a ected by the rigidity o itsorganisation. Sorylian space is split into operational zones calledSpheres literally spherical areas around their inhabited systems, with radii measured in light years. Each Sphere is overseen by aSphere Sub-Admiralty, commanding a number o Sphere BattleSquadrons.

Te more important a system is, the larger its Sphere will be, and

the greater the number o Battle Squadrons under the commando its Sub-Admiralty. In theory, this is a sound basis or de ence indepth, but in practice, sclerotic Sorylian bureaucracy has impairedits unction.

Because each Sphere is sel -contained, it is considered unacceptableby Sub-Admiralties to trans er ships to other Spheres without theexpress permission o the High Admiralty on Kerender. Moreover, ships o one Sphere will not enter another without the permissiono that Spheres commander, even i in pursuit o enemies.

o compound matters, the High Admiralty has long provedunwilling to trans er orces rom less threatened Spheres, such as

those near the erran Alliance border, to the ront lines.

However, now that Kerender itsel is being threatened, Primary Gharadt is nally orcing her commanders to act proactively. TeSorylian feets are also bene tting rom experienced gained by Sphere Battle Squadrons serving with the newly ormed Kurak Alliance Flotillas in the Storm Zone.

With the heart o the Collective now at long last ully mobilising, itsenemies will soon be orced to ace the ull strength o the Sorylianmilitary juggernaut.

OBJECTIVESO all the powers o the major powers o the Kurak Alliance, theSorylians have su ered arguably the worst material losses to theinitial Dindrenzi o ensive. In addition to being hard pressedaround the margins o the Storm Zone, the Collective has alsoaced a major assault by spearhead feets o the Relthoza

Te main objective set by Primary Gharadt or the Collective HighAdmiralty, and agreed by the other Kurak Alliance powers, is the

elimination o the Relthoza as a threat. Tis satis es the primeSorylian concern that o securing their capital.

Also, in wider terms, the suppression o the Relthoza will assistthe errans in the Storm Zone by weakening the galactic southernfank o the Dindrenzi o ensive. Te Primary and the GrandCollege are also working to loosen the bureaucracy surroundingnaval redeployments, a rst or the Collective central government.

Tis ollows their recognition that the otherwise sound Spheresystem did not respond e ectively to the threat o mass invasion. However, somewhat ironically, the systems very ailure may contribute to uture Sorylian success.

Te outnumbered Sphere feets on the Collectives galacticeastern border have nonetheless managed to blunt the impetuso the Dindrenzi-Relthoza invasion e orts. Te very lack o early redeployment in their support has le the bulk o the Soryliansnaval strength intact in the central and western Spheres.

Tese orces, still mostly at ull strength, are now being trans erreden masse to the warzones in what will undoubtedly be a hugecounter-o ensive e ort exactly the kind o operations at whichthe stead ast, methodical Sorylians excel.
