The surface temperature for snow melting is controlled automatically to reduce operating energy costs. The PM-653 has an automatic start and stop function when used with the Snow/Ice Sensor PM-090. Automatic start with a timed stop is available when used with the Snow Sensor PM-095.

Thetemperaturesensor(thermistor)isbuiltintothesensorenclosure.• Removethescrewandpullthefrontcoveroffthesensor

enclosure.• Theoutdoorsensorcaneitherbemounteddirectlyontoa

wallora2"x4"electricalbox.Whentheoutdoorsensoriswallmounted,thewiringshouldenterthroughthebackorbottomoftheenclosure.Donotmounttheoutdoorsensorwiththeconduitknockoutfacingupwardsasraincouldentertheenclosureanddamagethesensor.

• Inordertopreventheattransmittedthroughthewallfromaffectingthesensorreading,itmaybenecessarytoinstallaninsulatingbarrierbehindtheenclosure.

• Theoutdoorsensorshouldbemountedonawallwhichbestrepresentstheheatloadonthebuilding(anorthernwallformostbuildingsandasouthernfacingwallforbuildingswithlargesouthfacingglassareas).Theoutdoorsensorshouldnotbeexposedtoheatsourcessuchasventilationorwindowopenings.

• Theoutdoorsensorshouldbeinstalledatanelevationabovethegroundthatwillpreventaccidentaldamageortampering.

• Connect18AWGorsimilarwiretothetwoterminalsprovidedintheenclosureandrunthewiresfromtheoutdoorsensortothecontrol.Donotrunthewiresparalleltotelephoneorpowercables.Ifthesensorwiresarelocatedinanareawithstrongsourcesofelectromagneticinterference(EMI),shieldedcableortwistedpairshouldbeusedorthewirescanberuninagroundedmetalconduit.Ifusingshieldedcable,theshieldwireshouldbeconnectedtotheComter-minalonthecontrolandnottoearthground.

• Followthesensortestinginstructionsinthisbrochureandconnectthewirestothecontrol.

• Replacethefrontcoverofthesensorenclosure.

Agoodqualitytestmetercapableofmeasuringupto5,000kΩ(1kΩ=1000Ω)isrequiredtomeasurethesensorresistance.Inadditiontothis,theactualtemperaturemustbemeasuredwitheitheragoodqualitydigitalthermometer,orifathermometerisnotavailable,asecondsensorcanbeplacedalongsidetheonetobetestedandthereadingscompared.Firstmeasurethetemperatureusingthethermometerandthenmeasuretheresistanceofthesensoratthecontrol.Thewiresfromthesensormustnotbeconnectedtothecontrol

whilethetestisperformed.Usingthetemperatureversusresistancetable,estimatethetemperaturemeasuredbythesensor.Thesensorandthermometerreadingsshouldbeclose.Ifthetestmeterreadsaveryhighresistance,theremaybeabrokenwire,apoorwiringconnectionoradefec-tivesensor.Iftheresistanceisverylow,thewiringmaybeshorted,theremaybemoistureinthesensororthesensormaybedefective.Totestforadefectivesensor,measuretheresistancedirectlyatthesensorlocation.

Do not apply voltage to a sensor at any time as damage to the sensor may result.

Snow Melting Overview

Sequence of Operation

Asnowmeltingsystemcanofferasafe,convenient,andcosteffectivewayofremovingsnowandicefromthesnowmeltingslabandsimilarsurfaces.Safetyisincreasedbyactivatingthesnowmeltingsystemassoonasthesnowfallsratherthanwaitingformechanicalsnowremovalaftersnowhasaccumulated.Thiseliminatessliphazardsandreducestheriskofinjurybymechanizedsnowmeltingequipment,therebyreducingpotentialliabilitycosts.Theeliminationofsnowplowequipmentandcorrosivesaltsalsoreducesdamagetotheslabsurfaceandtotheenvironment.Snowmeltingsystemswhencontrolledcorrectlycanbecostcompetitivecomparedtomechanicalsnowremoval.

Thesnowmeltingcontrolhastwooperations:

Melt HeatstheslabtomeltsnoworiceOff SnowmeltingsystemisoffThecontroldisplayshowsthecontroloperationinthehomescreen.

Thesnowmeltingsystemoperatestheheatingequipmenttoheattheslabfromacoldstarttoreachthemelttemperaturesettingtomeltsnoworice.Meltoperationcanbetriggeredautomaticallyusingasnow/icesensor,asnowsensor,orbymanuallypressingthemeltkey.Thecontroloperatestheheatrelayona20minutepulsewidthmodulationcycle.Theheatrelayinturnactivatesanelectricalcontactortoenergizetheelectricalcableheaterinstalledintheslab.Theheatrelayontimeisdeterminedbythecalculated

slabtargetandbythemeasuredslabtemperaturereading.Astheslabtemperaturereachestheslabtarget,theontimepercycleoftheheatrelayisreducedtopreventtheslabtemperaturefromovershooting.Ifnoslabsensorisinstalledtheheatrelayremainson100%ofthetimeuntiltheMeltoperationhascompleted.

Controllingtheslabtemperatureiscriticaltominimizingthecostofsnowmelting.ThisrequiresthateitheraSnow/IceSensorPM-090oraSlabSensorPM-072isinstalled.TheSnow/IceSensorcontainsabuilt-inslabtemperaturesensor.Whilethecontrolwillcontinuetooperatewithoutaslabsensorinstalled,operatingcostswillbemuchhigher.Theslabisoperatedusingslaboutdoorreset.Astheoutdoortemperaturegetscolder,theheatlossoftheslabincreases.Inordertokeeptheslabsurfaceataconstanttemperaturewhileoperating,theinnercoreoftheslabmustbeheatedabovethemelttemperaturesetting.Theamountthattheslabinnercoretemperatureisabovethemeltsettingisproportionaltotheoutdoortemperature.Sincetheslabsensorisinstalledbelowthesurfaceoftheslab,itisnotmeasuringthetrueslabsurfacetemperaturebutrathertheinnercoretemperature.Thecontrolautomaticallycompensatesforthistemperaturedifference.However,theSlabitemintheViewmenudisplaystheactualmeasuredtemperature,soitisnormaltoviewslabtemperaturesthatexceedthemelttemperaturesetting.

ThesnowmeltingsystemcanbestartedmanuallybytouchingtheMeltkeyonthecontroldisplay.Oncemanuallystarted,thesnowmeltingsystemcontinuestooperateuntilthetimesetbytheManualMeltRunTimesettingintheSetTempmenuelapses.

IfamanualstarthasbeenprovidedandaPM-090orPM-095detectswater,thecontrolchangesfrommanualmelttoautomaticoperation.

AutomaticstartandstopoperationrequirestheinstallationofaSnow/IceSensorPM-090.Thecontrolcontinuallymonitorsthesensorforthepresenceofmoistureandslabtemperatureconditionsinwhichsnoworicemaybepresent.Whenmoistureisdetected,thecontrolwillshow“SensorWaterWet”intheViewmenu.Whenthesensorisdrythecontrolwillshow“SensorWaterDry”.ThecontrolincludesaSensitivitysettingintheSetTempmenuthatallowstheinstallertoadjusttheamountofmoisturerequiredtostartandstopthemeltingoperation.Inareaswithlowamountsofdustand/orairpollution,thesensitivitymayneedtobeincreased.TheSensitivitysettingdefaultisAuto,andthecontrolwillautomaticallydeterminethebestsuitablesensitivitysettingfortheinstallation.

Whenmoistureisdetectedandtheslabandoutdoortemperaturesareatthemeltingsetting,thecontrolwillautomaticallystartthesnowmeltingsystem.Asthesnoworicemeltsandtheslabdriesoff,thesensoralsodriesoffatthesametime.Whenthesensorisdry,thesnowmeltsystemautomaticallyshutsoff.Iftherearelowspotsontheslabsurfacethatdryoffslowerthanthesensor,additionalmeltingruntimecanbeincludedbyadjustingtheAdditionalMeltTimesettingintheSetTempmenu.Ifthesnowmeltingsystemismanuallystopped,theSnow/IceSensormustfullydrybeforeitisabletodetectanewsnowfallandautomaticallystartthesnowmeltingsystem.

Manual WWSDThecontrolentersWWSDwhentheoutdoorairtemperatureexceedstheWWSDsettingby1°F(0.5°C)andwhentheslabtemperatureexceeds34°F(1°C).ThecontrolexitsWWSDwhentheoutdoorairtemperaturefalls1°F(0.5°C)belowtheWWSDsettingoriftheslabtemperaturefallsbelow34°F(1°C).ThisallowstheMelttemperaturesettingtobesethigherthantheWWSD.Thisisusefulwhenhighslabtemperaturesarerequiredtomeltthesnoworice.Anexampleofthisareinstallationsusingpavingbricksontopofsandandconcretelayers.

TheAwaykeyprovideaneasywaytodisablethesnowmeltingsystemandsaveenergywhileawayonvacation.ToturnontheAwayKey,gototheDisplaymenu.ToactivatetheAwayscene,touch“GoingAway”onthescreen.• Pressthehomebuttontoacceptthesettingorleavethe

screenuntouchedforseveralseconds.• “SceneAway”isdisplayedonthehomescreenuntilthe

Maintainingthemeltingtemperatureduringextremelycoldtemperaturesisnotonlyexpensivebutmaybeimpossibleiftheheatlossoftheslabexceedstheinputcapacityoftheheatingplantorelectriccable.ThecontrolturnsthesnowmeltingsystemoffwhentheoutdoorairtemperaturedropsbelowtheColdWeatherCutOut(CWCO)temperatureandtheslabisbelowfreezing.Thisisasafetyandenergysavingmeasure.ThecontrolshowsCWCOonthedisplaywhenCWCOisin

effect.WhenthetemperaturereachestheCWCOsettinginanactivelymeltingsystemwithan090,meltingissuspendeduntiltheoutdoortemperaturerisesabovetheCWCOsetting.Ifan090isnotinstalled,meltingispermanentlystoppedwhenCWCOisineffect.MeltingdoesnotresumewhenthetemperaturerisesabovetheCWCOsetting.
