SLOP OILS PROCESSING

Pieralisi Group, with more than a century of experience in the separation technologies, has developed excellent

process solutions for the Slop Oils treatment. Slop Oils are all the liquid fuels or liquid lubricants that for any

reasons do not accomplish to the original composition, this mainly because contaminated by water and solids.

Pieralisi Group offers to all the companies operating in the recovery industry targeted solutions for the treatment of:

• High oil concentration - the process is focused on the separation of water and sediments

• Low oil concentration - the process provides for the surface oil recovery and the separation of sediments

• Oily sludge - the process separates big quantities of sediments

High oil concentration - Low oil concentration Oily sludge

High oil concentrations and low oil concentrations can be treated inside the disc stack vertical centrifugal separator

for the distinct separation of the two liquid phases.

The liquid phases are then extracted separately and in continuous mode.

The sediments, clearly visible at the bottom of the test tube and at the external margins of the rotor are separated

and extracted in discontinuous mode.

If the sediments percentage is too high, > 2% approximately, the starting of the treatment process will have to

include the use of a decanter centrifuge to remove in continuous the sediments contained in the emulsion down to

a value of < 2% that is suitable for vertical separators.

This step of process that utilize the decanter centrifuge is also used for Oily Sludge, once the sludge is removed

future process may be in place according customer needs.

SLOP OIL TREATMENT Pieralisi Group offers specific processes solutions to every customer needs, taking into account the various

kind of the slop oils to be treated and the required plant performances.

A complete plant for the slop oils treatment generally includes the following process phases:

Pumping section. This first part of the plant usually consists of two pumps, one in stand by. The two

volumetric pumps, are positioned near the slop oils treatment plant or near the tanks area if this isn’t situated

in proximity of the plant

Filtration section. This step of the treatment is needed to remove big solid substances that could damage

the machines downstream of the plant. The filtration level is chosen following the filtration level already

existing in the customer reception area. The adopted filter can be manual or with brushes and self cleaning

device.

Heating and recovery. For the high oil concentration slop oils, the rise of the temperature facilitates the

separation and makes possible the achievement of the performance. The temperature of the slop oi is

generally raised by the means of steam powered heat exchangers, electrical heat exchangers can be used

too. The calories (delivered to the product with the steam or electrical heater before the separation process),

after the process and before the dispatch to the stock tanks, are recovered to the incoming one which is cold,

utilizing product/product heat exchangers. This solution optimizes the energetic balance of the plant.

Thermal plant. In case the customer doesn’t have heat sources, it is possible to include a steam generator,

generally low pressure boilers can be used,. The thermal plant is complete with a water sweetener system

and a condense collector inox tank.

Sediments separation with decanter. After the big solid substances separation through the filter, the

separation of the fine sediments (<2mm) by the means of the decanter centrifuge, the outgoing separated

sediments are collected and carried out by a screw conveyor. The clarified liquid, in the two phase decanter

case, falls into a tank and from there is pumped to the disc stack separator. In the three phase decanter case

the water and the oil pre-separated fall into two different tanks to be successively treated by the disc

separators.

Disc stack vertical separator for oils. This type of machine is designed to have dewatered oils up to values

below to 2%. The waters separated by this machine may retain oily residues, which are sent to the water

separator for a following centrifugal treatment, if required.

Disc stack vertical separator for waters. This kind of machine is designed to obtain waters with no oily

residues, obtainable values are related to the oil typology and to the presence or not of stable emulsions,

according to this the value of residue oil in the water could be between 5 and 2000 ppm.

Dosing demulsifying station. To help and in same case to obtain the separation of particularly difficult slop

oils is needed a dosage of demulsifying additives, a tank and a dosing pump are in this case part of the slop

oil treatment plant. Several additive injection points are foreseen in the installation to optimize the

performance.

An electric panel that may be installed near the plant or in the operators room, controls by means of a

dedicated PLC all the process phases, a monitor installed on the front panel shows the plant dynamic status

in real time.

In addition to the possibility of composing the plant according to the customer process needs and adapting it

to the existing plant, several plants are available, ranging from 50 to 400 ton/day of slop oil to be treated. The

plants are supplied as skid unit modules ready to be installed at customer site.

concentrations of sediments. A three phase decanter is in place to bust-up the capacity of treatment system in

case of percentage variation of water content in the incoming slop oil. By means tube heat exchanger, the

incoming slop oil to be treated is pre-heated by the separated oil and water streams leaving the system.

The steam generator plant is complementary to this installation.
