Keeping Our Children Safe
The safety of children and adults remains a primary focus at Skyland both
at drop-off and dismissal times. As many of you have observed, in recent weeks
the parking lot had become a morning drop-off area for more than a few students.
As a result, some children were left to cross two parking lots and three lines of
traffic (without an adult) to enter the building. This practice was terribly unsafe,
put children in harm’s way, and simply could not continue until a child was
hurt. This problem was further compounded with an increasing number of parents
who were parking and walking their children to the front door rather than going
through the drop off line. This too became a problem as parking spaces became
more limited for faculty, staff, and guests. Additionally, parents were increasingly
complaining about what was taking place. As one parent stated, "Why should I
wait in the drop-off line with no heater on a cold morning when others are bypass-
ing the car line and dropping off in the parking lot?" As a result of the matters
stated above, it was clear that action was warranted on my part. As a result, I am
now asking all parents to abide by several basic rules and principles that I feel are
safe for children, improve the progression of the morning car line, and are fair and
equitable to all. Please see the traffic guidelines on p. 6.
In closing, safety guidelines are usually taken for granted until someone is
hurt. Let’s not wait for that to happen before we renew our commitment to fol-
low our safety procedures closely. My goal is to continue to have an accident
free school year. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in
these safety matters. Skyland students and parents are the greatest!

Presents...
January 2014
JANUARY 2014
*Music*
*Five students will represent Skyland at the South
Carolina Music Educators Association Elementary
Honor Choir in February. Students were selected
by audition. Congratulations to Ella Kate Bran-
non, Caroline Davenport, Gracie Mason, Ashley
McKinney, and Tessa Morgan.
*This year in music class our 3rd-5th grade stu-
dents are using a new, interactive music program
called "Quaver's Marvelous World of Music". Stu-dents will see several Quaver episodes as part of
our lessons on elements of Music Theory, Instru-
ments and Ensembles, Composers, Music History,
and Music Styles. Quaver's World is similar to Bill
Nye the Science Guy, Beakman, and Monty Py-
thon, all rolled into one, and students and teach-
ers love it. Mrs. Godfrey will send home a letter
with information about signing your child up for
quavermusic.com, an interactive website with ad-
ditional activities you can enjoy at home. Special
thanks to our PTA for supporting our music pro-
gram!!!
*Skyland Singers will rehearse on Thursdays only
this semester, and upcoming performances in-
clude the March 24 Shining Stars Arts Night here
at Skyland, and our Carowinds performance on
May 3.
*Mrs. Godfrey and all of the middle and high
school music staff encourage 5th graders to con-
sider signing up for chorus, band, or orchestra in
middle school. It is a great opportunity to enjoy a
community within the school and to build skill in
singing or performing instruments. The best time
to begin this journey is 6th grade. Research
shows that music can make you smarter, and we
hope you'll continue your musical journey next
year!
Art News...
The art classes are working hard on
projects that will be featured during
our Shining Stars Art Night on Monday,
March 24th. This year for Shining Stars
Art Night, Skyland Elementary has se-
lected ORIGINAL WORKS to run a very
special program at our school. Through
the Original Works program, you will
have the opportunity to purchase a va-
riety of products featuring your
child's very own artwork. These prod-
ucts will arrive back at our school in
time for Mother's Day. All profits from
this sale will be used to help support
the arts in our school. Please reserve
this night on your calendar, and come
help support the arts at Skyland. More
information to come!

Counselor’s Corner
During the month of January our students are
learning about knowledge as a core essential of good
character. We are discussing how and where
knowledge can be obtained, and how the knowledge
our students gain is preparing them for their future
career path.
Testing Reminder:
Grades 3,4, and 5 students will be participating in the
PASS Writing tests on March 18th and March
19th. All students are required to take the tests, so
we encourage all parents to avoid making out of
school appointments on these two important test
dates.

Cold and Flu Season
Flu Symptoms
The flu is different from the common
cold. People who have the flu often feel
some or all of these signs and symptoms:
•Fever (usually high)*
•Headache
•Extreme tiredness
•Dry cough
•Sore throat
•Runny or stuffy nose
•Muscle aches
•Occasionally, especially in children,
stomach symptoms such as nausea, vomit-
ing, and diarrhea (See “Stomach Flu” be-
low)
*It is important to note that not every-
one with the flu will have a fever.
Stomach Flu
The flu is primarily a respiratory dis-
ease, not a stomach or intestinal dis-
ease. Many people use the term “stomach
flu” to describe illnesses with nausea,
vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms can
be caused by many different viruses, bac-
teria or even parasites. Vomiting, diar-
rhea, and being “sick to your stomach”
can sometimes be related to the flu —
more commonly in children than adults —
these problems are rarely the main symp-
toms of influenza.
It is recommended that you stay home from
school for at least 24 hours after your
fever is gone. (Your fever should be gone
without the use of a fever-reducing medi-
cines.) You should also stay home from
travel, shopping, social events, and pub-
lic gatherings.

Grade Level News
Fifth Grade
Fifth graders participated in Skyland’s Annual Invention Convention. The following students won for the originali-ty, creativity, and overall presentation of their invention:
Honorable Mention - Kaylee Thompson (Mrs. Huff's Room) "Kayley's Kickin' Kaddie"
3rd Place - Keilah Walker (Mrs. Huff's Room) - "Safe Outlet Cover"
2nd Place - Lauren Stokes (Mrs. Morton's Room) - "The Mail Chime"
1st Place - Kaleb Boiter (Mrs. Tooley's Room) - "Observer Bird Nursery"
Students are currently participating in the Annual Skyland Elementary Science Fair. This is an exciting activity that encourages students to think like young scientists. They will conduct a science investigation that uses the scientific method to solve a problem/question. Winners will partici-pate in the District and State Science Fair.
4K Happenings
The 4K is learning about our community. The students are
busily making maps and dioramas showcasing the places in
our community. We will end the unit talking about commu-
nity helpers. Mrs. Pinckney's son, Firefighter Ian, will visit
the class and talk about fire safety. We'll even get to go
into a fire truck!
Second Grade News
Second Grade has learned facts about the continents in
Social Studies. They have learned how to label the conti-
nents on a map and find interesting places using a compass
rose. Regrouping two and three digit numbers in Math is
always a challenge, but our students met the challenge with
success. Learning about weather was a fun unit. Students
learned about the different types of precipitation, clouds,
and instruments to measure weather. They made wind socks
to learn about wind direction and speed. Our second grad-
ers are becoming good writers. Their latest topic was " How
to Build a Snowman". They were very creative. So, if we get
snow this year and you need some ideas for a great snow-
man, just ask a second grader!
Third Grade Topics
Third graders were recently, rewarded for their hard
work, in mastering their multiplication facts, with a mul-
tiplication sundae celebration. For every fact that was
mastered the student received an item towards creat-
ing an ice cream sundae. Students earned the following;
0-1 facts, bowl and spoon; 2-3 facts, a scoop of vanilla
ice cream; 4-5 facts, a scoop of chocolate ice cream; 6-
7 facts, a scoop of strawberry ice cream; 8-9 facts
sprinkles; 10-11 facts, whipped cream; 12 facts, other
fun toppings. It was a great afternoon, celebrating the
success of their hard work. Everyone left with a full
belly and a smile on their face. Way to go third graders!
First Grade Fun
First grade traveled around the world in December to learn about holiday traditions and lifestyles in 6 differ-ent countries. We have enjoyed learning how to write expository and narrative stories. We are excited about starting our unit on plants. Students will learn what plants need to survive and all about the different parts of the plant.
Kindergarten Kids!
Kindergarten friends have returned from Christmas and we
are ecstatic to say the cold didn't freeze our brains. We
have been studying polar bears, penguins and winter weath-
er. We are starting to prepare for many fun activities for
the 100th day of school! All our friends are super excited
about this fun day. Also, we have had many friends who
have started to pass their sight word list! We are looking
forward to what is coming next!
Fourth Grade
Some fourth graders went to the Battle of
Cowpens on Saturday, Jan. 18 to see the 233rd
Anniversary re-enactment of the battle. They
got to practice rifle drills with wooden muskets,
write with real quill pens, and enjoy demonstra-
tions of musket firing, cannon firing, and cavalry
maneuvers. Students also enjoyed visiting Brit-
ish and Patriot encampments and got to have
their picture taken with many re-enactors, in-
cluding students their own age.

Reading All-Stars Program
The Reading All-Stars Program, sponsored by the Greenville Drive, is available to students in 3rd– 5th grade. The Program begins on February 10th and ends on March 14th. Ticket vouchers for participating students will be awarded at the end of March. The vouchers will need to be redeemed at the Greenville
Drive ticket office. All students planning to attend the game on Tuesday, April 22nd at Fluor Field will need to be accompanied by their parent/guardian. Participating students can also
visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com/RAS to enter for a chance to be a part of the celebration game. Please look for more information from your classroom teacher at the beginning of February!
Traffic Guidelines (continued from p.1)…
For morning drop off:
Students may be dropped off at school beginning at 7:15. Please do not drop children off prior to this time.
The crosswalk painted in front of the school must be honored. Please do not stop on the crosswalk.
Please go through the car line and wait for a safety patrol to open the door for your child(ren) to exit the vehicle.
If you have business inside the school and you would like to take care of it during drop off, please go through the car line,
drop off your children in the car line, and then park and come inside to take care of your business.
Please do not drive through the parking lot to let your child(ren) out to cross traffic to the building.
Please do not park in the parking lot and walk your children to the front door. If you have a unique circumstance that you
feel warrants the need for you to park and walk your child inside, you should consult with the assistant principal or principal
for prior approval.
Please honor all signs posted on school grounds (no entry signs, no drop off, no cell phones, no tobacco products, etc.)
Please be patient.
For afternoon dismissal time:
Please display your child’s number on your rear view mirror. If you are at the far front or back of the line, it is reasonab le to
stand on the sidewalk so your child(ren) can see you.
Always keep your car motionless until the safety officer or designee at the front of the car line signals for you to move. (It is
sometimes hard to see the little ones in between the cars and we must allow the teachers on duty adequate time to ensure
that all students have been loaded).
If you forget your number, you must park and come inside to pick up your child. Be prepared to present your driver’s license
as proof of your identity.
Please arrive before 3:00 p.m. If you have an emergency and are running late, please inform us as soon as possible.
