were up to 50 years. There were 20 to 25 percent of the trainees in both the training groups illiterate and the rest were literate. The project staff already communicated very clearly to the community about various related aspects of the training such as the specification of the trainees i.e. semi skilled with some know-how about the masonry and plumbing. It was also made very clear by the project staff that project will not provide toolkits to the trainees and that the trainees should only feel motivated and interested to learn the skills during the training. The clear message from the project staff enabled them to select only the interested and relevant trainees for the training.

Training venue: The training venue Government Higher Secondary School Khwazakhela was arranged and coordinated by Falahi Taraqiati Council (FTC) - a local CBO. The school was closed on account of winter holidays and is being opening on 1st March 2012, that’s why it was made available for the training. It was a very suitable venue in terms of secure premises, lecture rooms, open area for practicing training skills and facilities such as electricity and water, etc. The school classrooms were turned into training venue. The seating arrangements were made in “U” shape and back drop banners and relevant charts were affixed, white boards stands with flip charts and toolkits were placed in two separate rooms for plumbing and masonry.

The TOT Management: The masonry trainings were conducted through Civil Engineers and plumbing training was carried out through a technical diploma holder, educated and experienced master trainer. The trainers are already providing their professional services to other organizations/individuals and have a rich experience of practical work in the field. It was tried through out the training to minimize the communication gap between the trainers and the trainees. All the relevant Pashto terminologies, where possible, were utilized. The ADF management (comprised of Program Manager/Consultant, Director Projects and Project Assistant) was present during the training to steer the training as per its standards of quality services. The management had discussion with Trainers before, during and after each session so that each trainee understand the concept and practically do himself for hands on experience. As ADF has a very clear and good understanding on teaching methodology and professionalism, that’s why it was easy to achieve objectives of the training effectively.

Training Materials: ADF made a contribution in terms of training modules for masonry and plumbing. ADF has already developed the following training modules which have been utilized and found helpful during skills development projects: As the skills training assignment was only focusing two trades in relevance to the WASH project, that’s why masonry and plumbing were used as standard modules for training by the trainers. The booklets are published in Urdu language and provide all the necessary and fundamental know how about the trades. ADF made available 3 toolkits for each training group. Three (3) sub-groups of at least 4 and max 5 trainees were formed in each training group. In this way each trainee had ample chance to utilize the tools and practice the skills. All the required training consumables were purchased from the local market and were being used in practicing various skills such as GI and PPRC/PVC pipe cutting, fitting, measurement, installation of WC, names and use of each plumbing item. Similarly, brick, stone, block masonry, leveling, quantity ratio for different parts of building, measurement of rectangle, steps, plaster, foundation, plinth, DPC, etc.

The TOT methodology & schedule: There were two simultaneous trainings carried out for masonry and plumbing with the help of two qualified trainers. According to the deliverables of the training assignment the following is the specific detail:

5-days of training for 45 participants on masonry in 3 trainings 4-days on plumbing for the rest of 45 participants in 3 trainings

Each training group was initially planned to be comprising of 15 participants and training will be for 5 and 4 days for masonry and plumbing respectively with 5 hours daily classes. However, adjustments were made where possible on the number trainees in each class and daily class duration. In some cases there were up to 17 and some time less than 15 trainees participated in the trainings. Due to background, education, understanding and interest of the trainees the theory was reduced to only 5% for each group of training. The trainers followed strict training timings from 9 am to 4 pm were observed and some times started training at 10 am under unavoidable circumstances due to late arrival of the trainees by virtue of heavy snowfall. The trainings were carried out on the following schedule at Khawazakhela, Swat: Training Masonry Plumbing

1st Training Group 14th Feb – 17th Feb 2012 (4 days)

13th Feb – 16th Feb 2012 (4 days)

2nd Training Group 18th Feb – 22nd Feb 2012 (5 days)

17th Feb – 20th Feb 2012 (4 days)

3rd Training Group 23rd Feb – 27th Feb 2012 (5 days)

21st Feb – 24th Feb 2012 (4 days)

Only 1st training of masonry was confined to 4 days instead of 5 days as the masonry trainees could not come on the first day of the training due to heavy snowfall in the target villages.

Analysis of Plumbing Training: The below graphs show analysis of pre and post tests carried out at the initial and final stage of the training. The marks of the trainees were divided into three bands i.e. Average (20 – 50% marks), Good (50/55 – 70% marks) and Very Good (above 70% marks). According to the bar charts below during the pre test the trainees were not aware about various terminologies, tools, measurements and techniques that’s why a huge percentage of trainees were falling in average band and less in good and very good bands. Whereas the post test results show marked improvement and satisfying percentage of trainees were able to stand a place in good and very good bands. The trend line graph reveals an overall situation of the progress made in terms of knowledge of the trainees. The improvement of the trainees was recorded from average band to good and very good band. It has confirmed by the trainers that a month long practice would enable the trainees to carry out any relevant job skillfully. It was highly recommended that toolkits may be provided to these trainees or they may be engaged in to any plumbing assignment so that get in touch instantly with this trade and practice whatever they have learnt during the training. Similarly, in the 2nd training all the trainees who were either average or good have become very good in terms of knowledge about the trade.

Teaching Methodology: As mentioned earlier that due to short duration of the training and level of the trainees, it was decided to reduce the theoretical part of the trainings further to only 5%. The trainings mainly become practical which was appreciated by the trainees as well. The training schedules for plumbing and masonry are annexed with the report and the teaching methodology for each training session has been described in detail as below:

Plumbing Training:

The session started with recitation from the Holy Quran. It was followed by the introduction session which was meant for sharing information regarding the donor, implementing partners, the WASH project, the skills training, trainers and trainees.

Objective and rules for the training were set together with the trainees so that every body knows what to achieve and what to keep in mind in order to make the training successful. The objective included improved knowledge and skills in the trade so that to secure a decent livelihood. Whereas the rules included mutual respect, punctuality, silence and turning cell phone off, questioning, avoid damaging assets of the venue and training, etc.

Safety and precautions of oneself and others while working

Names of the tools, functions, use and availability. The most important thing is the bubble level which is excessively used.

Measurement was a cross cutting topic of almost each practical session and was only covered initially to enable the trainees to identify centimeter, millimeter, inch, foot, meter, etc. on Inch Tape.

Cutting and Fitting of GI: The topic covered the following: o identification of GI material and its structure o Measurement and cutting (nipple, elbow, T, Union, bridge band, pipe, reducer,

ball valve, ball coke, etc.) o Identification and types of GI pipes (EL- only used for gas connections and it

has weak gauge, IL – only for cool water, M – for hot water and has thick gauge

Cutting and Fitting of PPRC: The topic covered are the following:

o identification of different PPRC material and its structure

o Measurement and cutting (nipple, elbow, T, Union, bridge band, pipe, reducer, ball valve, ball coke, socket, etc.)

o Identification and types of PPRC pipes (PN 10 – cool water, PN 20 – hot water, Yellow - only used for gas connections

PVC cutting and fitting: o Sizes, structure and uses of PVC

WASH Assistance for Flood and Conflict Affected People in Pakistan Page 14 of 17 Khwazakhela, District Swat, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa

o Cutting and joining with other PVC pipe, P-turf, etc. o PVC pipes are buried under the ground or in concrete. To bury in concrete it is

recommended to first cover it with a cotton cloth so that concrete holds it firm and adhesive power becomes high

Installation of WC: o Types of commode, types of p-turf o First install P-Turf below the ground,

central distance of p-turf from back wall is 9”, and 12” from side wall

o Elbow for English commode, side wall distance 15”, back wall distance 2” to 4”

o P-turf is fixed under the ground level with concrete

o WC is then leveled with the help of bubble level on p-turf above the ground to 4” to 6”

Main hole: o Its of various sizes, 2’X2’, 9”X9”, 12”X12”, 15”X15” o It is adjacent to the toilet exterior wall and is covered with a removable cover o It has a gas pipe of 7 to 8 feet o It has in pipe from commode and out

pipe to the safety tank Measurement inside Washroom:

o Survey of the house for its design, water connections, levels, sewerage system, etc.

o Marking points such as wash basin or hand washing facility, hot and cool water, open wall or mixture shower, commode, etc.

o Distance between hot and cool water in shower is 6”, hot connect at left and cool at right

o Mixture shower height from ground level is 30” and shower above mixture is 4’. The whole set of shower has elbow, bridge band, band, nipple, union

o Mixture is installed in wash basin first and then the basin is firmed with a wall with bolt-kits and distance between hot and cool water T-cokes is 12”. Drill machine is used here and then inserted rawal plugs. Then use bubble level on the basin and then tight the screws.

Water Tank: o It has a machine pipe raising water

into tank, overflow pipe, water channel pipe and a valve for cleaning the tank.

o Water channel pipe is connected with a T which has one air pipe above then tank level and one pipe descends to carry water.

o Ball coke is only used in the tank if water is coming from some external source like tube well, or water supply scheme. Ball valve is used to switch on and off from water tank.

Safety and precautions of oneself and others while working

Names of the tools, functions, use and availability

Different parts of building in conventional and latest construction

Identification of quality bricks, stones/concrete and cement

Measurement was a separate and lengthy topic which was carried out theoretically and practically to make the trainees understand it efficient utilization. Use of pendulum and threat for laying a course of brick was practiced.

1inch=8sutar=2.54cm=25.4mm

1cm=10mm and 1feet=12inches

1yard = 3feet and 1m=3.28 feet =

39.36 inches =100cm=1000mm

Size of brick, different walls, foundations were discussed

Making an exact rectangle for a room with 3’X4’X5’ or 6’X8’X10’ formula. The practice was carried out while chalking on the ground, single bond 4” brick masonry, stone masonry, block masonry, English bond 9” masonry. We constructed half brick walls and full brick walls. We used stretcher bond in half brick walls and used English bond in full brick walls. Every member a group made two coarse. Half brick wall width=4.5 inches, Full brick wall width=9inches

Quantity specification for preparing different mortars was also part of different activities such as 1:4 (1 is cement and 4 is sand) for heavy construction, for non-heavy 1:6 and small wall with no weight on it 1:8. Mortar for foundation is 1:4:8 (one part cement, 4 sand and 8 crushed stone). Wall plaster mortar is made of 1 part cement and 3 or 4 parts sand

Foundation, plinth, lintel beam and DPC: It is that part building which below from ground surface and transfer all load building into soil. Minimum foundation depth=2’. Trainees were facilitated to calculate accurate rectangle, and lay foundation up to a DPC.

Plinth is The part of from ground surface to DPC or floor level. Plinth minimum height=1.5’ Stone masonry was carried out for foundation, and English bond wall was erect on the DPC.

Stakeholder Perspective: Alfalah Development Foundation (ADF): The management of Alfalah Development Foundation (ADF) is very much satisfied with effort made by the trainers in terms of following the masonry and plumbing course outlines. Every session taught by the trainer was planned according to the level of the trainees. The trainers carried out every training session in a practical way in order to effectively utilize the limited days of training available. The Trainers: According to both the trainers of masonry and plumbing, the trainees are capable and confident of carrying out routine work. However, at least a month practice with some contractor will refine their skills even more. As for as concepts of the trainees are very clear and they sufficiently know about the basics of the trade. The pre and post test analysis discussed in detail and found out that 90% of plumbing trainees and 70% of the masonry trainees can work independently. The Trainees: The trainees shared during the certificate distribution ceremony that they have not seen such a practical and effective training conducted by any NGO. The management was very strict about punctuality, discipline and results. There were a majority of the trainees who already had some earlier experience of the trade, shared that they have not learnt the trade in 3 years but just in 5 days. SDO: The staff of SDO which is the local partner for the WASH project with HOPE’87 has appreciated the training quality, its effectiveness and efficiency. The SDO staff observed various skills demonstrated by the trainees and reposed full confidence on the expertise of the trainers and the management. FTC: Falahi Taraqiati Council (FTC) – a small local CBO included in the project for their local presence in Khawazakhela and for enhancing their capacity. FTC staff arranged the training venue, food and tea during the training. The representative of the FTC also appreciated the outstanding performance made by the trainees during the training and proclaimed with satisfaction that these trainees have been capacitated enough with basic and essential knowledge.
