General Announcements

Weekly offerings At this time, we encourage you to mail in your pledges and offerings to the church. Jim Cobb, our treasurer, is researching online giving options and will inform us how to proceed. We are grateful that you continue to support the church’s operations during this time of crisis.

Adult Formation Program: John, The Fourth Gospel St. Thomas is offering a four-week adult formation/education program; third session is Wednesday evening, May 20th, starting at 7:30, via Zoom.

JOHN, THE FOURTH GOSPEL If you open your Bible to the beginning of the New Testament, you will find The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark and Luke. Then you will find the fourth gospel according to John.

Matthew Mark and Luke are called the “Synoptic Gospels,” The word “synoptic,” rooted in Greek, means “presenting or taking the same or common view.” These three gospels share a number of the same stories, vocabulary and style.

Then there is that other gospel, John. The style is radically different. It begins not with Jesus’ birth or baptism, but with a beautiful, cosmic poem. The gospel contains a large number of events and teachings of Jesus that are unique to this gospel, and events that are common with the Synoptic gospels but which are told in a different way.

So, why and how is John so very different than the other three gospels? And how is it similar? What do we learn about Jesus as encountered in John’s gospel, that we wouldn’t know from reading the Synoptics?

There are other questions, just as intriguing: When, where and by whom was the Fourth Gospel composed? The way John’s Gospel is used in the liturgy is different from the Synoptics. Why is that so, and what do the answers tell us about the early church? How did the words of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel, particularly in the Last Supper discourse, shape how the church describes and addresses God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

Bring your own questions about John’s Gospel. Bring your bible to the Zoom session.

Join us Wednesday evening, May 20th, at 7:30 for the third of four weekly sessions: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84709458542 Dial-in +1 669 900 9128 meeting ID# 84709458542

Ascension Day Service, Thursday May 21 at 6:30pm The Ascension signals the end of Christ's incarnation. But rather than leaving us orphaned, Christ's ascension makes him available to all. He rises even higher so that all may gaze upon him with the inward eye. And he will send another Advocate to be our companion, the Holy Spirit. We are even more cared for, but cared for differently.

Come celebrate this feast at St. Thomas on Zoom. We will celebrate a virtual eucharist. That means, each person who wishes to receive communion will bring bread and wine from their own pantry, and we will ask God to consecrate it together. Please bring only grape wine or grape juice, not other kinds of fruit, please. Regular bread or gluten-free bread is okay. Please bring only what you will consume. This is not a regular meal, but a sacramental meal, and all that is blessed must either be consumed or distributed on the good earth for God's creatures to partake.

In addition, we will have a blessing for regular dinner food. Please consider food you wish to distribute to the poor as well. It will give intentionality to your gift and joy in your eating.

For those who wonder, Bishop Lucinda has approved of my plan. In Episcopal polity, the diocesan bishop is in charge of doctrine, discipline, and worship in her diocese. I am grateful that Bishop Lucinda has helped me think through this communion process. My hope is that through this sacramental meal, those who participate will encounter the ascended Jesus.

Financial Sustainability Committee by Keri Williams

Like everyone else in the world, members of the Financial Sustainability committee have been trying to figure out the best ways to continue with our work during our shelter-in-place. Any plans for in-person site visits were immediately scrapped, and our March meeting which was to include a shared meal, cancelled.

We quickly decided to turn our March meeting into a Zoom meeting and used the good old phone and email for the rest. And we have managed to make

some good progress gathering information.

In the next few weeks, we will be publishing articles to share the information we have gathered, starting with meetings we had with a couple of organizations that help faith-based organizations utilize their campuses to create sustainable income sources.

The first organization we contacted was InSite EFS. We met with Dan Morrar, who is co-owner of the company. Dan started InSite about 10 years ago and has put together 35-40 partnerships with various non-profit entities, including faith-based organizations.

Dan advised us that the first step in deciding how best to leverage our property as an income source was to decide how much space we need for our own use as a church. This will in turn tell us how much space we have available for use by a developer.

Next, Dan pointed out that St. Thomas property is zoned “PF,” or Public Facility, by the city of Sunnyvale. Dan explained that this zoning would likely mean that we will get push-back from not only the city, but also by the neighborhood on high-density or even modest-density housing. However, he said that schools fit into the PF zoning code as a “complementary use” of the land, and added that churches and schools go very well together.

Dan then offered to help facilitate a meeting with city of Sunnyvale city planners to find out what projects the city would support, given our zoning.

Although InSite has not worked with the Episcopal Church before, InSite has done many projects with churches. Dan is very knowledgeable about his business and at this point, he is helping us with some of our preliminary work free of charge.

Next, we spoke with Lauren Jennings and Landis Graden at an organization named “DCG.” We don’t know what the initials stand for, and…we forgot to ask.

DCG has been around for quite a while and is a bigger outfit than InSite. DCG has worked a lot with the Episcopal church, including a fairly in-depth partnership with the Diocese of California, which formed an interfaith counsel to tackle the housing crisis in the Bay Area. DCG was engaged by Bishop Marc Andrus and then Mayor Ed Lee’s office to be the real estate advisor for the interfaith counsel.

Landis and Lauren explained that DCG works as an advisor: they give options, resources and plans to make sure there are no surprises.

Page 7: Sixth Sunday of EASTER - StThomas-Svale · 2020-05-17 · 1 Sixth Sunday of EASTER May 17, 2020 Morning Prayer Rite II, 10:30am St. Thomas Episcopal Church 231 Sunset Ave. Sunnyvale,

We decided to not share what we had learned from InSite, because we wanted a new and completely uninfluenced opinion about the possibilities for our campus.

Lauren and Landis didn’t beat around the bush. Landis said “your location SCREAMS school!” It was interesting to hear two independent voices tell us the same thing. Landis advised that a daycare center would also be a good use for our property.

Like Dan, Landis told us to figure out how much space we needed for our own use, and then to engage an organization like DCG to market the remaining land to developers. He advised us to let the school come to us and build the facility. He added, that once a school builds a facility on the location, it will likely stay on the property. Even if the school does not stay on the property, the church would inherit the facility.

As for affordable housing, Landis said that a housing investor would want to build at least 50 units of affordable housing in order to make the project worth the investor’s time and money. Given St. Thomas’ zoning, this may be an uphill battle, but Landis said that DCG could do a market study for feasibility. Such studies will likely cost St. Thomas money, but we didn’t talk about money at this first meeting.

Landis gave us one of the more interesting pieces of information regarding affordable housing: He said that in general, affordable housing doesn’t benefit churches economically. While it benefits the community tremendously, he said he knew of at least one church that has ended up subsidizing the affordable housing on its campus. He said that if we can afford to build affordable housing purely as a mission calling, then it’s a great idea, but to not count on it to provide a meaningful income stream.

Next week, we’ll be reporting on our meeting with City of Sunnyvale City Planners and what we learned from them—so stay tuned!

Zooming in Men’s Spiritual Growth Group Yes! Now you can be there in your pajamas (at least), and therefore sleep a bit longer. But on the other hand we can no longer advertise coffee + if you arrive a bit early. We are now meeting weekly with a standard format, alternating between wondering what the scriptures might be leading us to personally on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays (9-10 AM on your computer), and on the other Saturdays, a check-in and just for sanity’s sake (starting at 9 AM). Our Zoom meetings are password protected so you’ll need to connect with Chris Schmidt ([email protected]) if you are new to the group. We invite all men (even those not a part of St. Thomas) to join with us for fellowship and good discussion.

Craft Group is on hiatus, with the next meeting TBD.

Book Club usually meets once a month from 7 to 8 p.m. in the St. Thomas Library. We are an open book club: All are welcome, whether you have read the book or not. On Tuesday May 26, using Zoom conferencing, we will meet to discuss The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung. In her quest to conquer the greatest unsolved mathematical problem of her time, Katherine turns to a theorem with a mysterious history that holds both the lock and key to her own identity, and to secrets long buried during World War II in Germany. Finding kinship in the stories of the women who came before her, the language of numbers connecting them across generations, this is a sweeping tale about legacy, identity, and the beautiful ways the mind can make us free.

Please join us – contact Dorothy Furgerson for the Zoom ID [email protected]

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Officiant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Jubilate Psalm 100

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.

Know this: The Lord himself is God; * he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; * give thanks to him and call upon his Name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; * and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Psalm 66:7-18

The Psalm will be chanted by a cantor; the congregation may join in on the refrain:

Bless our God, you peoples; make the voice of his praise to be heard;

Who holds our souls in life, and will not allow our feet to slip.

For you, O God, have proved us; you have tried us just as silver is tried.

You brought us into the snare; you laid heavy burdens upon our backs.

You let enemies ride over our heads; we went through fire and water; but you brought us out into a place of refreshment.

I

will enter your house with burnt-offerings and will pay you my vows, which I promised with my lips and spoke with my mouth when I was in trouble.

I will offer you sacrifices of fat beasts with the smoke of rams; I will give you oxen and goats.

Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he has done for me.

I called out to him with my mouth, and his praise was on my tongue.

If I had found evil in my heart, the Lord would not have heard me;

But in truth God has heard me; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, nor withheld his love from me. Refrain (as above)

The Lessons

First Lesson Acts 17:22-31

Lector: A reading from the book of Acts.

Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For ‘In

him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we too are his offspring.’ Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

Canticle 16 The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus

Luke 1: 68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins.

Page 14: Sixth Sunday of EASTER - StThomas-Svale · 2020-05-17 · 1 Sixth Sunday of EASTER May 17, 2020 Morning Prayer Rite II, 10:30am St. Thomas Episcopal Church 231 Sunset Ave. Sunnyvale,

In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Epistle 1 Peter 3:13-22

Lector: A reading from the first letter to Peter.

Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

Canticle 20 Glory to God Gloria in excelsis

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Gospel John 14:15-21

Gospeller: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John

Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. ”I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”

The Sermon

The Apostles Creed Enriching Our Worship

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayers

Leader: For all who rest in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed…

please add your prayers

Lord, give us peace. People: Lord, graciously give us your peace.

Leader: Remembering Mary Magdalene, first witness of the resurrection, Thomas, who gained for us the beatitude of belief, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. People: To you, O Lord.

Leader: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, for you give us eternal peace through Jesus Christ: Hear our prayers which we offer in the hope of glory, and breathe upon us with your Holy Spirit. Glory to you for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collects

Collect for the Sixth Sunday of Easter

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.. Amen.

A Collect for Sundays

O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving

All: Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

All: Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant: Let us bless the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Officiant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
