WORKS EXTRACT ARCHITECT AT BAIETTO BATTIATO BIANCO OFFICE

_2012

The Office has been operating for several years in the field of architecture and research, and one of the three founding members is a Professor in planning and architectural design at the Politecnico di Torino. The Office covers different fields, including the recovery of industrial and urban infrastructure, installations, hotel and residences. During my stay I worked in various projects. The most important impact on the press and public opinion has been the recovery and restoration of

Page 9: Silvia Bruno_Resume and Portfolio EN

Palazzo Gualino, jewel of rationalist architecture in Turin, in disuse for several years. I took care of the internal layout and garage, make-up and preparation of the graphic display boards, graphic design and arrangement of retail space and hospitality customers and for the inauguration of sales. The Office is also responsible for carrying out public tenders and private projects.

L.I.BO LIVING IN BORNEO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

_2013

The competition proposes the design of a portion of one of the two peninsulas that compose the masterplan Borneo-Sporenburg. Participants must define a single-family residential building, in continuity with the existing buildings, which shows the relationship between the built and the natural element. The new waterfont must therefore be composed of the new house and public functions serving the whole neighborhood. Green materials and green technologies are required. The lot in question is at end-position and due to its strategic location can enjoy one more overlooking. So the typical typology of the Row Houses is changed taking advantage by the long side. Moreover, is proposed the use of the technology “Sun is More”, a new solar thermal system. It is a particular panel that through the exchange of state of the liquid inside, the glass becomes opaque producing hot water for sanitary use and for floor heating. Becoming opal also ensures control of solar radiation inside the residence.

ESSENTIAL LIVING IN THE ALPSINTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

_2012

The competition has as its object the design of a mountain bivouac with particular attention to the psychological-perceptual dimension, the energy and consistency of the materials, and the adequacy of the techniques used. For those who spend time in high mountain peaks, the unguarded locals are valuable as a shelter, accommodation and for first aid (in many of those, basic equipment is indeed available). The personal spaces must no longer respond to the usual standards but at a “existence minimum”, and this is why the beds are arranged so as to exploit the entire small space available; this centralized and compact arrangement means that the heat does not dissipate outside. It also recalls the archaic figures of the hearth in the center of the house. The small size and simple design are both a requirement for energy savings, and are recognizable in the alpine landscape.

The creation of a sitting area allows you to use the bivouac as a resting area, while enjoying the landscape; the result could lead to a later implementation of similar lightweight structures within a broader territorial project, providing different points of interest along the way.The perimeter walls and the cover are made up of sandwich wood strips placed side by side, of variable height, and coupled together with dry vertical joints. This system allows fast mounting and proper insulation of the structure, the technical data sheets of the material show the transmittance values (U16 cm = 0.193 W / m² K) and the heat capacity of 2,100 J / kgK. The technology of the floor is similar, it is elevated from the ground and rests on a wooden grid that keeps it ventilated and isolated, and distributes the load on the pillars that connect to the foundation. Part of the cover and the side wall consists of photovoltaic solar panels integrated for a total of 4.54 square meters. The parts of the structure may be transported by road and are low weight for air transport by helicopter.

Page 13: Silvia Bruno_Resume and Portfolio EN

They are also designed to make subsequent assembly and operations in the site more agile and light. The modularity and ease of installation can help increase the volume depending on the needs. Starting from a modular conception of the plan, finally, a bathroom module and a kitchen module can be further developed, in addition to the main module containing the cots, to be attached depending on the needs. It is deemed preferable to have the toilet area connected, but separate from the main area.

The composition develops with a volume of about 40 cubic meters gross. In the inside, the cots are placed against the walls; those placed in the lower part also serve as seating element for living space: not only as a dormitory place but as a room of shelter and conviviality, and a pull-out table can be used as support for meals. There are openings to highlight the ongoing relationship with the outside world that allow observing the surrounding area. The bivouac is also interpreted as a space in which to contemplate the surrounding area, so it is inspired by the pavilion designed for the Park of

the battle of Varus, in Kalkriese, Germany, where circular openings consisting of lenses, helping the viewer to observe the surroundings, are used.Another element of correlation with the environment is the rainwater collection device. The water is captured through the gutter and then connected to the device, placed within the bathroom, that allows the use and purification of water through the process of reverse osmosis (during the winter, to prevent freezing water from damaging the system, there would be a heating tank alimented photovoltaically). Another aspect of innovation is the use of a warming paint (carbo paint). The carbon paint is electrically heated with low voltage (12 V, such as solar energy), it finds good applications in wet areas and mobile homes, can be easily applied either manually or mechanically, distributes heat uniformly, dries quickly and prevents mold. Our proposal stems from the awareness that living the mountain areas confronts with problems of space economy and resource management, different from the urban ones.

The aim of the competition is the redevelopment of the riverside park of Dora through the active participation of young people and the sustainable management of peri-urban areas. In particular, the aim is to raise awareness among the citizens about local cultural heritage, waste reduction, biodiversity and sustainable mobility. We propose an event aimed at re-appropriation and rediscovery of the river: an environmental treasure hunt. This is an opportunity to connect with the most unusual and hidden river: an interactive itinerary in which the teaching and entertainment abound. We will identify a place, “home base”, from which the game departs and to which reference will be made during the event. It will be placed in a removable pavilion: lightweight, economical and simple to perform, but with a strong identity and relevance to the local landscape. For this event that will last two days three places

along the river will be chosen, one for playing and one for the ceremony, that will be a time of socialization addressed to the entire population with a collective musical picnic. The event will be advertised in schools and neighboring towns, through posters and flyers; a blog will also be started and a Facebook event will be posted, to keep the participants in contact during and after the end of the game. The targets it refers to are basically young people, especially young people from middle to high schools, so the event will take place after school has ended, between June and July, at weekends for 3 weeks. Each group of participants will receive a kit called “ELDORADO” (a canvas bag with gadgets that are functional for the activities of the game). The surprise prize will consist of medicinal plants and local products. The entertainment aspect of the event and the presence of a prize with a final party are an incentive to participate in this initiative: one hundred people a day are expected to be involved; they will be divided into teams of 3-5 players, but participation may be even wider, especially on the second day, which would be an opportunity for friendly aggregation. Hunting for clues, revisiting traditions and

questioning passers-by, you will have direct experience of Dora, its resources, critical issues and its potential. This will therefore also be an alternative way to educate the younger generation to the enhancement and protection of the environment. This knowledge will be driven by inputs (the kit, the rules of the game, missions entrusted to players, etc...), but the results will be unexpected and spontaneous. Not only the river and its habitat will give something to people, but they return their impressions, which will remain in the form of tracks on the territory (land art, signs, paths, etc..) and in part will be shown during the final event in the pavilion “home base” that will serve as a symbol and display of what is done (photos, drawings, writings, objects or products collected in the territory). The memory of a different experience and fun and the canvas bag that contains the kit will remain to the participants. The blog will also remain active, as a means of communicating the results of this experiment and keeping the memory alive for future editions. A distinctive feature of this project is its simple repeatability in similar areas, thus giving the event a supra-local valence.

RETURN TO AN ABANDONED VILLAGE: STRATEGIES FOR A NEW ALPINE DEVELOPMENTTHESIS OF MASTER’S DEGREE

_2010 / 2011

Prof. A. Bocco

The thesis has been developed as a in depth analysis of the work within the design team responsible for carrying out an analysis benchmark for the future restoration project of the township of Alteretto, uninhabited for decades and 900 m. above sea level, in Gravere, Susa Valley. The intrinsic features of Alteretto and possible strategies for the reuse of abandoned villages do not allow us to analyze the intervention through schematic simplifications, so the village was considered as a single organism. A limited portion was analyzed more in depth, by focusing

on the project of re-use and ruins integration. Careful investigation and survey studies of the buildings were made, raising the question of which approach was the best to consider the village as a whole, up to a pre-feasibility study that has allowed us to hypothesize a total recovery of the township.

Were addressed issues related to the selection of activities to be performed in the township and their size; the number of buildings to be used as houses for future residents; the number of properties acquirable and the actual location of the first minimum unit of intervention; the involvement of other owners in the preparation of the recovery plan; the confrontation with the municipality of Gravere for drawing a shared recovery plan; relations with the local community and the ability to create synergies, both cultural and productive, in the territory in which we will insert the new Alteretto.

August 2011, a one week workshop for the recovery of the Roccasparvera’s oven for baking bread. The workshop was divided into three weeks and attended by several students in shifts of 8/9 people.Next to an experienced builder during the first week, we carried out the following activities: site preparation (cleaning, waste removal, scaffolding), removal of the roof tiles and the lose, selection of reusable lose, removal of rotten planks and joists, cleaning of the beams

and the first coat of anti-woodworm treatment, positioning of the new wooden beams. At the end of the week the site was suspended, and to prevent damage due to rain the roof of the building site was covered with PVC sheets. Furthermore, meetings and discussions were organized with the Mayor and experts of restoration and history of mountain architecture.

TURIN EXPO: THE NEW UNIVERSITY. STUDENTS ACCOMMODATIONSTURIN (TO)

_2009 / 2010

Prof: C. Meri Cucart, M. Sassone

The Turin expo area, just adjacent to the pavilion designed by Nervi, is the subject of two projects carried out during the course: the first addresses the issue of university residences to be created in a “stick” building; the second dealing with the same theme but in varied shapes placed in the area that overlooks the river freed from existing abandoned building. The visiting professor from Valencia, Carlos Meri Cucart, has directed research towards a compositional rigor and cleaning of facades, and a modular plan that is well suited to functions hosted. In collaboration with another course, a general model was made, in which several projects were gradually added. Great importance was also given to the creation and study of structural models of buildings.

_2008 / 2009

Prof. S. Santiano

The project involves the staging of the tragedy with the creation of a scenography, direction, quadripartite scheme, actors movements and lights plan, and the construction of a scale model of the scene.

The circus is the environment chosen for the setting. The two scenic machines located on the right and on the left of the stage close the scene and are made up of objects piled and not distinguishable. They are all worn, dirty, broken and invade the scene, charging it with a sense of heaviness and oppression. Accumulation symbolizes the growth of a relentless wickedness that pervades the entire work, but it reaches its climax at the end, with the death of Macbeth. The two machines allow the actors to move on several levels. In Act I, Scene I, the witches dance around and inside them, and climb onto them. During the rest of the show, the actors use them in many ways, using the parts to build the table in the banquet scene or wearing parts as does Macbeth. The machines consist of a metal frame which gives strength and allows actors to stand on it easily. The element of interest in the left one is the stand that recalls the one used by animal trainers, and in the course of the show it becomes the throne of Macbeth. Among the various objects there is the wooden board used by the butler and the servants for setting up the table for the banquet, and various chairs. The cumulation on the right grows, however, more in height and it also is on two levels. There is a lion cage in which there are clothes that Macbeth will wear one on another, as his madness grows. And then the head of a horse from which one of the witches shows Macbeth apparitions during the scene of the second prophecy (Act IV, Scene I). Also, on the back of the stage, there is a pull rope on which Lady Macbeth walks, as if she were a acrobat, just before committing suicide, the act of extreme folly. The colors that dominate the scene are black and red. Black is the color of darkness, time

when most of the actions of the tragedy take place, it is the color of the supernatural evil forces. Red is the color of overwhelming passion and especially blood, the real protagonists of the work. So Macbeth’s dress from dark gray turns into red, to symbolize the increase of his wickedness. As for the costumes, Macbeth appears on the stage dressed in a long coat. Initially, his suit appears intact, military, a neutral color. Then Lady Macbeth, while urging him to murder the King, symbolically removes shreds from her dress and puts them on him, taking others from the lions’ cage. Almost as if she gave him his folly and corrupted his nature, still intact. So, gradually, growing its lust for power, his thirst for blood, his madness, and adding other parts, pieces, objects, Macbeth seems to be almost crushed by the weight of his same dress that takes colors from black to blood red.Lady Macbeth takes the opposite way. During the tragedy her behavior suggests doubts and perhaps repent. The obsessive rubbing of hands, as if they were still stained with blood, proves it. So since she makes Macbeth wear pieces of her dress, Lady Macbteh strips, to appear dressed only in a cloth while walking on

the suspended rope shortly before committing suicide. An evolution which is totally opposed to that of Macbeth, underlined by this dressing or undressing of the two characters. For the witches we thought about trapeze artists, dressed in ethereal clothes. The servants instead collect a jumble of characters, each of which has only one element of reference to the circus. The references are not explicit to avoid falling into self-parody and the grotesque. Everything appears torn, lyso and filthy, the circus is therefore presented here as a warning to itself, placed to the end of its life cycle, as a oroboro now tired, static and unchanging.

THE WATERFRONT OF LIGNANO SABBIADOROLIGNANO SABBIADORO (UD)

_2008 / 2009

Prof: S. Pujatti, A. Mazzotta, S. Pagliolico, D. Maritano Comoglio, A. Lacirignola

The design of the entire waterfront of Lignano Sabbiadoro took place during the workshop on site for a period of a week that ended with the creation of a masterplan. The group I belonged to was in charge of one of the more remote areas, characterized by a large private pine forest behind the beach and only a few economic attractions. The project involved the construction of different scattered spaces leading the pine trees to invade the beach and “pixelize it” while gradually reproducing the botany of the dunes that characterize the area. Another main topic of research is the concrete that has been studied in all its forms, with the creation of handmade samples up to the definition of the desired mix design. My project focused on the bathing area. Along the lines of development according to the masterplan I have arranged the showers, office information, the bar and the labyrinth / play area for children in a hierarchy of height that follows the profile of the beach. The paths are developed not only horizontally but also vertically along suspended walkways and lookout pitches above the roofs of the buildings. The concept of pipes embedded in concrete sample now finds application, becoming a lighting parapet, cable or gutter drowned in the casting.

THE CHAPEL OF THE SHROUD: THE NEW FACINGTURIN (TO)

_2008 / 2009

Prof: M. Momo, E. Tamagno, C.Aghemo, G. Pistone

Inside the Cathedral of Turin, there is the project of the new chapel of the Holy Shroud facing, the subject of restoration after the devastating fire of 1996 when the ancient glass that separated it from the rest of the church was destroyed. After a careful survey, historical analysis and study of geometry - in particular the crooked arch that dominates the facing - and repeated visits to a very impressive construction site, it was possible to design the new window that separates the chapel from the main nave and the lighting system for Guarini’s work scenographic lighting.

_2008 / 2009

Prof. G. Ventura and Arch. C. Zannini Quirini

The bachelor’s thesis project consists in a project, then presented to the Competition for the design of the access covers of Automatic Metro of Turin - Line 1 stations. The search for a symbol in the history of Turin has focused attention on the works of Pier Luigi Nervi. In particular, the study concerning the isostatic ribs which shape its structures was interesting and decisive. The idea behind the project is the suggestion of a thin transparent sheet supported by a single colored steel pole with a diameter of 60 cm. The covering is made of transparent polycarbonate, which can guarantee the maximum contribution of light inside the station. Despite this material not being cheap, its choice is due precisely to its characteristics of transparency and low maintenance requirements which allow, on the one hand, to avoid completely the use of artificial lighting during the day and on the other to minimize management costs. The steel column is ribbed in order to increase its efficacy. The beams of variable section taper along the cantilever and are inspired by the isostatic lines arising from the structural scheme chosen and made. The problem of connecting beam-column resolves by thinking of a sort of capital steel so that the interpenetration of the entities are made properly. All the couplings between the beams are made through bolted joints, while the polycarbonate sheets are fixed with glazing bead. As per the materials, with regards the portions of steel, they are studied and designed so that they can be largely constructed and assembled

Page 31: Silvia Bruno_Resume and Portfolio EN

previously in the workshop. Once the process of “prefabrication” is done, the foundation pile and the elevation created, the latter already set up in the workshop with the appropriate capital, the only thing to do is just to raise the entire cover and bolt the beam sections with those of the capital. This may be done in one night, due to the simplicity of the operations. Also the floor space of the construction site would be very small and does not constitute any hindrance to pedestrian traffic, since the position of the poles, in all stations, is located in a protected area behind the outputs, and therefore in the opposite direction to the outflow pedestrians. All materials have been selected with a view not only of the aesthetic and functional quality but also for the economy and the recyclability of the same. The steel is a material widely used in construction but in architecture it is often replaced with stainless steel, that costs three times more than traditional carpentry steel. The steel used for the cover is the latter, which, although unpleasant if left untreated, is instead able to purchase a strong character if its surface is treated with a few tricks. In the specific case of this application, the steel must be exclusively galvanized, to prevent oxidation in contact with water, and it is subsequently painted with suitable transparent products. Even the polycarbonate is a good alternative to glass, that would be more expensive and heavier.

UNIVERSITY RESIDENCES: ALDO MORO SQUARE TURIN (TO)

_2006 / 2007

Prof: A. Baietto, S. Belforte, D. Adriano, I. Lami, A. Pellegrino, D. Sabia, R. Spallone

The area of competence is Piazzale Aldo Moro, adjacent to the Palazzo Nuovo, where now stands a desolate parking lot. For the disposition of the buildings we referred to the provisions of the PRG and historical layout, that is the line of seventeenth-century barracks that stood until the ‘60s. The external is designed in such a way on a regular basis and in accordance with tradition as not to upset the precarious balance of the historic center, whilst towards the inner courtyard, which becomes a public park, the surfaces move and change color. The rooms of the residence are modular, as well as the common areas, and have been designed thinking on the brightness of the spaces, to have enough space for sleeping but also for the study, so that the facing to the courtyard were as open as possible, while repaired towards the road, and able to provide sufficient common areas, as well as individual. These considerations have led to the creation of the largest possible number of single rooms and bathrooms facing outwards. To ensure high standards of environmental comfort and energy saving, the typical traditional technology is used, the bricks. However, the insulation thickness providing excellent conditions both winter and summer was increased. To mediate the high summer sunlight exposure of the court, outside of the wooden balconies were positioned curtains mounted on movable and adjustable panels. The “tents Kebab,” as they are called, are conceived as elements of technology but also as pieces of furniture because of their bright colors. The common parts, the colored overhanging blocks, are totally different from the rest of the building. The outer walls are ventilated and Alucobon panels are used, a material with low thermal transmittance. Inside, in the majority

Page 33: Silvia Bruno_Resume and Portfolio EN

of locals, are installed radiant panels and also have been provided solar panels on the roofs of the two corner towers.

REQUALIFICATION OF ROSINE’S BLOCK TURIN (TO)

_2005 / 2006

Prof: G. Durbiano, M. Momo, G. Callegari, S. Pace, P. Bertalotti

We hypothesized the restoration and reutilization of the Talucchi’s portion of the building, and drafted a new low structure against the existing wall - freed from subsequent inappropriate interventions - that closes the block to Via Plana. Inside the new building will be hosted a small multifunctional center which allows access to the large garden to the public.

The nineteenth-century building designed by Talucchi is thought as a home for needy young pregnant women, function in line with the reasons for which the religious order and the institution itself were founded.
