Founder Claude Whitehead-Spiritual Giant In my 52 years of ministry, the spiritual growth that I have experienced can be traced to Claude Whitehead. Claude was a pastor, counselor, Spiritual Director, District Superintendent, devoted husband, father and friend. He was the person who heard about spiritual happenings and had the vision to bring them to North Alabama for his conference to enjoy. He took clergy and their spouses to Nashville for the Walk to Emmaus and for the Academy for Spiritual Forma- tion. He formed the Community of the Mantle which he described as a “dispersed monastic community.” But, long before these, he saw the need for a silent retreat and he had the wherewithal to make it happen. Founder

Claude Whitehead-Spiritual Giant

In my 52 years of ministry, the spiritual growth that I have experienced can be traced to Claude Whitehead. Claude was a pastor, counselor, Spiritual Director, District Superintendent, devoted husband, father and friend. He was the person who heard about spiritual happenings and had the vision to bring them to North Alabama for his conference to enjoy. He took clergy and their spouses to Nashville for the Walk to Emmaus and for the Academy for Spiritual Forma-tion. He formed the Community of the Mantle which he described as a “dispersed monastic community.”

But, long before these, he saw the need for a silent retreat and he had the wherewithal to make it happen. His spirit can still be felt at Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman and at Camp Suma-tanga.

2017 Retreat Schedule

Spring

Friday, May 5 -Sunday, May 7 Fall

Thursday, Sept. 7-Saturday, Sept. 9

(All retreats begin at 4:30 PM and end at 3:30 PM) Private rooms and the ability to maintain silence

are required.

Location/Facilities

Retreats have been held since 1988 at the Benedictine Sisters Conference Center at Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, AL.

Retreatants are welcome to join the monastic community for Lauds and Vespers and the

Sisters beautifully live out St. Benedict’s advice to “welcome the stranger as Christ.”

While this is a silent retreat, worship services built into the schedule allow for time in

community while maintaining an “attitude of silence” as founder, Claude Whitehead, would

say. Private rooms enable retreatants to maintain the silence of the retreat and

home-cooked meals are served, in silence, cafeteria style.

The peaceful environment and beautiful grounds provide a contemplative atmosphere

that encourages spending time alone with God.

Susie Knedlik

Rev. Susie Knedlik, graduate of Candler School of Theology and The Academy for Spiritual For-mation, is retired from the North Alabama Con-ference of the United Methodist Church. An artist, she is past Prioress of The Community of the Mantle, has attended several silent retreats, and is active at East Lake UMC in Birmingham.

“Ministry can be stressful. Taking time for yourself and your relationship with God is not always easy. Silent retreats gave me

some discipline and God used that time to strengthen my faith and make me a better

pastor.”

Deanna Shotts

A Benedictine Oblate at Sacred Heart, Deanna is a retired elementary school teacher who worships at Hamilton United Methodist in Hamilton, AL. She attended Ala-bama Emmaus Walk #60 and has served on numerous Emmaus teams. She also attended the Academy of Spiritual Formation. Since the early 1990’s, Deanna has been participating in the Silent Retreats founded by Claude White-head. “Silent retreats are where I go to ‘draw water from the well’ for spiritual refreshment and renewal. In daily life, I’m a ‘Martha.’ This

type of retreat gives me a chance to ‘choose the better part’ and be ‘Mary’ for a time in

this sacred space.”
