Special Topics in Black Church Studies: Identity and Mission

of the Black Church (Pending Area and CPC approval) (The

identity and mission of the black church has long been the

subject of discussion and debate both among scholars and

pastors. Indeed, because of the black church’s historical

role in the African American struggle for personhood and

freedom, few questions are more vociferously argued

within the community itself, even among those who do not

attend, than the meaning, message, and mission of the

black church. Our survey of twentieth century thinkers

from W.E.B. DuBois to E. Franklin Frazier will show that that

has long been the case. But with the rise of black and

womanist theologies, that issue took on especial meaning,

as both raised important new questions about the

relationship between black religion and black resistance –

piety and public witness. We will examine that debate and

others in this course and the implications therein not only

for the black church but for all who would be the true

church. ) 5792 3 Warnock, Raphael Th 2:30p-5:30p RARB 549 Black Church Studies

Special Topics in Ethics: Global Law (In recent years, the idea

of a new 'global law' has gained remarkable relevance in legal

theory. The common contemporary goal of addressing globally the

problems afflicting humanity is not just an option but a moral and

political duty with important legal implications. Global issues such

as international terrorism, arms trafficking, wars, hunger and

poverty, immigration, political and economic corruption, and

environmental challenges cannot be adequately addressed by lone

national governments or by an international community of states

in which self-interest trumps the global common good.

The course explores new ideas and normative and institutional

issues raised by the globalization of the law. Specifically, the

course will examine contemporary debates about global justice

and law through a close reading of the leading writings by John

Rawls, Harold Bermann, Benedick Kingsbury, Thomas Pogge,

Jeremy Waldron, and Neil Walker, among others. 5939

Special Topics in World Religions: The 14th Dalai Lama: His

Life, Work, and Teachings This course examines the life,

works, and teachings of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama,

who will once again visit our campus in October, 2017. The

class is organized around his “three main commitments:”

the promotion of universal values, the promotion of inter-

religious dialogue, and the preservation of “Tibetan

Buddhist culture.” In addition to introducing students to

Buddhist (and in particular Mahayana) ideas, practices, and

communities, specific topics include: the Tibetan Buddhist

reincarnation (tulku) system; the Dalai Lama’s Buddhist-

inflected political philosophy; the Tibetan nun’s re-

ordination and Geshe-ma (female Th.D.) movement; the

Dalai Lama’s perspective on the teachings of Jesus; his

promotion of the scientific study of contemplative

practices; and his “secular ethics” which are designed to

enhance compassion, tolerance, and understanding --

personally and across communities and faiths. 5533 3 Doyle, Tara T/Th 1:00-2:20p Cannon 314
