Simple Sanitation by Composting

The SiSaComp-system is part of a composting-concept. This ecological sanitation is based on the natural proces that brings back human faeces and urine to earth appearing as compost. In stead of polluting the enviremont human excreta are used to improve the structure of the agricultural area and take care for a better harvest.

A lot of solutions already excist to put this concept in practise but most of them are expensive and have a big size. The SiSaComp that was developed by RED-Shas a compact size and a telescoping way of stacking makes it suitable for utilizing it in the scope of emergency aid. By minimizing the shapes that are used to build the SiSaComps, this sanitation can be brought to the people on base of a low price and a minimum of transportationcosts.

Beside that, the SiSaComps can be part of an ecological system that can be established by NGO’s in developing countries.

The system consists of 4 components:

• Separated sumps for urine and faeces

• Carry away in closed boxes

• Composting of the excreta

• Use the compost as fertilizer

Because the SiSaComps come as a part of a concept, according to the requirements of the NGO a package can be composed. This package can bring sanitation, hygiene, compost and even labor to the population.

Such a package could excist of a box pallet filled with enough SiSaComps, spare sumps, tubes, jerrycans, tools etc.. One of these sets should be enough to provide sanitation to 500 people (according to the United Nations Sphere Handbook)

The mentioned box pallet that is used for transportation can also fulfil the function as base for a composting installation.

This installationed can be operated by local employees so the system also can contribute to employment .

They must be leaded by the NGO. Education of the NGO-members can be done by RED-S.
