All trips and events through June 2nd have been cancelled.  We are working with vendors to get reimbursed.  As funds come in we will be processing refunds to families. Please be patient with us as we work through this process.

Isolation & Procrastination

During these times of forced isolation, procrastination and depression can become a reality for some people. It is so important that we address these feelings.  Begin by forgiving yourself (your child) for past procrastination. Have a real heart to heart talk about how and why the procrastination took place. Look at the daily schedule and make adjustments.

Last and most importantly, come up with a reward system for getting tasks done. Literally reward yourself (your child)! It can be as simple as a piece of chocolate! The right kinds of chocolate, consumed regularly, can actually help keep your cardiovascular system pumping, keep your mind sharp and alert, and help your mood to feel calm and happy. Whatever it is, make sure to reward yourself (your child) for doing what you need to do every week. As simple as it sounds, this is so important to do to prevent feelings of isolation and stress from taking over. How to speak to your child regarding the uncertainty of tomorrow. This week’s social emotional learning article focuses on you…the parents. We have been providing support to our students, but parents are probably the most influential part of a child’s support system. Being a little unsure of what tomorrow will bring is very normal.  We have a collective resilience to cope with many emotions. It is this resiliency that allows you to feel overwhelmed, and yet you still do what is necessary to be there for your child.

As parents you have a dual role to play in raising self-awareness in your children, and helping them to manage their emotions, make responsible decisions and learn how to resolve conflicts in a positive way. They are looking at you, and they draw their cues from you, even when you don’t realize it. How you model your behavior is what they see, and ultimately do.

• Be a good listener.  Children will have questions.  Answer them with age appropriate responses.

• Model the behavior you seek.  Whether it is apologizing when you are wrong, or being respectful of others, children learn by what they see.

• Nurture your child’s self-esteem. When a child has a good sense of self, they are happier, more adjusted, and do better in school; yes, even remote learning. Give them responsibilities which are age appropriate and show your appreciation for a job well done.

• Respect your child’s differences. Each child has their own unique talents and abilities. Honor your child by  providing support and encouragement for the challenges they will face.

We are living in challenging times. Challenges activate our senses, our fortitude and our trust in ourselves. At times, challenges may feel like it is testing our mental, emotional and spiritual world. While challenges may feel like a defining moment, we will get through this.

School counselors are available to speak with you.  In addition to the free conference calls, you can email us as noted. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Habit 6: Synergy Challenge of the Week!

This week when you complete a task with someone else, use this  Synergy Checklist  to evaluate yourself. Are you practicing Synergy when working with others?

• Do you consider other people’s ideas? • Do you encourage your friend to share his or her ideas? • Do you listen to each other? • Do you work until you both agree on a solution? • Do you ask for help and are willing to help?

If you answered yes to all the questions, you have mastered Habit 6: Synergy!!! If not, today is a great day to change the No's to Yes!!!!

My name is Tony Nayan, and I am the Elementary Physical Education teacher here at Avant Garde Academy. I am very excited to be able to teach students the importance of physical education and the benefits of being physically active. Class is focused on development, growth, sportsmanship, and teamwork. We accomplished these through a wide range of physical activities.

Grades K-2nd learned about proper health and hygiene. We begin by teaching them how to wash their hands properly. Teaching students personal hygiene early to help them understand and apply it to their daily routine. Students will not only learn how to wash their hands, but when to wash their hands, steps to proper hand washing, and ways they can prevent germs from spreading.

Grades 3-5th learned the basics of soccer, including the rules and regulations, an official soccer ball size, and improving on their necessary kicking skills. We incorporate STEAM in our lesson by using technology as a way for students to get a visual image in their minds before performing the activity. We also implement science by describing how the human body functions and which body part will be used during the activity.

Helping our community

Lime at Dania Pointe, was a new partner with AGA this school year. By a way of thanking them, they are our featured restaurant for a virtual family spirit night. The one difference is, AGA will not be receiving a percentage back of the profits as we want to help our community in these uncertain times.

Hollywood Launches #StayStrongHollywoodFL Community Campaign featuring City's Sea Turtle Logo

Looking for a way to show your Hollywood pride and send a positive message of hope, strength and unity? The City of Hollywood has created a downloadable coloring page for residents to decorate and display in their windows. Children are encouraged, with the help of a parent or guardian, to download and print out the City’s sea turtle logo coloring page. The coloring page can then be personalized and proudly displayed in a show of community spirit during our current “safer-at-home” emergency restrictions.

The #StayStrongHollywoodFL sea turtle coloring campaign is inspired by the efforts of children in the United Kingdom who started a global window artwork initiative by hanging handmade rainbow artwork in their windows as a way to spread cheer and hope in a show of solidarity during the coronavirus pandemic. A Teddy Bear scavenger hunt is also underway across the U.S. with children playing an “I Spy” game by placing teddy bears in their windows, posting pictures to social media and tracking how many others have followed suit.

“This creative use of the City’s logo is a great way to express our strong community spirit, get the kids involved in a fun activity, and demonstrate that we are all connected and in this together,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, “It’s a little dose of cheer during this difficult time.”

In history and mythology, the sea turtle is a symbol of endurance, persistence and the continuation of life with a resilient shell ready to protect it from threatening outside influences. Help show the strength and solidarity of our Hollywood community by coloring and displaying the sea turtle logo during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once decorated and hung in the front window, residents can share their photos on the City’s Facebook page using the hashtag: #StayStrongHollywoodFL.

Take a picture of your sea turtle displayed in the window where you live and include #AGALEADS to show your support.

The Sea Turtle is attached to Shark Bites or you can click on the link in the above article.
