The funeral of Leanne Chambers is set to take place at St John’s Church on Tuesday 17th August at 12 noon. Ms Chambers disappeared at the end of February this year from the home she shared with her partner, Steve Crossland in Chester- le-Street. The sales-coordinator, who had battled with depression for several years, took a turn for the worse when she received a letter telling her she had to be assessed by a doctor to see if she was fit to return to work. Steve, 35, went to bed and left Leanne watching T.V. on the night she went missing. It is thought that she slipped out of the house sometime after midnight. After extensive police Leanne Chambers’ funeral will take place at St John’s Church on 17th August. Mourners to pay tribute to Leanne Chambers searches and investigations of possible sightings, the hopes that Leanne might be found alive and well were dashed when a body was discovered in the River Wear at Cox Green on 1st July. Results from DNA testing proved what police had suspected, that it was in fact Leanne. Her mother, Val Chambers, said that the devastat- ing news would at least allow the family the chance to move on and grieve properly for the 30 year-old, who would have celebrated her birthday on 7th June. Northumbria Police are in the process of compiling a report on behalf of the Sunderland coroner, who will organise an inquest into Leanne’s death in due course. The Crier would like to take this opportunity to send our deepest condo- lences to Leanne’s family and friends at this sad time. Assesments will take place which will involve social workers and health professionals who are all highly experienced in moving people between care providers and best practice will be followed throughout the process.“We will also be encourag-

Standing in the queue at the check-out in the Netto store in Shildon, Kevin Brown noticed that a woman had left her red purse on the counter. The 36 year-old was then caught on CCTV cameras placing his back-pack over the purse, before picking it up. The purse contained £120 and other personal effects, including a bus

pass and a top-up card. Brown, now of Byerely Road Shildon, pleaded guilty to the charge. In defence it was stated that he had shown evident and genuine remorse and was ashamed of his actions. The theft had not been pre-planned and Brown, who is employed as a slaughter-house man, said that he had not been

sleeping since. The court heard that the defendant suffers from serious alcohol problems but with the help of his sister, with whom he lives, that he his very committed to stopping drinking. Brown was given a six month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £120 compensation and £85 costs.

Harry said, “The lads come to our farm from the hostel and some choose to stay in our six small cottages whilst they are helping out around the farm”.

Now that the football season has begun local police are asking that anyone who drives to Shildon matches be con-siderate about where they park.Local residents regularly complain that they are

having their driveways blocked and the pavements around the football ground are often impassible.“The police will be monitoring the area throughout the season so please be warned”, urged a police spokesperson.

Ashley Scott Grey, aged 18 years of Market Place, Shildon, was due before Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates to face a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on a Mr Gavin Latcham in Shildon on 27th June. In another court room, Shane Bowman, aged 19 years of Kilburn Street, Shildon faced a charge of harassing the same man, in events arising out of the same incident. At around 4.30am that morning, residents of Foundry Street called the police and fi re brigade after a disturbance at a neighbouring house. Gavin Latcham was found to have an injury to the eye and a bump to the head. Admissions were made by

Drunken assault & arsonShane Bowman that along with Ashley Grey and a Mr. Wilson (who is still at large) they had gone to Latcham’s home. The three friends had been out drinking, had taken a taxi to Shildon and decided to continue their drinking at a nearby allotment. En-route they passed Latcham’s home and as they bore him grievances, they took the following actions. After banging on the door it was opened by Latcham and Grey struck him to the ground. Bowman, who had thrown a wheelie bin across the yard, then grabbed Grey and states that he saw Wilson go into an out-house and believes that it was Wilson who started the fi re. In mitigation the defence stated that Latcham had

admitted to stealing a cross-bow from Bowman’s boss as well as stealing a boiler and copper piping from Bowman’s girlfriend’s home. Bowman was said to have co-operated fully with the police and was lucky not to be involved in further more serious charges. He was now looking to address his drinking behaviour. Magistrates requested a short report from the Probation Service before sentencing. The 19 year-old was given information to refer himself voluntarily for alcohol treatment, fi ned £85 costs and a two months curfew, which will be electroni-cally monitored between the hours of 8.00pm and 6.00am was also imposed.

Lee Geoffrey Moore, formerly of Auckland Terrace, Shildon, pleaded guilty to four charges of theft at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court recently. The 29 year-old, who is well known to the courts, also pleaded guilty to being in breach of a 12 month conditional discharge, imposed in May, for shop theft. On the 12th July in Shildon Moore stole two bottles of Smirnoff Vodka, valued at £22, from the Co-op. On the 17th July, CCTV to the rear of the Health

Sentence to help curb off endingCentre, captured Moore as he cycled up to a parked vehicle and used a spark plug to smash the front passenger window before stealing a Tom-Tom sat-nav and sunglasses valued at £210. Also on the 17th July Moore stole a small amount of lead fl ashing belonging to Chisholm Bookmakers. On the 26th July he was seen taking a pedal cycle from outside of the Tesco store in Newton Aycliffe. The court heard that Moore had moved to the area with his girlfriend from Mid-

dlesbrough in an attempt to help with their heroin addictions. However, after a fall-out with his girlfriend, Moore had suffered a relapse with his drug problem and reverted to his petty thieving to fund his habit. Magistrates handed Moore a sentence of 18 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months on condition that he was under super-vision by the Probation Service. During this time he will undertake nine months medium level drugs rehabilitation.

Fraudsters claiming to be refunding council tax payments are targeting householders in County Durham.Durham County Council has received two reports in the past week of someone claiming to work for the authority contacting members of the public by telephone. The bogus caller told the target of the scam that

they were due to receive a substantial refund on their council tax payments. They then asked the person to provide their bank details so that the payment could be made. When challenged by one recipient, the caller hung up.Jeff Garfoot, Durham County Council’s head of fi nance, said, “These are obviously scam calls. Council offi cers would not

Phone scam warningring a member of the public and ask for their personal details in order to arrange a refund of money. I would, therefore, urge people to be extremely cautious if they receive a call from someone asking for personal informa-tion such as bank details.”Anyone who believes they may have been contacted by a bogus caller should report the incident to the police.

Charities and voluntary groups are being offered another chance to promote their activities in a free newsletter.Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership (GAMP) is to produce a further two editions of its community bulletin. The newsletter, which is published in partnership with CAVOS, provides members of the public with details of events, activities and volunteer-ing opportunities in their

local area.Laura Agar Wilson, from CAVOS, said, “We have had a lot of positive feedback about the two issues of the newsletter that we have already produced, with many of the groups who contributed saying the publicity helped increase interest in their work and boosted their membership numbers.“It’s a great opportunity for charities, voluntary groups and community organisations to let people know about their work and

for us to promote the work of GAMP.”The next two editions of the newsletter will be dis-tributed to all households in the area in October 2010 and March 2011.They will also be available at leisure centres and community venues. To submit an article email [email protected] Tel: 01325 327441 or write to GAMP, Pioneering Care Centre, Cobblers Hall, Carer’s Way, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 4SF.

Have your say on the busesMembers of the public are being invited to have their say on how expected reductions in Durham County Council’s public transport budget should be implemented. As part of the Govern-ment’s Comprehensive Spending Review, this autumn the authority is bracing itself for reductions in Government funding of up to 30 per cent, and the council wants the public to help decide how best to implement the impact on public transport.Head of Transport Adrian

White explained,“We are expecting sig-nifi cant reductions in local authority funding in October and, rather than announce we are cutting this or that service, we would really appreciate hearing what the people who use and operate these services think.”To have your say on how best to reduce bus services with minimum impact, take part in this consultation via the following methods:• Via email: [email protected]• By post, write to: Bus Service Consultation,

Passenger Transport, Re-generation and Economic Development, Durham County Council, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5UQ.• Via our survey on www.durham.gov.uk under ‘Have Your Say’ section. The consultation will run until September 24th, with feedback being considered and action taken following the publication of the Gov-ernment's Comprehensive Spending Review announce-ment in October. A Bishop Auckland man is to be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court after he admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he stabbed a guest at his sister’s wedding. The incident occurred on June 5th at Shildon’s Elm Road Club when Ben Hall was taken to hospital with fi ve stab wounds.Carl Hannon was originally arrested for attempted murder, however he denied this and his not guilty plea was accepted by the pros-ecution. It was discovered on CCTV that Hannon did not instigate the violence, which involved several

soldiers. The footage showed Hannon being assaulted by another man. The tape also showed Mr Hall, the victim, punching Hannon to the ground after being invited to join the fi ght by another guest.A scuffl e ensued between the two men, resulting in Hall being seriously injured. The 21 year-old was remanded in custody where he will remain until his next court appearance on September 13th for sentencing. It is possible that he will receive a lengthy jail term for the offence.

Sentencing looms for stabbing accused

Police are currently ques-tioning a man about a serious incident which occurred recently outside of the New King William pub that resulted in another

man becoming hospitalised. The same male is also believed to be responsi-ble for an attack with a machete which took place on Sunday 8th August.

Shildon Railway Under 13s visited Willington in their latest fi xture. Shildon batted fi rst and posted a respectable 83-4 with the loss of only 4 wickets which repre-sented an improvement in

Mixed fortunes for Railway C.C.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides enjoyed mixed fortunes in the weekend’s fi xtures against Crook. The 1st XI lost at home whilst the 2nd XI triumphed on the road at Crook. S h i l d o n b a t t e d fi rst at the Sportsfield and posted a score of 180 all out with only Scott Oldfi eld posing any real threat to the visitors in scoring 54. In reply Crook reached 184 for 7 with former Shildon player Brett Upton doing most of the damage, scoring 53 not out. However at Crook, Shildon

put the home side in to bat and soon had them in trouble. It’s very encourag-ing to see the youngsters to the fore in recent matches and Kieron Cook’s opening spell of 1 for 12 from six overs didn’t reward him fairly. Stephen Young, on the other hand, enjoyed

good fortune in taking 6 for 25 in an eleven over stint. Dan Richardson again proved his worth with 3 for 7 from fi ve overs, which helped dismiss the hosts for just 57. A rain-interrupted second innings saw Shildon reach 59-1, to win comfortably by nine wickets. A mature knock of 26 not out from opener Liam Horner was the highlight and when he was joined at the crease by cousin Ellis Horner, who looks a very accomplished batsman, the victory was never in doubt.Next week Etherley provide the opposition in the Readers Durham County League with the second team at home.

The long awaited opening game of the season took place on Friday evening 6th August 2010 when Shildon AFC entertained champions Spennymoor Town, but the result didn't favour the home side. The game started tenta-tively with no real chances falling to either side. The pace of the game was fast and furious, with both sides passing the ball around with speed and accuracy.

Shildon AFC - ‘We deserved more’On 40 minutes Spennymoor took the lead, when a shot from No. 9 Steven Richardson was judged to have crossed the line. Confusion followed, as the referee booked Shildon's Gary Brown for handling Richardson's shot on the line. The second half started with both teams playing the passing game, but neither one creating any clear cut chances. On 75 minutes Steven Johnson weaved his way

passed two defenders, only to be hacked down inside the box for a blatant penalty. To the amazement of everyone in the crowd, nothing was given by the referee.Immediately afterwards Danny Richmond was red carded for his second bookable offence. On 82 minutes Spen-nymoor's Craig Ruddy had a shot cleared off the line by Shildon's Gary Brown.Shildon 0 Spennymoor 1.
