SCRAPE DRAW Shildon Railway B.R. were at home to Lambton Lions in The Russell Foster under 17’s League on Sunday, March 14th, and came back from a 3 goal deficit to gain a hard- earned draw. After a poor start, the home side went behind after 15 minutes. Both Danny Shoulder and Nigel Turner missed opportunities to equalise before Shildon conceded two more sloppy goals. Kieran Corner reduced the arrears right on half-time when he tapped in the rebound after a free kick by Nigel Turner had been parried. In the 2nd half, Shildon dominated from the start and were rewarded when Kieran Corner further reduced the arrears. Chances were missed at both ends before the B.R. were awarded a penalty for a hand ball, which Joe Joyce dispatched to level the game at 3 – 3. A Nifty Fifties Taster Day will be held on Wednesday, March 24th, in the Salvation Army Hall on Cross Street, from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Activities are to include seated exercise, making marzipan figures and painting stones. There will be a cover charge of £3 to cover the cost of lunch, tea / coffee and biscuits. NIFTY FIFTIES TASTER DAY Shildon AFC visited high- flying Dunston UTS on Tuesday, March 16th, in the skilltrainingltd Northern League game and came away with an excellent 4 - 2 victory. For any neutrals in the crowd this was the game to watch, as it was end to end attacking football from the start. Dunston, who hope to be progressing next season into the Unibond League were shocked to find they were two goals down within the first 5 minutes. Shildon opened the scoring as early as the 2nd minute when Jamie Harwood raced into the penalty area and blasted an unstoppable shot past keeper Liam Connell. On 5 minutes it was 2 - 0 to the visitors when Steve Johnson burst into the box, his heavy touch was fumbled by keeper Connell, but Johnson was able to scramble the ball home from close range. A minute later Dunston's Andrew Bulford's shot rattled Shildon's crossbar. On 12 minutes, Dunston reduced the arrears. From a long throw, the ball fell to danger man Andrew Bulford who drove the ball low past keeper Keith Finch. On 21 minutes it was all square, when an overhead kick picked out Michael Dixon who fired home the equaliser. Both teams were playing all out attacking football and it was end to end stuff. Shildon restored the lead on 29 minutes when Warren Byrne was brought down inside the area for a penalty, which he coolly converted. In the closing minutes of the half Dunston replied with a close range header and a looping long range over the top shot which just missed the target, with Keith Finch stranded. Half Time: Dunston UTS 2 Shildon 3 The second half started the same as the first half with both teams going for the jugular. On the hour, The Railwaymen should have increased their lead, when Steve Johnson cruised past Dunston's Ben Cattanach and keeper Liam Connell but his shot hit the post. On 70 minutes a long throw from Phil Brumwell found Dunston's captain Michael Robson who headed over everyone into his own net to make it 4 - 2 to the visitors. Chances were still plentiful for both sides. On 73 minutes No. 11 for Dunston Lee McAndrew's cross was headed onto the bar. Then Shildon's captain, Justin Keegan scrambled the ball off the goal line. Chances fell for Sam Garvie and Steve Johnson for Shildon. Near the end, Dunston's No. 9 Chris Laws had a wonderful chance to score from only 6 yards but he headed straight into the arms of Keith Finch. Shildon AFC are away in the league at Morpeth on Saturday, March 20th. The Supporters Club are running a bus to the game. They have known each other since Mabel was 5 years-old, but they only met each other properly when Alex came home on leave from the Army. Alex left school at 14 years- old and went down the mines at Dawdon, working at the same pit as his father. In 1935, when he was 18 years-old, he joined the Army, serving for over 10 years. He returned to mining after leaving the service, working at both Middridge and Brusselton Drifts; and when the local mines closed, he moved to the coal fields in South Wales. Altogether, he spent 36 years working in the coal industry. After finally returning home from Wales, he spent the last 18 years of his working life at Eaton Axles in Newton Aycliffe. Mabel also started work at 14 years-old at The Leather Factory in St. Helens, Auckland. When she was 18, she became an Aycliffe Angel as a C.I.A. which is 'Chief Inspector of Arms.' She was there until the factory closed in 1945, when she went back to work at the Leather Factory. After marriage, the couple lived in Iley Street, near Garbutt Street, and later John Street. For the last 8 years they have resided in their current home in Association Street. The lovely couple have a son, David and two daughters, Christine and Kathleen. They have five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In their earlier days, they both loved their holidays and going walking. Mabel, nee Langham, is a member of the Nifty Fifties and also attended the local theatres with her lady friends. A Shildon man has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment after threatening a man with a meat cleaver before robbing him. Alex Ferguson, of Sunnyside Avenue, committed the crime in broad daylight in the middle of Church Street in August last year, when he approached a Ladbrokes employee, who was returning from the Post Office with bags of change. Ferguson threatened to cut the man's head off before fleeing with just £65 in change. When the 27 year-old appeared at Durham Crown Court recently, the judge heard how Ferguson has problems with heroin and alcohol and was, in fact, drunk at the time of the offence. The Court were also informed that this was not the first time the Shildon man had been convicted of robbery. Judge Christopher Prince commented as he passed sentence, saying, "This must have been a very frightening experience for that cashier. Serious aggravating features were that your inhibitions were lowered through drink, and your previous convictions." JAILED FOR MEAT CLEAVER ROBBERY Police are appealing for witnesses after a car was vandalised in Shildon on Sunday, March 14th, between 7.00am and 3.00pm. BUSY SUNDAY FOR SHILDON'S CHURCHES

Fern Lowery and Anthony Hanky with their beautiful boy, Phoenix Beau.

This year's Mother's Day was unique for several Shildon Mams, after they shared their special day with their sons.Five Christenings took place in the town last Sunday, March 14th, and all were for boys. The fi rst took place at The Methodist Church, when the handsome Phoenix Beau Lowery-Hanky was baptised by the Reverend Graham Morgan. Reverend Morgan dedicated the service to mothers and their super-hero powers to care for their families.Phoenix's mother, Fern Lowery, along with his dad, Anthony Hanky, chose six Godparents for their child; they were Natalie Evans, Stacey Gallagher, Stacey Dodd, Michael Bennett, Philip Redmond and Paul Trotter. The couple, who live on Redworth Road, celebrated the event at The Locomotive Pub with family and friends.Reverend Morgan also baptised a second little boy during the service; the beautiful Connor David Scaife, who's parents are Elizabeth Hunter and Jamie Scaife. Across the road at St John's Church, three Christenings also took place.First was the lovely Aidan Ross Dack, whos parents Ross Alan and Michelle Adine Dack, a tyre fi tter and retail assistant respectively, chose four Godparents for their little boy. Curtis Alan Roe, Gemma Wade, Ryan Threadgill and Joseph Jordinson all proudly took their vows before heading

to The Queen's Head for tea and a bun.Next to the font was Ben George Mensforth, whos parents Paul Mensforth, a farmworker, and Janette Mensforth, a housewife, chose Elm Road Club for their reception. Before the celebrations could get underway, however, Shelley and Lyndsey Mills, Ryan Mensforth, Hannah Quinn and Trevor McDanielson had to step up and gladly take their vows as

the gorgeous boy's Godparents.Last but not least, Phillip Anthony Wood, a senior proof reader, and Jayne Wood, a full-time mother, had their adorable little boy, Lewis Davison Wood, baptised at St John's.The youngster's Godparents were Paul Tennick, Sarah Walker, Adrian Clarke and Michelle Clarke.Friends and family celebrated with a reception at the Wood's home.

Lewis Wood with his parents and sisters Emily and Lily.

COMMUNITY GARDEN LAUNCH

Five-year-old Katie Thompson taking a well-earned rest in the mud!

More than 60 adults and children turned out in an overwhelming show of support for a new community garden which was launched in Shildon at the weekend.Youngsters and adults worked side-by-side in bright sunshine at the allotment at Furness pit, off Byerley Road, on Saturday, March 13th.Those who attended also enjoyed a barbeque and managed to build several raised beds which will soon be ready for planting.Helen Cole, Community development worker for the Shildon Mustard Seed Project, St John’s Church, said, “We are completely overwhelmed by the support we have been shown. Loads of people came along to offer their help and we got a lot of work done.“It was fantastic to see children of all ages working alongside adults of all abilities. The weather certainly helped and everybody seemed to have a really good time.’’The idea for the new community garden came from people who took part in the

Shildon Mustard Seed Project’s vegetable planting sessions, which were carried out in the town last year in partnership with S&D Training. The Shildon Mustard Seed Project has now joined forces with Shildon Town Council and Groundwork North East to build the new community allotment. So far Shildon Town Council has donated the land and Groundwork North East has funded the fencing and other equipment through its Creating Health in Communities project.Helen said, “I would like to say a big thankyou to Groundwork and Shildon Town Council for their support which has been invaluable. “Those who came along to Saturday’s event had so much fun that they want to come again so we will now get together on Saturday mornings to do what we can to keep the garden going."For more information about the allotment, or to register an interest, contact Helen Cole on 07761981160.

Only two days after Alex and Mabel Ellison’s anniversary, another Shildon couple were celebrating many happy years together. March 12th was Brian and Jean Yo u n g h u s b a n d ‘ s Golden Wedding Anniversary. The couple were married 50 years-ago at St. John’s Church. Brian, 68, was born in Charles Street and went to both Timothy Hackworth and the Council school. Jean, 66, nee Foster, was Brian and Jean Yunghusband with the Mayor of Shildon,

Councillor Gareth Howe.

BRIAN & JEANA GOLDEN COUPLE

born nearby at Fieldon’s Farm, Fylands, and went to St. John’s school. The couple met at The Rex picture house in New Shildon when Jean was sitting behind Brian and he asked her out. Brian began his working life as an apprentice bricklayer at Shildon Wagon Works in 1956, but he left when he was 18 to work at the Rolling Mills in Darlington. He later returned to Shildon Works as a welder when he was 23, the trade he picked up at Darlington. He stayed at the works until 1983 and then went to Tallents in Newton Aycliffe. Jean worked at Pages Clothing Factory in Shildon. She was also working at

New Shildon W.M.C. and later Dufay Paint Factory. The couple have fi ve children, Barbara, Maureen, Kevin, John and Gary. They also have eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After marriage they moved into Brown Street, then Charles Street, and later Association Street and Garbutt Close. Since November 2008 they have resided in Hackworth Close.Brian has been involved with pigeons since he was very young, starting to race them in 1952, and he has also been West Durham Federation secretary, New Shildon W.M.C. secretary and Old Shildon’s W.M.C. secretary.

He is still very active with his birds (the fl ying kind). Brian was also a Shildon town councillor and has been a governor of Timothy Hackworth Primary school for the last 10 years. Jean in the meantime said she had no real time for hobbies as she was a full-time secretary for Brian, taking all his calls, as he was never in. However, she did run the bingo in the community centre in Garbutt Close for many years. She was involved in the Ladies Darts & Dominoes league, where she was treasurer. On Sunday, March 14th, the couple held a party for family and friends at Elm Road W.M.C.

At a recent Heritage Line Community Rail Partnership Presentation, a Community Rail Partnership offi cer showed that traffi c on the railway line between Bishop Auckland and Darlington has risen over the last three years. He also informed those in attendence that the

20 year-old Class 142 Sets currently running on the line will be replaced when surplus stock becomes available. It is also expected that trains from Weardale Railway will operate into Shildon from May 29th, after trains were obtained from Scottish Rail.

RAIL USAGE ON THE RISE

A Shildon Junior Football League Registration Night is to be held on Wednesday, March 31st, at the Shildon Civic Hall from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. Registration Forms are available from the Council Offi ces in Civic Hall Square, or through any of the town's schools. "Please bring your completed form on the night along with a £3.00 registration fee," encouraged a spokesperson for the league.Coaching is available for 5 to 7 year-olds while the Football League is for 7 to 16 year-

olds. The league will start on Saturday, May 8th, at Hackworth Park in Shildon. Assembly is at 9.30am for a 10.00am start. Previous Managers not taking part this season who still have football strips, bags etc, are asked to take them along to the Registration Night."We still require a few more ‘Managers’ to help with the League. If you are interested or would like more details, please phone Elaine on 07854814546 or Tracey on 01388 772563," continued the spokesperson.
