Regional broadcaster Star Radio has put its weight behind what will be the biggest Bishop Auckland College Music and Arts Festival in its three year history. Thanks to support from Star, top acts such as The Hoosiers, Beverley Knight, The Wildcats of Kilkenny and Martin Stephenson and The Daintees will join the Mowbray professional 46-piece orchestra for an eclectic three days of en-tertainment.The festival, which until this year has been restricted to two days, has been given free on-air promotion by Star, while the radio station has also been instrumental in securing the talents of big chart acts like Beverley Knight.Star will also provide DJs to keep the festival rocking throughout the three days, from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd July, at Bishop Auckland College.
More top acts secured for Bishop Festival
Star Radio’s managing director Mark Reason said, “We are delighted to have supported this great event in the North East music calendar and hope to continue supporting it as it goes from strength to strength.
“We’re a family radio station and are passionate about the local community and local music and so the festival is an ideal fit given that it caters for people of all ages and tastes.”Kevin Burns, marketing manager from Bishop Auckland College, said, “We are extremely grateful for the invaluable support that Star has given us in promoting the event on air in the 10 weeks running up to it. This year’s festival is the biggest one yet and we hope that next year it will continue to grow, hopefully with the ongoing support of Star.”A weekend ticket for the festival is £7, with day tickets priced at £2 for Friday, £3 for Saturday and £4 for Sunday. The festival kicks off on the Friday with The Wildcats of Kilkenny and The Silence, while Saturday sees headliners The Hoosiers, Beverley Knight, Martin Stephenson and The Daintees take to the stage. The event closes on the Sunday with The Proms at the College, featuring the Mowbray professional 46 piece orchestra.
Singer Beverley Knight will headline the festival, along with The Hoosiers, Martin Stephenson and The Wildcats of Kilkenny.
The Maternity Ward at Bishop Auckland Hospital is to close its doors for two months due to a shortage of qualified midwives.Expectant mothers who have planned to give birth at the hospital next month will have little time to make new arrange-ments, as the unit will be closed from 2nd July and will not reopen until 2nd September.Parents have been told that they must now choose to have their babies at either Darlington Memorial Hospital or the University Hospital of
North Durham during this time.Representatives of Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the maternity ward, say that the closure is due to a combination of staff on long term-sickness or leaving the hospital to work elsewhere.Although new midwives are currently being recruited, they won’t be available to work until early September, and bosses feel that it would be unsafe to keep the ward open while it is un-derstaffed.
Temporary closure for maternity ward
A memorial bench has been placed at the entrance to King James I Academy in remembrance of ex-pupils Robert and Michael Winterbone, who recently passed away. Brothers Robert and Michael, who were former students of
the school, both suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. “During their time at King James I they were an inspiration to other students and took an active part in school life,” said a spokesperson for the school.

Group at the heart of the community
Councillor John Lethbridge (Centre, holding cheque) and Cllr June Lee (to his right) are pictured with some of the healthy heart group.A group at the heart of the community is thanking the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership (AAP) for a healthy donation.Bishop Healthy Heart-Beat Support Group were looking for funding to pay for an aroma therapist and tai chi instructor to support its 28 members, all of whom are heart failure sufferers and their carers. Some of the group set up
the project after attending support sessions run by the Butterwick Hospice in the town. The group meets every Tuesday at the Henknowle Community Association Centre. Councillors June Lee and John Lethbridge, who represent the Woodhouse Close ward, gave £6,750 funding through their neighbourhood budgets. Audrey Hughes, secretary of the support group, said,
“The members are thrilled to receive this generous funding from Councillors Lee and Lethbridge.“The cash needed to fund the aromatherapy and tai chi sessions would normally drain our resources. “In fact, without funding we could not include them as part of our therapy and it’s comforting to know this will be taken care of for the next two years.”An aroma therapist will
now be able to visit the group every week for two years and a tai chi instructor will give over 60 hours of tuition over that period.Aromatherapy helps to de-stress while tai chi helps with keep fit which is a crucial part of any heart condition. For further information on the group contact Audrey Hughes on 01388 815041 or email [email protected].

Detectives in Bishop Auckland are appealing for witnesses after a man was the victim of an unprovoked attack which left him in hospital for a week. The incident happened outside the Postchaise public house, in the town’s Market Place, shortly after 2am on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May.The 35-year-old victim and his female partner were innocent bystanders to a heated argument taking place outsider the pub involving a number of people. He was standing on the opposite side of the road
when one member of the group crossed over, approached him from his blind side and punched him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. An ambulance took the victim to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he was found to have suffered a fractured jaw and a fractured skull. He was then transferred to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he remained for several days before being allowed home.Police subsequently arrested a 22-year-old local man on suspicion of causing grevious bodily
harm. He is currently on police bail, pending further enquiries until mid-July.Det Sgt Mick Bird said, “This was a completely unprovoked attack on the victim, who was trying to keep away from the trouble outside the pub. We have obtained witness statements from a number of people but we are keen to trace everyone who was in the area at the time.”Anyone with information should contact Bishop Auckland CID on 0345 60 60 365 or they can call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Learning is childs play Children at Cockton Hill Infant School Playgroup have new toys to help them learn, thanks to a grant of £300 from the Bishop Auckland and Shildon area action Partnership. (AAP). The toys, bought with the funding, help children learn and develop as they play. Wendy Shaw from Cockton Hill Infant School Playgroup said, “The playgroup was very lucky to receive a grant from Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership. “It has enabled us to buy a variety of creative, imaginative and social activity based equipment. This in turn has enhanced the children's learning and
development through play. They are all having fun.”The playgroup, which is open to all young children in the community, helps to improve children’s social, emotional and physical wellbeing, as well as develop their skills. It also gives parents the chance to socialise with others. Alan Boddy, Chair of the AAP’s Task and Finish Group, said, “We are happy to support a group which provides a safe and enjoyable learning environment, open to all young children in the local community.”For more information, please contact Wendy Shaw on 01388 604627, or email [email protected].

Park given new lease of life
Cllr Sam Zair and Lesley Zair with Steven Johnson from Durham County Council in the park.An underused park in Bishop Auckland has been given a new lease of life.Bishop Auckland Town Council and Durham County Council worked together and pooled funding and resources to resurrect Tittybottle Park, making it a place residents will want to use again. The park, on Cockton Hill Road, was blighted with overgrown trees and shrubs and has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour and a decline in use from the local community.Trees and shrubs were cut back and removed, new seating installed and the hard landscaping was improved.Local residents have given work the thumbs up and by trimming the shrubs a
better watch is being made on antisocial behaviour. Newlyweds, married at the nearby registry office, are also taking advantage of having a picturesque place to have their pictures taken.Lesley Zair, Bishop Auckland Town Councillor, said, “This historic park makes a pretty addition to Bishop Auckland. It builds on our heritage and is a great asset for locals and visitors alike.”According to local Historian Barbara Laurie, the park got its name because a ‘Tittybottle’ is the old name for a baby’s bottle, curved and open at both ends, and nursemaids would gather with their prams in Tittybottle Park to feed their babies and socialise.
A man appeared before Magistrates recently, after he crashed into a police car in Bishop Auckland.Four police officers were inside the Red Double Happiness Chinese Takeaway on Newgate Street purchasing refresh-ments and had parked their vehicle outside the premises when Philip William Martin drove his Renault Clio into the back of the police car.
Martin appeared unsteady on his feet and smelt of alcohol and was found to be over the legally-prescribed limit. The 44 year-old did not believe that he was over the limit and that, he says, is why he had driven and had attempted to park behind the police vehicle. The court heard that Martin had only received his driving licence back in March this year having lost it for a
similar offence. Martin, who until eighteen months ago had been in regular employment, works as a plasterer on a casual basis and had moved back in with his parents in Church Street, Coundon, renting out his own premises in order to assist with his finances. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe stood matters down in order that the Probation Services could prepare a report before sentencing.

History students from King James I Academy will hear testimony from Holocaust survivor, Zigi Shipper, as part of a visit organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET). The visit is part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s extensive all-year-round Outreach
Programme, which is available to schools across the UK.Mr Nick Grieveson at King James I Academy said, “It is a privilege for us to welcome Zigi Shipper to our school and his testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced. An Exhibition of Children's Art Work, produced by Cockton Hill Infants School, will be on display from Monday 27th June till Friday 1st July. The collection covers a wide range of artwork produced by the children over a number of years as part of the Creative Partnership programmes. The youngsters and staff have worked with various artists and a creative agent to explore and experience
creativity. They have produced their own children's story and animated DVD, made tapestries, masks, games and many other items, composed their own songs and made up dance routines. Ray of hope for Bishop by John Phelan
At Kingsway last Sunday the Bishop Auckland Cricket Club 1st team did something that they have not done all season; they won a game! More importantly it was against fellow strugglers Middles-brough, so relegation from the Premier Division of the N.Y.S.D. League may not be the formality that we all thought. Furthermore a source close to the club revealed that a number of new players are on their way to the club to help with the relegation
battle.Bishop took first knock in this relegation fight but the visitors soon had them 60-5. However a sixth wicket stand of 71 between Graeme Wrightson, 46 runs, and Chris Sawyer, 36 runs, helped Bishop to a total of 170 all out.Middlesbrough never got going in their reply as Chris Sawyer was right on the money with 4-23 from 13 overs with two of those victims clean bowled.Fourteen year-old Callum Oldfield chipped in with
2-34 and Richard Arnott 2-12. None of the other Bishop Auckland senior teams finished a game last week because of the weather. The previous week the 1st team lost by seven wickets to Hartlepool after batting first and being dismissed for 76. Only Phil Holdsworth, 25 runs, Matthew Cowling, 22 runs, and Craig George, 10 runs, managed to reach double figures. The 2nd team had no game while the 3rd's were rained off against Yarm at home.

Congratulations go to St Mary’s Under 8 side who successfully made it through to the final of the Blackpool Cup competition recently. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite go the final step and lost 1-0, coming runners-up.In the same weekend, the Under 7 team took down two teams in a friendly round robin. One team were able to win four of their six games. That rounds up the Blackpool competitions for this year, with St Mary’s
bringing home a record four trophies - well done to the U9A, U9B, U10 and Under 14 Angels.A spokesperson for the club said, “We have had a terrific season again with the club growing season after season and next year we will be up to 24 teams of junior players, including five girl’s teams, and over 350 players along with over 60 volunteers. “Most age groups have two teams running for next year, playing under the Aces and the Kings and starting from 5 years to 17
year-olds. “We are wishing the U16 Kings the best of luck for their forthcoming tournament in Barcelona on the 5th July, when a group of 30 players and parents are spending 7 days in Spain after raising over £13,000 to take the players on a trip of a lifetime. “We would like to say a massive thank you to all volunteers involved, managers, coaches, secretaries, clubhouse helpers, parents and all the players.”
St Mary’s end their season on a high note

On 16th June at 11.30am, a 19-year-old man was attacked by a youth brandishing a vegetable knife. The incident took place at the skate park at the Town Recreation Ground, behind B&Q in Bishop Auckland. The victim suffered superficial cuts to the cheek and the forehead. The victim then defended himself by punching his attacker in the elbow, forcing the youth to fall to the floor. This allowed the victim to run off. The youth possibly has a damaged elbow which may have required treatment as a result.
The offender was with a group of five other young men who all appeared in their late teens. He is also described as white, of medium build with short light blonde hair, wearing a black baseball cap, a red and white tracksuit top with the red section forming a triangle from either shoulder to the zip. He was also riding a red and white mountain bike and did not sound as though he had a local accent.Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact PC Nicola Thorns at Bishop Auckland Police station on 0345 60 60 365.

Neighbour ‘provoked’A man who punched his former neighbour inside Tesco in St Helen’s was provoked, say Magistrates.Luke Murphy, of Bedford Place, Bishop Auckland, admitted assaulting Barry Marley in May.
The court heard how the incident was the result of months of tension between the pair, which began with Mr Marley playing loud music. Magistrates decided to waive any order for com-pensation.
