Honesty Car Acve Listener Dear Sugar Grove Families, Thank you for continuing to support your children with their educational experiences. I am excited to introduce our new Art teacher, Miss Alyssa Huelsenbeck. Miss Huelsenbeck has a Bachelor of Science in Drawing from Ball State University, and she recently graduated from Indiana University with her Masters in Art Education in May of 2016. Miss Huelsenbeck joins Sugar Grove with multiple field experiences, including student teaching at Shonto Prepatory Schools in Shonto, Arizona, as well as serving as the Assistant Director of Fine Arts at a camp in Hoensdale, Pennsylvania. She looks forward to inspiring our kids to find their own voice through art and learn how to express that voice in new ways. Miss Huelsenbeck will begin teaching at Sugar Grove on Monday, August 29. We wish Mr. Treece the best as he continues his career teaching art at Center Grove Middle School North. We have a number of school clubs that are available to students this year, and here are descriptions of some of those that will be offered: Art Club provides an opportunity for 4 th and 5 th grade students who express high interest and enthusiasm for the visual arts to further their skills and expand their artistic knowledge. Students work individually and collaboratively to create pieces of art that challenge their thinking and problem solving skills. The cost is $10.00 per student, and seating may be limited. Art Club meets for a total of 6 sessions after school, from 3:45-5:00, during the second semester. Sign up forms will be available in January. Exact club meeting dates are still to be determined. Club Sponsor: Miss Huelsenbeck (Art Teacher) Chess Club meets on Friday mornings beginning after Fall Break, and it ends just before spring break. It is a good opportunity for 4 th and 5 th grade students to learn about the game in a fun and relaxing environment. Interest forms will be sent home in late September. Club Sponsor: Mr. Wooton (5 th Grade Teacher) Intramurals is open to 4 th and 5 th grade students and will meet in the mornings. A wide variety of sports and activities will be explored for all interested parties to participate. Exact meeting dates are still being determined. Club Sponsor: Mr. Mueller (5 th Grade Teacher) Math Bowl is a competition for 4 th and 5 th grade students who enjoy math concepts, including number sense, computation, geometry, measurement, and problem solving. There will be a team of 20 students who will work together in groups to answer questions across 4 rounds of questions. Sugar Grove students will be competing against teams from other schools at a local to-be- determinedsite on February 23, 2017. Interest forms will be coming home soon and weekly meetings will begin after Fall Break. Club Sponsor: Miss Hammer (3 rd Grade Teacher) Math Pentathlon is a club focused on math games that promote strategic thinking, spatial/geometric reasoning, and problem solving skills. Students will learn five different games, practice them with other club members during weekly meetings after school, and then compete in a tournament against students from around the area. Sugar Grove has a grades K-1 Math Pentathlon Club and a grades 2-3 Math Pentathlon Club. This year, the competition for 2 nd and 3 rd graders will be on May 6, 2017 at Avon Middle School North. Interest forms for the grades 2-3 club will be going home during the second nine weeks, and meetings will begin in November. The competition for grades K-1 will take place on April 29, 2017 at Southport High School. Interest forms for K-1 Math Pentathlon Club will be sent home in the near future. The K-1 Math Pentathlon Club meetings will begin in September. Grades K-1 Club Sponsor: Mrs. Schoch (Kindergarten Teacher); Grades 2 -3 Club Sponsor: Miss Hammer (3 rd Grade Teacher) Music Appreciation Club is made up of students from grades 2 and 3 in the fall semester who are selected on the basis of classroom participation and performance. They will participate in a variety of musical enrichment activities designed to enhance the experiences and knowledge gained in the regular music classroom. During the spring semester, Music Club is for students in grades 4 and 5 and is designed for students especially interested in instrumental music. The fall Music Club will meet 6 times from October through early December. The spring club will meet starting in March. Club Sponsor: Mr. Koenig (Music Teacher) Robotics is a club for 4 th and 5 th grade students who will complete in the Lego Robotics League. More information about this club will be shared in the near future. Club Sponsor: Miss Shanafelt (5 th Grade Teacher) Lego Club is for second grade students. The club will provide additional STEM experiences using Legos. Students will also be introduced to skills they will use if they decide to join Robotics in the future. This club will begin meeting in late January, and interest forms will be sent home sometime in December. Club Sponsor: Mrs. Weidman (2nd Grade Teacher) Spell Bowl is a spelling competition that will take place on November 17, 2016. The club will be made up of interested students who qualify based on a spelling test. All 4 th and 5 th grade classrooms participate in a cold spellingtest of words from the current years state Spell Bowl word list. This took place in the middle of August. Scores are tabulated, and students that performed at the highest are invited to join. Club Sponsor: Mr. Mueller (5 th Grade Teacher) Student Council conducts various fundraising and service projects and provides student leadership in other areas as needed. The application process for Sugar Grove Student Council began during the first couple of weeks in August for interested 4 th and 5 th grade students. Dear Sugar Grove Families, Thank you for continuing to support your children with their educational experiences. I am excited to introduce our new Art teacher, Miss Alyssa Huelsenbeck. Miss Huelsenbeck has a Bachelor of Science in Drawing from Ball State University, and she recently graduated from Indiana University with her Masters in Art Education in May of 2016. PROCEDURE TO REPORT A STUDENT ABSENCE—A parent/guardian is to call the school to report a school absence ON THE DAY OF THE ABSENCE. You may leave a VOICE MAIL message at 885-5246. Press 1, and answer the questions, pressing the # button after each response. Voicemail is available 24 hours a day to report an absence. Calls prior to 8:00 am are encouraged and appreciated. If a call hasn’t been received by 10:00am the day of each absence, a School Messenger reminder notification will be delivered by telephone. A call is needed EACH DAY a student is absent. Your child should remain home if they have diarrhea, vomiting or an elevated temperature of 100 or

above. Students may return to school once they have been diarrhea free, vomiting free, and fever

free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.

ALL PRO DADS—What is All Pro Dads? All Pro Dads is a breakfast meeting held once a month before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids to enjoy a Chick-fil-A breakfast in the school cafeteria. At this gathering we discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, have fun and equip each other with resources to strengthen our family relationships. Learn more at www.allprodad.com. BODY SAFETY PROGRAMS—Center Grove Community School Corporation will begin its annual elementary school Body Safety program presentations during the month of September. Please join us for the ADULTS ONLY presentation at Maple Grove Elementary on September 7th at 7:00pm. This presentation will be led by Terry Hall, Sergeant (retired). Terry Hall is a twenty-eight year veteran of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department who has worked the administrative, operations and investigative areas of law enforcement during his career. Sergeant Hall spent seven years in the IPD Sex Offense Branch and was the former director of the “Good Touch - Bad Touch” program for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Sergeant Hall has been involved in Child Abuse Investigations; he has trained over 10,000 prosecutors, judges, and law enforcement officers at the local, state, and federal level.

BIBLE CLUB IS BACK AGAIN!!! Our first meeting w ill be on Wednesday, September 7. We w ill meet in the Sugar Grove Library at 8:00 AM sharp. Many families were able to sign up before school started. If you were not able to sign your child up early, please bring your child to our first meeting and they will receive information on how you can officially sign up with CYBC. This year we will be looking at the many HEROS of the BIBLE! I hope to see many former faces and even more new faces. Kids are always encouraged to bring a friend with them!!! ATTERBURY-MUSCATATUCK COMMUNITY DAY EVENT Camp Atterbury is hosting its 2nd Annual Community Day event scheduled for Saturday, August 27, at 10 a.m. This year’s event will kick off at the Veterans Memorial Wall with a welcoming ceremony and tribute to service members and veterans that have deployed through Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck since World War II. This year the Atterbury-Muscatatuck team has expanded the event to a new location at the Atterbury Railhead and Deployment Center, located across from Johnson County Park. The event will feature a military static display area, community information, live music, food, tours, history re-enactors and live fire demonstration. Join CENTER GROVE AQUATIC CLUB (CGAC) this Fall to be a part of the exciting sport of sw imming! CGAC

welcomes swimmers of all levels (ages 5-18). Current CGAC Parents and Coaches will be on hand to greet your

FALL SWIM LESSONS: CGAC is holding swim lesson registration on August 31 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Center

Grove High School (Hall of Excellence) Natatorium.

PRE-COMPETITIVE AND COMPETITIVE NEW SWIMMER EVALUATIONS: CGAC will hold new swimmer

evaluations on September 8 (5:30-7pm) and September 10 (8:30-10:30 am) at the CGHS Natatorium. Swimmers

will be placed on teams according to their skills and abilities.

STUDENT DISMISSAL GUIDELINES—If your child is doing something other than riding the school bus that is assigned to your home address, it is imperative that you notify us of the change. All changes to regular routines need to be requested by 3:00pm (2:15pm on Wednesdays). Dismissals that require a note or email: *Middle of day pick up in Office for appointments; *Unscheduled end of day pick up in Cafeteria; *Regular Parent pick up in Cafeteria, either everyday or on regularly scheduled days of the week (contact the Office for a form to fill out); *Going to Daycare (list daycare provider—this also includes Honey Grove); *Walking to Brentwood subdivision; *Riding a different bus due to childcare reasons, (requires permission from Transportation) (in your note list bus number and the address students are going to)

Please note that everyone picking up students either from the Office during the day, or from the Cafeteria after school, will be required to show a driver’s license every time they pick up.
