An Interview with Major Alan Goodenough Major Alan Goodenough is an Officer commanding the Duke of Lancaster’s regiment recruitment team andhas been in the Army since he was 16 years old and joined as a private. Major Goodenough has worked hisway through the ranks of the Army during the last 27 years and was commissioned as an officer in 2000.

Q. Why did you choose the Army instead of the Air Force or the Navy?A. I chose the Army because in my view the Army is the most important, if the Infantry wasn’t there to clear

the ground for air fields obviously the Air Force wouldn’t be there and the Navy wouldn’t be able to win awar from the sea, so the Army was the one for me because I wanted to be defending the front line.

Q. What made you want to join the Army?A. Well, I wanted a new job every 2 years, I wanted a bit of adventure, and I wanted

a bit of action with good blokes.

Q. What age do you have to be to join the Army?A. You can apply for the Army when you are 15 years and 3 months old and if you are successful in your

application you will begin training when you are 16 years and 3 months. You can join until you are 26years old, however if you wish to be an officer, you may join between the ages of 18 and 26.

Book FairEvery year, the school Learning Resource Centreholds two school book fairs. The November book fairwas very successful, with the school gaining £520.00in commission fees, which the school spent on booksfor the LRC. The summer book fair holds a “buy oneget one free” scheme, as a way of saying thanks to thepupils who supported the last fair. The total for thisbook fair was over £1300.00! This is a greatachievement for the school as it is the largest amountthe book fair has raised to date. The school book fairis an excellent way for pupils to improve their literacyskills at home.

The boys, who were calm, cool andcollected, rehearsed all day in the CLC and thenwaited nervously for their chance to perform in frontof a sold out crowd in the evening. After fourexcellent performances the judges went out to maketheir decision and Nathan Carter was chosen for thesecond year running to perform in the grand final atthe Philharmonic Hall on Monday 19th June. Interview with Mr Ripponabout School RefurbishmentSince the last newsletter all external doors have beenreplaced. The older ones were damaged and broken. Thenew doors are much more secure, and of course they looka lot better. Several windows have been replaced in themain building but windows are currently only beingreplaced on a needs basis as it would cost too much toreplace all of them. We are getting a new central heatingboiler, the old boiler was about 45 years old and had to becut up in the boiler room over the recent half term holidayand was removed by a crane. The energy efficient newboiler is currently under construction and will be ready forSeptember. Extensive outdoor seating has been providedfor pupils and more is on the way, there is also an outdoorarea for staff now. Over the summer holiday the librarywill be refurbished as will the ground floor in the sixthform block which from September will be an ICT suitewith new computers. More details of this project can befound in this newsletter.

Minibus Update

The Parents’ association work with the school raisingmoney for items which are not covered by school funds. Our current aim is to provide the school with a newminibus. We have been working really hard over the last18 months organising and holding various events whichhave helped us move towards our target. We are now inthe process of looking at suitable vehicles and haverecently organised a demonstration of two models on theschool grounds where staff could have a proper look atwhat we are hoping to buy.

We hope you can appreciate that finding a suitable vehiclefor boys of different ages and sizes and for differentactivities and distances is not an easy task but we areconfident of finding a suitable model. We hope to finalisedetails and place an order by the end of this year so thatthe boys can start making use of the vehicle when wecome back for the new academic year.

We hope our last function of the year ‘Last Night Of TheProms’ will add the final amount to the total needed andmight even leave us enough left over for a pair of fluffydice!! We hope you will continue to support us in oureffort.

Gardener Systems VisitIn June, Mr Roberts took a group of students from 8Barlow to visit Gardener Systems. They looked at howbusinesses use ICT within their companies. The pupilslearnt about how ICT is used in every day life and howit impacts on their lives without them knowing it. Theydiscussed how they used mobile phones tocommunicate, the Internet for games and how ICT isused in our everyday lives. In addition to this, they alsodiscussed how parents used ICT to perform bankingactivities and save time by using the Internet. MrRoberts said “the boys’ behaviour was fabulous andthey all really enjoyed the day”.

Science NewsYear 12 Students attended a very successful A-levelBiology field-trip to Ainsdale at the end of June wherethey investigated sand-dune succession. The weatherwas beautiful and everyone seemed to enjoy theexperience. Students should be continuing withcoursework tasks in Biology and Physics over thesummer holidays.

Year 10 pupils should be finishing coursework. (if thishas not already been done). The ‘modular’ part of theGCSE course is finished (except for some re-sits andfor those pupils in 10/11J1 who are studying forseparate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics –these pupils will complete extra modular tests inNovember and March of next year).

Year 9 pupils have been put into sets according totheir performance in the end of KS3 SATs. It is veryimportant that parents and pupils realise that sincecompleting the SATs exams back in May, pupils havebeen following GCSE courses and that any workcompleted after May is important and should behanded in to teachers for safe-keeping over thesummer break.

Italy Trip

In May, boys from Years 7, 8 & 9 went on a trip to Italy withthe Classics department. The boys started their trip at 4o’clock in the morning, arriving at the school early for thesix hour journey to London. They had to get up so earlybecause they had to be at the airport three hours beforetake-off. The trip lasted for seven days and the boystoured Rome, Naples & Sorrento visiting the Colosseum inRome. Mr Slattery led the group with Mr Harrison & MrFox helping out. Although the trip was educational theboys still managed to enjoy themselves by going up MtVesuvius near the ancient city of Pompeii which wasdestroyed when Vesuvius erupted in the early first centuryA.D, visiting the Vatican and the Trevi fountain in Rome aswell. The boys enjoyed the trip and hopefully it willcontinue for years to come.

The Army Visit to SFXOn Thursday 15th Junethe army visited Year 9at SFX. The studentswere given a chance topartake in a variety ofactivities such as paintballing, an assaultcourse and holdingfirearms. The assaultcourse was a variety ofsimple challengesincluding monkey bars, rope ladders and see-saws. The course wascalled “challenging” anda member of staff wasrecorded to have said

that “she would never have tried it”. The paintball activitywas enjoyed by most of the year group, except 9A (becausewhen it was their turn the guns ran out of gas). Thestudents had to shoot five paint balls at five differenttargets. The students were also allowed to handle riflesand sniper rifles. The pupils learned that the rifles wereeffective up to 1500 yards. It gave the pupils a realisticexperience of what the soldiers have to carry day after day.

The soldiers also did a march for all the pupils to watchduring the morning assembly. The soldiers were fullydressed in their marching uniform. The other soldierswere dressed in camouflage. The soldiers explained to usthat any wars are no longer called wars; they must becalled conflict. This was due to the “Geneva Convention”.

Each class in Y9 were given the opportunity to speak tosoldiers from the Duke of Lancaster regiment, which wasrecently formed from three battalions. The students werealso given the chance to watch a very informative videoabout the regiment and what it does. The students weregiven a variety of leaflets about the army and its careerpaths.

Year 9 "Mini Mouse" Project

On Thursday 15th June, several Year 9 pupils fromSFX were invited to takepart in a project called"Mini Mouse" at thePartnership for LearningCentre in Halewood. Theproject, organised andrun by a company called Set Point, consisted of 4 or 5 pupils from severalschools in Liverpool, includingBroughton Hall and St. Margaret’s.Each school was accompanied by aDesign Technology teacher (in ourcase, Mr. Bowers), and their "mice"built from materials in schoolworkshops. The event was toencourage increased knowledge inDesign Technology and to give thepupils taking part a taste forengineering.

The idea of the event was to competewith fellow schools "mice" in bothspeed and endurance tests. Thespeed test was to measure the fastestlap set by a team, whereas theendurance test was to measure howmany laps a mouse could do in a set

amount oftime. Allteams usedtwo mice forthe events, one for speed, the other forendurance.

When asked, about theirmodels, almost all ofthe teamsindicated thatthe circuit was the most difficult partof the assembly of the mice, mainlybuilt of wood and plastic. SFX finished3rd in both tests, much to thedisappointment of Mr. Bowers!

Along with the enjoyable event, co-hosts Jaguar were kind enough togive the schools a guided tour arounda “top secret” manufacturing building, where new models of Jaguar werebeing built. Many of the pupils werevery interested in the manufacturingprocess and were keen to askquestions (including Mr. Bowers whothinks he knows everything aboutcars!).

Andrew Dunbar & John Hyland

It is a huge change for boys to come from a very smallprimary school to SFX which has an impressive numberof thirteen hundred pupils. They may not have anyfriends and they will have at least ten new teachersinstead of one permanent one. The aim of the inductionday is to take away their anxiety.

Boys will have an assembly with Mr Rippon, BrotherPeter and Mrs Fay. They will sing songs with BrotherJames’ band. Some Year 7 students will attend andspeak to the students about their experiences from theprevious year.

After the assembly students will be put in groups, mixedwith different students from different schools. They willattend three lessons which could be; History, French,Mathematics, ICT, English, DT, Art, Science orGeography. They will also have the opportunity to speakwith sixth formers and they will get a booklet titled “MyNew School” and another titled “All About Me” whichthey have to complete.

Their first day here will be their next exciting meetingwith us, although Mrs Fay does visit every feeder school.

Mr Harrison, Mr Roberts, Ms Cavanagh, Mr Bowers,Miss Martin, Mr Daniels and Mrs Norris have all workedwith primary pupils this term.

An Interview with DenzelKadzvitiOn the 17th of May I was delighted to find out that I hadbeen nominated for a citizenship award by the school. I wasnominated for the award by SFX for work I had done withschool and for the community including, helping out at anelderly person’s home, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award andthe Liverpool School’s Parliament.

At the presentation ceremony which was at the MetropolitanCathedral, I was accompanied by Mr Rippon, Ms Finlay,Brother Peter, Mrs Fay and my parents who were all veryproud of what I had achieved. They were all proud because Ihad only joined SFX 4 years earlier. During this time thestaff and pupils at SFX helped me to settle in and cope withthe transition from my old school in Zimbabwe to school lifeat SFX. Before I was presented with the award, Mr Ripponspoke of my achievements. The award was then presentedby the former Polish President Lech Walesa, who wasattending the ceremony and also giving a Roscoe Lecture. Inhis lecture he spoke of integrity and respect.

So I would just like to leave a few words for those who areleft in SFX as this is my last year. I have only been in thisschool for a very short time but thanks to the atmosphere Ihave settled well and made to feel I belong. I would wish forthis atmosphere to continue to be present. You, the studentsare who make SFX what it is so I would like to encourageyou to carry on where I have left off, making the most ofevery opportunity you are presented with, doing good workin the community, participating in all aspects of school lifeand being successful in and enjoying whatever youparticipate/partake in. Never forget, you are the people whomake SFX what it is.

An Interview with Mr. Harrison about Year 8 Football.Who were the teams you played and what were the scores? We played Cardinal Heenan in the final and the score was1-1 but S.F.X retained the title as they were the previousYear 7 holders. The final was the Liverpool Schools Year 8Cup, and the final was played at Walton Soccer Centre.

Although it’s obvious that the whole team performed wellwho would you say played the best and outshone the restof the team? All of my players are the best so you’re not getting oneparticular person. They are all picked to a formula of skill, ability and character. If they don’t show all of those thingsthey don’t get a game.

Did you make any tactical changes during the final gamethat were changed from the one’s you used to get there? It was quite a tactical battle on the whole because theopposition played five in midfield. Then they would bringfive good players on in midfield as subs which obviouslygets you thinking. We didn’t make a lot of tactical changesin that game so then we went to three at the back. We didthis so that we could match three midfield. We picked theside to win and we were winning 1-0 then we hit the post at1-0. If we had gone 2-0 up we would have won but nocomplaint for 1-1.

Did you use interchangeable formations to contend withdifferent styles of team and if so, why?Yes we do normally do that but not necessarily in that final. We either play 3, 2 or 1 upfront depending on the team butwe always play 4 at the back. Saying that, if we’re winning5 or 6 nil we might think about changing it.

If you got the chance to re-play the tournament would youdo anything differently and why? (Very long pause)……….No.

If you could manage any team at all in the world whowould it be, and not the SFX Year 8 team ?Togo … (laughs)
