I was reminded a few weeks ago about an opti-cian who fell into his lens grinding machine and

made a spectacle of himself! In an unrelated incident, a local butcher was dis-

tracted by his apprentice whilst making the mincefor his fabulous pork sausages. He stepped back-wards, catching his rear end in the mincer and as

a result has got behind in his orders.

Redhead JokeA gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and says that "her body hurts"when she touches it.

"Impossible", says the doctor "Show me"

The redhead takes her finger and pushes on her cheek, then screams; she pushesher eye, then screams in even more agony.

She pushes on her knee, then screams; she pushes on her thigh, and more screaming

Then she pushes on her ankle, more screams, and everywhere she touches, makes her scream.

The doctor asks, "you're not really a readhead are you?"

"Well no" she says "I'm actually a blonde"

“I thought so" the doctor says, "Your finger is broken."

Is there enough room?13 people came into a hotel with 12rooms and everybody wanted his ownroom. The bellboy solvedthis problem. He asked the thirteenth guest to wait amoment with the first guest in roomnumber 1. So in the firstroom there were two people. The bell-

boy took the third guest to room num-ber 2, the fourth tonumber 3, ... and the twelfth guest toroom number 11. Then he returned toroom number 1 and took the thirteenth guest to empty roomnumber 12.So, does everybody have his ownroom?

What’s that Bill? Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The managerfinds out that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return. On the way to the room thebellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1to each person. Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totalling $27. Thebellboy has $2, totalling $29.Where is the remaining dollar?

Bill Black working on his earring stand.

Bill’s drilling jig

B ill Black demonstrated during the June Maxi-day andused the jig he made from a drill press mechanism to

place the holes in the earring stand he turned. The mecha-nism, available from some of our advertisers, is an inexpen-sive means of using an electric hand drill as a small drill

press. Bill has mounted the mechanism in a horizontal posi-tion for drilling from a fixed position, such as is requiredwhen placing holes in a turning using the lathes indexing sys-tem. For repetitious work, as is the case when drilling twentyodd holes around an earring stand, the jig speeds up the proc-ess and ensures greater accuracy than working freehand.

The drill press mechanism has been fastened onto awooden frame that attaches to the banjo using anappropriate diameter bar (the same way the tool

rest is positioned).

Wood Dimensions ExhibitionHazelhurst - June 16 to 27, 2006

A sincere thank you, to all members who assisted with the setting-up of the exhibition, in particularKen Phillips for the use of his van to transport equipment to and from The Cubby House.

A BIG THANK YOU to those members who donated prizes for our Raffle;

Also our gratitude and appreciation go to Judy Fisher for the hours she painstakingly contributed toprepare the gallery for our exhibition. On completion our exhibition looked absolutely magnificent anda credit to all those exhibitors who participated.

The official opening on Saturday 17 June 2006, Ken McEwen commenced the proceedings by wel-coming all those in attendance on behalf of Southern Region; this was followed by our new GuildPresident Barry Belford who spoke on behalf of the Guild.

Barry Collier, Sate Member for Miranda, officially opened the Exhibition, followed by the Honour-able, Danna Vale, Federal Member for Hughes. It is always pleasing to hear both Danna and Barryspeak because they always have kind words of support and encouragement for Southern Region forour contribution to the local community.

Catering for the Official Opening went over very well considering we had no idea how many peoplewould attend the function, our estimated catering for 90 was more than sufficient for the 100 or so visi-tors who attended. Another thank you to Judy Fisher who organised and arranged for the cheese plat-ters on the day, this created additional flavour and variety to our tables with considerable cost savingsto Southern Region.

During the course of the exhibit it was interesting to talk to the visitors and find how far they had trav-eled to visit us at Hazelhurst.

There were people from Port Macquarie on route to Wollongong, others from Forbes (who actuallywon a raffle prize) another from Berry (who also won a raffle prize), several others had seen our ad-vertising in The Australian Woodworker Magazine and the NRMA ‘Open Road’ Magazine fromwhich I had a telephone call requesting more detailed directions to Hazelhurst.

Then there were the visitors who came to see the star of the exhibition, ‘Patio’ Bruce Leadbeatter.

Bruce featured in the Leader, the local community newspaper, and it was a must see situation for thosevisitors who wanted to meet the man in person.

Results of the Raffle Draw held at Hazelhurst on 27 June 2006, prizes random drawn by:Michael Rolfe, Centre Manager/Gallery Director.Graham Kime, Arts Centre Coordinator.Hazelhurst Volunteers, Coby and Marilyn.

SummaryThis Exhibition was a tremendous success the best ever. It had widespread interest from a vast crosssection of visitors many showed interest in visiting us at Southern Region with the possibility of joiningand having woodturning lessons.

On both occasions that we have exhibited at Hazelhurst, it has been the best public exposure that South-

ern Region has had to exhibit quality work and capture the attention of the public to wood crafts. This iswithout doubt the best promotion tool we have used to present the diverse ways of creating works of artwith wood for the enjoyment of people of all ages.
