for requesting & receiving information from a group.
You can:
Gather formal/informal information
Preplan your questions or use instant questions
Integrate questions into a lesson or use them on their own
Save or discard student response
Specify whether you want student response to contribute to grades or not

How Does It Work
How does the SMART Response System Work?

Components
What does Each Component Do?
Students submit answers with the clickers to your computer. You can save/discard results.
Receiver sends information wirelessly between your computer & student clickers
Use SMART Notebook Software to display lessons and questions to students. You monitor assessment progress and use the result charts to review responses with class.
Use Teacher Tools Software to associate a response with a particular student. Teacher tools operate behind the scenes collecting, sorting, & saving responses. It also allows you to analyze results and create achievement reports

Classroom setup
Setting Up SMART Response in the ClassroomHardware:
> Receiver
> Clickers
Software:
> SMART Response (downloaded from smarttech.com)

Setting Up SMART Response in the Classroom
Steps:
1. Install SMART Response Software• need to have it installed on computer connected to SMART board
as well as any other computer used to create assessments.
2. Connect the receiver to the computer• mount as high as possible
• avoid mounting to metal surface
• connects via USB cord no power cord
3. Install batteries in the clickers

Setting Up the Wireless ClickertoComputer ConnectionSteps:1. Computer signal the receiver to broadcast an identifying channel
2. Students turn on their clickers.
3. Clickers scan for classes within range.
4. Your classroom name appears on each clicker screen.
5. Students select their teacher's computer via clickers.
6. Students enter responses into clickers.
7. Clicker wirelessly send the response to computer.
SMART Teacher File
Setting Up a Storage System for Student Responses
SMART Response system saves students' response to a SMART Teacher file so you can access them from any computer with SMART Response software installed.
Creating Classroom
To set up the Wireless ClickertoComputer Connection1. Click on SMART Response icon in the notification area
2. Click Click here to Start a Class under the Teacher Tools heading. The SMART Response Teacher Tools window appears.
3. Complete all the fields to create you SMART Teacher File.
4. Type a classroom name for your receiver.
5. Click Save.
6. Give it a file name and Save it to My Documents.
Creating class
To Create a SMART Teacher File
1. Open Teacher Tools software.
2. The Gradebook Information window appears.
3. Click Add a Class in the Teacher Tools side menu of Gradebook view or under Next Steps.
4. Type your class information into the fields.
5. Click Add. The Gradebook list displays the class.

Adding Students
To Create a SMART Teacher File
Add students to each class:
1. Select the Students tab.
2. Click Add or select Edit>Add

To Create a SMART Teacher File3. Type the student information into the fields. Use the Tab key on your keyboard to advance to the next field.
4. Type keywords in the Tag field that you want to associate with that student.
5. Press the Tab key to advance to the next row and add another student.

To Create a Class by importing a Class List from NCWISE1. Open NCWISE.
2. Create a class record for your class.
3. Open Excel.
4. Create 3 Column Headings
a. Cell A1 = ID Number
b. Cell A2 = First Name
c. Cell A3 = Last Name

5. Go back to NCWISE and copy the pupil number.
6. Go back to Excel and paste the pupil number under ID Number column.
7. Go back to NCWISE and copy the student name information.
8. Go to Excel and paste this information under Last Name column.

To Create a Class by importing a Class List from NCWISE1. Go to Teacher Tools
2. Click Add a Class in the Gradebook area on the left
3. Complete the Class Information boxes and then click Add
4. Click the Student tab
5. Click the Import button, and then select Students.

8. Select Microsoft Excel from the Import list, and then click Next.
9. Browse to and select the .xls or .xlsx file containing the class list, and click Open

Setup Checklist
The receiver is connected to the computer that you use to display your SMART Notebook questions.
All lights on the receiver are green.
Your name & Classroom name are visible on your screen when Teacher Tools software is open
The Classroom name displayed in Teacher Tools is something your students will associate with you , regardless of your location in the building.
The side menu of the Teacher Tools Gradebook view contains the classes you teach
The Students tab for each class contains student names and information.
Each student has been assigned a unique Student ID that they will remember

Deciding Where to Place a Title PageA Title Page signals the beginning of a question set. The results from each question are stored and made available for review.
If you do NOT place a title page in front of a question page, that question is treated as its own question set. Results will display immediately after each question is delivered. These results are NOT stored.

Step 1: Create a Title Page

Step 3: End the question set*Tips:
1. If you want all informal assessments excluded from your students' reported grades, create an assessment type labeled Informal.
2. Add tags to allow you to compare student results based on type of questions.
3. You can rearrange pages of your question set by using the Page Sorter tab.
4. To set the correct answers to all questions at once, select Response> Set All Answers

Preparing to Deliver an Assessment
To Open an Assessment:
1. Open SMART Notebook by selecting SMART Response, and select Ask Questions.
2. Select File>Open.
3. Click Open

To Start a Class:
1. Select Response > Start Class and select a class folder to store response in.
2. Ensure that your Classroom name is indicated.
3. Click close* If you don't want to store or identify student responses, select Anonymous Mode

Connecting Clickers
After you start a class, you students use their clickers to wirelessly connect to your computer.1. Remind students of your Classroom name.
2. Instruct them to join your class by selecting your Classroom name and pressing Enter
3. Instruct students to enter Student ID
4. Instruct students to confirm that the name that appears on clicker is their own. If it is, press Enter to sign in. If not, select N and press Enter to reenter Student ID.
5. Check to see that all student clickers display Welcome to [your Classroom Name], [their name.]

Monitoring an Assessment
1. Press the SMART Response Assessment Software tab
2. Press the Progress button
3. Monitor the number of students who have answered
4. Press Show to see who you are still waiting for
5. Press the Next Page to advance to the next question

Ending an Assessment
• Prevents students from entering or revising responses
• Calculates grade, based on questions answered correctly out of total assessment.
• Displays each student's assessment grade on clicker (optional)
• Causes a Result area to replace the Progress area
• Saves student responses in your Teacher Tools teacher file (unless in Anonymous mode)

1. Ensure all students have responded to all the questions
2. Press Stop this Assessment in the Progress area.

1. Open Teacher Tools

4. Ensure that the Privacy option is set to off to view specific grade details.
5. Click an assessment
6. Use the Performance tab to display results of each questions. Use the Results tab to view student grades.

2. Navigate to a question page
3. Click the SMART Response Assessment Software tab.
4. Click the Results button
5. Click Show in the Details section of Results area

Evaluating Student PerformanceTo view & compare stored student results:
1. Open Teacher Tools
2. Select a Class from the Gradebook side menu
3. Click the Student tab to display all students enrolled in your class
4. Ensure that the Privacy option is set to off to view specific performance and grade details.
5. Click a student name in top pane.
6. Use the Performance tab to graph a student's assessment results over a period of time. Use the Results tab to view detailed statistics for individual assessments.

2. Click Reports in the Gradebook side menu
3. Select either Student Performance or Class Performance in the Reports list
4. Use the dropdown menus to select the criteria for the report
5. Click Browse to select a location to save the report
