LOCAL NEWS and EVENTS BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF QUEENSLAND WEEDSAtkinson/Buaraba Creek Catchment Landcare

Group Inc are participating in a Cats Claw Bio

Control program with the assistance of Biosecurity

Queensland. Scientists and land managers are

hoping that a number of species of insects will

provide long-lasting control to support integrated

management of some of our worst weeds

including Cats Claw Creeper and Madeira vine

that impact on our native vegetation across most

    of South East Queensland (SEQ).

Two biocontrol agents have been released on

weed infestations throughout SEQ, with promising

signs so far. One of these insects, the leaf-mining

jewel beetle (Hylaeogena jureceki), has been

released on a property in the Buaraba catchment.

A close eye will be kept on how the insect

performs in a field situation and further updates

will be provided down the track.

STEPS TO SAVE SWAMP TEA TREE FOREST

In November 2012 The University of

Queensland, with support from SEQ Catchments

and the Greenworks program, held a tree

planting at its Gatton Campus to help to

    conserve this endangered forest community

    containing Swamp Tea-tree (Melaleuca irbyana).

Over 60 volunteers planted nearly 2000 trees onthe day. With less than 1000 hectares of this

forest community remaining, it is important we

look after and extend what we have left. Check

out our photos of the day on facebook.
