Thoughts Along The Way

Annual Appeal Update

My brothers and sisters, six months ago I spoke to you in a recorded message to ask your help with the 2019 Bishop’s Appeal, Living Our Faith. Today I want to give a brief update on the response to this year’s appeal thus far. With several months to go, we’ve reached eighty-two percent of our diocesan goal — a most encouraging statistic. The image on this year’s Bishop’s Appeal poster shows Mary and Joseph guiding the halting steps of the infant Jesus down the street. And that’s a good image of the Appeal’s purpose—that we show our children and grandchildren how to keep their balance as Christians and walk toward the Light that brightens our darkness. Faith comes alive when we work together to spread it. If you’re like me and you need more time to make up your mind, remember that every additional donation brings us closer to 100%. To those of you who have already contributed, thank you. Thank you many times over. Your generosity will make it easier to live our faith in the year ahead. God bless you.

Pensamientos A Lo Largo Del Camino

Obispo Liam Cary

Building Catholic Culture through the Annual Appeal

Your gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal support a number of diocesan ministries, programs and services, which include the promotion of Evangelization, Faith Formation, and Religious Education—all highlighted at the annual Evangelization and Catechetical Symposium a few days ago at the diocesan Retreat Center. The theme at this year’s Symposium “Building Catholic Culture” focused on ways to encourage and build Catholic identity in our parishes as individuals and in our homes. It is the goal of the diocese to equip the leaders and volunteers in each parish to help those in their communities grow in this identity. Additionally, other presentations focused on classroom teaching and management strategies. This year, through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, scholarships were made available for those who could not afford the registration costs. The stronger the faith of our Catholic community, the more we will see a Catholic culture begin to develop. We are happy to recognize these parishes and missions who exceeded their parish goal:

An Announcement from The Bishop Bishop Cary has notified the owners of the property in La Pine, occupied for many years by Father Arsenius Anachoreta, that as of 1 September 2019 it will no longer be used for religious purposes by the Diocese of Baker and will therefore revert to them for their exclusive use as provided in the original agreement. The Diocese has made other provisions for Father Aresenius’ residence.

Diocesan News: Welcoming Jim Golden

We are pleased to introduce Jim Golden to the Diocesan team as our new Catho l ic Schoo ls Superintendent. Jim replaces Dr. Dennis Dempsey who served as our Superintendent for the past seven years and is now enjoying retirement. Jim has been a professional educator for 35 years. During this

time he served as a vocational education teacher, science teacher and special education teacher. He then moved to Prineville where he served as a high school principal for Crook County. Jim also served as the Director of programs for children at the High Desert Education Service District. Finally, he worked as a school superintendent for eight years (five of those years in Sisters and three years in Albany). During his work as a school superintendent, Jim was elected by his peers to be the President of the Oregon Association of School Executives. Jim is interested in instructional methodology and insuring that every student learns to be a critical reader and thinker. He is excited to serve the students, staff and Catholic Communities in our four Catholic schools. Jim and his wife, Rebecca, live in the Columbia River Gorge near The Dalles. Jim and Rebecca, married 35 years, have two adult children. He loves whitewater rafting, fishing and traveling both domestically and to other countries. Holy Redeemer parish in La Pine and its Mission parishes: Holy Trinity in Sunriver, Our Lady of the Snows in Gilchrist and Holy Family in Christmas Valley, held its annual Parish Picnic on Saturday, August 10th hosted this time around by Holy Trinity. The day was a fun-filled, refreshing, and resulted in a beautiful gathering for the 88 parishioners who arrived from various locations to celebrate being a Roman Catholic Parish in Central Oregon. Even the change of venue from Ft. Rock Park in Sunriver to Holy Trinity church facility due to weather concerns did not dampen the spirit of unity at this gathering!

Ricky Keller from Holy Trinity mission, led a team of parishioners to plan and organize events for the day. Everyone had a great time sharing their time and favorite recipes with parishioners in this very short four- hour time frame. All participants were given a ticket for a variety of door prizes. There were gift cards from several merchants, a wine basket, rosaries and a beautiful heart necklace donated for this occasion. Thanks go out to all who participated, shared and donated their time and talent to this fun-filled event!

Sacred Heart in Klamath Falls presents

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting this inspiring live drama by St. Luke Productions which will be filled with music, drama, and inspiring performances! This live production will enable us all to experience a personal encounter with God’s Divine Mercy. Not only does this drama share the life of Saint Faustina, but it also incorporates the story of a modern woman who struggles with issues that so many in our culture face – abuse, promiscuity, and abortion. It is a message of God’s forgiveness for all sinners that touches audiences deeply. The presentation will be held in the Sacred Heart Auditorium on Tuesday, October 1, following the 6:00 p.m. Mass. The play will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in attending, please call Paul Chutikorn at (541) 884-4566 or contact him via email: [email protected].
