Ron Hubbard is knownworld over as the founderof the Scientology reli-gion. A truly international figure, he reached out to

people in all lands and all cultureswith his philosophy, andScientology missions and churchesnow span five continents.

That international growthbegan at a pivotal time in Mr.Hubbard’s life when he calledEurope home. Throughout the1950s, as the vanguard of theScientology movement, he wouldregularly traverse the Atlantic toEurope, touring the continent,establishing new centres and delivering lectures. In 1959, whenexpansion in both Europe andabroad created the need for a truly international training andadministrative centre, Mr. Hubbardpurchased the southern Englandcountry estate of Saint Hill. It was from here he directed theworldwide expansion ofScientology and established the Saint Hill College, offering ministerial graduate courses.

Today, the works of L. RonHubbard are studied and appliedaround the world — a vast body ofknowledge comprised of morethan 5,000 writings and 3,000

tape-recorded lectures.The universal acclaim for

the man — including thousands of awards and recognitions andthe unprecedented popularity ofhis works among people from allwalks of life — is but one indicatorof the effectiveness of his technolo-gies. More importantly are the millions world over who considerthey have no better friend.

Although long celebrated as anauthor and explorer, it was the1950 publication of Dianetics: theModern Science of Mental Healththat initially focused world atten-tion on L. Ron Hubbard. Thatbook, which marked a turningpoint in history, provided the firstworkable approach to solving theproblems of the mind, the firsthope that something could bedone about the causes of war,crime, insanity and other irrationalbehaviour. Dianetics is somethingthat anyone can use to helpimprove himself and his fellows.For just that reason, shortly afterthe book was released in theUnited States and Great Britain,Williams College Professor ofGovernment, Dr. Frederick L.Schuman declared in The NewYork Times, ”History has become a race between Dianetics and

catastrophe. Dianetics will win, ifenough people are challenged intime to understand it.”

Although most men might have been satisfied with such an accomplishment, L. Ron Hubbarddid not stop at Dianetics. Yes, hehad solved the riddle of the humanmind, but there still remained ques-tions on the nature of the humanbeing himself — puzzles concerningthat long-sought-after “something”we call life. From Mr. Hubbard’s methodical and exacting researchinto just that realm — the spiritualnature of man — came the appliedreligion of Scientology. It providedthe means to not only greater happiness, ability and awareness but practical remedies to such seemingly hopeless social problemsas drug abuse, the decline of moral standards and illiteracy.

How exactly L. Ron Hubbardarrived at the founding of Dianeticsand Scientology is a vast story andactually begins long before the publication of his first book on thesubject. Indeed, even in his early

youth he exemplified a rare sense of purpose and dedication which, combined with his adventurous spirit, made him a living legend. His life-long search for answers tothe human condition was equallyadventurous, for unlike otherphilosophers content to view eventsfrom an ivory tower, he knew that toreally understand man, one had tobe part of life. One had to rubelbows with all kinds and types of people. And one had to explorethe nooks and crannies of all existence. By any measure, it was an immensely full and interestinglife. The pages that follow attemptto offer some sense of that life, butthe true value of it lies in the legacythat he left mankind.

He said it best himself, when hewrote, “I have gone through theworld studying man in order tounderstand him and he, not myadventures in doing so, is the important thing… . My intentions inlife did not include making a story of myself. I only wanted to knowman and understand him.”

born on March 13, 1911 inTilden, Nebraska. At the age oftwo, he and his family took upresidence on a ranch outsideKalispell, Montana, and fromthere moved to the state’s capital, Helena.

As a young boy he learnedmuch about survival in the ruggedFar West — with what he called“its do-and-dare attitudes, its wryhumour, cowboy pranks, andmake-nothing of the worst andmost dangerous.” Riding horses

at the age of three and a half, he soon faced such dangers, escaping a pack of coyotes astridehis mare named Nancy Hanks.

L. Ron Hubbard’s mother wasa rarity in her time. A thoroughlyeducated woman, who hadattended teacher’s college priorto her marriage to Ron’s father,she was aptly suited to tutor heryoung son. Under her guidance,Ron was reading and writing atan early age, and soon feedinghis insatiable curiosity about lifewith the works of Shakespeare,the Greek philosophers and other classics.

family leave Montana for a seriesof cross-country journeys, Ron’smother was also on hand to helphim make up what he missed in school.

It was also through these earlyyears Ron first encountered another culture, that of theBlackfoot Indians, then still livingin isolated settlements on the outskirts of Helena. His particularfriend was an elderly medicine

man, who was, as he wrote, an “outlaw and interesting, a full-fledged Blackfoot MedicineMan... a small boy’s dream.”

Establishing a unique friendshipwith the normally taciturn Indian,Ron was soon initiated into thevarious secrets of the tribe, theirlegends, customs and methods ofsurvival in a harsh environment. Atthe age of six, he became a bloodbrother of the Blackfeet, an hon-

our bestowed on few white men. In early 1923, when Ron was

twelve, he and his family moved toWashington state, where his fatherwas stationed at the local navalbase. He joined the Boy Scoutsand that year proudly achievedthe rank of Boy Scout First Class.The next year he became America’syoungest Eagle Scout* ever, anearly indication that he did notplan to live an ordinary life.

t the end of 1923,young Ron travelledto Washington, D.C.via the PanamaCanal, meeting

Commander Joseph C.Thompson of the U.S. NavyMedical Corps. CommanderThompson was the first officersent by the U.S. Navy to studyunder Sigmund Freud, and took itupon himself to pass on the

essentials of Freudian theory to his young friend. “Through his friendship,” Ron noted, “I attended many lectures given atnaval hospitals and generallybecame conversant with psychoanalysis as it had beenexported from Austria by Freud.” Although keenly interested in the commander’s lessons, Ron was also left with many unanswered questions.

In 1927, at the age of sixteen,Ron took the first of his severalvoyages across the Pacific toAsia. There, both on his own andin the company of an officerattached to the British legation,he took advantage of this uniqueopportunity to study Far Easternculture. Among others hebefriended and learned from wasa thoroughly insightful Beijingmagician who represented the

last of the line of Chinese magicians from the court ofKublai Khan.

Although primarily renownedas an entertainer, Old Mayo wasalso well versed in China’sancient wisdom that had beenhanded down from generation togeneration. Ron passed manyevenings in the company of suchwise men, eagerly absorbing their words.

It was also through the courseof these travels that Ron gainedaccess to the much talked-aboutbut rarely seen Buddhistlamaseries in the Western Hills ofChina — temples usually off-limits to both local peasantsand visiting foreigners.

Among other wonders, Rontold of watching monks meditatefor weeks on end, contemplatinghigher truths. Once again then,

he spent much of his time investigating and questioning,seeking answers to the humandilemma.

Beyond the lamasery walls, heclosely examined the surroundingculture. In addition to the localTartar tribes, he spent time withnomadic bandits originally fromMongolia. He further travelled up and down the China coast exploring villages and cities,

delving into the fabric of the nation.

And everywhere he went, therewas one question uppermost inhis mind: “Why?” Why so muchhuman suffering and misery? Whywas man, with all his ancient wisdom and knowledge accumulated in learned texts andtemples, unable to solve suchbasic problems as war, insanityand unhappiness?

In pursuing the answer tothese questions, by the age ofnineteen, long before the adventof commercial airplane or jettransportation, he had travelledmore than a quarter of a millionmiles, including voyages not onlyto China but also Japan, Guam,the Philippines and other points in the Orient. In a very real sense,the world itself was his classroom,and he studied in it voraciously,recording what he saw andlearned in his ever-present diaries,which he carefully preserved forfuture reference.

Everywhere he went, he alsotook the time to help and teachothers. On a remote Pacificisland, for example, he proved tothe terrified natives that thegroans of a ghost in a supposedlyhaunted cave were nothing

more than the rushing of underground water.

In the South Pacific islands,Ron continued his search by venturing deep into the jungles ofGuam where he located anancient Polynesian burial ground,a place steeped in the tradition ofheroic warriors and kings. Thoughhis native friends were fearful forhim, he explored the sacred area— his initiative drawn from anunquenchable desire to know more.

These sojourns in Asia and thePacific islands had a profoundeffect, giving Ron a subjectiveunderstanding of Eastern philosophy.

Yet for all the wonders of theselands and all his respect for thosewhom he encountered, he stillsaw much that concerned him:Chinese beggars willing themselves to die above opengraves in Beijing, children whowore less than rags, widespreadignorance and despair. And in theend, he came to the inescapableconclusion that despite the wisdom of its ancient texts, theEast did not have the answers tothe miseries of the human condition. This remained evidentin the degradation and sorrow of its people.

eturning to the UnitedStates in the autumn of1929, Ron resumed hisformal education. Afterattending Swavely Prep

School in Manassas, Virginia, hegraduated from the WoodwardSchool for Boys in Washington, D.C.

He enrolled at GeorgeWashington University. His universitymajor should probably have been

ethnology, since he was already anexpert in many different cultures —from the Philippine pygmies to theKayan shamans of Borneo to theChamorros of Guam. But fate andhis father placed him, fortunately, in mathematics and engineeringinstead. With his knowledge of manycultures and his growing awarenessof the human condition, his back-ground in engineering and mathe-

matics would serve him well inundertaking a scientific approach tosolving the riddles of existence andrealising man’s spiritual potential.

Theorising that the world ofsubatomic particles might possiblyprovide a clue to the humanthought process, he enrolled in oneof the first nuclear physics coursestaught in the United States.Moreover, he was concerned for

the safety of the world, recognisingthat if man were to handle theatom sanely for the greatest benefit, he would first have to learnto handle himself. His aim, then,was to synthesise and test all knowledge for what was observable,workable and could truly help solveman’s problems. And to that end,he set out to determine preciselyhow the mind functioned.

In one of his first pioneeringexperiments on the subject, heemployed a sound wave measuring device called a “Koenigphotometer.” Two students readpoetry from extremely differentlanguages — Japanese andEnglish — into the device. Hefound that the device identifiedthe speech as poetry regardless oflanguage. When haiku was read inthe original Japanese, the wavelengths produced by theKoenig photometer were the sameas those produced when Englishverse was read.

Here, then, he concluded, wasscientific evidence that peoplewere not so different as he hadbeen led to believe, that there wasindeed a meeting ground, and allminds did in fact respond identically to the same stimuli.

Reasoning that questions aris-ing from his experiments wouldbest be answered by those whowere paid to know about the mind,Ron took these discoveries to thepsychology department. Ratherthan answers, however, he foundthat George Washington University psychologists had nocomprehension or understandingof the results — but more impor-tantly — they weren’t even inter-ested in such things.

Stunned, he soon came to therealisation that no one knew howthe mind worked. And furthermore,no one in the fields of psychologyor psychiatry was about to find out.

Not only were there no answersin the East, there were none to be found in any Western centre of culture.

“To be very blunt,” he put it, “itwas very obvious that I was dealingwith and living in a culture whichknew less about the mind than thelowest primitive tribe I had evercome in contact with. Knowing alsothat people in the East were notable to reach as deeply andpredictably into the riddles of themind as I had been led to expect, I knew I would have to do a lot of research.”

eciding that formalstudy had nothing moreto offer, L. RonHubbard left college inthe depths of the

Depression, again taking his questto learn about life out into the world.He said of this period, “...my writingfinanced research and this included expeditions which were conducted inorder to investigate primitive peoplesto see if I could find a commondenominator of existence whichwould be workable.”

He directed two expeditions, the Caribbean Motion PictureExpedition, a two-and-a-half month,5,000-mile voyage aboard the four-masted schooner, Doris Hamlin, andthe West Indies MineralogicalExpedition, which completed the firstmineralogical survey of the island ofPuerto Rico under U.S. rule. Uponhis return to the United States, andwith scientific grants few and farbetween, he began to write his wayto fame and fortune, supporting hisresearch by becoming one of themost popular writers of the 1930s.

The editor of ThrillingAdventures, one of the more than30 magazines Ron headlined, wrote in October 1934, “L. RonHubbard needs no introduction.From the letters you send in, hisyarns are among the most

popular we have published. Severalof you have wondered, too, how hegets the splendid colour whichalways characterises his stories ofthe faraway places. The answer is:He’s been there, brothers. He’sbeen and seen and done. And plenty of all three.”

While continuing to write for hisNew York editors — as well as pen-ning screenplays for Hollywood,such as Secret of Treasure Island —he never stopped his vital researchesinto man.

L. Ron Hubbard was searchingfor a principle that would lead to theunification of knowledge and explainthe meaning of existence — something other philosophers hadset out to find in the past with varying degrees of success. In fact,many Western philosophers had givenup on the idea that different peoplesheld anything in common and wereno longer even asking questionsabout the life force or the essence oflife. Man had become just anotheranimal, mere flesh and bones.

Yet Mr. Hubbard saw man in avery different light. Although he hadno name for it yet, he felt certain thatlife was more than a random series ofchemical reactions, and that somesort of intelligent urge underlay ouractions. Organising the tremendousbody of data he had acquired —

from his travels, research and exper-iments — he embarked upon a newexperimental path, this time todetermine how cells functioned.And following an elaborate series ofexperiments in early 1938, he madea breakthrough of magnitude — heisolated the common denominatorof existence: SURVIVE.

That man was surviving wasnot a new idea. That this was thesingle basic common denominatorof existence was.

The predominant theory of thetime held that life was simply achance chain reaction in a sea ofammonia. Disproving this materialisticbelief and forming the basis for all hislater work, his findings were compiledinto a philosophic manuscript,Excalibur, written during the firstweeks of 1938.

Recalling his work on this first ofmany manuscripts on the subject oflife, he noted, “I began to hammerout that secret and when I had

written ten thousand words, then Iknew even more clearly. Idestroyed the ten thousand andbegan to write again.”

The response of those whoread this manuscript was dramatic, and more than a fewpublishers eagerly sought to publish it. He declined. “Excaliburdid not contain a therapy of anykind but was simply a discussion ofthe composition of life. I decidedto go further,” he added.

“Somehow Ron knewthings that twenty-five-year-olds weren’tsupposed to know —how men thought, whatwas in their hearts andthe goals they foughtfor. And he knew thetime when you had totake a beating if youwere going to win out in the end.”

Writing prolifically throughthe 1930s for more than 30 different publications — and screenplays for Hollywood, such as Secret of Treasure Island —L. Ron Hubbard also searched for and isolated the single, basic common denominator of existence: SURVIVE.

r. Hubbard contin-ued to fund hisresearch by his evermore popular fiction writing. His stories

and novels spanned every genrefrom adventure and travel to mys-tery, western, romance, science fiction and fantasy. Writing not ofmachines and robots but of realpeople and real adventures, he pio-neered a whole new era of sciencefiction writing as one of the creators

of what came to be known as the“Golden Age of Science Fiction.”

His expeditions continued as well.Elected a member of the prestigiousExplorers Club in New York City, he was bestowed custody of its flag,a high honour in the field of exploration, for the Alaskan RadioExperimental Expedition in May1940. This expedition greatly assistedin the codification of the coastalcharts of British Columbia andAlaska. Also, as Mr. Hubbard

himself noted, the expedition provided an opportunity to examinethe mythological cycles of “the Aleutand Tlingit Indians as well as theHaidas, the last being very close tothe white race. I was particularly veryinterested in their stories and legendsconcerning the Great Flood, havingfound this legend in almost any primitive race I have met.”

from the U.S. Department ofCommerce. Three months later, heobtained a second certificate attesting to his marine skill: “Licenseto Master of Sail Vessels, Any Ocean.”

Throughout all of this, however,Mr. Hubbard was continuing in hisquest to answer the riddles of man.His writings and explorations had thepurpose of financing his researchesand expanding his knowledge of theworld and life.

Then came the war.

When the U.S. entered WorldWar II, Mr. Hubbard was commis-sioned as a lieutenant (junior grade)in the U.S. Navy and served as a commander of corvettes. He sawaction in both the Atlantic andPacific, and thoroughly distinguishedhimself in the eyes of those whoserved beneath him. Yet he was nota man who enjoyed war, and havingseen enough killing to last him a lifetime — and the effects of thatbloodshed on men’s sanity — he

vowed to redouble his efforts to create a saner world. With this samesense of compassion, he also did allhe could to safeguard his crews,prompting one of his men to write:

“I feel I owe you a tremendousdebt of gratitude. First for youracquaintance. Secondly becauseyou have portrayed to me all theattributes of a ‘story book’ naval officer. I can see for myself that youwere an officer and a gentlemanlong before Congress decided so.”

n 1945, left partially blind withinjured optic nerves and lamefrom hip and back injuries, Mr.Hubbard was hospitalised atOak Knoll Naval Hospital in

Oakland, California. Among the5,000 Navy and Marine Corpspatients at Oak Knoll were hundredsof former American prisoners liberated from Japanese camps onSouth Pacific islands. Many were interrible condition from starvationand other causes, unable to assimilate protein.

In an attempt to resolve thisproblem, Navy physicians wereadministering the male hormone,testosterone. This medical treat-ment, however, was not gettingeffective results on all patients, andMr. Hubbard utilised the opportunityto not only help his fellow service-men, but to test a theory he had developed in application.

“All I was trying to establish,” hewrote, “was whether or not the mindregulated the body or the body regulated the mind. Therefore, if onsome of these patients hormones didnot work and on some of them theydid, there might be a mental reason.If those patients on whom it did notwork had a severe mental block,then it was obvious that regardlessof the amount of hormone or medical treatment the personreceived, he would not get well. If

the mind was capable of putting thismuch restraint upon the physicalbody then obviously the fact that wascommonly held to be true, thatstructure monitors function, wouldbe false. I set out to prove this.... Iwas not interested in endocrinologybut in resolving whether or not function monitored structure orstructure monitored function.”

In case after case, he found thatby utilising techniques he had developed, previously unresponsivepatients immediately improved withmedical treatment once the mentalblocks were removed.

In fact, function did monitorstructure. As Mr. Hubbard noted atthe time, “Thought was boss.”

This was a revolutionary concept,cutting across misconceptions thathad plagued Eastern philosophy andscience for centuries.

With peace restored at war’s end,Mr. Hubbard immediately set out tofurther test the workability of hisbreakthroughs. This was intensiveresearch. For subjects he selectedpeople from all walks of life — inHollywood, where he worked withactors and writers; in Savannah,Georgia, where he helped deeplydisturbed inmates in a mental hospital; and in Washington, D.C.,New York City, New Jersey,Pasadena, Los Angeles and Seattle.In all, he personally helped over 400

individuals before 1950, with spec-tacular results. And he used thesame procedures to overcome theinjuries and wounds he himself hadreceived, fully recovering his healthby 1949.

Returning to Washington, D.C.,Mr. Hubbard compiled his sixteenyears of investigation into the humancondition, writing the manuscriptDianetics: The Original Thesis (todaypublished under the title TheDynamics of Life), a paper outliningthe principles he was using. He did

not offer it for publication. He gave acopy or two to some friends, and theypromptly duplicated it and sent it totheir friends who, in turn, madecopies and sent it to others. In thisway, passed hand to hand, Dianeticson its own became known the worldover. Word spread that he had madea revolutionary breakthrough.

L. Ron Hubbard had found thesource of human aberration andhad developed a technique of themind that worked. Dianetics was born.

Shortly thereafter, he found himselfliterally deluged with letters requestingmore information on the applicationof his breakthroughs. Hoping to makehis discoveries available to the broadpublic, and at the insistence of thoseworking with him at the time, heoffered his findings to the AmericanMedical Association and theAmerican Psychiatric Association. Theresponse was most enlightening. Notonly did the health care establishmentclaim no interest in his work, theydeclined to even examine his results.

Ron Hubbard’s friendsand associates wereaghast at the responsesfrom the bastions of healing. On the one hand

there were hundreds of case histo-ries with rave testimonials fromthose who had studied and usedDianetics and thousands of lettersfrom people wanting to know more.On the other hand were the few“experts,” who had resorted to 220volts of electricity to cure problemsof the mind, who had never studied

the subject of Dianetics but, nonetheless, didn’t want it.

And so the decision was made.L. Ron Hubbard would go directlyto the public with a handbook,detailing his discoveries and thetechniques he had developed.Never before had there been such atext on the mind, a work expresslywritten for the man on the street.

“There is something new comingup in April called Dianetics,” wrotenational newspaper and magazinecolumnist Walter Winchell on

January 31, 1950. “A new sciencewhich works with the invariability ofphysical science in the field of thehuman mind. From all indications, itwill prove to be as revolutionary forhumanity as the first caveman’s discovery and utilisation of fire.”

Winchell’s prediction proved correct.Dianetics: The Modern Science

of Mental Health was published onMay 9, 1950. The response wasinstantaneous and overwhelming.Almost overnight the book becamea bestseller, with 25,000 letters

The book hit The NewYork Times bestseller list, where itremained week after week, monthafter month. Dianetics was thenpublished abroad — first in the United Kingdom and Italy — forever changing L. RonHubbard’s life and, as we shallsee, the lives of millions.

The publication of Dianetics:The Modern Science of MentalHealth ushered in a new era ofhope for mankind, and with it anew phase of L. Ron Hubbard’slife. The first indication that he wasto be a public figure came immediately after the release ofDianetics. Although Mr. Hubbardhad originally planned yet anotherexpedition following the completionof his book, so great was the popular response to his work thathe had to change those plans.

Almost overnight,Dianetics becamea nationwidebestseller, with25,000 letters andtelegrams pouringinto the publisher.The book hit TheNew York Timesbestseller list andstayed there monthafter month, foreverchanging millions of lives.

Thus, instead of exploringislands off Greece, he soonfound himself lecturing onDianetics to packed hallsacross America. It was also at this time that the firstHubbard Dianetics ResearchFoundation was formed inElizabeth, New Jersey, andpeople began arriving indroves from North and SouthAmerica and Europe to studythe new techniques and findout more about the subject.

Dianetics took the U.S. bystorm in 1950 — witnessed bycapacity lecture audiences, national headlines and topbestseller lists.

Ron Hubbard’sresearch continued,and in March 1951 hecompleted his nextbook, Science of

Survival. In this 500-page work, hefurther explored the nature ofthought and life, offering readersan understanding of, and a newmeans to predict, human behaviour. The book is orientedaround the Hubbard Chart ofHuman Evaluation, which exactly

delineates the emotional scales of individuals, and provides precise procedures to bring anyone to the highest level andthus ultimate survival.

In 1951 he wrote a total of sixbooks, continuing to research andperfect the technologies ofDianetics with which he hadresolved the problems of thehuman mind. But this still leftmany unanswered questions,questions which man had been

pondering since the beginning ofrecorded history. “The further oneinvestigated,” he wrote, “the more one came to understandthat here, in this creature Homosapiens, were entirely too many unknowns.”

And so, within a year and ahalf of the release of Dianetics:The Modern Science of MentalHealth, L. Ron Hubbard hadembarked upon another journeyof discovery — entering the realm

of the human spirit. This track ofresearch, begun so many yearsearlier as a young man travellingthe globe in search of answers tolife, was to span the next threedecades. And as breakthroughafter breakthrough was codified,Scientology was born, giving man,for the first time, a route to higherlevels of awareness, understand-ing and ability that anyone could travel.

Given the inherently religious

nature of Mr. Hubbard’s workthrough these years, it was onlynatural that those surroundinghim would come to see them-selves not only as students of anew philosophy but also as stu-dents of a new religion. And so, in1954, Scientologists in LosAngeles established the firstChurch of Scientology. L. RonHubbard founded the subject —early Scientologists began the Church.

The Hubbard Association of Scientologists International (below) soon grew from its foundingmembership in the USA and Englandto active members on every continent.Meanwhile, the Founding Church ofScientology, established in Washington,D.C. (bottom) in March 1955, was thesite of Mr. Hubbard’s organisationalbreakthroughs, many sparking expansion that has continued worldwide ever since.

As more and more peoplediscovered his breakthroughs,Scientology churches sprang uprapidly around the world — inthe United States, Canada,Australia, United Kingdom,Europe and South Africa.Meanwhile, through his writingsand lectures, he continued tomake his discoveries availableto those who sought answers.

In 1959, Mr. Hubbard andhis family moved to England,where he purchased Saint HillManor in East Grinstead,Sussex. This was to be hishome for the next seven years, and the worldwideheadquarters of the Church of

Scientology. There, in additionto his constant writing andlecturing, he began intensivelytraining Scientologists fromaround the world so they, inturn, might return to theirhomelands and teach others.The mid-1960s saw himdevelop a step-by-step route for anyone to reach states ofhigher awareness. He alsocodified administrativeprinciples for the operation ofScientology churches — workthat brought about the expansion of the Scientologymovement on every continent.

n board ship for thenext seven years, L. RonHubbard again trav-elled extensively, whiledevoting his attention

to ever-worsening problems facingsociety through the late 1960s andearly 1970s. Of special note fromthis period is the drug rehabilitationprogramme he developed, recog-nised today by authoritative studies

around the world as the most effective in existence. It was alsoduring this period that he developed the highest levels ofScientology, refinements of applica-tion, new administrative principles,and advances in the field of logic.

Returning to shore in 1975, Mr.Hubbard continued his travels —first from Florida to Washington,D.C. and Los Angeles before finally

settling in the southern Californiadesert community of La Quintanear Palm Springs, his home until1979. There, searching for newways to make Dianetics andScientology more easily accessible,he wrote dozens of training films onthese subjects to visually demon-strate proper application of technicalprinciples. He directed many ofthese films himself.

Long concerned with accelerating social decay, in 1980Mr. Hubbard wrote a nonreligiousmoral code based on commonsense. Published in booklet form,it is entitled The Way to Happiness. In explanation of this work, hesaid, “Reading the papers andwandering around in the society, itwas pretty obvious that honestyand truth were not being held upto the standards they once had.People and even little kids inschools have gotten the idea thathigh moral standards are a thingof the past. Man has in his handstoday a lot of violent weapons. Hedoesn’t have the moral standardsto go with them.”

Loudly applauded by communityand civic groups around the world,The Way to Happiness soon spreadacross the planet. An entire grassroots movement formed todisseminate and use the booklet touplift the decency and integrity ofman. To date, more than 62 millioncopies have been distributed, withmillions more being demandedeach year.

Also in 1980, Mr. Hubbardfound time to resume his fictioncareer. Celebrating his 50th anniver-sary as a professional writer, heturned his prodigious energy to theauthoring of Battlefield Earth: ASaga of the Year 3000. This epic sci-ence fiction novel was followed bythe ten-volume Mission Earth opus,a satirical romp through the foiblesof our civilisation. All eleven bookswent on to become New York Timesand international bestsellers, a con-secutive bestseller record unmatchedby any writer in history.

Returning to his more seriouswork with continued research intoman’s spiritual potentials, Mr.Hubbard travelled extensivelythrough California in the early1980s. In 1983, he took up residence in the town of Creston,near San Luis Obispo. Here hecompleted his research and finalised the Scientology technicalmaterials he had spent most of hislife developing.

Today, those materials arerecorded in the tens of millions ofwords on the subject of the humanspirit, which comprise Dianetics andScientology philosophy. The over 25million words of his lectures — justthose that are on tape — areenough to fill over 100 volumes of text.

In fact, it may well be that L. Ron Hubbard’s works includemore literature, recorded researchand materials than any other single subject of philosophy, the spirit or religion. All of these materials areavailable to anyone who desires animprovement in his life. Well over150 million of his books are in circulation today.

Having fully completed hisresearch and seen its broad application expand to five conti-nents and over 60 countries,improving the lives of millions ofpeople, L. Ron Hubbard departedthis life on January 24, 1986.Instead of an end, however, itmarked the beginning of anunprecedented expansion of the religion of Scientology around the world, as more and more people benefit from his technologies.
