Sunday Sermons Pastor Bob Hanna

8:30, 9:30 and 11:00 am

September 9– Genesis 3, "What Went Wrong?". God no more than finishes speaking creation into existence and things (humans) begin going awry.

September 16– Genesis 7 & 8, "Another Beginning: The Flood." What could lead God to feel that creation had gone so far away from God's intentions that He had to wipe the slate clean?

Bites of Bread from Bob September 9 begins our official kick-off for our Fall Bible Study of Genesis. Genesis is a book of begin-ning that tries to explain why certain things are as they are. The big fancy theological word is "etiologies" (explanations of how things began). Why do snakes slither around on their bellies? Why do women suffer in childbirth? Why do we work? Why are there rainbows? Why are there so many languages? Why is there a special relationship between God and the Jewish people? But Genesis offers far more than these explanations. If we look carefully, we can see how the characters are not too unlike us. I one time had a person tell me that he didn't like the Bible because it was filled with people who were perfect. Obviously, this person had not been reading the same Bible that most of us own. Genesis is filled with people with so many flaws that, by comparison, we could find ourselves feeling superior.

If you were reading Genesis for the very first time, the plot would hold many unexpected twists and turns. As you read along with our study (the schedule is below) try to ask yourself how you would imagine the ending if you had not already read the ending. The book of Genesis has many new beginnings. With each new beginning there is the opportunity for good or bad. It all depends on the choices made. Carl Sandburg told of two men exchanging gossip in a general store in Hardin County, Kentucky, one day in February, 1809. "Anything happen this last week?" one asks. "No," the other answers, "nothing

happened. Oh, 'cept a new baby down to Tom Lin-coln's house. A boy, I think." Beginnings! In every beginning is success or failure. The same is true with all the new beginnings we have in Jesus Christ. Let's see what new beginnings God can make in us in the next 10 weeks.

God bless, Pastor Bob Genesis Bible Reading Schedule

For Children and FamiliesFor Children and FamiliesFor Children and FamiliesFor Children and Families A Little Light from Laurie “Light a Candle for Children” is a national 40-day prayer vigil for the children of the world, ending in an observance of the National Children’s Sabbaths (sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund, Washington, D.C.). Here is what the Disciples Home Missions has to say on their brochure: “The needs of the world’s children should be a priority for all of us as individuals, groups and communities of faith. Not all of us have been afforded the gift of working directly with children, but none of our lives has escaped the touch of a child in some special way.

“The National Council of Christian Churches’ Com-mittee on Justice for Children and their Families in-vites you to join in praying for a brighter future for all of God’s children. Remember, your church can and should make a difference where the needs, hopes and dreams of children are involved.

“Take the time to become involved in the lives of children. Let the candle of their lives inspire you and light your pathway as you advocate on their behalf.” “… and a little child shall lead them.” Isaiah 11:6

I came into this a little late, but invite you to light a candle and pray for our children each day from September 9-October 21. You can visit http://lightacandle.blogspot.com for daily meditations and other information and resources on this national event.

Next year, maybe there will be some individuals who would be interested in helping me to organize this in our church. For information on how to organize a prayer vigil in our church, visit the Disciples Home Missions Light a Candle brochure at http://www.discipleshomemissions.org/files/FCM-LightACandlebrochure.pdf

Flurries from Chris Summer is officially over for all of our students and teachers as they head back to the classroom. We are sending our children and youth back to school with a number of stories about what they were able to do with or through our church. Many of these stories were only possible because of the financial support of the entire church. Even though the excitement of summer is drawing to a close, we are planning events to provide our youth with more stories that are tied with the church.

With the start of the school year there is also the resurgence of competing events and responsibilities. This competition for time is not something that only happens with the youth, but with everyone. How we organize all these activities shows where our priori-ties are. When I see adults and youth who have every hour of their week filled with activities, I wonder, “When are they taking time to be with God?” This past week Pastor Bob spoke about the importance of resting with God. It is hard at times to stop and be still, to know God the Almighty is there. If we do not take that time, we lose sight of our true purpose.

We can begin to see what God wants for us through our participation in church through worship, Bible studies, prayer groups, service, Christian fellowship, Sunday school and youth groups. It is through these groups that we can gather with other Christians so we may help one another find the way that God has laid out for each one of us.

Women’s Spiritual Renewal Retreat October 12-13 Amy Gopp, Director for Week of Compassion, will be the retreat leader at the annual Regional Women’s Retreat at Murray Hills Christian Church.

She plans to reflect on the story of Esther, interpret-ing the story as one that increases the faith and courage of women today. Besides hearing from Amy, women will be able to make mosaic tiles, share in discussion and prayer groups, including our annual book group pick, “Surviving the Applewhites” by Tolan.

“One Bethlehem Night” Attention former cast members of “One Bethlehem Night”— We would like to recreate the magnificent Christmas musical we presented at FCC a few years ago. A meeting will be held in the Choir Room at 12:30 pm this Sunday, September 9, to make plans. Please bring your script, if you still have it, your calendar, and your enthusiasm. Contact Judy Dyer, 503-588-0438, if you have questions.
