SACRAMENTS

Baptisms

You must be a registered parishioner and attend one baptism class. This class is held the se-

cond Thursday of every month. Please fill out the brochure form found in the kiosk of the

church and return the form to the business office to sign up for the class. Marriage

According to the Archdiocesan guidelines and to ensure adequate preparation for this very

important Sacrament, you must make arrangements at least six (6) months ahead of the

Marriage date. Special instructions are required for any Catholic party under 19 years of age.

No date can be set for this marriage. A Civil Marriage License should be obtained two weeks

in advance of marriage. To set a wedding date here at St. Gerald Catholic Church, you must

be a registered parishioner for 3 months.

Religious Formation K-8

We encourage attendance at St. Gerald Catholic School. There the students receive a quality 5-

day elementary program including the teaching of Religion each day along with mass two

times a week and daily prayer. Parents may choose to send their children to the public school.

If so, their children need to be registered in our parish Religious Education Program. Regular

and sustained Religious Formation is a life-long process. But in particular, for our youth, com-

plete preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation is a process

that encompasses the catechetical curriculum in grades 1-8. Parental support at home for their

children's religious formation includes attendance at Sunday Eucharist, prayer at home, and

September 4, 2011 2 Welcome to St. Gerald Parish

9/11: On August 12, the United States

Conference of Catholic Bishops

launched the website The Catholic

Church Remembers, to mark the tenth

anniversary of 9/11. It highlights peo-

ple’s firsthand experiences of pain and hope from the disaster. The site at

http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/september-

11/ includes six video vignettes. It just so happens our Festival Outdoor

Mass will take place on this anniversary date. Let us come together and do

what we do best, ask the Lord to make us peace-makers so that we can bring

the world to peace.

Festival Mass Information: We will be having an outdoor mass at 5:00

pm on Saturday, Sept. 10, probably beginning more like 5:10, at the Lake-

view Parking Lot. Although there will be folding chairs, if you have an

easily portable lawn chair, bring it so we have enough seating. All the kids

are asked to bring blankets so you can sit on them right in front of the altar

area. KC’s will help with parking, traffic and set-up and take down. The

Hog Heaven Pork BarBQ will be held right afterwards in the gym. See the

flyer in the bulletin. Say a prayer for good weather…and if we have great

weather then ya’ll come, ya’hear!!!

SetUp and Practice for Festival Mass: We will be setting up the stage

and getting all the THINGS necessary for mass readied at 10:00 am on Sat-

urday, Sept. 10. So, I need sacristans and KC’s present to get all this ready.

Then at 1:00 pm we will have a rehearsal with all the ministers, just to ori-

ent you so that we don’t have to do all this discussion/instructing right be-

fore mass. So I need all the readers, servers, banner carriers, deacon, ush-

ers/greeters present at this time to help make it all go smoothly. Altar will

be set up in front of the Lakeview Chapel and all THINGS for the mass can

be kept in the lobby of the Chapel until mass time. Procession will leave

the school via the main school entrance, navigate around the crowd to come

from the north to the Altar area.

Confession on Festival Saturday: Confessions will be held as usual 3:00

until 4:30 at 96th and Q. The 5:00 pm Mass will take place at the Lakeview

site.

St. Gerald is Part of the Archdiocese of Omaha and it is Part of the

Universal Church: According to the teachings of the Church dating back

to the Apostles, the fullness of the Church is found when we gather for wor-

ship around the Bishop along with the priests, deacons and religious of that

local church. In this case the phrase ―Local Church‖ refers to the 23 coun-

ties of Northeast Nebraska. As a member of this church we all have one

Pastor, Archbishop Lucas and we have One Shepherd, Jesus Christ. We

share in that fullness to the extent that we participate in ways that stretch us

beyond the boundaries of parish or even identity with a church building.

When Archbishop Lucas comes for a mass here at St. Gerald we find our-

selves built up because we see more clearly our linkage to the Apostles who

were given responsibility to ―preach the Gospel to all nations…‖. This link-

age is made even more effective when we gather with the Holy Father in

Rome or in other locations around the world, like World Youth Day in Ma-

drid. If we had to survive on our own without that linkage we would even-

tually fragment into many different sects and beliefs. The purpose of a pas-

tor is to help the parish grow in the true faith, excel in virtue, and pray ac-

cording to the practice of whole Catholic Church. We have invited the Afri-

can Community to join us at Lakeview for our Festival Outdoor mass—The

church is larger than Ralston and it has a rich and varied history coupled

with much suffering and persecution. We can stretch a bit when the music

sung at mass helps us to see ourselves rooted in that Universal Church

which is rich in spirituality. If we were to incorporate a song in Latin into

our Liturgies, like the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei), we are reminded of that

tongue that sang praises to God for centuries, a Church with a long history.

Our parish was especially generous to the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal:

helping to serve the needs to the larger church. When

Dave Garland is honored at the Annual Education Dinner

we see once again that our Church is much bigger than St.

Gerald. And we are not belittled, we are built up. Singers,

You are Invited: You are invited to participate in the

Archdiocesan Chorale 2011-2012 season. These choirs are

comprised of singers from parishes in the Archdiocese of

Omaha, who gather to prepare for the Episcopal liturgies

with the Archbishop of Omaha throughout the year. These

liturgies include the Mandation of Lectors and Commis-

sioning of EMHCs, the celebration of Marriage Anniver-

saries, Diaconal Ordination (Permanent), Rite of Election,

Diaconal Ordination (Transitional) and Presbyteral Ordina-

tion. The rehearsals for these liturgies occur in the weeks

prior to the celebration. Episcopal liturgies are the fullest

expression of the Church's worship life in a diocese, when

the Archbishop is gathered together with the members of

the Church. Most of these liturgies occur at Saint Cecilia

Cathedral; a few occur in Saint Mary Church in Norfolk.

Please visit http://archomaha.org/pastoral/worship/

musicministry/choir.html for an urban and rural schedule.

If you would like to participate, please complete the partici-

pation forms found at this website and return to Dr. Marie

Rubis Bauer via fax 402.558.1325, email merubisbau-

[email protected] or regular mail: Saint Cecilia Institute

for Sacred Liturgy, Music and the Arts, 3900 Webster

Street, Suite 200, Omaha, NE 68131.

Francis Cardinal Arinze is coming to Omaha in Septem-

ber. From Nigeria, Africa, Cardinal Arinze is well-traveled,

well-educated, and well-prepared to give faith-inspiring,

thought-provoking presentations to the people of our arch-

diocese. Hosted by the Pro Sanctity Movement, there will

be several opportunities to meet with him. For more details,

followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a

prayerful rosary procession to the abortion facility on Mis-

sion Street under the supervision of the Bellevue Police

Department. A reception will be held in the basement of St.

Mary’s Church afterwards.

A New Tradition in Our School: We are beginning a

Buddy Family ministry in our school. Veteran Families

who volunteer to do so will be paired up with new families

(we have 25 this year) to welcome them, orient them, and

be there to help them get acquainted with other families in

the St. Gerald Family. We begin with a start-up meeting at

the Dorsey Hall at 96th and Q on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Veteran

Families come at 7pm and new families arrive at 7:30 pm.

CCD has a new name. It’s called

Religious Education plus the teachers

are now called Catechists. The cate-

chists are called to this ministry to

teach the children from the public

school system. We are encouraging

our catechists to participate in the cate-

chetical program established by our

Archdiocese to help them deepen their

faith commitment as they continue to

witness and teach the children of our

parish. Each catechist has received

Safe Environment Certification and

will be provided with opportunities to

earn their catechetical levels of train-

ing here at St. Gerald and across the

Archdiocese. A couple of our cate-

chists have already earned their cate-

been trained through other ministries

like Fellowship of Catholic Universi-
