DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR LOUISIANA 110,000 homes were damaged by recent

catastrophic floods in Louisiana from August 12-15. 11,000 residents were forced into shelters by August 15 and 13 people were confirmed dead. This flood is considered the worst natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which affected many of us in the Diocese of Trenton. Gold

In 1898, with imaginations glittering and dreaming of gold, 20 - 30 thousand goldseekers would storm the newly created tent and shack town of Skagway, Alaska, the doorway to the 600 mile trek to the Canadian goldfields in the Yukon. As the National Park Service website says, “Stampeders faced their greatest hardships on the Chilkoot Trail out of Dyea and the White Pass Trail out of Skagway. There were murders and suicides, disease and malnutrition, and deaths from hypothermia, avalanche, and possibly even heartbreak. The Chilkoot Trail was the toughest on men be-cause pack animals could not be used easily on the steep slopes leading to the pass. Until tramways were built late in 1897 and early 1898, the stampeders had to carry everything on their backs” (Having hiked it 3 years ago, I can assure you it’s quite difficult).

There is a famous photo of the “Golden Staircase” leading over Chilkoot Pass in 1898 and into Canada. That long black line is actually a long line of men.

It was with this in mind that someone, hearing this

Sunday’s Gospel, painted the inside of St. Therese Church in Skagway, Alaska. If a picture is worth a thou-sand words, than this painting does the call of disciple-ship justice. Following Jesus is an all-consuming vocation. The gold rushers were willing to leave much behind on the chance of rocky gold. What about us for the gold-fields of heaven?

In Christ,

(Go Vikings!)

MUSIC NOTES from Lou’s Desk 732-295-3630 Ext 36

Here it is! Labor Day weekend has arrived. This weekend we say farewell to all our summer visitors, and thank them for coming to our parish community to worship with us. We thank you for gracing us with your voices and contributing to the congregational participation here in our parish. We wish you all a safe trip back to the “North Country.” We hope to see you next year.

At the same time, we morph from extraordi-nary times to ordinary time. Next weekend we welcome back the Traditional Choir, and the Harvest Folk Choir as we begin a new season of making joyful noises unto the Lord in the form of music. A reminder to all our choir members that rehearsals will be starting up this week for both the Harvest and traditional choirs on their regu-larly scheduled days and times. We hope all of you had a very safe and happy summer. We look forward to your return.

RRELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION 732-295-3630 x 35

“Some Christians think they are able to do with-out ... a constant spiritual effort because they do not heed the urgency of confronting themselves with the truth of the Gospel. So as not to disturb their way of living, they attempt to empty and make innocuous words such as: ‘Love your ene-mies, do good to those who hate you’. But these words, if taken seriously, demand a radical con-version.” – Pope Saint John Paul II

Faith at Home: What forms our thoughts and con-science? Who do we follow and why? Do we try to “keep up” with the latest celebrities and their opinions, likes and example? Are our minds formed by the secular news agencies? The more we know Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church, the more we are formed in the truth and the more we will be at odds with our secular culture. Where does my family stand?

Religious Education 2016-2017: Begins next week! Please pray for all those who come to us, children and adults alike, in order to meet Jesus Christ and form a personal relationship with Him. See CCD schedules under the Religious Ed tab at saintmartha.net.

Catechists Still Needed: Training, lesson plans, and all materials are provided.

Grade Day Time Needed 3 Sun 9:00am -10:15am 1 Catechist 6 Sun 9:00am -10:15am 1 Catechist

Please join us in praying for faith-filled men and women who will share their time, talent and joy to help our young disciples grow closer to Jesus.

We thank the 63 generous men and women who have already volunteered to minister as cate chists and aides for the coming year. Please pray for them and for the children they will serve.

YOUTH MINISTRY

They are available from me at the office and many of our youth. We will have a weekend coming up where they will be sold after Masses. We will ask youth and families to sign up to help sell them.
