Colin & Lorraine Lang’s 1981 Sigma Sedan
I had sold my MGB and was looking to purchase another vehicle, but
the other vehicle was sold before I was able to go through with the
deal. Then a 1981 Sigma was advertised in Crank Talk, and the late
Ray McKay was the owner. The Sigma was on historical registration,
and the price was right and so I purchased the car.
The Sigma was purchased new on the 27th May 1981 by Samuel Gill
of Bensley Street Port Pirie, from Wandearah Motors.
Ray McKay purchased the vehicle in 2015 (Mr Gill passed away and
his wife contacted Ray to see if he wold like to purchase the car). Ray
did not use the car on many occasions because he owned several
others and it only travelled several hundred kms in the time Ray had
it. Ray decided to sell the car and this is when I become the next
owner.
The Sigma over its life has been well looked after and is in very
original condition and was service as required by Wandearah Motors.
I have done very little to the Sigma new exhaust and brake pads.
Over the last twelve months we have been on many club runs in the
Sigma, won Best car for the 1980 and over at the 2016 PADARC Rally.

Hello Members,
Another month has passed by. The Crystal Brook Show was well attended
despite the $5 vehicle entrance fee (Which was not always charged). This
month has seen the sale of Clem Smith’s Collection of vehicles which saw an
E49 Charger sell for well over $100,000.
At the previous general meeting a motion was passed that one Club Name
Tag/Badge be paid for by the Club per membership (Including Family
members). There will be a Spread-sheet that will be required to be filled in as
to people’s names (for correct spelling). Please fill this out when it is available
to ensure your tag is correct. The club has some good runs coming up. I hope
to see as many of you there as can make it
At a “Special” Rally meeting which was called, it was decided that we would
have a biennial Rally next year. I will be the Rally Director, and Glenys Collins
will be the Secretary. Other positions still to be filled.
Next Rally Meeting is September 14th. Please attend if interested.

After Henry Fords refusal
to alter his Model Ts to
incorporate some of the

refinements the brothers
announced they would
build a car of their own.
By 1914, Horace had
created the new four-
cylinder Dodge Model 30.
Marketed as a slightly more upscale competitor to the ubiquitous Ford Model T, it
pioneered or made standard many features later taken for granted: all-steel body
construction (the vast majority of cars worldwide still used wood-framing under steel
panels, though Stoneleigh and BSA used steel bodies as early as 1911);12-volt electrical
system (6-volt systems would remain the norm until the 1950s); 35 horsepower (versus
the Model T's 20), and sliding-gear transmission (the best-selling Model T would retain
an antiquated planetary design until its demise in 1927). As a result of this, and the
brothers' well-earned reputation for the highest quality truck, transmission and motor
parts they made for other successful vehicles, Dodge Brothers cars were ranked at
second place for U.S. sales as early as 1916. That same year, Henry Ford decided to stop
paying stock dividends to finance the construction of his new River Rouge complex. This
led the Dodges to file suit to protect their annual stock earnings of approximately one
million dollars, leading Ford to buy out his shareholders; the Dodges were paid some
US$25 million.
Also in 1916, the Dodge Brothers' vehicles won acclaim for durability while in service
with the U.S. Army's Pancho Villa Expedition into Mexico.One notable instance was in
May when the 6th Infantry received a reported sighting of Julio Cárdenas, one of Villa's
most trusted subordinates. Lt. George S. Patton led ten soldiers and two civilian guides in
three Dodge Model 30 touring cars to conduct a raid at a ranch house in San Miguelito,
Sonora. During the ensuing firefight the party killed three men, of whom one was
identified as Cárdenas. Patton's men tied the bodies to the hoods of the Dodges,
returning to headquarters in Colonia Dublán and an excited reception from US
newspapermen.
Dodge Brothers cars continued to rank second place in American sales in 1920. However,
the same year, tragedy struck as John Dodge was felled by pneumonia in January. His

With the loss of both founders, the Dodge Brothers Company passed into the hands of the
brothers' widows, who promoted long-time employee Frederick Haynes to the company
presidency. During this time, the Model 30 was evolved to become the new Series 116
(though it retained the same basic construction and engineering features). However,
throughout the 1920s Dodge gradually lost its ranking as the third best-selling automobile
manufacturer, slipping down to seventh in the U.S. market.
Dodge Brothers emerged as a leading builder of light trucks. They also entered into an
agreement whereby they marketed trucks built by Graham Brothers of Evansville, Indiana.
The three Graham brothers would later produce Graham and Graham automobiles.
Stagnation in development was becoming apparent, however, and the public responded by
dropping Dodge Brothers to fifth place in the industry by 1925. That year, the Dodge
Brothers company was sold by the widows to the well-known investment group Dillon,
Read & Co. for no less than US$146 million (at the time, the largest cash transaction in
history).
Dillon, Read & Co. offered non-voting stock on the market in the new Dodge Brothers, Inc.,
firm, and along with the sale of bonds was able to raise $160 million, reaping a $14 million
(net) profit. All voting stock was retained by Dillon, Read. Frederick Haynes remained as
company head until E.G. Wilmer was named board chairman in November, 1926. Wilmer
was a banker with no auto experience and Haynes remained as president. Changes to the
car, save for superficial things like trim levels and colours, remained minimal until 1927,
when the new Senior six-cylinder line was introduced. The former four-cylinder line was
kept on, but renamed the Fast Four line until it was dropped in favour of two lighter six-
cylinder models (the Standard Six and Victory Six) for 1928.
On October 1, 1925, Dodge Brothers, Inc., acquired a 51% interest in Graham Brothers,
Inc., for $13 million and the remaining 49% on May 1, 1926. The three Graham brothers,
Robert, Joseph and Ray, assumed management positions in Dodge Brothers before
departing early in 1927 Despite all this, Dodge Brothers' sales had already dropped to
seventh place in the industry by 1927, and Dillon, Read began looking for someone to take
over the company on a more permanent basis. Eventually Dodge was sold to Chrysler

Waikerie Hit and Miss Rally 12 and 13 August.
This year I decided that I would attend the Hit and
Miss Rally, as I haven’t been for about 8 years. The
Rally is held at Benson Park, a farm-stay property on
the east side of Waikerie. Entrants could camp in the
bush setting over the weekend.
I had to attend a funeral in Gawler Friday morning, so I
headed straight from there rather than return home.
Upon arrival and setting up my 2 New Ways (the only
ones there) and pump jack, as a Booleroo Steam and Traction Display, Barney Graham and
Allan Larcombe arrived to set the PADARC display up. Barney and Allan had 5 engines
between them.
The Rally started Saturday morning, and there was a large assortment of stationary
engines there (around 100), with some very interesting setups, and some rare engines.
About 60 tractors were entered, with a feature this year on 100 years of Fordson. Geoff
Nicholls entered his OTA Garden Tractor in the tractor category, (arriving Saturday
morning.) Some of the tractors were also entered in the Tractor Pull event. There was also
a few steam exhibits including a Fowler Traction Engine that was used to winch the
tractor pull sled back to the start after each tractor pull. Classic Cars were on display also,
Barry Treloar made the trip over for the day in the
Mercedes. There was even a Military Display with
an old Jeep and Tank etc.
Throughout the day different events were held,
including axe handle making, wood cutting with
chainsaws, crosscut saws and drag saws, and
shearing demonstrations. There was even a
Clydesdale which gave ploughing demonstrations.
Different displays were also setup by Waikerie Club Members showing different types of
hand tools, shotgun cartridges, models etc. There was even a large pond setup for remote
control boats.
Saturday night tea was put on by caterers for entrants. A 2 course meal. This was held in a
large open shed, and as the night went on it got quite cold, so most people stood around
the bonfire and socialized. Sunday was the same as Saturday, except the Riverland Car Club
attended as one of their runs with quite a few vehicles. After lunch the trophy
presentation was held, then people packed up and headed home.

COUNTRY FAIR GLADSTONE GOAL SEPTEMBER 23rd
We are all going inside goal through main gate to the left. There is a main grass area,
the engines are to go right down to the left corner & then we will line up across the
whole area with the cars. This will be a good show, there will be over fifty stalls
with entertainment jumping castle etc. for the kids. I do hope we can put on a good
display we need all our members from both sides of the ranges to get there early.

THE WORLD’S FIRST INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. Continued
The de Rivaz engine was a pioneering reciprocating engine
designed and developed from 1804 by the Franco-Swiss
inventor Isaac de Rivaz. The engine has claim to be the world's
first internal combustion engine.
The explosion of the hydrogen gas fuel drove the piston freely up
the vertically mounted cylinder, storing the energy by lifting the
heavy piston to an elevated position. The piston returned under
its own weight and engaged a ratchet that connected the piston rod to a pulley. This
pulley was in turn attached to a drum around which a rope was wound. The rope's other
end was attached to a second drum on the vehicles front wheels. The weight of the piston
during its return down the cylinder was enough to turn the drums and move the vehicle.
When the return stroke was over, the ratchet allowed the top drum to disconnect from
the piston rod ready for the next powered lift of the piston. Isaac’s first experimental
vehicle was named The Charette.
In 1813 Rivaz built a much larger experimental vehicle he called the Grand Char
Mecanique. This was 6 meters long, equipped with wheels of two meters in diameter and
weighed almost a ton. The cylinder was 1.5 meters long and the piston had a stroke of
97 cm. The explosive gas mixture used was now composed of about 2 litres of coal
gas and 10 to 12 litres of air. In the Swiss town of Vevey the machine, was loaded with
700 pounds of stone and wood together with four men and ran for 26 meters on a slope
of about 9% at a speed of 3 km/h. With each stroke of the piston, the vehicle moved
ahead from four to six meters.
Few of his contemporaries took his work seriously. The French Academy of Sciences
argued that the internal combustion engine would
never rival the performance of the steam engine.
Around 1985 the Giannada Automobile
Museum , Switzerland produced two
reconstructions of the Charette, a model about 50 cm
long and a larger working one about 2 meters long.
The working model used air pressure to simulate the
gas/chemical explosion. On one occasion this car
moved about 100 meters in front of the museum as

Wedding Anniversaries are being celebrated in September by Faith & Malcolm
Wauchope, Anne-Marie & Michael Handcock & Sandra & Garry McMahon. It’s a Golden
Wedding for Faith & Malcolm on the 25th, Anne-Marie & Michael celebrate 40 years on
the 17th & for Sandra & Garry its their 35th on the 9th.

There are no adult birthdays listed for this month but in the Fitzsimons household Brodie
is turning 21, Happy Birthday Brodie.
PADARC junior member Eva McPherson celebrated her
first birthday with family & friends last month. Her large
birthday cake is as big as the smile on Eva’s face.

Hospitalised during last month & under observation for his heart was Barry Treloar.
Happily he is back to his old self & is feeling much better. Colin Lang also joined the short
stayers in hospital, but he too is now sparking on all six. Coughs & colds are still with us &
we must avoid influenza at all costs. Not well as we go to print are Maureen Pollard &
Jeanette Button. Jason Dangerfield, Norma Greenfield & John Sherman are on the mend
& to any other members feeling miserable with these winter mornings sick or injured we
hope you shortly will be feeling ok.

CLEM SMITH AUCTION
On Sunday August 20, I left home at about 9:30am and went to Mallala to see the auction
of Clem Smith’s cars. I had a look at all the cars and got a catalogue with photos of all the
vehicles. I sat in all the older model cars to see what it would feel like, it was magnificent. I
sat in the back and later the front of the 1927 Stearns Knight, of which there is only one
other that exists in the world. The car is so big inside, you could almost fit a football team.
All the other cars I sat in had nice upholstery and leather seats. I found it awkward getting
out of the left hand drive vehicles, but I managed. You did not have to go outside to see the
cars parked out there, because they displayed them on screens in the big shed, which also
estimated their value. The auction started at 2:30 and finished at 4:30. There were 36 cars
and a few miscellaneous items to be sold. Some of the prices were:
1935 Railton Fairmile Drop Head Coupe, very rare, 2 or 3 in Australia, estimated value
$90,000—$120,000 - Sold for $82,500
1952 Fiat 500 Topolino Type C, value $6000 to $10,000—Sold for $10,000
1939 Willys Overland Model 3D Sedan, value $22,000 to $26,000—Sold for $22,000 1934
Hudson Terraplane 6C Roaster, value $20,000 to $28,000—Sold for $23,000 1929 Hudson
Super Six Pinecone Sedan, value $22,000 to $28,000—Sold for $21,000 1938 Hudson
Terraplane Supermodel 76, left hand Drive, value $18,000 to $20,000—Sold for $14,000.
The most expensive cars sold were:
1972 Chrysler Valiant RT Charger E38 Coupe, valued at $120,000 to $150,000—Sold for
$120,000.
1952 Hudson Hornet club Sport Coupe Model 7V, left hand drive, valued at $38,000 to
$44,000 – Sold for $48,000.
My favourite car was the 1927 Stearns Knight 6A Series Sedan. The only one known to exist,
valued at $100,000 to $140,000—Failed to meet the reserve, and was turned in, it only
reached $85,000.
The 1938 Hudson Terraplane Special Racing Car that Clem Smith used to race at Rolley
Park Speedway, valued at $4000 to $8000—Sold for $14,500.
A lot of these vehicles were sold on the internet and some on the telephone. It was a great
sale, one of the best I have been to. A lovely day.

Crystal Brook Show 2017
Six cars met at the clubroom, we left at 9.30am & travelled to Crystal Brook. We
entered the show ground at the Eastern entrance not all attending were charged the
entrance fee. There was a good line up of vehicles on display & perfect day
weatherwise. All members attending had a good day. There were also a few visiting
vehicles from other clubs as well.

A couple of dear old Irish Jokes that landed in my mail. An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over. "So," says the cop to the driver, where have ya been?" " Why, I've been to the pub of course," slurs the drunk. " Well," says the cop, "it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening." "I did all right," the drunk says with a smile. "Did you know," says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, "that a few streets back, your wife fell out of your car?" "Oh, thank heavens," sighs the drunk. "For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf." Mary Clancy goes up to her Minister after His Sunday morning service, and she's in tears. He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?" She says, "Oh, Reverend, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night”. The minister says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp. "What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender. " Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy. "That little mongrel, O'Conner," says Sean, "he couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand." "That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it." " Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself. Didn't you have something in your hand?" That I did," said Paddy. "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight".

NATIONAL VETERAN VEHICLE RALLY Clare 24-30 SEP 2017
On Wednesday 27th there will be an opportunity for the general public to view
approximately 150 veterans on display at the Clare oval. In the evening there will be a
spectacular lights parade with all entrants in period dress. Unfortunately this wonderful
opportunity clashes with our cities Smelters Picnic.

Vehicle & Motorcycles, lodge entries at Centre Radiators. Nomination fee $5.00. All
nomination fees donated to charity . This is a non-profit event. Food &
drink stalls present on the day.

NOVEMBER 11th Brinkworth Ute & Bike Muster (PADARC invited) $20. entry proceeds
in support Peace of Mind Foundation...those living with brain cancer.
