September 2014
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In September things really start rolling. Children return to school, sports, and homework. Vacation season
winds down, and we start thinking about autumn leaves and the coming holiday season. That’s when the Knights’
charitable and community events really pick up.
By now, we already have had one football game at the Air Force Academy under our belt. Parking cars before
the game has been our principal fund-raiser for the past several years, and it has enabled us to support our Parish,
community, Life Network, the Ultrasound Initiative, and many other worthy needs. It is also an activity that pro-
vides fun and social interaction, with a tailgate at each game.
This month, we also kick off the Football Frenzy and the Campaign for the Intellectually Disabled. Football
Frenzy supports the Colorado State Council, and also puts a little into our charity piggy bank. PLUS it gives football
fans some entertainment during the pigskin season and 90 chances to win.
The Intellectually Disabled Campaign, AKA Tootsie Rolls, enables us to support some worthy local charities.
Last year, it was Roundup Fellowship, Zach’s Place, and Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Academy. The Colorado
State Council uses their share to support charities such as Special Olympics. When you participate in this drive,
you know that all proceeds go to helping deserving individuals. Last year, 35 Knights and ladies took part out of
about 140 who could have. 25% is too small a number. Almost everyone can spare a couple hours once a year for
charity. Pay it forward, my brothers and sisters!
Another big charity event, and a fun one, is our Annual Benefit, Monte Carlo Style. Last year we split about
$4500 between Care and Share and Habitat for Humanity. This year, we plan to support The Home Front Cares
and Council 9993 charities. There will be poker, blackjack, roulette and your other favorite games in a fun, safe
environment. Your help will make this a big success to support Council charities, as well as our military. See the
article for more information.
With the Operation Renovation nearly complete, our monthly pancake breakfasts will resume in October. Many
of you enjoy feeding our flock those yummy cakes and sausage, so be sure to watch for Greer’s summons, and join
in!
Then comes the holidays – a time when most of us are preparing for family feasts and festivities. But not all in
our community are so fortunate. Saint Patrick Parish is always one of the most giving during this time, with the An-
gel Tree, Holiday food baskets and more. Help will be needed to pick up food, sort it into baskets, and deliver.
Many Knights already participate, and I am sure many of us will help again this year. It is also a great opportunity
to get the whole family involved, and teach our children about the joy of helping others.
Of course, during the holy Christmas season, we aim to keep our focus on the Christ Child, the one for whom
the holiday is named. To that end, we will be selling religious Christmas cards and car magnets to remind folks
“Keep Christ in Christmas.” If you have those magnets already, it’s time to get them out!
So you see, my brothers and sisters – at this time of year, there is something for everyone. Pick something that
warms your heart, and do it. Is it feeding the needy? Or cooking and serving our hungry St. Patrick family? Do you
enjoy giving a child a Tootsie Roll, or dealing blackjack, or being outdoors at the Air Force Academy? If you can’t do
those things, you can join us at Mass or pray for our hurting members and their families. Together, we can get it
done!

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH
By Ron Krom
Respect Life Sunday is the first Sunday in October. However, the next 40 Days for Life Vigil starts
September 24th and goes until November 2nd. 40 Days for Life is a proven, peaceful, pro-life effort that has
spared 8973 babies from abortion, caused 101 abortion workers to quit, and resulted in 56 closed abortion
centers. Volunteers have prayed and fasted during these vigils in 539 cities across 24 nations. They pray and
offer loving support to parents in crisis. They do not judge, condemn, or shout anti-abortion slogans.
The vigil here in Colorado Springs takes place on the sidewalk along Centennial Blvd, near the Planned
Parenthood facility at 3480 Centennial Blvd. The prayer vigil goes from 6 AM to 6 PM each day. Father Bill
Carmody will celebrate the opening Mass at 12 PM on September 24th. There will also be a kick-off non-
denominational prayer service at 10 AM on September 26th.
More information is available at the web site http://www.40daysforlife.com/coloradosprings .
There is also a link to choose and sign up for specific days and times. The goal is to have people praying dur-
ing the entire day each day, especially on the days when abortions are performed. You can also contact Ron
Krom for further details.
There’s another piece of good news. Life Network is opening another pregnancy center at 3925 Centennial
Blvd., just ½ mile from Planned Parenthood. That makes it easy to direct parents who want an ultrasound
and other assistance. Volunteers will be given business cards and information to hand out to those who want
it.
Watch for other local events to celebrate and affirm life. There is usually a prayer chain along Centennial
Blvd or Academy Blvd during this time. There may be other prayer gatherings. Fr. Bill Carmody will continue
to celebrate Mass on the sidewalk near Planned Parenthood every Friday at 9 AM.
Continue to pray for an end to abortion and for our country to protect all people at all stages of life. The
EWTN website has Pope Benedict XVI’s “Prayer for the Unborn” at http://www.ewtn.com/
Devotionals/prayers/b16_unborn.htm. The rosary is also a great option.
Vivat Jesus!
“Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to
live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” Pope Francis

DON’T WAIT, ACT TODAY
When you’re family is hungry, you see that this need is taken care of quickly. You don’t put it off until tomorrow; you act immediately to the best of your ability. As a provider to your wife and
children, your responsibilities are great and your time is spread thin. It is easy to forget important
tasks or let them slip to the backburner for later.
Everything, including your health, can change in the blink of an eye. Don’t put off today what
can’t wait until tomorrow. As your professional Knights of Columbus agent, I urge you to make
securing life insurance for you and your family a top priority.
It is my fraternal obligation to make sure that every member has the opportunity to protect his family with the Order’s top-rated insurance products. I’ll work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is what
they needed the most.
Your Knights of Columbus insurance program is second to none. As the premier safety net for Catholic families for more than 128 years, our insurance program makes me proud. But I’m also concerned that too many of our brother
Knights have not yet looked into the needs of their family. I suspect that, for many of them, life insurance has drifted to
the backburner until tomorrow. Don’t be one of them; move your insurance needs to the forefront today.

Ladies Auxiliary News for September Fran Krom
The next meeting for the Ladies Auxiliary is September 24 at 6:30 in the Bishop’s Room. It will be good to catch up on news from the summer. The Social Gathering features an end of summer menu with Hot Dogs/Chili and all the fixings—Yummy!
Our Ladies Auxiliary is dedicated to supporting the men’s organization and providing a social venue for women. In addition, we have been able to provide contributions to local charities, including the Marian House, Sweet Dreams, Partners in Housing, pro-life efforts, Los Pobres of Pueblo, St. Patrick Food Pantry, St. Pat-rick Faith Formation, St. Patrick Library, St. Patrick Kitchen, Renovation Fund Drive, and others. Our monetary contributions are generally modest but always appreciated by the recipients.
Our next fund raiser is the Bake Sale on September 28-29. Pies, cookies, and other baked goods never net a true worth when time and cost of ingredients are considered. However, it is a gesture of selflessness to contribute and participate in the sale.
I encourage all the members of the Council and Assembly to support the Ladies this month. Baked goods can be delivered to the Fitzpatrick Room before each Mass. Come sample our tasty products on the weekend and talk to the Ladies. (P.S. I’ll be making pies again)
AIR FORCE FOOTBALL HAS BEGUN!

Dr. Richard “Sir Rick” Losey
July 2014, Knight of the Month
Council 9993
Sir Rick Losey is recognized as July Knight of the Month for his active and dedi-cated service to the members of St. Patrick Parish, Council 9993, and Assembly
3049.
Sir Rick joined the Catholic Church as a member of the St. Patrick RCIA Class of
2012. He immediately became active in the parish community. He served as sponsor
to two candidates in the RCIA Class of 2013-2014. He also joined immediately in the weekly breakfast gathering of the That Man is You formation and fellowship pro-
gram that meets at 6:00 am on Thursdays.
He joined the Knights of Columbus in August 2013 and advanced to the 4th De-
gree and membership in Assembly 3049 on May 18, 2014. He has become an active
participant and leader in the Council and Assembly. He was the chairman of the very successful July 29 Knights of Columbus $2 Tuesday at the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. He coordinated an excellent tail-
gate—but did allow the game to get rained out after the tailgate was complete. He was also the grill coordinator of the
June 20 Council Family Picnic attended by over 120 Knights and family members. He also assists with the monthly
pancake breakfast and with Council support of parish functions such as the annual parish picnic.
Sir Rick was elected to serve as the Council’s Worthy Chancellor for the 2014-2015 year and Assembly 3049 Outer Sentinel for 2014-2015. Married for 33 years, he is the parent of a son and daughter, and enjoys two young grandchil-
dren. Sir Rick served in the United States Air Force.
Thank you, Sir Rick for your service, fellowship, and leadership!

FOOTBALL SEASON IS HERE!
Don’t miss this chance to make watching pro football profitable. With the purchase of every ticket is the perfect excuse
to make Sunday football “mandatory.” The way it works is simple. Tickets are sold for $10.00, of which the council will
receive $2 back as a rebate. The person purchasing the ticket fills out the stub to the right. For more information, see last
year’s ticket, attached to this email. The detached right side and the money are returned to the knight doing the selling
and eventually to me. Then, the person who bought the ticket just watches football. It’s that easy.
Each game ticket has four (4) different teams each week. If your four (4)
teams score the most or least points in any week, you are a winner! In addi-
tion to the football frenzy game ticket, each purchase comes with a discount
card for participating retailers. See the website below or the attached adver-
tisement for more information.

No action is necessary in order to
win, as winning contact information
is logged when the purchaser fills
out the right side of the ticket. How-
ever, if you just can’t wait, you can
check the website at the end of the
week for the latest winners.
I am the point of contact for our
council and I am here to make the
sale and purchase of this year’s tick-
ets as easy as possible. Please reply
to this message with the number of tickets you would like to take from me to sell, or the number you would like to pur-
chase for yourself, and a convenient time and place for me to drop them off. I expect to make several deliveries this
week. This is an excellent time to recall your friends and relatives who have asked for similar consideration with their
kids’ fundraisers. But this time, it’s a pitch that a dad can really get behind!
If you have any questions, would like more tickets, or would like to give back stubs and money, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

The Bottom Line - "$upporting Our Good Works "
What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3rd Degree Council [9993] and 4th Degree
Assembly [3049].
With the close of August, the end of summer is clearly in view. September will see the return of social meetings,
USAFA parking, and tootsie rolls. Looking back over August, though, we are definitely off to a great start for fall.
Council 9993 started a new Fundraising project, Reloadable King Soopers Gift Cards and the first month was a com-
plete success. The Council has already received its first profit, $336 for 1 month. Note that this income cost the mem-
bers of the council zero dollars and zero cents. Please see last month’s newsletter or Herman Jasper for more informa-
tion.
In addition to King Soopers, we continue to receive dues money. I would like to take a moment to thank Herman Jasper,
immediate past Grand Knight, and Paul Miller, our Financial Secretary, for working so hard on bringing our members
with past dues up to date. Payment of dues helps pay for the Council’s administrative costs, so that all of our fundraising
can go to worthy causes. In the month of August, the council paid for its website with $150. Also, with the new Frater-
nal Year, we paid our per capita dues to the Supreme and State Councils, $566.10 and $688.75, respectively. This
covers costs for culture of life initiatives, advertising the faith, and the administrative costs at supreme and ceremonials,
the Knights call, and the administrative costs at state.
As promised, a recap of our semiannual audit follows: In a 6 month period from Jan-Jun, the Council received
~$16,000. In that same time period, the Council paid out ~$19,000, including ~$3,000 in profit from the Legacy Fund,
received in the previous 6 month period. Approximately $2,500 of the expenses fell in the categories of council opera-
tion (postage, name badges, food, etc…) or dues to higher organizations (state and supreme). The rest of the expenditure
went to raising funds or directly to the worthy charities we support (recapped monthly here).
If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular
business meeting or feel free to contact me directly.
Faithfully yours, Taylor Lilly Treasurer, Council 9993 Purser, Assembly
