“ It’s the best show we’ve aired in the past five years. Yes, even better than Downton Abbey.”

— Scott DwYer, KQeD PUBLIc teLevISIon Program DIrector

Last Tango in Halifax

L. to r.: Caroline (Sarah Lancashire), Celia (Anne Reid) Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Gillian (Nicola Walker).

childhood sweethearts alan and celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other a second time when they are reunited on the Internet after nearly 60 years. as their lives collide, the couple laments what might have been as they begin a life-affirming journey together. while their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family — a family with baggage. alan and celia’s

daughters, whose dysfunctional lives bring drama at every turn, would never dream of getting in the way of their parents’ happiness. But somehow they just can’t help themselves. the premiere of Last Tango in Halifax ranked within BBc one’s top ten highest-rated drama series in 2012, attracting 7.3 million viewers. a second season has already been commissioned in the United Kingdom.

A critically acclaimed series about romance and second chance.Full of zesty humor, great characters and glorious dialogue, it’s about timeless love in a modern setting.

Says executive producer nicole Shindler, “‘what if ’ is a question that haunts all of us, but in the hands of Derek Jacobi and anne reid, and the larger cast of Last Tango in Halifax, it becomes a hugely thoughtful and funny look at love and loss and hope.”

go behind-the-scenes at local Bay area labs, follow breaking discoveries, explore obscure science collections and travel to unique locations to examine the natural world with Science on the SPot (SotS), KQeD Science’s original web video series. this fall, discover the secret life of wild pumas in the Santa

cruz mountains as the SotS team joins the Santa cruz Puma Project team to track, capture and collar a wild puma. the collars provide gPS and other information to learn more about how the big cats’ behavior changes when they venture near human-populated areas. next up, travel with the SotS team north of Sacramento, deep into the Plumas national Forest’s Butterfly valley, to discover one of the most unique hunters of the plant kingdom and

witness how the cobra lily uses deception and patience to trick unsuspecting insect prey into its highly specialized pitcher traps. and just in time for Halloween, join the SotS team as they discover something strange and unsettling that’s happening to Bay area honeybees.

SotS takes you into San Francisco State University’s entomology lab to study a fascinating species of fly that’s been recently discovered to parasitize honey bees, causing the bees to take on bizarre nocturnal behaviors. Look for these new SotS videos (six to ten minutes each) starting in mid- September and into october, and check out the Science on the SPot video collection. kqed.org/sots

The following is an exerpt from one of MindShift’s most popular posts so far this year.

For a quarter of an hour, the investigators from the lab of Larry rosen, a psychology professor at california State University–Dominguez Hills, marked down once a minute what the students were doing as they studied. a checklist on the form included: reading a book, writing on paper, typing on the computer — and also using email, looking at Facebook, engaging in instant messaging, texting, talking on the phone and surfing the web. Sitting unobtrusively at the back of the room, the observers counted the number of windows open on the students’ screens. although the students had been told at the outset that they should “study something important, including homework, an upcoming examination or project, or reading a book for a course,” it wasn’t long before their attention drifted. Says rosen,“It really seems that they could not go for 15 minutes without engaging their devices,” adding, “It was kind of scary, actually.”

concern about young people’s use of technology is nothing new, of course. But rosen’s study is part of a growing body of research focused on a very particular use of technology: media multitasking while learning. David meyer, a psychology professor at the University of michigan who has studied the effects of divided attention on learning, takes a firm line on the brain’s ability to multitask: “Under most conditions, the brain simply cannot do two complex tasks at the same time. It can happen only when the two tasks are both very simple and when they don’t compete with each other for the same mental resources. an example would be folding laundry and listening to the weather report on the radio. that’s fine. But listening to a lecture while texting, or doing homework and being on Facebook — each of these tasks is very demanding, and each of them uses the same area of the brain, the prefrontal cortex.” Young people think they can perform two challenging tasks at once, meyer says, but “they are deluded.” It’s difficult for anyone to properly evaluate how well his or her own mental processes are operating, he points out, because most of these processes are unconscious. and, meyer adds, “there’s nothing magical about the brains of so-called digital natives that keeps them from suffering the inefficiencies of multitasking. they may like to do it, they may even be addicted to it, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s far better to focus on one task from start to finish.”

MindShift: How Does Multitasking Change the Way Kids Learn?

Launched in 2010 by KQED and NPR, MindShift celebrates its third anniversary this year. Edited by Tina Barseghian, the site explores the future of learning in all its dimensions, covering cultural and technology trends, innovations in education, groundbreaking research, education policy and more.

Giving for Tomorrow, Without Paying Today Thank you for your generous member support of KQED. We invite you to consider how you can also help shape the future of public broadcasting and increase your support — without even writing a check. An excellent way to support KQED’s future is to make KQED a beneficiary of any unneeded portion of your retirement plan. When passed on, IRAs and 401Ks can incur significant income and potential estate taxes for heirs. Naming KQED as beneficiary avoids these taxes and helps build our endowment. Or you can include KQED in your estate plan through a bequest in your will or living trust. Both options allow you to maintain control of your assets while increasing your commitment to public broadcasting. For more information about how you can support KQED through your estate plan, please send us the coupon below or contact the Gift Planning department at 415.553.2230 or [email protected].

For the most up-to-date schedule information, check kqed.org/radio.

KQED Public Radio’s fall fundraising drive is scheduled for September 4–21.

Radiolab — Now Every Saturday at 1pm

each week, Radiolab wrestles with stories that startle and delight, frequently transforming what we thought we knew into mysteries open with possibility. on September 28, in the “23 weeks, 6 days” episode, you’ll hear the gripping story of a couple struggling to make sense of how to navigate their baby’s dramatically premature birth.

their story raises questions that, until recently, no parent had to face. and it contains an entire universe of questions about the lines between life and death, reflex and will, and the confusing tug of war between two basic moral touchstones: doing no harm and doing everything in our power to help.

In addition to adding Radiolab to our weekly lineup, KQED Public Radio has made other schedule changes that go into effect this month. They’re highlighted in the grid on the opposite page.

Radiolab hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich return this month to KQED’s airwaves.

Neal Schon, guitarist for the iconic rock band Journey, saw a YouTube video of the aspiring Filipino singer and flew him to San Francisco to audition for the band. The rest is history. But Pineda’s personal journey had just begun. Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey airs Monday, September 30, at 10pm on KQED 9.
