The 33rd San Francisco Jewish Film Festival returns to the Bay Area July 25 through August 12 with venues in San Francisco, Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Rafael and Oakland. Celebrating “Life Through a Jew(ish) Lens,” SFJFF presents the very best of independent Jewish cinema. sfjff.org

Have a film festival in your living room. Mondays starting at 10pm on KQED 9.

KQED has long been your destination for the best in independent films, with five celebrated series broadcast across our television schedule: the national documentary series POV and Independent Lens, the local series ImageMakers and Truly CA, and the brand-new national KQED production Film School Shorts. “KQED airs more independent programming from a wider variety of sources than any other PBS station,” said KQED Television Program Director Scott Dwyer, who is also the executive producer of ImageMakers and Film School Shorts. “Over the years, KQED’s reputation has built to the point where I get calls from independent filmmakers — local, national and international — for our expertise in distribution and engagement.” From hard-hitting documentaries to quirky comedies, we’ve selected a time on KQED 9 to showcase these contemporary stories. We call it IndieNOW, and it starts at 10pm on Mondays. This month IndieNOW features five compelling new POV documentaries, including a dramatic account of the plight of undocumented foreigners at the Frambois detention center in Geneva, Switzerland, a film (featured on the cover of this month’s On Q) following two of China’s first citizen-reporters as they document the underside of the country’s rapid economic development, and an unprecedented exploration of autism from the point of view of people who have autism.

Do you have ancestors who played an important role in Bay Area history? Did they help manufacture one of the original pairs of Levi jeans? Did they help process immigrants on Angel Island? Were they part of Cesar Chavez’s farm workers movement? Or maybe you’ve heard stories about a special family connection to California history, but you’ve never been sure if they were true. A new PBS series, Genealogy Roadshow, will film in the Bay Area in

July, and KQED and the producers want to learn more about your family’s history and role in shaping our state. If you think you have a significant story to tell or want to explore a genealogical mystery focused on your family, we urge you to apply at kqed.org/grshow. Part detective story, part emotional journey, Genealogy Roadshow combines history, genealogy and science to uncover fascinating stories of diverse Americans. Watch for it this fall on KQED.

The monthly contest especially for On Q readers from The Giveaway — KQED’s blog — offers prizes and opportunities to win free tickets to events around the Bay Area. The answer to the monthly ques- tion is in On Q. Send your answer to [email protected] (please put “On Q”

in the subject line) by July 8, 2013, to be entered to win a cool black canvas #IamKQED bag filled with fun treats. For a chance to win even more prizes, visit The Giveaway (kqed.org/giveaway) and check out the latest contest.

Read On Q and Win!On what night does KQED 9 highlight independent films?

Simplified StructureThe new KQED.org also approaches content differently, offering youmore choice in what you see. There’s now a feature story on top, followed by our latest content, presented in chrono-logical order for easy browsing and exploration. This open approach lets you decided what to read, watch or listen to based on your interest. “Before the redesign, we had so much on the homepage that it made for a cluttered experience,” explains Colleen Wilson, KQED’s executive director of interactive content. “With the new orientation, we give you a place to start with a featured story, and then you have an equal opportunity to browse all the other stories we offer.”

Responsive DesignTo make sure you have the best possible experience, the homepage incorporates responsive design practices. This design principle means that the page adapts its layout to whatever device you are using — smart phone, tablet, laptop computer, or any other mobile or desktop device. However you get to KQED.org, we invite you to come see what sparks your interest.

Instant GratificationThe homepage redesign involves a key shift in KQED’s online strategy, one that enables us to be more attentive to how you’re using our website. On weekends, for example, you’re more likely to look for lifestyle-oriented features, such as recipes, restaurant reviews and activity suggestions from KQED Guides. During the week, we know visitors are most interested in breaking news and analysis. The new design enables us to synchronize the homepage to match your interests and habits so you can find what you want when you want it.

Three key goals of KQED.org homepage redesign• Bring local coverage front and

center, including news, blogs, streaming video, audio and explainers.

• Provide a simplified stream of stories so you can decide for yourself what’s most important.

• Look great on any size screen.

It’s safe to say that even for those of us who aren’t early adopters, digital media is transforming our lives. KQED has more online offerings than ever before, and we redesigned the KQED.org homepage to highlight features and services that make KQED the online destination for the news, arts, science and lifestyle information you need.

All KQED’s science coverage is now easy to find — in one place. Visit the newly redesigned. kqed.org/science

family or own a small business, KQED’s straightforward guide makes the process of traversing this complicated law clearer for Californians. Starting January 1, 2014, most Americans will be required to have health insurance or pay a fine as part of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Whether you love it, hate it or are just plain confused, the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. The 1,000-page law covers a lot of ground, and figuring out which parts of it relate to you can be a challenge, but don’t panic! Talk of the Nation Replacements Offer News, Analysis and ConversationYou may have heard that NPR ceases production of Talk of the Nation at the end of June. In its place, KQED Public Radio has scheduled two excellent news and information programs. We know you’ll miss the important coverage and national conversation that Talk of the Nation offered for more than 20 years, but we also think you’ll appreciate and enjoy KQED’s new midday schedule. Monday through Thursday at 11am listen to Here & Now, co-hosted by broadcast veteran and award-winning filmmaker Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson, who joins the anchor team after several years as a reporter and host for Marketplace. The fast-paced program updates the morning news and includes

important conversations on public policy and foreign affairs, science and technology, the arts, and more. At noon, hear additional national news and analysis on The Takeaway, hosted by public radio innovator John Hockenberry, who invites listeners to learn more and be part of the American dialogue. We’re pleased that NPR will continue to distribute Science Friday with host Ira Flatow. This program is extremely popular with KQED listeners, and it will keep its Friday 11am to 1pm time slot. Here & Now and The Takeaway begin airing Monday, July 1, on KQED Public Radio. We invite you to send your comments about the programs to [email protected].

Travel the Globe from Bhutan to NicaraguaThe seventh season of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope features global adventures both near and far. Across the Pacific, visit Japan’s Ogasawara islands, which are more than 600 miles from the mainland and whose population is composed of people with American roots, and the mountain kingdom of Bhutan (pictured here), a country that measures prosperity by gauging its citizens’ gross national happiness. Closer to home, sample the fun-in-the sun pleasures on hand in Los Cabos, Mexico, and enter into a brave new world of travel in Nicaragua, a country recovered from civil war and ready to thrill visitors with its natural wonders. The first two new episodes of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope air Saturday, July 13 & 27, at 8am on KQED 9.
