The new two-hour documentary The White House: Inside Story opens the doors to America’s most famous address, providing an intimate behind-the-scenes historical tour as told through the first-person stories of members of first families, former employees, historians and members of the press. Through current-day filming combined with stock footage and still photos of past presidents, their families and White House staff, you’ll experience the precision with which the executive mansion operates — as a private home and as a workplace where military and economic decisions shape and affect history. In addition to President Barack Obama and former President Jimmy Carter, the film features new interviews with first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush and Rosalynn Carter reminiscing about their families’ place in the history of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From the Oval Office to the family dining room, through national crises and world wars, the 200-year story of the White House is the story of America.

The White House: Inside Story airs Tuesday, July 12, at 8pm on KQED 9.

A Call to Artists
Before Jon Brooks became the editor of Future of You, KQED’s blog about how emerging technologies are impacting medicine and how an explosion of information is changing the way we manage our health, he launched KQED’s News Fix blog and helped it grow into a major news service. What drew him from one popular KQED property to another? He explained: “There’s a lot of new technology related to health, but also a lot of confusion about what works and doesn’t work. I was excited about taking a closer look at what’s been hyped and what is actually effective.” Future of You doesn’t just report on “gee-whiz, look what you can do now” stories. “We’re trying to focus more on the patient or a would-be patient. We’re asking, ‘Is it effective? Does it work? What does the research say?’” When asked if there was a recent story that stood out or surprised him, Jon was quick to note the Theranos story, which isn’t so much surprising as
Science
KQED and Creative Action Network, a global community of artists and designers harnessing their talents for good, have teamed up to invite Bay Area visual artists and designers to help us create a collection of artwork celebrating the region’s vibrant arts and culture scene. All submitted designs will be available for sale as prints to support their creators and KQED. Select designs will be available as limited edition tote bags for KQED members.

Exploring the Frontiers of Medicine
interesting because of the tension it illustrates between how Silicon Valley works and how health-care company’s development process typically works. “In the startup world,” he explained, “you don’t always have all your ducks in a row. You do it fast and then you go back and make changes. In the biomedical world, you research and publish first. Theranos didn’t publish anything. No one could really figure out how they could do what they said they could do. It was a big leap to take blood from a single finger prick and then perform a multitude of diagnostic tests. And yet, they got a lot of attention and investors…. And then the regulatory apparatus of the county caught up.” In addition to stories on topics such as personalized medicine, virtual reality and neural gaming, keep an eye out for new, original videos and a special info-graphic — like a mini graphic novel — that was still under tight wraps at press time. But we promise it will have been researched and tested before going live!

This grant will fund six online videos and three listening tours, focusing on military families, women and LGBT veterans. If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and plunked down your $1 admission (50¢ for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and his team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. Now, 42 years later, Keillor will be on stage at the Hollywood Bowl on July 1, 2016, for his final appearance as host of the famed radio show. The pro-gram airs Saturday, July 2, at 6pm on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM.
It promises to be an evening of sweet and tender harmonies, along with the comedy, classic sketches and, of course, the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Keillor has gathered together some of his favorite duet partners, including Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan, Heather Masse and Christine DiGial-lonardo — all backed by the Prairie Bowl Band, led by music director and pianist Richard Dworsky. Brand-new episodes of A Prairie Home Companion will launch in October 2016 with new host Chris Thile. Encore episodes, hosted by Keillor, will air on KQED Public Radio until the fall.

In 1960s Britain, an upstanding detective takes on a dangerous world. Award-winning actor Martin Shaw stars as Commander George Gently — an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London’s Scotland Yard to England’s North Country in the mid-1960s.
The fourth season of Inspector George Gently begins airing Friday, July 15, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
