For the past two decades, The California Report’s reporters and producers have dug deep and explored the less-traveled corners of California to have conversations about the issues and personalities that shape the state. Today, 30 public radio stations — from the Mexican border to the Oregon border — contribute to and air KQED’s weekday morning report and Friday news magazine. As The California Report’s Los Angeles bureau chief, Steven Cuevas sometimes interviews famous personalities, however, the most important lesson he’s learned cov-ering California is that “there are scores of people across the state doing astonishing, creative, courageous and downright heroic things that go unseen by 99 percent of the population, but that have a profound influence on local neighborhoods, communities and the state as a whole.” Much of The California Report’s coverage focused on giving a voice to the voiceless. “Our team works hard to find
Chronicling the State’s Storiesthe humanity in big issues,” says Producer/Director Suzie Racho, “like a former felon navigating the world after leaving prison, a mother trying to tend to her kids in the Central Valley without running water, homeless people on L.A.’s skid row talking about how singing at a karaoke night gives them some of their humanity back.” Even in interviews with Californians who are struggling with some of life’s toughest challenges, host-reporter Scott Shafer often sees a hope that is uniquely Californian. “California is a place of second chances,” he notes. “People who didn’t like or accept the chances they had where they lived come here because California inspires and cultivates innovation, reinvention, thinking differently, even eccentricity. I think a common thread is that many people here are resilient, creative and confident. They’re fighters who don’t accept things as they are.” Adds host-reporter Queena Kim, “California has always been a state that embraces big ideas and brings them to life,
and we’ll continue to share stories of the innovations that start in California and spread to the rest of the world.” One of the benefits of covering the state over time is witnessing how people and communities evolve, notes Central Valley Bureau Chief Sasha Khokha. “I’ve been able to witness how the California dream is working. Recently, I interviewed a young woman who’s an advocate for indigenous Oaxacan farmworkers. She said, ‘I remember you! You came into the vineyard where I was working when I was 14 years old and recorded us pruning the vines.’ She is now trilingual, a mom and an emerging leader in her community.” Sharing stories like this, says Sasha, is important. “It helps knit us together as a state, despite Californians’ geographic, economic and cultural differences. We bring context to policy news through stories of real people. The intimacy of their voices helps us understand the complexity of this state we all call home.”
The California Report airs weekdays mornings at 5:51, 6:51 and 8:51 and Fridays at 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 11pm on KQED Public Radio 88.5FM.

On the Road with Driverless CarsOnce the stuff of science fiction, cars that drive themselves are already hitting the streets. With amazing advances in technology, much of it coming out of Silicon Valley, automobiles are about to undergo their biggest revolution in more than 100 years. Find out how self-driving cars are sparking new opportunities — and challenges — on and off the road in QUEST’s new half-hour television special airing on KQED 9, Wednesday, October 28, at 7:30pm.
“There’s a shock you get when seeing the wheel turn on its own while the car is zooming down the highway at 60 miles per hour,” says Sheraz Sadiq, the docu-mentary’s producer. Nine companies, from Google to Mercedes-Benz, already have permits to test self-driving cars on California roads. Sadiq experienced Audi’s prototype self-driving car firsthand, on the highway near the company’s offices in Belmont. In January, the vehicle drove 550 miles, from the Bay Area to Las Vegas, almost entirely without human control.
The changes that self-driving cars may bring are dramatic: fewer traffic deaths, easier commutes, perhaps even the whole-sale redesign of freeways and suburbs. Still, big hurdles remain, including handling diverse weather conditions, safety rules and legal liability, especially when accidents arise. In the future, will you drive your car or will it drive you?
Watch QUEST Wednesdays at 7:30pm on KQED 9 or online any time.

KQED Podcasts Led by veteran public radio reporter-producers Amy Standen and Judy Campbell, along with off-mic support from producers Siouxsie Oki and Matthew Williams, The Leap is a storytelling podcast about people in the throes of dramatic, risky transformations. Explains Amy: “So many times in my reporting, I’ve come across people whose stories moved me profoundly. I found myself retelling the stories over and over again to friends and family. And yet because they didn’t fit neatly into a one-minute news piece, they ended up on the cutting-room floor, so to speak. They never made it to air.” The Leap gives Amy and Judy an opportunity to share incredible stories about what it takes for people to move from one place in life to another. The pilot season (launching October 6, with new episodes every other week) includes stories of leaps across gender and sanity, a punk rock-icon turned computer programmer and a truck engineer-turned-entrepreneur who created the world’s worst smell. Along the way, listeners will also meet the people who push them forward or hold them back.
Come take the leap with us!kqed.org/TheLeap
Podcasts are hot right now. The success of This American Life’s hugely popular Serial has certainly played an important role, with Pew Research Center data showing that podcast listenership has been growing consistently over the past two years. The percentage of Americans who listened to podcasts in 2008 versus January 2015 has nearly doubled, from 9 to 17 percent. So what media company with a talented, creative and innovative staff wouldn’t consider creating more podcasts? In March, KQED launched a “co-opetition” called Project Podcast. The goal: create a challenge to fund and support the internal development of an original audio podcast idea. Nineteen proposals were submitted from 55 KQED staff members representing a dozen departments across the organization. The spirit of cooperation, innovation and community was alive as teams applied the Design Thinking Process (developed at Stanford University’s d.school) to their proposals. Over the course of 13 weeks and with the aid of KQED senior staff judges and guest judges from Audible and Soundcloud, six semifinalist podcast teams were narrowed down to one lucky winner: The Leap.

Pop culture gets a bad rap. We say it’s shallow or meaningless or irrelevant, yet we consume it in droves. Like it or not, popular culture — from music and movies to the online thoughts of public figures — has preoccupied us for centuries, and KQED Arts’ new weekly podcast The Cooler carries P

Do you ever feel outraged and want to know who is responsible? Then you will love the new show Reveal, a first-of-its-kind, one-hour public radio show dedicated to investigative reporting from the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), based in Emeryville, and PRX. The Raj, Romance and RevolutionRalph Whelan is a complicated man. English by birth, he’s a well-placed civil servant in India in the final years of the British Raj. Whelan’s psychological ties to India are at war with his professional loyalties to England. He might just represent the British colonial conscience abroad — entrenched and divided, in denial and guilt-ridden. You may not recognize the name of the actor who plays him: Henry Lloyd-Hughes.
After watching Indian Summers (Sundays at 9pm on KQED 9), putting that name to his face will no longer present a problem. With this role, Lloyd-Hughes makes a ommanding impression as a leading man. He embodies the might and vulnerability of an empire in decline. KQED’s Jeffrey Edalatpour spoke with Lloyd-Hughes about Indian Summers, his career in the United Kingdom and the independent film shorts he’s written.

In 1954, the late Richard Moore was hired as one of the first employees at KQED, where he went on to become an accomplished television producer, writer and director as well as the organization’s second president. During his tenure, Moore founded KQED’s documentary film unit, which was responsible for creating more than 100 films funded and distributed by PBS’s predeces-sor, National Educational Television.
Watch four of the films on Saturday, October 24, starting at 8pm on KQED 9.
Take This Hammer (1963)KQED’s mobile film unit follows author and activist James Baldwin as he’s driven around San Francisco to meet with members of the local African American community. Escorted by Youth for Service Executive Director Orville Luster, Baldwin’s intent on discovering “the real situation of Negroes in the city, as opposed to the image San Francisco would like to present.”
Report from Cuba (1967)Fidel Castro’s attempt to spread his revolu-tion is demonstrated at a July 1967 meeting celebrating the 14th anniversary of the attack on Fort Moncada. Castro is seen addressing an enthusiastic throng of more than 100,000, including Stokely Carmichael and a delega-tion from the National Liberation Front of Vietnam.
From Protest to Resistance (1968)Three veterans of the Civil Rights Movement are followed over the course of a year as they move from demonstrating to political organizing. Interviews, speeches and political reflections from Mario Savio, Stokely Carmi-chael and David Harris are featured. USA Poetry — Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen GinsbergThis film offers extraordinary profiles of Beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the thriving arts scene in North Beach.
