Dear Beaty Parents, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Beaty Early Childhood School. One of my favorite things about working in the field of education is the chance to start anew each school year. Each year we strive to become better educators for your children. So if you are a returning family, welcome back! If you are new to Beaty I hope that you and your child will have a wonderful learning experience at Beaty. We know the beginning of the year brings some anxiety for parents and students. We will see some tears these first few days, however, we know from experience that these tears soon turn to smiles as children (and parents) get comfortable at Beaty. We are confident that this will be a great year of learning and growth for your child. Beaty Early Childhood School is fortunate to have an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA). I would strongly encourage you to join our PTA. It is a great way to get involved in the school and to meet other Beaty families. Many of our parents have gained lasting friendships through the PTA while strengthening our school community. Our strength is in our diversity. Please bring your unique contribution to our PTA through your membership and participation. Our motto for the 2013-2014 school year is “Beaty ECS… Fresh Ideas Start Here”. Our district continues to be “forward thinking” and strives to provide an excellent education for all students. This year we will all be learners; students as well as administrators, staff members and parents. We have a responsibility to learn and become better so that we provide the most relevant learning opportunities for your children. It will be an exciting year as we continue to learn about the best ways to educate our students for their future. Our goal is to ensure that each child and parent feel welcome at Beaty. We are here to serve you and to ensure that this year is beneficial for your child and for you as a family. President’s Post
Dear Beaty Parents,
Welcome to Beaty Early Childhood School! We look forward to another productive school year and hope that you and your child will enjoy all that Beaty has to offer.
Beaty has a highly dedicated staff, eager students, and parents who are interested in education. We, as a PTA, have accomplished many things by working together. We believe cooperation provides our children the best opportunities to develop into life-long learners.
We encourage you to get connected by joining the PTA as we begin our 2013-2014 membership drive. Our success depends on you. How can you help? Simply join the PTA! We know many of you lead extremely busy lives and do not have the time to commit to active participation. However, your membership ensures that the programs the PTA provides our students stay in place and will help make the school year a success!
Our children have many talents and gifts that will continue to develop as they travel through childhood. As a parent, I know that you want to do everything you can to help nurture your child and help them grow into the best that they can be. Taking an active role in your child’s education through the PTA is an important step in guiding them on their journey.
Our PTA provides its members with a way to share concerns, experiences and knowledge about children. We offer many enriching programs and fun activities for students, as well as educational programs for our members. If you would like to find out more about the PTA, please feel free to email me at:

Dear Beaty families,
Do your mornings begin in a peaceful, perfectly orchestrated manner, or do
they begin with nagging, yelling, searching for lost shoes, and tossing out
uneaten breakfast? It can be very challenging to establish a morning routine
that allows each family member to get where they need to go in a timely,
hassle-free manner. The first step is to examine the difficulties in your morning
routine. Then problem solve them, and practice the solutions with your entire
family.
Being proactive the night before is the key. Take care of as many
responsibilities as possible in the evening. Shower or bathe your children in
the evening. Help your child pack their backpack and snack. Have a
special place to keep the child’s school nametag. Work with your child to
select a weather-appropriate outfit and shoes. You could offer the child two
choices, “Would you like to wear the blue shirt or the red shirt?” Keep a
family calendar and note special dress-up days or activities as you read the
school communication. Consult your calendar in the evening to be sure
everything is prepared. Children who have adequate sleep are easier to
wake, so consider your child’s bedtime may need to change as he/she
starts school. Preschool age children need to sleep approximately 10 - 12
hours per day
In the morning, keep it simple. Offer breakfast choices that are quick and
easy to prepare. If your child is not a “morning person”, consider waking
him/her 15 minutes earlier to allow time to adjust. Establish a good-bye ritual
that you can repeat daily as you drop off your child at school, such as:
giving a hug, singing a song, blowing a kiss, or giving a high five. These rituals
help kids transition from your loving care to the teacher’s care. Finally, if a
morning routine is a huge challenge in your family, consider practicing the
routine on a weekend or holiday (when you are not stressed) to be sure your
child understands your expectations. Establishing a positive morning routine
is an important life skill for your child to develop with your guidance

Hello Beaty Families, I am very excited that your child will be attending Beaty Early Childhood School. I am here to assist in making your child’s experience a positive one. I am focused on the following main areas at the beginning of the year:
1. Medical concerns – I need to be aware of any medical concerns you have regarding your child. This may include, but is not limited to, asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder, or moderate to severe allergies to food or medication. If your child has any medical concerns that I should know about, please stop by the clinic or contact me via phone or email (my contact info is listed below). There may be certain forms which will need to be completed and submitted to the clinic from your child’s pediatrician.
2. Immunizations – It is imperative that we have been provided with up to date documentation of your child’s immunizations.
3. Medications - All medications must be brought to the clinic by a parent or adult. Please do not send medication in your child’s snack or backpack. All medications must be in the original container with the child’s name and proper dose. A pink medication request form must be filled out. Only medication that can’t be given at home will be given at school.
4. Emergency Contacts - Please provide current contact information. Please provide more than one number where we can contact someone who can pick up your child in the event of illness or injury. If your child becomes ill at school, they must be picked up in a timely manner.
During the first 5 years of life, there are many immunizations to keep track of. On the following page is the immunization requirement for PISD which is based upon the regulations set forth by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Listed below are some additional key items that need to be included on the immunization record:
1. Your child’s name should be clearly documented on the form (a birth date is also very helpful).
2. The clinic/ doctor’s office/ health clinic name is clearly marked on the record. 3. Each immunization has the date with the month, day, and year documented for
when it was received. 4. For those children that will be turning four years old during the school year, or are
in the process of updating their immunizations, please remember to send a copy of your child’s updated immunization record to school. You are welcome to send it in your child’s backpack, fax it, email it, or drop it off in the office.

School Health Services
Immunization Requirements for Pre-KG 2013-2014
Texas law requires proof of immunization. This is required of every student, according to prescribed school grade criteria, seeking admission to or enrolled in any school in the Plano Independent School District.
Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus/Td
(DTP, DTaP, DT, Td, Tdap)
Four doses of any combination of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis containing
vaccine will meet the requirements.
A booster dose will be required after four years of age or prior to
Kindergarten enrollment.
Polio Three doses required.
If both OPV and IPV were given, a total of four doses should be given.
If all IVP or OPV were given, a booster dose will be needed after four
years of age or for Kindergarten enrollment.
Measles/Mumps/Rubella
(MMR)
One dose of measles, mumps, and rubella with the first dose on or after
the first birthday.
A second dose of measles, mumps and rubella is required for
Kindergarten enrollment.
Hepatitis B Three doses required.
Hepatitis A Two doses with the first one on or after the first birthday.
Varicella (Chickenpox)
One dose required on or after the first birthday.
A second dose is required for Kindergarten enrollment.
HIB
Minimum of three doses with one after twelve months of age or one dose
after fifteen months of age.
Pneumococcal One dose if child is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated after the age of
twenty four months.
See below for completed vaccinated series options:
At least three doses with one dose on or after 12 months of age
Two doses with both doses on or after 12 months of age
One dose on or after 24 months of age
Receipt up to and including four days before the minimum interval or age will satisfy the requirement.
Serologic confirmation or evidence of illness or immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, hepatitis A or
varicella is acceptable in lieu of vaccine. Documentation of previous illness to varicella may substitute for
vaccination.
Medical Exemption: The law allows physicians to write a statement stating that the vaccine(s) required would be
medically harmful or injurious to the health and well-being of the child. The written statement by the physician
must be submitted to the school. Unless it is written in the statement that a lifelong condition exists, the
exemption statement is valid for only one year from the date signed by the physician.
Conscientious/Religious Exemption: The law allows parents/guardians to choose an exemption from
immunization requirements for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief. Instructions for the affidavit to
be signed by parents/guardians can be found at www.ImmunizeTexas.com. The completed and returned form
from the TDH must be submitted to the school. The affidavit will be valid for two years.
Please note: In the case of an outbreak, an un-immunized child may be prohibited from school attendance. If your
health care provider is out of the required vaccine, but it is still available through the health department, the
vaccine is still required for school entry.

Food with Minimal Nutritional Value Reminder (Otherwise known as FMNV’s)
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) policy prohibits schools from serving or providing access for students to foods with minimal nutritional value (FMNV) on school premises during the school day.
The following items are listed as not appropriate for school:
Carbonated beverages
Popsicles
Chewing gum
Hard candy (includes candy canes, lollipops)
Starbursts or jolly ranchers
Gum drops or jelly beans
Marshmallow candies
Cotton candy
Candy coated popcorn TDA recognizes that celebrating student birthdays with a classroom party is a time-honored tradition that provides the opportunity for parental involvement in the education of their children, which is beneficial for students, parents and teachers. Foods otherwise restricted by the policy are permitted in classroom student birthday parties. Thank you so much for your assistance in helping us to comply with this policy.
Discipline Management Plan
All students at Beaty will be treated with dignity and respect. We believe that it is our role to teach appropriate behavior rather than to punish inappropriate behavior. We are committed to helping your child learn to make RIGHT CHOICES! If you have any concerns about how we handle student behavior at Beaty, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Jan Hughes (School Counselor), or Susie Vaughan (Principal).
We believe that teaching, communication, and caring are the key ingredients to a successful discipline management program. It is our goal to have every student learn how to make wise decisions, live with the consequences of their actions, and to develop character. At the beginning of the school year, class and building principles are discussed with teachers. The four main principles, taken from Jim and Charles Fay’s Love and Logic for Early Childhood are:
Build the child’s self concept
Share the control or decision-making
Offer empathy, then consequences
Share the thinking and problem solving

Let the reading begin! Connecting kids and books is a joy for me. Each
class will attend a scheduled story time every two weeks. In addition, story
time includes songs, rhymes, finger plays and puppets. During the first few
library times, we will talk about library procedures, taking care of our
library books and sharing books. Li-Beary Bear will help us learn about being
kind to books.
Students will begin checking out a book to bring home soon. Look for the
book to come home in a “Bee a Reader” library bag. Students may keep the
book for one week and return it each time in the library book bag. I
encourage you to read and talk about the book at least three times.
Some of the books for story time will be: It’s Library Day by Janet
Stoeke; Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes or Pete the Cat: I Love
my White Shoes by Eric Litwin; I Went Walking by Sue Williams and The
Little School Bus by Carol Roth. Ask your child to share the following songs
and rhymes with you: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” “Five Green and
Speckled Frogs,” “Hickory Dickory Dock” and “Humpty Dumpty”. Perhaps you
can check these books out from our library or the public library to read at
home. Each time you reinforce the connection between school and home, you
strengthen the foundation for learning that will support your children
throughout their lives.
Please stop by our library to meet me and sign up for our parent check out
program which will begin on Monday, September 23. The library will be open to parents for the first half hour Monday-Friday after student drop off. You will receive library information on the Parent Information Night,
September 12th. We also need parent volunteers to help our program
succeed so please sign up with the PTA or me.
Our first book fair will be September 9 - 13 in the library during school
hours. Please stop by that week to view the great preschool selection
offered by Scholastic. Also, you can purchase a book to donate to your
teacher’s classroom library. The book fair will also be open during Parent
Information Night on Thursday, September 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Look
for the book fair flyer coming soon in your child’s backpack.

The district uses RAPTOR as a tool to control visitor access. All visitors to the
campus must check in at the front office and present a government issued
identification card in order to receive a visitor badge. Visitors must also sign in at
arrival and out when leaving the building. Visitors must wear their visitor
badge while they are in our building.

Emergency Preparedness
In conjunction with the district Safety and Security Services department our campus has developed emergency preparedness plans. Our priority is keeping students safe on a daily basis. Each campus has developed
emergency procedures and prepares for emergencies by practicing mandatory drills. These drills include monthly fire drills, inclement weather
drills, and other emergency drills. We want to be prepared so that in the event of any emergency we can do our best to keep your child and our staff safe.
In the event of a weather emergency the district will monitor news and
weather outlets. Each campus has an emergency radio which allows for direct communication with district level personnel. Dismissal of students
may be delayed based on the weather situation at the end of the school day. Campus personnel will make campus level decisions about moving students to weather-safe rooms. Emergency communications will be
handled by the district Communications department through the PISD website, School Messenger, and major news outlets.

Join the Beaty PTA . . . Why join the PTA, you ask? For the kids, that's why!
100% enrollment of parents and staff will allow Beaty PTA to offer a variety of programs designed for students as well as parents. Your support of the Beaty PTA makes possible the resources for programs held throughout the year, campus improvements, teacher workshops, and staff appreciation.
Dive in! Individually we are one drop, collectively we are an ocean. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your community and school. PTA functions are opportunities to meet parents from all over the city and teachers from other “neighborhoods.”
Share the Leadership. By volunteering with Beaty PTA, you gain the opportunity to share your leadership skills and attributes with your child’s school. Working together as a community, you and Beaty PTA will produce friendly environments and valuable experiences. There are still important positions we need filled: Treasurer, Ways & Means,

Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.
"Discover the world with Beaty PTA": We encourage each and every parent at Beaty to become a member of the PTA. Our goal this year is 100% participation.
Volunteering. You are invited to join the PTA. Your membership allows you to share the school experience with your children. And if you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you! Just contact any one of the PTA Board Members.
PTA meetings. PTA members are not required to attend the PTA meetings. Of course, members are always welcome and encouraged to attend the general PTA meetings, picnics, coffees, and programs held throughout the year.
Home and Community Involvement. Every parent is unique and Beaty PTA
embraces the various cultures of our school. We encourage business members of the community to not only support Beaty PTA, but also to become members. This display of educational support is extremely valuable to the social, emotional, and academic development of your child.
In short, when PTA gets involved, children benefit; when you get involved in PTA, the child that benefits most is your own."

WAYS & MEANS
Dear Beaty Parents,
For those of you returning to Beaty, welcome back! For those of you who are new to Beaty, welcome!
The Ways and Means committee is the fundraising committee of the PTA.
We are offering various opportunities to participate in fundraising efforts and appreciate all of the support you can give. Take a glance at the many ways you can help support Beaty and the Beaty PTA this school year.
Year-Round Fundraising Activities:
1. Spirit Wear: Every Friday is “Spirit Day”. We encourage all
students to wear clothing with the school colors: blue, green and purple. In addition, the PTA has Beaty T-shirts that are available for
$10.00 each. Complete the PTA order form included in this newsletter, and return it in your child’s backpack. The PTA will deliver the spirit wear to your child’s classroom to be sent home.
2. Car Decals: Colored car decals with our school name and the
butterfly mascot are on sale for $1.00 each. Let everyone know
how proud you are that your child goes to Beaty. Complete the PTA order form included in this newsletter, and return it in your child’s
backpack. The PTA will deliver the car decal to your child’s classroom to be sent home.
3. Grocery Store Rebates: This is a great way to provide
additional funds to the school by doing something that you probably
already do at least weekly. There is NO additional cost to you!! Every time you purchase something from a participating grocery store (Tom Thumb and Kroger) a portion of your purchase will be
given back to Beaty ECS. Check your child’s backpack in the coming weeks for more details.

Fundraiser in late September.
As always, we offer the “Write a Check” program where 100% of your donation goes directly to Beaty ECS. If you don’t need any gift items, it’s a great way to support the school.

SAGE stands for Special and Gifted Education.
The Plano Council of PTAs established the SAGE committee to provide an opportunity for families and teachers of students who learn differently to
share resources and friendship.
Why special education and gifted? Children in both areas share a common need for a special focus in their education. Approximately 25% of
the PISD student population has been identified to fall into these categories. SAGE focuses on education, communication, and support for
these families and the teachers who work with them.

There will be six early release days at the elementary level this year. At the Early Childhood level, we will be alternating between mornings and afternoons off, so each session will have three days off.
The Texas Pledge of Allegiance reads as follows: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”
The U.S. Pledge of Allegiance reads as follows: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

Texas state law requires all students in the state of Texas to recite the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags. On written request of a student’s parent, the student may be excused from the recitation.
Each school must also provide a minute of silence each day following the recitation of the pledges to “reflect, pray, meditate, or engage in any other silent activity that is not likely to interfere with or distract another student.”

We would like to introduce you to the Teacher Recognition
Corner in our newsletter. If you have a teacher, or group of
teachers, to whom you want to say "Thank You", this is all you have
to do:
Write a quick note of thanks (it can be a just few sentences or a long
letter ... whatever you want to do to thank these great people)
Include your name and your child's name
Include the name(s) of the teacher(s) you want to recognize
You can email it to: [email protected]. Please put "Special Thank You"
in the subject line. You can also send it in an envelope in your child's backpack.
Please print clearly: "Beaty PTA – Teacher Appreciation" on the envelope.

Picnic Thursday,
Traffic Safety
Please drive slowly around our school and be alert to those around you. Our staff members will do our very best to ensure your child’s safety. We will also work to make our drop off and pick up system efficient. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Also, please have your child remain seated until you stop at our designated drop off point and a staff member opens the car door. We are concerned about student safety in the car as well as out of the car!
Distribution Policy
Students may distribute materials to other students at designated times within the school day. Appropriate
times for distribution are during arrival or dismissal. If you send party
invitations for distribution, we suggest invitations be given to every student in your
child’s class.

Playground Safety
Student safety is a priority at Beaty. Please help us by making sure your child wears close-toed shoes to school. We will use the
playground on a daily basis (weather permitting) and it is important that your child has appropriate footwear. Sandals and flip-flops are not appropriate for the playground.

Wear them every
day!
Name Tags
Please make sure your child wears his/her
name tag every day. Name tags are an
essential part of the security measures that
are designed to insure the safety of your
child. We realize that it is a challenge to
keep up with name tags. You may want to
establish a routine of putting the name tag
back in your child’s backpack or in another
consistent place so it can be located each
day before school. Because name tags are a
vital part of our safety and security
measures, we will replace lost name tags to
ensure each student always has one.
There will be a $2.00 charge for
replacement of name tags.

Backpacks
Some of our students bring rolling backpacks to school. We would ask that children use a traditional backpack, rather than a rolling backpack, for the following reasons:
Some of our children cannot control the rolling backpacks and they trip themselves or other students. Our hallways are very crowded at arrival and dismissal, so this can create some difficulties.
Some of the rolling backpacks do not fit into the lockers.
We are recommending that students do not use rolling backpacks for the 2013-2014 school year. If you feel like your child needs a rolling backpack for some reason, please feel free to talk with your child’s teacher. Please make sure that your child’s backpack is large enough for a 9 X 12 inch folder or notebook. Smaller backpacks are difficult for the children to pack.
