D ress for success Is an InternatIonal not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing

professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Since starting operations in 1997, Dress for Success has expanded to more than 125 cities in 15 countries. To date, Dress for Success has helped more than 700,000 women work towards self-sufficiency.

Dress for Success Worldwide held it’s ninth annual Success Summit at the Epic Hotel in Miami, Florida. With the theme ”Ignite Your Passion: Refuel the Power to Empower,” this year’s Success Summit inspired Dress for Success women from around the world to pay forward that which Dress for Success has given them by becoming leaders in their local communities.

What has flourished into a powerful series of seminars for the everyday woman began as the groundbreaking idea of Dress for Success Worldwide CEO, Joi Gordon, who was inspired by her own experience attending a multitude of high-level leadership conferences to create a forum for the women of Dress for Success. Today, the Success Summit has grown into an innovative international forum for women who are on their way to becoming leaders and catalysts for change in their community.

“Empowering women means providing them with the resources they need to become leaders in their careers and their community,” said Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide. “This year’s Success Summit represented the continued initiative of Dress for Success to bridge the gap between the cutting edge career advancement program-ming of prestigious women’s leadership conferences and the women who need it most.”

The three-day leadership conference kicked off with a ritzy red carpet event, with all affiliate attendees receiving the A-list treatment thanks to hair styling by Dee Adames, Season 2 winner of Bravo’s Sheer Genius, and stylists from Redken. Make-up was provided by Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and elegant evening attire was donated by renowned designers including, David Meister and Rachel Roy.

Fitness expert Brett Hoebel, best known for his appearance on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, delivered an inspiring speech and presented the women with their new “Dream, Believe and Inspire” necklaces from lia sophia that will surely serve as an impactful reminder to them as they carry the knowledge that they learned over the weekend back into their communities. There was also a surprise performance by the “every woman” herself, Chaka Khan!

While there was plenty of fun to be had, delegates also created action plans to pursue their professional passions and bring awareness to a local cause in their own com-munities by choosing a Community Action Project. The true goal of Success Summit is to provide the women with the tools to take the next step in their career toward a more fulfilling life and become an integral and active part in the world around them, a mission that the Community Action Project embodies in every aspect.

The ninth annual Success Summit, which was organized by Dress for Success Worldwide and hosted by Dress for Success Miami, was without a doubt a success, and served

as a great inspiration to all in attendance.

COMMUNITY NEWS

For the 10th consecutIve year, the renowned institute, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of

Medicine, has ranked No. 1 nationally in ophthal-mology in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” rankings.

“This remarkable decade-long streak as No. 1 con-firms Bascom Palmer’s reputation as America’s leader in providing the most advanced and comprehensive vision care,” said Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, Dean of the Miller School and CEO of UHealth. “Our amazing Bascom Palmer team is consistently redefining excellence – in vision research, clinical care and education – which brings hope to patients with some of the world’s most debilitating ophthalmological conditions.”

Reflecting on the past 10 years at the top of the rankings, Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., professor of ophthalmology and Chair of Bascom Palmer, also credited Bascom Palmer’s high-performance team.

“Reaching this 10-year milestone has everything to do with the tireless commitment of Bascom Palmer’s ophthalmologists, vision researchers, nurses, ophthalmic techni-cians, and support staff,” Alfonso said. “I am honored and privileged to be a part of Bascom Palmer’s performance as the nation’s most sought-after medical destination for ophthalmology, and look forward to setting the bar for patient-centered care for decades to come.”

Founded in 1962, Bascom Palmer is the largest ophthalmic care, research and educational facility in the southeastern United States. Its staff treats more than 250,000 patients and performs more than 13,000 surgeries annually. At the forefront of innovation in ophthalmology for more than five decades, the institute’s physicians and scientists are internationally recognized for their expertise in every eye disorder, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, dry eye, eye cancers and eye diseases in children.

Bascom Palmer has nearly 80 faculty and researchers working on revolutionary ways to treat eye disorders and disease, including research that could reverse

vision loss in demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. Bascom Palmer also continues to be a leader in age-related macular degeneration research and education.

To further accommodate the increasing demand for services, Bascom Palmer continues to expand access to its top-ranked eye care and clinical trials throughout Florida. Bascom Palmer recently broke ground on a new eye center in Naples that will quadruple the space of its existing facility, and plans are under way to open a center in Coral Gables on the University of Miami campus. Bascom Palmer also serves as the ophthalmology department for University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami VA Medical Center.

From a new grand atrium lobby and a children’s area of “super hero” proportions to a three-story water thrill slide and a spa to stimulate the “Senses,” there will be plenty of new and magical surprises in store for cruise guests.  The ship will feature will also include fun new experiences with Marvel characters – the first time Super Hero icons from the Marvel Universe will be introduced on a Disney Cruise Line ship.

Following the “reimagineering” transformation of the ship that will take place during dry dock, the Disney Magic will depart Oct. 20 from Miami on a special five-night voyage including two stops at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, and a stop at Nassau.

This first cruise will set the stage for a schedule of two-, three-, four- and five-night cruises from Miami to the Bahamas and Western Caribbean throughout the year.

“We have always been committed to reinvesting in our fleet and continuously making shipboard enhancements that elevate the guest experience,” said Karl L. Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “What we’re doing with the Disney Magic is yet another step forward in our commitment to delivering the absolute best family vacations at sea.”

Disney Cruise Line knows that traveling families always need more space, so features are included in each room to provide more usable space. Bed frames are elevated to provide storage space underneath.  The bathrooms include the split-bath feature that Disney introduced to the cruise industry — providing even greater convenience to guests.

If you’re looking for a family vacation that will provide fun and relaxation for every member, then Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Magic is the cruise ship for you.

SCHOOL NEWS

Planning for School Days

Now that school Is back In sessIon, gettIng back Into the routIne can be hard. The mornings are the worst…the stress, the rush, the MADNESS!  Don’t you wish you could have an “I Dream of Jeanne” moment, nod your head,

blink your eyes and “poof” everyone is dressed, fed and ready to go?Planning ahead is key.  The night before work/school, plan out everything.

Here are some ways that you can plan ahead to avoid the madness of the mornings:

Organize clothing:Lay out your child’s clothes for school so that they don’t wander around wondering

what to wear. If your child is opinionated about their clothing, and they don’t have to wear a uniform, this will help with the fighting first thing in the morning.

Pack lunches:All dry foods (like chips, cookies, etc.) can go straight into the lunch boxes. Place

drinks and sandwiches in the refrigerator for easy access in the morning.  If you plan to send something hot, place the Thermos containers by the microwave to remind yourself to do that first when you get to the kitchen.

Backpacks:Make sure all backpacks are packed and ready. You can actually sit them in front

of the door so that the kids can’t miss them on the way out.

Plan breakfast:If you really rush in the mornings, plan breakfast the night before too. If your child

eats cereal in the morning, you can place dry cereal in the bowls and store them in the refrigerator over night. You can set up your coffee maker with your coffee the night before and place your mug next to it too.

Here’s hoping your new school year is off to an organized and stress free start!

The Power of Water in your Own Pool with a Certified Trainer!

South Miami • Coral Gables • Coconut Grove • Pinecrest • Palmetto Bay

BY BETTY DEVALLET, CERTIFIED WATER EXERCISE TRAINER

Get Fit and Toned in Your Own Pool!

T hIs Is the goal of aqua fItness revolutIon. Aqua Fitness Revolution is a healthy way to exercise efficiently and safely using water as

a medium to further enhance health and well-being. Water is an amazing element and its physical proper-

ties provide many benefits. You can burn a higher level of calories in a shorter

time thanks to water’s resistance. Water’s resistance increases the intensity of movement and requires a greater muscular effort and a greater energy expenditure which leads to bone development and muscle strengthening as well as cardiovascular and muscular endurance.

Thanks to water’s viscosity, you can control your movements and work your muscles in pairs. The vis-cosity creates an equal amount of resistance in every direction of movement without overloading your joints and muscles. This leads to a better body balance between the muscles groups.

Due to the buoyancy of water, it is also a safe place to workout. Water reduces the forward pull of gravity, therefore weight bearing, joint compression and impact are reduced. This is what makes you feel lighter. The buoyancy also increases your range of motion and improves your joint mobility which contributes to a better flexibility that will enhance activities of daily living.

Thanks to water’s hydrostatic pressure, there is a positive toning effect on skin, tissue

and muscles . Water provides a full body massage, stimulates your skin, reduces swelling and cellulite and improves circulation by increasing blood supply to muscles. Hydrostatic pressure also contributes to reduce soreness after exercising by removing the lactic acid more efficiently.

Water allows a better performance of heart and enhances venous return and cardiac functions with an invigorating effect on the entire body and a detoxi-fication feeling.

Water is relaxing, fun and refreshing which pro-motes joy and happiness.

In the water, results are guaranteed as long as individuals adhere to recommendations for frequency, intensity, duration and mode of training. Aqua Fitness Revolution will help you to reach your goals!

Aqua Fitness Revolution is designed for partici-pants of all age groups, all fitness levels & abilities.

LIFE LESSONS

BY KIMBERLY HALE

Becoming a Better Listener

It’s faIr to say that we engage In countless conversations on a daily basis - with our boss, clients, co-workers, relatives,

and friends. But how frequently are we really listening as much as we could or should?

Living in today’s world of digital distrac-tions and content overload, it should come as no surprise that we’re probably not listening much at all.

Hearing is not the issue. Simply put, hear-ing is the ear perceiving sound. It’s easy, fast and requires no effort on our part. Much like a vehicle operating on cruise control, it just happens. We do it without thinking and sci-ence indicates that we even do it in our sleep. But listening is another story. It’s an important life skill that requires conscious participation. The real difference between hearing and listening is the act of concentrating or paying attention on the part of the listener.

Good listening skills can yield a multitude of personal and professional payoffs. When we actively listen, we increase our capacity to learn as well as to build rapport, understanding and trust - in relationships, in the workplace, in social settings and with our families.

Old habits may be hard-to-break but with conscious desire and practice of the following skills, we can become better listeners.

1. Resist distractions - These days, we multi-task at a frenetic pace. If someone comes to talk to you, simply stop what you are doing and give the person your full attention.

2. Don’t interrupt - Often, we anticipate what the other party is going to say so we interrupt or interject

in an effort to “help” move the conversation along. Refrain from butting in or answering before the other person has finished speaking.

3. Focus on the conversation and the speaker - Look directly at the speaker and use body language and gestures like smiling, nodding and facial expres-sions to convey that you are focused and attentive.

4. Open your mind - Our ability to listen can be distorted by our own assumptions. Avoid judging a speaker on how they talk, look, or if you do not share their ideas or beliefs.

5. Provide feedback - If you’re unclear on what the other person is saying, ask questions when they’re done speaking. Otherwise, clarify to ensure that you got the message right by paraphrasing what was said in your own words. Providing feedback shows that you’ve been listening to (and care about) what’s been said.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

F rom december 2007 to present, south florIda has experIenced a 400 percent increase in foreclosure filings, and more than one fourth of all mortgages in the United States right now are at least 60 days past due. In view of

these staggering statistics, most homeowners simply give up the fight for their home before it even begins. However, a foreclosure lawsuit is just like any other lawsuit – the lender must prove its entire case before it can obtain a judgment. Just because you’ve been served with foreclosure papers does not mean you have to leave your home! The legal foreclosure process can take two years or more if the borrower is able to identify and present valid defenses to the foreclosure. Here are some suggestions on how to use foreclosure proceedings to your advantage, and possibly “beat the bank.”

CONDUCT A FORENSIC AUDIT OF YOUR LOANFirst of all, perform a detailed audit of your loan transaction through a qualified mort-gage auditing firm. A forensic audit often reveals serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by the same lenders that initiate foreclosure proceedings. An audit may also reveal fatal flaws in the transfer of your mortgage.

FILE A COUNTERCLAIM AGAINST YOUR LENDER Using the results of your forensic audit, and assuming you have identified violations of law in connection with your loan, you should file a counterclaim against your lender for those same violations. In other words, sue your lender within the same proceedings as a means to gain negotiating leverage and improve your mortgage terms. In some cases, borrowers have been able to obtain a cancellation of the mortgage altogether by taking the offensive in a foreclosure proceeding.

DEMAND THE ORIGINAL NOTEMost foreclosure proceedings are not initiated by the original lender, but rather by a party who claims to “own and hold” the Note securing payment of the loan. Surprisingly, many of these third parties don’t actually have possession of the original note, or the right to enforce the obligation. The Note is a negotiable instrument, like a bank check. Do you know any bank that will cash a “copy” of any check? Likewise, no Court will decide a foreclosure proceeding based upon a “copy” of your Note. If you demand the original Note, and the lender is unable to produce it, a foreclosure judgment cannot legally be obtained.

CHALLENGE YOUR LENDER’S RIGHT TO BRING THE FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGIn most cases, your original lender did not formally assign or endorse the Note to the new entity. Florida law only permits an action to be presented by the “real party in interest.” If you never signed an agreement with the party that filed the foreclosure, you can challenge their right to file the foreclosure proceedings altogether. Judges will not hesitate to dismiss a foreclosure proceeding initiated by a company that has no legal right to bring the action.

The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases.

Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, if you just received a foreclosure summons, or if you don’t know a reputable mortgage audit firm in your area, please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 or www.arcialawfirm.com, and we will gladly point you in the right direction.

PARTY PLANNING

Everyone loves a good party, whether It Is a whImsIcal bIrthday, an elegant wedding or a blowout Super Bowl celebration, but a dramatic change has occurred in the way people plan parties and special occasions these days from

those of years past. Today’s parties are not your mother’s parties anymore. In the early days of my party planning career, I learned that if one laid out plenty of

food and drink, guests would not only gladly attend your party but they were assured of having a great time, too. This reinforced what I discovered growing up in a traditional Italian household -- food has the power to bring people together. Food was always the focus of every Sunday dinner, family party and important life celebration and it later served as the foundation of my party planning efforts.

Party planning was also a more simple process back then than it is now. Handwritten invitations and RSVP phone calls were the norm. Guests knew the appropriate attire to wear to a cocktail party, and the cake served at a bridal or baby shower was a standard single layer sheet cake decorated with buttercream icing.

Courtesy of the Web, the onslaught of social media, and reality television, con-temporary parties have become much grander affairs. Children’s birthday parties are indulgent themed productions. Classic cocktail parties now feature DIY food bars and signature drinks. Large-scale events such as weddings and Quinceaneras are all about the guest “experience”. It is not unusual for guests to receive their party invitation via Evite, Facebook Events and Eventbrite. Nor is it abnormal for engaged couples to search online for “over-the-top” event ideas to ensure their reception is truly unforgettable.

While party planning appears to have become more sophisticated in recent years, it is not necessarily more complicated. The same factors responsible for causing the shift in party planning trends can also be a valuable resource in creating new ones. Whatever the best and newest trends may emerge, as long as people choose to gather together socially - there will always be a need to plan a party.

Steve Gibbons, the owner and artist in residence, is exceptionally artistic and creative. He has been doing this work for over 35 years. He oversees everything before it leaves his shop. And for the work that he does, his prices are reasonable. While we were in his shop we saw some of the other things he had done. His talent for creative ways to exhibit art work, diplomas, certificates, sports jerseys, musical instruments, wedding memorabilia, katubahs and military uniforms and decorations is amazing. His latest challenge was figuring out how to display a composition made entirely out of butterfly wings. We appreciated the way he questioned us in order for him to better understand what our needs were. We didn’t hesitate to drive from north Broward County to his shop so that he could do our job.” Warren Wepman

“Framed my law school diploma in a very artistic way.

When you need something framed, we highly recommend Dadeland Framing.
