SEMESTER PROJECT

How does sport compete on the growing market of leisure time amongst

youngsters ?

WHY STUDY THIS?

WE ARE THE RESULT OF OUR PREVIOUS ACTIONS !

There is no academic studies on sport

practice amongst youngsters.

Sport is a multidimensional activity

which has benefits according to “Sport

and policy) (Hoye, Nicholson and

Houlihan,2010) :

Health and beauty

Combating social exclusion

Reducing childhood obesity

Improve economic development

Facilitating urban regeneration

General community welfare

General habit’s are created early in life

Young people are versatile in picking

leisure time.

COMPETITORS

Important that all industries evolve and new

ones are emerging

No new market everybody competing for the

same market (which is get arrow by time).

The national institute of statistics

c2010.en.do) under the population category

clearly indicates that the growing trend

between 1990 and 2009 is that birth rate is

decreasing.

Competitors in leisure time are according to “

www.swisscom.ch”

Meet up with friends

Do nothing

Play a musical instrument

Family bonding

Go shopping

Party’s and disco/club

Library

Going out

Junk foodSocialize with

friends

movies

Actors and stars

SPORT IN LEISURE TIME

Sport can be seen as more than just practicing a

sport:

o Watch it on TV

According to www.thewrap.com the most watched

events on TV of all times :

Number one Opening ceremony of the Beijing

Summer Olympics (1 billion viewers)

Number 3 is the World Cup final in 2006 where

Italy won

o Practice as amateur

o Reading sport journals

o Playing video related games

o Coaching (volunteer coach)

o Writing

o Collecting cards

o Go out with friends in a sport pub

o Go to experience the thrill of a live game

THEORY OF SIENCE

Ontology

In my study I have admitted that most of it is based on a

subjective view.

Another term that has been used is inter-subjectivity

which I put out in the open

I would have wished to use an objective view as I feel it

creates a more trustworthy source of information.

I was not able to do that because I had very limited time

for research and I think it is intended to be used who can

dedicate all their time to the cause

Also I found it hard to detach from the Romanian reality

which I was raised.

I WOULD HAVE LIKED :

:

If I were to have a study where I could have been more

objective I probably would have used Realism , or

moreover critical realism.

Still would have used inductive to build up my hypothesis

I would have liked to use as a method for data collection

strategy ethnography because than I could have

understood the society and the environment which leads

to certain actions.

That would lead to a multi method choice of strategies :

first make a survey with some question based on some

study cases in that region, and than follow the

conclusions with the help of ethnography as a means to

understand it all.

From the time horizon that would lead to a longitudinal

study which I feel would add validity.

DATA COLLECTION METHODS:

Used a mixture of qualitative and quantitative data

Both were included into a survey

As I used a subjective view I tried to analyze and

understand the pupils choice’s from the survey and also

used some academic study cases to make some

recommendation

I wish I would have been able to gather a more

representative sample from different areas to create a more

in depth survey.

Also would have been great to have more open ended

question’s to be closer to a small interview.

VALIDITY DELIMITATION

Chose the data collection methods according to the research question and time given

The paradigm chosen allows for the use of both quantitative and qualitative data collection.

If published the study could raise awareness amongst the authorities who could undertake a larger scale study to create a better plan for sport development.

Time: arrived late in

Romania(some pupils

skipped classes that day

Budget: no money to stage

a more larger scale study,

and on a bigger area (other

cities)

Sample (only one high-

school, pretty small for the

community that the study

served

Case study are out of date

and could reflect a different

reality at the moment

ANALYZE PART

Survey

11 closed ended question’s

1 open-ended question

4 choice of answer for each question

Required info for each pupil:

Sex, class and date

All the survey’s were translated into Romanian

Multi choice allowed

4 classes(9,10,11,12)

Analyze plan

Presenting each question and preliminary comment’s and statistics

Cross sectional analyze between questions

Adding examples from case studies in order to compare with systems from other countries

Trying to use some theories as a way to create a development plan that has good chance of success

SPORT OF CHOICE In the survey we have chosen to talk about the most

popular, but what about the ones we are good at?

First of all fencing (reigning Champions on Paris 2010)

There is no club in Iasi for fencing

Boxing: Lucian Bute world champion IBF super middle weight.

Only one amateur club in Iasi.

Gymnastics

Huge potential but still only one national club to sustain our values, no club in Iasi

Nadia Comaneci (best gymnast of all times, the first perfect ten )

Water polo

Present at all international competitions from 2000 and onwards and still denied by government funding for a new national base in Bucharest

All this are impossible to practice in Iasi and as a leisure time they are not sports that you can start on your own without training

A special case is tennis which ranked low in our survey (16%) although in the past we had very good tradition (Nastase and Tiriac). The bad facilities makes hard to develop this sport and therefore we don’t even have a personality to which kids could look up to.

At the moment there is no race track whatsoever, Olympic size pool, etc.

As an idea Iasi is a bigger city than Aarhus if we look at the number of inhabitants.

Q10: WHAT STOPS YOU FROM PRACTICING

MORE SPORT?

a) cost (32%)

b) infrastructure (21%)

c) don’t want to (12%)

d) time (32%)

So at a first look more than 50 % do not practice

sport because of reasons that are independent of

them

SPORT VS. CHILL OUT

A MODEL TO FOLLOW

The New Yankee stadium (Smith,2008), was built with a staggering figure of 1.3 billion $.

Facilities offer an unforgettable match experience at the game, shopping area around the stadium, good access to stadium, food and beverage, and barbeque in the area.

Keeping the proportions we could benefit from this kind of concept: barbeque, unique match experience, parking facilities, shopping area around etc.

CONCLUSION

If we teach our self to do sports since we are small we will have it in our blood for the rest of our lives. Romania still has a healthy population, but the media is bringing in the American way and kids can be mislead.

Elite sport can only be done if we create conditions for the youth. Romania has the advantage of a medium size population and climate to practice all whether sports, so we need to understand the potential and the fact that we can afford to copy systems that already work somewhere else, so the risk of financial flop is low.

Hospital’s can have low activity all year round if we take up sports since we are young. The health department is one of the worst in Europe, we need government intervention in promoting sick prevention trough sport.

New activities emerge along with the high tech era and we will fall behind at some point in our lives but sport is faithful trough out the years.

Sport can create welfare, and Romania is full of social problems, social exclusion and class segregation. Government needs to start using this powerful weapon to start creating social programs.

All our resources are shrinking by the hour, including the birth rate, we need here in Romania as a consequence to live more than we ever did to support the low birth rate, and that can be achieved by integrating sport a little bit more every day as a leisure activity.
