CLUB NEWS, EVENTS & INFORMATION

Dear Members,

I hope everyone is as happy as I am that we made it through this very rainy and

cold winter. We have been busy maintaining our facilities and have some exciting

things happening at “our” German-American Society.

In January everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of the Oldies with DJ Ron

Champion. March brought us the Soccer Banquet and Dance which was, as usual,

a huge success. The following day we held our Schlachtfest with many guests

enjoying our homemade food. Thank you, Don and Theresia, for coordinating

this event and thank you to all the volunteers – both club and soccer for your

continued support.

Our next Quarterly Meeting is July 11th. Remember this is the time for you to

voice your concerns and give us your input in making ‘your’ club more enjoyable

for all members.

We have some important positions on our Executive Board that need to be filled.

This is the time, as a member, to step up and show your true dedication to our

Society.

Wishing you all a joyous Easter Holiday with your family and friends.

FROHE OSTERN!

Ich wünschen ihnen ein gesegnetes Osterfest und einen schönen Frühling.

Best WishesKathy Hoenisch,President

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE BOARD REGARDING MEMBERSHIP CARDS

The Executive Board of the German American Society kindly asks that all of our members make an effort to have their membership cards on them at all times when visiting the club for member or public events. If asked by an employee or staff member to show your membership card, we request that you politely do so. This is not meant as a slight toward you personally, we

are a large club with a rotating staff and everyone does not always know each other. It is very important for members to have their membership card on their person as it is required by law and keeps us in compliance with the New Jersey Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Not doing so risks penalties for our club and possible loss of our liquor

license. If you do not have your membership card or need a replacement, contact Santo Hannawacker at [email protected].

The History of German SausageBratwurst is one of the oldest dishes of Germany and the first documented evidence of it goes back to almost 1313 which is found in Nuremberg, a Franconian city. The place is an internationally renowned center very famous for its grill sausages production. You can visit this place to relish these great grill sausages and enjoy a tour of the city of Nuremberg. There is evidence of Bratwurst dating back to the 1300s in some region which later became Eastern German. It is one of the most eaten foods amongst the farmers. The fat-filled sausages would be made in the morning and would eat them by noon as they get spoiled fast. You will find the tradition continuing in various German cities, as even now brats are consumed for breakfast. In Germany, we believe that the appetite for sausages has always run very deep. The sausages may have its roots in ancient Greece, but it has firmly developed with the German culture. It has been learned that the best sausage hails from the colder mountain regions, like Germany. Here food was not only available during cooler months, but the dry winds from the North helped in the cutting prices. Hence the famous term, “bratwurst” has been derived from the German words brat which means finely chopped meat and Wurst meaning sausage. The latter also has likely to be stemmed from the word Warren meaning mixture.

GAK Inducts Franz Ofner, Joseph A. Kuhn and Peter Lindauer Sr. to the GAK Hall of Fame

On Saturday, March 2nd, the GAK held its annual Dinner/Dance and also inducted three new members into it's Hall of Fame. GAK President Paul Bette and GAK Vice President Mike Garofalo presented the awards. The three inductees were honored for making significant contributions to the GAK both on and off the field. We congratulate our three new inductees and thank them for their many years of service to our club. It was a great evening for everyone who attended and especially for our three new inductees who received standing ovations upon their induction from all those in attendance.

Franz Ofner came to the United States in 1954 and was also originally a member of the Trenton Liederkranz. He serves as an officer on the GAK Board in 1955 and held a position on the board for an amazing 40 years until 1995. He was Chairman of the Sports Committee for 3 years and also served as the secretary and treasurer. He also was the manager for the Junior Group. Franz was responsible for the planning and communications for the exchange of German terms to our club. Many of the pennants you see hanging in our bar were from those teams that came over to play at the GAK thanks to Franz' efforts.

Joseph A. Kuhn was recognized for being a manager for the GAK Little and Junior Groups for 4 years. He joined the Aurora Club (forerunner of the current German American Society) in 1954 and was involved with the Liederkranz (also a forerunner of the GAS and the GAK) since 1963. He held the position of Second Vice President for 2 years on the GAK Board, and spent many years as a member of the Sports Committee. He also was responsible for building both of the bars in our clubhouse!

Peter Lindauer Sr. came to the the United States in 1956 and was originally a member of the Trenton Liederkranz. He coached the Juniors and the Seniors from 1957 to 1962. He also coached and developed the Junior team from 1963 - 1965 and took that team to the NJ State Championship and lost in the final 0:1 to another German-American Soccer Club Elizabeth Sport Club at the famous Farcher’s Grove Soccer Field in Union, NJ.
