    KEY DRIVERS OF GLOBAL GROWTH

Increasing global demand for horticultural commoditiesdriven by rising incomes, urbanization, awareness of health, andchanging labour practices.

Developments in production practices, postharvest technology, shipping and storage allow for sourcing of materials throughoutthe world, providing year-round product availability, andincreased market opportunities

Horticulture produces are normally high value crops that lead

to higher farm incomes. Higher incomes attract moreinvestmentsin horticulture from small and mid sized farms.

The enormous scope of value additionin this sector leads toenterprise stimulation and cash generation. The involvement of ahigh end value chain has led to a greater interest in this industrythan any other agricultural segment.

Impacts health improvement issuesby diet diversification &improved nutrition has attracted more attention of governmentaland international bodies in this segment.

Farming system diversity - environmental and conservationbenefits are among other peripheral drivers of growth in thisindustry.

    GLOBAL FOOD HABITS

Substantial change in food habit has been noted world wide. Between 2002 and 2008, the consumption of breadand cereals have fallen while countered by a rise in fruit and vegetable consumption.

Some of the prime reasons of the shift are:

Rapid urbanisation in developing economies and increasing health consciousness.

Growth of processing industry and availability of value added products.

Improved technology and higher shelf life of perishable products such as fruits & vegetables.

Improved out reach and accessibility to raw as well as processed products triggered by organised retailing.

Higher per capita availability due to higher productivity and yield of crops.

Indias processed food exports constituted 1.5 percent of the global food trade in 200809.

Estimated surplus to the tune of approx 3-4 milliontons of fruits and 7-8 million tons of vegetables atthe end of 2012. This shows there is an ample

scope of accelerating the exports of fruits andvegetables.

With technology improvement programmes, thereis also a high potential of increasing Indias marketshare in global exports due to the existing pricecompetitiveness.

Value Added Products will play a vital role inenhancing the exports of perishable commoditiesin the world market.

    Favorite Export Destinations(in US$ Million)

Middle East and Asia are the biggest markets of IndianAgri-exports.

EU and the American market is relatively lesspenetrated. Organic Products are of high demand in thesemarkets and may be leveraged on for higher exports.

Controlled Atmosphere and Modified Atmospherestorage technologies may be adopted for sea shipment ofvariety of items. Countries like Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela,Peru, South Africa have leveraged over this technologyheavily for increasing shelf life, thereby making .seashipment efficient with reduced wastage.

Viability and profitability is more on supply of exotic andoff-season products. There are opportunities for costeffective, innovative and unique items.

Germany, Spain, and Italy are saturated markets. Only

certain market niches and product groups provideopportunity for growth. UK and France have relatively largescope of importing the most exotic items.

Organic and fair-trade markets provide quickly growingniches although certification procedures might becomplicated and costly.
