Second Graders’ Views on "Science and Stuff

The following statements were written by second-grade students atthe Amberly Elementary School in Portage, Michigan. Their teacher,Mrs. Dagmar Wright, asked the children to write a story beginningwith the sentence, "I like science because ..." or ti! don’t like sci-ence because ..." This was her only instruction or assistance to thechildren. The remainder of the story�including the ideas andspelling resulting from their I.T.A. ("Initial Teaching Alphabet")reading program, are "solely those of the writers and do not neces-sarily reflect the views of the teacher or school administrators!" TheEditor believes, however, that high-school and college teachers ofscience might well look with envy at the enthusiasm and knowledgeexpressed by these second graders.
