Schiavone/Picone, JV (SPJV) the 86th Street Station finishes contractor mobilized on site April 15, 2014. SPJV will be sharing cavern and surface access with Skanska/Traylor, JV (STJV) over the next eight months as STJV completes the civil work in the north cavern, as well as Entrance 1 (northeast corner of 83rd Street and Second Avenue) and Entrance 2 (north and south sides of 86th Street between First and Second Avenues). They are the last contractor to begin work on Phase 1 of the SAS project. Join us for the unveiling of the CIC’s newest exhibit On Friday, May 23, the Second Avenue Subway Community Information Center will unveil its latest exhibit to the public, “En Route: Construction Techniques and Technologies Used to Build the Second Avenue Subway.” The exhibit offers an in-depth look at how the MTA is undertaking the first major expansion of the subway system in 70 years, in one of the densest neighborhoods in the country. Construction Update

Work Hours

• The contractor is continuing work at the elevator shaft on the south side of E. 86th Street between First and Second Avenues. Crews are lowering materials for the permanent structural liner of the escalator tunnel using a crane. This work is expected to last until the summer of 2014.

• Traffic lanes on E. 86th Street between First and Second Avenues will remain as currently configured with two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane.

• Installation of structural concrete at Entrance 2 (E. 86th Street) has begun. Materials and equipment will be lowered into the work zone using a crane on the north side of E. 86th Street.

• The work zone on the northwest corner of E. 86th Street and Second Avenue will continue to support concrete work in the cavern.

• Materials will continue to be delivered to the cavern via gantry crane between E. 86th and E. 87th Streets.

• Concrete lining of tunnels will continue to be supported from the center work zone on Second Avenue between E. 78th and E. 79th Streets. The center work zone is expected to be dismantled, the street resurfaced, and parking restored on the east side of Second Avenue in spring 2014.

• Structural concrete work in Entrance 1 (E. 83rd Street) is ongoing.

• Installation of waterproofing, reinforcing steel and placement of concrete for the structural wall and arches are ongoing in the cavern.

• The contractor continues placing concrete roof arches in the cavern.

• Concrete lining of the tunnel cross passages between E. 72nd and E. 83rd Streets continues.

• Construction progress statistics to date are:

Future Mezzanine level of 86th Street Station Entrance.

The future 86th Street Station will have two new entrances including 10 escalators, and one street-level ADA accessible elevator at the southeast corner of 86th Street and Second Avenue. Work in this area is to construct the station cavern, entrances and ancillary spaces for the future station. This includes mining of the station cavern bedrock, lining the cavern with structural concrete, and construction of the station entrances and elevator shafts up to street level. This contract’s work is scheduled to be completed in December 2014.

The follow-on contract was awarded on June 12, 2013 for the construction of the station facilities and architectural finishes, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and entrances above street level; construction of the ancillary facilities up to and above street level; and restoration of the street and sidewalks in the station area. The follow-on contractor has started work between 83rd & 85th Streets.
