Recommended Timeline for Post-Secondary Application______________________________

When it comes to planning for a successful future, you don’t want to get stuck in the trap of finding out too late what you were supposed to do years ago. For example, who wants to find out last semester of Grade 12 that they should have taken all three sciences to get into the desired program, when they have only taken two, or a certain 30 level course cannot be used as a subject for admission to the program you desire!

Let’s face it- the earlier you know what’s coming up, the more prepared you’ll be to SUCCESSFULLY tackle the tasks that lie ahead.

So… here are some guidelines to help you stay organized during grade 12 year. Please note this is a general list; please check with LINKS for specifics when making your post-secondary plans.

Timeline______________________________________________________________________

Spring of Grade 11 or September of Grade 12

□ Check the Alberta High School Diploma Requirements to make sure you have all the courses you need to graduate this year. This includes: PE 10, CALM 20, 20 level Math, 20 level Science, 30 level English, 30 level Social Studies, 10 additional 30 level credits, and 10 additional option credits□ Talk with counselor/parents & career transitions advisor about career and post-secondary choices□ If you are not considering post-secondary right after high school, examine what other options are open to you- determine what you need to do to achieve your goals. If joining the workforce or traveling for a year in an interim plan, get all the information you need to apply for post-secondary in the future.□ Request information from schools (including financial aid/housing)□ Contact schools to schedule visits □ Begin to work on admissions applications- see LINKS for assistance if needed (Keep copies of applications and forms sent to all schools)□ Check monthly scholarship updates, scholarship websites (included in this guide)□ Keep checklists- you MUST MEET DEADLINES

Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards_______________________________________________

The following is a compilation of scholarships, bursaries and awards that may help with the financial expenses that accompany Post-Secondary education. Since most of this information is based on the previous year, please inquire early as to changed application deadlines and requirements. Student Services (LINKS) should have the most recent information and applications or know of where to locate the information surrounding the particular scholarship, bursary or award.

Remember, students, these scholarships, bursaries, and awards are meant for you! Some are based on participation, some on financial need, some on academic success, some on geographical area and some on all of this or none of this!! Do NOT underestimate your accomplishments or abilities; your participation on teams, clubs, executives, community groups, volunteer agencies, and the work world can always help your chances. The only sure thing is… that if you don’t apply you will not receive that particular scholarship or bursary.

Definition you should be familiar with;

Scholarship: A financial award that is intended for study at colleges, universities or some form of formal schooling.

Bursary: A financial award that is intended for study at colleges, universities or some form of formal schooling. That looks at financial need as criteria.

Awards: Basically just that, an award that is granted based on requirement’s set out by that particular award committee. Money is allocated in whatever way the committee decides

Both scholarships and bursaries most often have other guidelines, such as requirement’s you must fulfill in order to qualify, along with how the funds will be allocated (all to tuition, or books, or combination of the two, or purely just cash to be used as you deem necessary). Either way it is financial help that will lessen the debt load that you could possibly accumulate over your years of Post-Secondary academics.

General Tips on Scholarships_____________________________________________________

↗ Determine which scholarships are realistically available by consulting the application criteria and deadlines pertinent to each scholarship.↗ Maintain a high Grade Point Average (GPA). Note scholarships for which candidates are screened according to GPA (in some cases specific courses and time over multiple years is looked at)↗ Begin the application process early in the school year. The complete process of acquiring an application form, completing the form, gathering letters of reference and recommendations; and returning all relevant documents can take a considerable amount of time.↗ Chart the scholarships for which you intent to apply for, making special notice to deadlines for each. This will help you keep on track and ensure you don’t miss any deadlines.↗ Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Often you can use portions of your application packages for multiple scholarships so make sure to keep the originals.↗ Apply for a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) as soon as possible, if you don’t have one already. ↗ Don’t discount scholarships just because you don’t seem to meet one or more of the requirement’s, many scholarships go unclaimed purely because no one applied, therefore, if you’re the only one who applied you may be the lucky recipient.

Scholarships Letters of Application________________________________________________

Prepare a letter of application early in the school year. Review and re-write this letter a number of times throughout the year. In many cases, the initial screening of candidates will be based on the letter of application. Make sure you keep this letter for further reference.

The content of your letter should follow the format suggested by the individual scholarship. Make certain that the letter is neat and legible and use 8 ½ x 11 inch paper, one side only. Include all relevant information, paying attention to details specified on the application forms. Keep the tone of the letter businesslike- be straight forward and concise. The letter should usually contain:

A brief outline of your interests, hobbies, and activities A brief summary of positions held by you in school, youth organizations, and the communityA short statement of your purpose in seeking to attend post-secondary institution Information concerning awards, scholarships, and prizes you have won in any field Details of employment in the last two-years (including part-time or summer employment)

Alternate Options for Scholarships________________________________________________

Post-Secondary Institutions

Each college, university or technical institute has its own awards office with a large number of scholarships and bursaries available. They want those monies used, so it is in your best interest to apply. One application form covers most awards but if you are in the top 10% academically, the universities have their own elite scholarships that require different application forms and deadlines. Each institution has its own awards office and information booklets. They want you to take advantage of the awards; do not disappoint them!

Check L.I.N.K.S. to see if it has the information and application forms; the counselors will certainly have online, links, addresses and phone numbers for you to enquire further.

Military

One method of obtaining subsidies for university is often overlooked and that is through the Canadian Armed Forces. A number of plans are available if you meet their academic and medical standards. The admission requirements are very high with an emphasis on the mathematics and the sciences. The plans are ROTP, RETP, and CFCCEP.

ROTP (Regular Officer Training Program). This pays the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, and instruments, plus a monthly salary. Free medical and dental care is also provided. You will likely go to a Military College or in some cases attend a civilian university. As an Officer Cadet you would train with the military during the summer. Upon graduating you are normally obliged to serve 5 years with the military as an officer.

RETP (Reserve Entry Training Program). Those who do not want to commit themselves to a full time service career. Admission and course requirements are the same as for ROTP applicants and the same education and training are provided. But RETP cadets pay annual fees to help pay cost of tuition, clothing, books, instruments, laundry, meals and accommodations. You are required to take summer military training for which you are paid. Scholarships are also available. Graduates of RETP undertake to serve in the reserve.

CFCCEP (Canadian Forces Community College Entry Plan). This is for those wishing to take pilot training in an approved community college aviation technology program. This leads to a diploma and a commercial pilot license. Mount Royal College in Calgary is an example of such an approved course. Apply as early in the school year as possible to a Canadian Forces Recruiting Center as selection of candidates is finalized in April each year.

Page 10: sec…  · Web viewYoung women entering 1st year ... Neil Armstrong Scholarship? ... Be pursuing advanced classical music study of violin or piano at a recognized post-secondary

Cooperative Education

Many University and Colleges offer cooperative education/training programs. With this format a student takes the regular academic courses but at specific points in the academic program works in a related industry or government position. This usually extends graduation by a year but the student earns money while working, thus easing financial strain. The other key benefits are: important people contacts for future employment in your field practical training to match with your studies, and experience to enhance your employability. As you can see this type of program has very real benefits and should be investigated.

Family and Friends

Have your parents check with their employer, union, or association for scholarships that might be available to the children of those they employ or who are members. Friends might know of monies that are available for application. Follow up on any leads.

The cost of post-secondary education to the student is rising at an accelerated rate. To reduce financial burden on your family and yourself, look into, and act on any possibilities that may help pay for your higher education.
