Washington, Scandinavian Studies, is one of only five uni-
versities invited to participate.
Maren Anderson Johnson was selected to represent the
University of Washington, Scandinavian Studies, based on
her essay "Setting the Agenda: Exporting Norwegian
Norms through the Nobel Peace Prize". In the article Ma-
ren proposes that the Peace Prize has immense signifi-
cance for how Norway’s politics, norms and values are
exported to the world and then she articulates how this is

The speakers, who have committed to participate in the
forum, are: F.W. de Klerk, former President of South Af-
rica and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Skumzi ("Saki") Ma-
cozoma, business leader and former Member of the South
African Parliament.
The second acknowledgement, on an international level,
came on February 1, 2012 with the Estonian President,
Toomas Hendrik Ilves, signing a resolution to give state
decorations, Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, to peo-
ple whose commitment in different spheres of life has en-
couraged and inspired many others. On the eve of the

Marko Mihkelson was first elected to the Estonian Parlia-
ment in 2003 and is currently serving as the Chairman of
its Foreign Relations Committee. Earlier, he headed Esto-
nian Parliamentary Delegations to the Council of Europe
and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He has been a
member of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union since
2001. He has been a frequent and sought-after speaker
and panelist at various national and international forums.
Marko Mihkelson began his professional career in 1994 as
a journalist for the Estonian daily newspaper Postimees,
serving as its Moscow correspondent. In 1997 he was pro-
moted to Editor-in-Chief at Postimees. Academically,
Marko Mihkelson earned both a Bachelor and a Masters
Degree in History from Tartu University.
During his busy schedule, Marko Mihkelson has found
time to write a number of books, including the following:
“Venemaa, valguses ja varjus (Russia in Dusk and
Dawn)”, published in 2010; “The Power of Freedom –
Central and Eastern Europe After 1945”, published in
2009; and coauthored a school textbook, for 12th graders,
on recent history entitled Lühiajalugu: õpik XII klassile”,
published in 2002 and reprinted in 2003.
Marko Mihkelson is widely respected and admired in Es-
tonia as a talented and energetic young political leader.
This recognition is shared and attested to by many politi-
cal leaders in the European Community by awarding him a
number of honors such as: Commander of the Order of the
North Star of Kingdom of Sweden, 1st class, 2011; Offi-
cer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Po-
land, 2009; Order of the White Star, 4th class, 2006;
Knight of the National Order of Merit of France, 2005;
Golden Award of the Estonian Ministry of Defense, 2004;
Grand Cross of the Commander of the Order of the
Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, 2004; Grand Officer
of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, 2004; and
others.
Marko Mihkelson’s spare time is spent with his family
that includes a daughter. Occasionally, he is able to
squeeze in a round of golf or a game or two on the tennis
court.
While in Seattle, Marko Mihkelson will also speak at the
Vancouver, Canada, Estonian Society’s celebration of the
Estonian Independence Day on Saturday, 25 February
2012, beginning at 2:00P.M. at the Vancouver Estonian
House. Then, on Monday, 27 February 2012, Marko
Mihkelson will give two lectures at the University of
Washington, one at the Baltic Studies Program, and the
other at the Henry M. Jackson School of International
Studies. Previous Estonian speakers at the University of
Washington have been the late President Lennart Meri and
current President Toomas Henrik Ilves, when Ilves was
Estonia’s Ambassador to the United States. Those who

acknowledge the services of Assistant Professor Guntis
Smidchens, one of the founders of the Baltic Studies Pro-

Being asked to participate in a forum with international
affiliation, having a faculty member receive an internation-
ally recognized award, illustrates how highly the Depart-
ment of Scandinavian Studies, its faculty and students are
viewed by their peers. We, from the Scandinavian Studies
Advisory Board, extend our congratulations to Maren
Anderson Johnson and Guntis Smidchens.

Jõulutrallist
Merit Oviir
Seattle’i eestlased said möödunud jõulude ajal kokku 11.
Detsembril Läti kiriku jõulupuu all. Pühapäevasel päeval
oli sagimist Läti majas juba hommikust saati, kuigi
peouksed kuulutati ametlikult avatuks alles kella kahest
pärastlõunal.
Jõulupeoks oli ettevalmistusi tehtud juba pikalt, et kõik
laulud ja tantsud laitmatult esitatud saaksid ning jõuluroog
taldrikutel maitsemeelt paitaks. Rahvatantsijad ja lauljad

sünnipäeva Enid Vercamer
9. Oktoobril 2011. a. pühitses meie Seattle’i Eesti kogudus
oma 60. aasta juubelit. Pildil on kõik sellest osavõtnud koos
abipraost Hendrik Lauriga. Rõõmustav oli, et kõik kirikus
viibijad, 17 liiget, armulauast osa võtsid. Hiljem kohvilauas
andis huvitava ülevaate koguduse ajaloost ainus
järelejäänud asutajaliige - Elga Mihkelson - nimetades
kõiki selle pika aja jooksul kogudust teeninud õpetajad kui
ka esimehed. Oli ilus koguduse sünnipäev.

olid abis saalis laudasid üles seadmas ning paralleelselt
tantsu- ja lauluproovidega leidusid ka mõned vabad
kätepaarid, et köögis toidul silma peal hoida. Saali
kaunistas korralik jõulupuu, mille alla märkamatult suur
kingituste kuhi kogunes.
Vaikselt hakkas rahvas kogunema ning
jõulujumalateenistuse lõppedes liitus kirikukülastajate
seltskond samuti pidulistega. Peosaalis oli üles seatud ka
Jõulu Laat, kus taas leiba, pohlamoosi, verivorsti,
marineeritud kõrvitsat, piparkooke ning muid Eesti
teemalisi toite ning meeneid osta sai. Kogu teenitud tulu
läks Seattle’i Eesti Seltsi toetuseks. Jõulumüügile andsid
head inimesed endavalmistatud toite ning meeneid
annetusete näol, saades vastutasuks andmisrõõmu ning
lootes Eesti Seltsi jätkusuutlikkuse kasvu Seattle’is.
Jõulupeo avas tervitusega SES esinaine Kristi Urv-Wong
ning avasõna järel kandis ette kaunid luuleread Elga
Mihkelson. Segakoori esitluses, mida juhatas Philip
Tschopp, tulid ettekandmisele jõululaulud ning kõigil
soovijail oli võimalus ka kaasa laulda. Julge ja kauni
etteastega esines Pullmanist jõuludeks koduseid
külastama tulnud Maarika Vercamer, kelle kaunis
lauluhääl kõrvu paitas. Caroli Leimani eestvedamisel
toodi tükike Laste Pillerkaart ka jõulupeole, mil pisikesed
põnnid koos oma emadega terve saalitäie rahvast endaga
koos tantsima haarasid. Pärast vahvat laste etteastet
jõudis järg rahvatantsijate „Tuhandest Tuulest“ grupini,
kelle esitluses lustakad tantsud pealtvaatajtele muheleva
naeratuse näole tõid. Au ja kiitus siinkohal tublile ja
energilisele tantsuõpetajale – Carolile.
Pärast rahvatantsijate etteastet oli peatselt kuulda
saaliuksel kaua oodatud koputamist – Jõuluvana oli
viimaks ometi jõudnud! Suur kingikott üle õla, astus
jõulutaat kindlal sammul üle saali. Tema usin abiline
Rein Atteman seadis jõulumehe jalga puhkama ning tegi
ettevalmistusi, et ükski kink ei jääks kätte jagamata.
Jõuluvana (Paul Raidna) uuris, kas kõik on ikka head
lapsed olnud ning kas salmid on ilusti selgeks õpitud,
mille peale kostis saalist vastuseks üksmeelne „jah!“. Sel
korral jagus kingitusi jõulutaadi kotist paljudele, ning kingi
lunastamise etteasteid oli klaverimängust ja tantsust kuni
luuletuse lugemise ja laulmiseni. Meelelahutus missugune!
Paaril korral pidi ka jõulumees oma vitsa kasutama, sest
need suuremad „lapsed“ on laisad salmi õppima.
Kui jõuluvana oli jälle teele saadetud, toimus jõulutoidu
serveerimine. Krõbedad verivorstid peekoniga ning
pohlamoos, praekapsas ja kartul moodustasid ülimalt
luksusliku jõulusöögi. Magustoidu lauda olid peolised ise
erinevaid maiuseid kaasa toonud, niiet laud oli suisa lookas.
Pärast õhtusööki erinevaid maiuseid proovides, jätkus
jutusuminat ning naeru mitmeteks tundideks.
Traditsiooni kohaselt oli päev enne jõulupidu grupp tublisid
kohaliku kogukonna inimesi kogunenud Tiina Oviiri
eestvedamisel tema koju verivorste valmistama. Sel aastal
oli Seattle’i eestlaste jõulutraditsioonie üles jäädvustamas
ka kohalik telemees TJ Willamson Adventure TV-st, kelle
käe läbi jõudis ülevaade nii verivorstide valmistamisest kui
ka Läti kirikus toimunud SES Jõulupeost paljude
huvilisteni. Kõigil oli võimalik valmis saadet näha nii
kohaliku televisiooni kui ka interneti vahendusel 24. ja 29.
detsembirl ning kohaliku eestlaste kogukonna soovil veel
kord 16. jaanuaril alanud aastal.

Olari Elts makes a quick
stopover in Seattle Linda-Reet and Mart Kask
In the midst of a severe winter storm when heavy snow,
high winds, and ice storms caused havoc and a quarter of
million households went without power, there appeared a
bright star at the Beneroya Seattle Symphony Hall,
Saturday night. The Seattle audience who dared travel to
downtown Seattle were treated to an elegant performance
of composer Peteris Vasks’ 1998 concerto, “Distant
Light”, conducted by Olari Elts, a broadly admired and
talented Estonian symphony orchestra conductor. The
Seattle Times in their Monday, 23 January edition had this
to say about Olari Elts: “Saturday’s performance was led
by Estonian Olari Elts, 40, another of the new crop of
talented up-and-coming conductors we are seeing more of
these days. Bracketed by Hayden and Mendelssohn, the
centerpiece was Peteris Vasks’ Concerto for Violin and
String Orchestra “Distant Light” written for Vasks’
famous compatriot Gidon Kremer. The violin soloist was
Maria Larionoff, well known to Seattle audience. Both
Hayden’s sunny Symphony No. 86 and Mendelssohn’s
familiar Symphony No.4 the “Italian” received excellent
interpretations from the small orchestra under Elts’
direction. Conducting mostly without baton, he drew a
Baroque-infused performance of the first order, with crisp
articulation, no vibrato and clean tone with lively tempos.
He brought out Mendelssohn’s joyful start and melodic
colors with clear leadership indicated by his expressive
hands. This conductor we should bring back.” We should
note that the orchestra had only one short rehearsal in
advance of the performance.
LK 4 SEATTLE’I EESTLASTE TEATED
Olari Elts is the newly appointed Principal Guest
Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic. As stated in the
Seattle Symphony program, Elts has earned much praise
on the international music scene for his distinctive
programming rich with intervention. Alongside the
rational repertoire, Elts has a strong commitment to
contemporary music, including close association with
fellow Estonians Arvo Pärt and Erkki-Swen Tüür. In
addition to his new position, in Helsinki, Elts also remains
Principal Guest Conductor of the Estonian National
Symphony and Artistic Advisor for Orchestre de Bretagne.
Our brief visit with Olari Elts, backstage, after the
performance was very pleasant and memorable. Elts was
on his way to the airport to catch a late night flight to
Stockholm where he was scheduled to perform on Monday
or was it Tuesday. His parting words were that he would
like to come back and work again with the Seattle
Symphony. He praised the Northwest Scandinavian work
ethic. Other quest conductors that have visited Seattle are
Eri Klass and Neeme Järvi. Olari Elts has performed
throughout the world from Australia to Scotland, to Paris,
to Cincinnati to Tokyo an many other places, too
numerous to mention here.

Korp! Indla toetab rinnavähi
sõeluuringuid Eestis Maria Pedak-Kari & Anne-Liis Ise
Korp! Indla Rinnavähi Ennetamise Projekti juhid
Eestis naiste seas kõige levinum
pahaloomuline kasvaja on
rinnavähk. Igal aastal
diagnoositakse seal umbes 600
rinnavähi esmajuhtu, nendest on
ca. 60% selle avastamise
momendil juba lokaalselt
levinud või kaugemale
arenenud. Surevus esimese viie
aasta jooksul on umbes 40%.
Et võimaldada varasemat diagnoosi, alustas MTÜ Eesti
Vähiliit rinnavähi ennetustegevust aktiivse kampaaniaga
2005. aastal, kutsudes üles naisi üleriigilieselt
sõeluuringutes osalema. Neid uuringuid teostavad
onkoloogiakeskused Tallinnas, Tartus, Pärnus ja Ida-
Virumaal. Kuna need ei kata Lõuna-Eestit, on seal
kasutusele võetud “liikuv mammograafia” ehk
mammograafiabussid. Tänaseks on neid kaks. Viimane
soetati aastal 2009, mis on Tartu Ülikooli Kliinikumi

käsutuses. Teisele, ehk vanemale bussile on Vähiliit
ostnud uue, ajakohase digitaalse mammograafia aparaadi.
Vaja on aga muretseda veel uus kütte-ja elektrisüsteem,
mis maksab ligikaudu $7,700, kuid raha selleks ei ole.
Et tähistada oma 85 aasta juubelit, alustas Korp! Indla
Eesti Rinnavähi Ennetamise Projekti (KIRVE) koostöös
Eesti Ameerika Fondiga (EAF). Projekti siht on toetada
rinnavähi ennetustegevust Eestis, aidates muretseda uue
mammograafia aparaadiga bussile uus kütte- ja
elektrisüsteem. Need bussid võimaldavad kümnel tuhandel
Eesti naisel aastas osaleda sõeluuringutes.
Selle projektiga me austame ka Korp! Indla põhimõtteid ja
oma kadunud esinaist vil! Anu Leetmad, kes suri 2004
aastal rinnavähki.
Et projekti alustada, annetas Korp! Indla selleks $1000
oma kassast ja kutsus üles oma liikmeid omalt poolt
annetusi lisama. Kutsume üles ka kõiki teisi eestlasi ja
eesti organisatsioone USA’s toetama selle projekti läbi
väga olulist rinnavähi ennetamistööd Eestis.
Paljud meist on kogenud rinnavähi kurjust oma
perekonnas või sõprade hulgas. Igaüks meist tahab, et
Eesti rahvas oleks terve ja elujõuline. Annetus KIRVE
projektile on konkreetne võimalus seda soovi rahuldada.

A new book – just released!
A new book titled We Were Estonian Soldiers has been
released describing Estonia’s involvement in World War
II from a soldier’s viewpoint. It is written in English and
consists of about 250 pages, enhanced with many
illustrations and photos. The source material was gathered
by the author’s father and is now in the Estonian War
Museum in Viimsi, Estonia. The book will also soon be
released in Estonia in our native language.
The stories are about five Estonian officers who were
classmates at the Estonian Military Technical Academy
during the years of 1936 thru 1940. Their detailed
memoirs start with the Soviet occupation of Estonia and
the outbreak of World War II. All were commissioned 2nd
lieutenants upon their graduation from the academy in
1940. Then their lives took different paths.
Mart Laar, Estonia’s Minister of Defense, has written the
introductory pages. He ends his introduction with the
following words:
“Some of the following stories are simply fantastic. If one
did not know that it is impossible to dream up such wild
tales one would think them being simply unbelievable...
Most of these men fought in both Soviet and German
armed forces. Their aim was to keep the Red Army out of
Estonia until war’s end when the Atlantic Charter of the
allied forces would allow Estonia to regain its
independence. It was no fault of theirs that it could not be
achieved. What they did achieve was to instill a tradition
of resistance which bore fruit 50 years later when Estonia
again won its freedom from the occupying foreign power.
They were true Estonian soldiers. - Mart Laar, Sept. 4,

surmast, anda infot ärasaatmise kohta, kirjutada järelehüüe
või esitada mälestuskilde lahkunu elu kohta.
Keskkonnas on võimalik otsida nii konkreetset infot (nt
lahkunu nime järgi), aga ka üldisemate näitajate järgi
(näiteks elukoht, sünnikuupäeva vahemik või
surmakuupäeva vahemik).
Selleks, et surmateadete portaal väärikalt käivitada,
palume Teie abi. Ootame toonela.ee-sse informatsiooni
oma surnud lähedaste kohta, sõltumata sellest, millal kurb
sündmus aset leidis (näiteks 70ndatel surnud
vanavanemate kohta). Teateid saab praegu sisestada
tasuta.
Inimene elab mälestustes igavesti ja igaüks on jätnud
endast jälje, mida teada ja mäletada.
Tallinna Ülikoolis läbi viidud uuringust ilmnes, et eakad
internetikasutajad tellivad paberajalehte sageli vaid
selleks, et lugeda surmakuulutusi. Internet, kus pole ruumi
- ja ajaprobleemi, pakub mälestamiseks palju suuremaid
võimalusi kui trükimeedia. Uuring kinnitas, et veebipõhine
surmakuulutuste keskkond on oodatud ja see aitaks kaasa
eakate internetikasutuse levimisele.
Praegu on Eestis 65aastaste ja vanemate inimeste seas
internetikasutajaid vaid veidi üle 30%.
Mida rohkem on veebikeskkonnas kuulutusi, seda suurem
on sellest kasu kõikide kasutajate jaoks.
Army which was soon disbanded and integrated into the
Russian occupation forces. He deserted from the Red
Army and ended up in a German prisoner of war camp.
Life in camp was hard as attested by his body weight
being only 88 lbs when released. He then served in the
German SS and was heavily wounded in action. He and
his family lived thru the heavy bombing of Tallinn. At the
end of the war he managed to walk and ride on top of
railroad cars from Czechoslovakia to western Germany in
order to not fall into Russian hands.
Lt. Hugo Kubja likewise deserted from the Red Army. His
story is one of survival in the woods of Estonia. At one
point he had to shoot his way out of a situation which
threatened his freedom. He took part in expelling the Red
Army from Estonia at the battle of Tartu. Later, he saw
action on the Leningrad front. At war’s end he made his
escape to the west.
Lt. Edgar Reiksaar was captured by a Russian patrol after
deserting from his Red Army unit. They thought him to be
a German paratrooper and he was tried in a Soviet court
for spying. The court found him guilty and he was ordered
to be executed. He escaped but was later recaptured and
executed with several bullets thru his head. Miraculously
he survived. His ordeal and how he made it back to safety
is stranger than fiction.
Lt. Johannes Jaagus lived thru the intrigues and fears
brought on by the Soviet occupation. He wrestled with his
soul when pressured to join the Communist Party. Spies
and “death angels” brought angst and fear into his life. He
lived thru several terrifying air raids while in the Red
Army. He too chose an opportune moment to desert and
become a prisoner of the Germans.
Lt. August Vohma was the consummate professional
soldier. He saw continuous action throughout the war
years. No matter what country’s uniform he was wearing
he performed with distinction. He was first promoted to
captain and then to the rank of major. At war’s end he was
the ranking Estonian artillery officer in Germany.
August’s story is also a love story. He met a young lady
during the war who became his wife. His dogged search
for her after the war involved some amazing twists of fate.

Orav and Meri: This is a story about the legendary Ivan Orav and Meri (Lennart
Meri, 1929-2006, President of Estonia 1992-2001). The two attempt to carry a
desk down from the attic. The work is too difficult for the orators, so they pause
to eat, have a drink and engage in a witty conversation. Top Estonian comedians
Egon Nuter and Andrus Vaarik are brilliant in this play by the popular Estonian
author Andrus Kivirähk. They have been playing these roles for years, but as there
is room for improvisation; every play is unique and special.
Post-show discussion will be in English. Who was Lennart Meri? Why do Esto-
nians love him so? And... do Estonians really have a sense of humor?

The Penthouse Theatre is on the University of Washington Campus next to Park-
ing Lot N-5.

25.märts. Naised käisid kõrtsis, jõid
punast veini, et paled oleksid punased
ja muidu terved. Söödi pannkooke ja
karaskit, Saaremaal keedeti seajalgu,
Lõuna-Eestis söödi kuivatavud kala.
